I just got admitted into Texas Tech University for mechanical engineering, please does anyone know the advantage of holding a texas tech degree in the Nigeria's oil and gas sector?
You are going to Texas!!! TEXAS!!!! grin grin And you want to come back?!!! grin grin grin
Very funny.

Only people I know with your mentality are researchers on government bond. And they're all regretting grin grin

Exactly. I ignored this thread for a long time. I got many mentions - people asking for info. I reluctantly went back to my contacts - to personal discomfort. I posted their responses here and forgot about here again.

Few days later, one of them, who is highly connected, called me, without me asking, and provided info for me. I dropped here immediately and published on our website. What we published went farther than we anticipated and caused serious issue in the system.

I have suffered personal loss from this - relationship breakdown with my 3 sources. And one random troll here is spewing gibberish.
Ignore him. Stop responding, let him keep ranting. He will not be the first or last.
I have been paying attention to his rants trying to decipher his true intentions.
New accounts usually have an agenda, he will soon slip up. They always do.

Once again, my apologies for your circumstance. You have done more for people here than you could ever imagine, they won't forget.
Cheers.

Blindersoff:
You are not serious. Same as the OP.

Is this about a rebuttal or actually assisting you with evacuation?

What the hell is wrong with you guys?

How can I get a rebuttal when I have nothing to present?
Hold up, you need to present something to find out the total number of Nigerians in Wuhan?!! I'm sure you didn't realize the indictment in your statement.

Blindersoff:
Where is evidence of the letters you said you sent and the response you said you got from the embassy? Can I see?

You need to arm me with my requested information otherwise this is bust
Get a rebuttal of the statistic that the OP mentioned from the embassy first.
Your enquiry has been noted.

Blindersoff:
Are you WuhanPerson the OP?

If yes, what is the name of the university you are at in Wuhan ?

When enquiring from the Nigerian embassy, whose name should I mention I am asking for?
Nope I am not. There are others affected on this thread. You don't have to mention any specific name!!! That doesn't solve anything. I am asking you to enquire on your own and ascertain from the officials the statistic the OP has mentioned.

Bring evidence of them refuting it, then we all can go from there.

WuhanPerson sorry abeg.

Where and when did you direct me anywhere? Please show

Plus your information should not be with the Chinese Embassy alone because that is not your country.

Did you register with Nigerias embassy in China?
We all did!! Even with NIDO!!! That was why the Minister's 16 people statistic shocked everyone here!!!
You can enquire from them.

Good morning, your concerns are in line but also, it is not right to insinuate that the government has abandoned Italy citizens in Wuhan.

Though evacuation might not happen soon but FG has advised that those in China adhere strictly to precautionary instructions and also report /keep in touch with the embassy in China.

You can reach out to any of these numbers : Mr Austine Ekeayanwu, Minister Consular and Immigration; +15010266280; Mrs Ayo Luther-Ogbomode, Minister/Political +13716244174 and Mr Lawal Bappah, Minister/Public Communication, +13520156753.
We have!!!! Letters have been sent, communication has been made. We applauded the embassy officials for their Swift response by communicating with us, only to be shocked by what the minister said to the media.
It made us realize the audio nature of their initial response.

That was why I directed that Blindersoff guy to the China embassy or the NIDO group if he wants to obtain our information.

We are looking at next steps to take, please anymore suggestions are welcome.

Its beyond painful and sad.

My interview:

I wasn't initially serious about this till a friend challenged me telling me I'd never make it past the CBT because I wasn't that intelligent. I felt insulted and prepared by covering my old GRE books and NNPC past Q, improving my precision along the way. I practically slept through the CBT exam because I was very exhausted.
Anyone who saw one guy sleeping while people were rushing into the computer center saw me grin grin.

So, I scaled through, was invited for interview and proceeded to turn my challenging friend into my interview coach. cheesy cheesy

Interview session went as follows:

Man 1: Tell us about yourself
...

Proceeded to recite my Scholarship personal statement.

Man 2: Tell us safety procedures if you're going to drive a car.

....

Mentioned several on my head then got interrupted when I talked about checking my tyre pressure before driving.

Man 3: How can you check it before driving? You drive the car to check pressure? Doesn't make sense!!!

.....

My Vulcanizer stays near my house, so all I do every morning is to bring him over to check the tyres before I drive out.
....

Everybody nods in agreement.

Man 4: who is the president of NMGS and NAPE?

.....

No idea!!! I don't know!!! smiley But I remember Prof. Saidu baba was a former president of NMGS.
...

Man 4: That's a long time ago!! cheesy cheesy

....

Yeah!! cheesy
....

Man 5: Wait!! You can't speak your language?!!! You only know how to speak Hausa?!!
....

Everybody laughs cheesy cheesy cheesy
....

Man 6: So what are your plans for the next give years?

....

I'm going to be an expert in CCS and NMR.
....

Everybody nods head.
....

Thanks for coming.
..

My life has since changed since that period. If it comes or doesn't, I will remain grateful to God.

Thanks for the response.

It is a one year contract with the possibility of extension, depending on grant availability.

The concerns here are as follows:

1. NNPC is in one's motherland and comes with a reasonable income (Nigerian standard) and job security.

2. In an NOC, one would not be worried about issues like H index and tenure (which is incredibly hard to find in this day and age)

3. Would one have time to do research in the background, thus building their research profile, while working in Nigerian NOC?
Of course you can carry out research!! cheesy cheesy

Hmm 3k pounds per month for a postdoc in the UK, I assume. The question is will it be taxed and is your accommodation catered for? That is like 1.2m per month and like 14.4m per annum. For how long? If your aim is in academia it might not be a bad option but if your interest is to end up in the industry you might want to reconsider.

Asides from that many people going abroad don't only have money in mind, there are other things like the problems with remaining in Nigeria. Another thing is that you can go on Linkedin and check the profiles of some people that have towed this path and see how they faired. I have seen some PhD holders abroad ending up as consultants in top firms, we can guess that comes with lots of money.
This is another good point.

muhddeen3:
Thanks for the response.. More questions come to mind though. In what way do you reckon a systems engineer can get groomed in NNPC?

Also, do they provide opportunities for capacity development?

My assumption (I so hope I'm wrong, lol) is that they give you training to fit in the role they deem you fit, not based on what you studied.. And from there, one carries on with the new job role (just like how our banks relagate graduates to cashier duty).

By my (hopefully flawed) assumption, one may be left with no option than to adopt a career that sits well with the corporation.
No matter where you are placed, it will always be up to you to make the most of your environment.

I'm not an engineer (user name should hint that), I feel as a researcher NNPC will give access to data which you can best use to fulfil your future aspirations.

Eg. I know a dude who was thrown in a lab in the North Central, he went online liased with researchers across the world and quietly worked on the data his office dumped on him.

Now he is getting offers like mad everywhere because of his research pedegree. While his colleagues are sitting and waiting for money, he is becoming renowned.

Okay, while we're anticipating our APLs (may we recieve the news in good faith, amen), I would like to pose a few questions please:

1. Would you accept this APL job if you have a phd and a secured post doc position that pays £3k pm?

2. Is it true that nnpc turns one into a glorified clerk?

These questions are purely for knowledge seeking and decision making, I wish everyone of us the very best of luck.

Thank you.
Finally!!!
The solution is to view NNPC as a means to an end. Getting that few years experience in an NOC along with other qualifications should stand you out in the industry.

I know people who stuck with local oil companies, improved their CV and LinkedIn profile to the point where oil companies in Canada, and the middle East were jostling for their services.

Always see the big picture, don't follow the crowd who just want to sit one place and earn big money for doing nothing.

In Psychology, projection is a defense mechanism people subconsciously employ in order to cope with difficult feelings. It involves projecting undesirable feelings or emotions unto someone else, rather than admitting or dealing with the unwanted feelings.

If my reference, to your underemployment and consequent limited earning power unsettled your insecurities, please just kindly take heart, APL is coming soon. Only people who are dissatisfied with their station in life would be as passionate and emotionally stimulated by the contents of this thread as you and that other sidekick of yours are. Some of us really do not care what people post here or what sources are peddled because APL coming or not does not feature that highly on our list of priorities. We are just too busy working at proper adult jobs, until we are compelled to come around and teach irritants like you a lesson or two.

Like I already said, engage yourself more meaningfully, just in case. If you commit suicide because of this job, nobody will acknowledge you here.
Totally against whatever beef is going on between you two, just wanted to acknowledge good writting skills.

The world is your oyster. Search countries and universities, look for scholarship opportunities. If your CGP is as high as the op then more opportunities for you.

UCD and tudelft for instance give guys like him instant scholarship because geology is a key field in their schools. Also engineering too.

There's CSC in China, MEXT in Japan, and many more. The world is your oyster.

4.89cgpa in the Department of Geological science, Federal University Gusau?

Impressive and Congratulations bruv.

But in all honesty, a graduate with 5.00Gp from such department in your school is equal to a 1.5Gp graduate of any Engineering department in Universities like, Futo, UI, OAU, Uniben, Uniport, UniLag, UNN, Unizik, UniIlorin and Unijos.

This is me telling you the truth.

And please, if you are a graduate or student of IMSU and you expected me to call your School.....You are MAD!!
In the North?!!!! Geology is a strong course in that region. Go to geology departments in ABU, unimaid and see for yourself.
Other courses I'm not sure, but Northern geologists are trying.

I'll advice this dude to get his head down and look for a suitable scholarship and Japa!!! Leave this country!!

Tudelft Netherlands, UCD Dublin, many more scholarships out there. Don't waste this CGPA please.

After this I will not respond to you on this matter again. The data below shows the literacy level in Nigeria (2017). Perhaps you need to check the ones for poverty, female genital mutilation, access to clean water, open defecation, religious and communal violence, child marriage, infant and maternal mortality, out of school, percentage school enrollment etc.

Have you try to classify Nigeria based on GDP per capital B4? The poorest country in the world is CAR, with GDP per capital of about $700. Are you aware that if northern NIgeria was a country it would have been poorer than Central African Republic?
Though I don't agree with the argument direction, I love it when someone knows how to back up his points. grin grin

Aside the regular Solid works (improved AutoCAD) you can try as much as possible to learn the following
P&ID diagram , Piping Engineering(Flanges and their class, class 150 , class 300 ,class 600) with some knowledge on CP(Cathodic protection) , different valves types and their functions, actuators ,Compressors and pumps. Heat exchanger and boiler arrangements, indirect water heater. For natural gas measurements acquit yourself with flow meters such as Turbine meters, mechanical bath chart etc . My brother with these knowledge acquired, if they don't call you then you have to call yourself.(on a lighter note )
Nice!! smiley smiley

others can share for future GTs to learn.

Experienced Reservoir engineers, Drillers, Logging geologists, etc. Can share skills required for GTs to possess.

Majority of Nigerian professors have no business with that title. See many with published research in backyard journals littered with kindergarten English errors calling themselves "professor".

Some of them form their own international journals and use to publish rubbish. Example, imagine a professor Abraham using research published in Abraham International Journal of Applied sciences to claim he published in an international journal.

Many are more interested in playing university politics and chasing female students. God help us.
