flemsy15: In trying not to be biased I will like to know more about his profile. How many papers has he published on international journals ? Has he put his knowledge into use or he follows whatever direction the money goes ? I say this because when I completed a bachelors + masters in computer science and moved to nigeria as a youth corp member many (family members) made fun of me for refusing to listen to them. I was trying to get a software development job as a youth corper but they said I must teach. By the time I came back from camp I had an offer letter (contract) from a tech company. A friend later came to advise me to get in touch with an uncle who was senior at NNPC to get me a job there as I was wasting my time with this tech thing that doesnt work in nigeria. Within a few months many of them began to question my source because they felt I was doing far better than they expected. Many times I wrote to potential employers I told them about some of their problems and how I intended to solve it. I once met with a bank director (one of the big five) and told him how they needed to unify their software systems across the different countries where they had recently bought over other banks and how I had done a similar project in the past. He was impressed and asked if I could bring up to 4 people with me to form a team. An offer came a few days later but I had to turn it down because the offer required my fulltime presence which I wasnt ready to commit to. My point is that as individuals we need to overcome our fears and face challenges as they come. If I had listened to my family members 5 years ago I'd have abandoned computer science and gone into the immediate next thing that paid some money. One of my friends back in university was someone I saw as a potential top virologist. She was so good and earned a masters in virology with an option to continue to PHd. While this offer was on the table her uncle in Atlanta assisted her in securing a fellowship at US CDC in atlanta in 2015. Her parents asked her to return to Nigeria and get married as she was nothing if she wasn't married. She moved to nigeria , got married and never went back to the field of microbiology/virology. She's now into bead making/sewing. Nigeria has a way of killing people's dreams and most times the people we hang around with influence our decisions . There is so much quest for money among nigerians that people tend to face the direction of the money. A commissioned army officer will not leave his job after a few years to go and become a security man in mobil because they offer him more money. I know a doctor in training who abandoned the field to go into the business of buying cows in the northern region and taking to sell in the eastern region. His reason was that it paid him more money than he will earn as a doctor in training. This is the kind of society we live in where its all about the money 7 Likes 3 Shares |

Are nigerians not tired of poverty and hardship ? Why all this noise about zoning zoning zoning. Cecil Rhodes a british imperialist forcefully imposed crude measures on south africans and built a country for them that no african country can match today. He was hated but was a british man. Today nigerians cannot even easily secure visas to visit south africa. He died at the age of 49 and was a sickly being. He wanted to construct a railline from cape town to cairo a feat I believe he would have achieved if his life was not cut short . All these noise about zoning means nothing to me as nigeria is a shithole and none of these crop of presidential candidates have what it takes to positively change the fortune of Nigeria. 2 Likes |

Travel / Re: Air Peace Deploys Two New Aircraft On Anambra Route by tshtsh: 6:54pm On Jan 26, 2022 |
BigBashiru: Foreign airlines land in lagos or abuja , spend three hours and return to their home countries. For the local airlines I'll try to summarize the issues. 1. A single aircraft is scheduled to operate 6 - 10 flights a day. Take an arik or airpeace for instance. They have flights originating out of MM1 lagos at 7am - 8am daily. MM1 has only one screening point and one/two boarding gates. Attempt to board 10 flights at about the same time is impossible. Some of those flights end up getting delayed due to delay in boarding passengers. This problem is from FAAN as they ought to have a slot system in place to manage things better. 2. Assuming the first aircraft of arik departs on time from lagos and gets to abuja on time. After disembarking passengers the plane is scheduled to board passengers to yola after 50 mins. The flight dispatcher informs the captain that yola airport is not equipped to land an aircraft under the high winds they are experiencing and they have to wait till things are clear. By this singular act , abuja to yola passengers are delayed by 2 hours. Yola to abuja passengers are also delayed by another 2- 3 hours. The same aircraft is scheduled to convey passengers from abuja to lagos after its return to yola . Those passengers will also be delayed. 3. An airpeace flight departs lagos to akure. While boarding they are informed by their supplier at akure that there is no jet fuel on ground. Thus they offload some bags and fill up the aircraft in lagos with enough fuel to take the aircraft to akure and back otherwise the aircraft will be stuck in akure till jet fuel is available. 4. An aero flight has just been delayed due to VIP movement in abuja . The effect of this delay is that aircraft will need to land at warri airport at 7pm. But as warri and many other airports in nigeria have no facilities for night landing the airline adjusts its schedule without notice to enable it convey passengers flying to airports without airfield lighting ahead of the 6pm deadline. The result of this adjustment is a long delay on others. 5. An aircraft snag has been identified and fixed by the airline's engineering team. They need an NCAA inspector to inspect and sign off. NCAA is currently short-staffed with few inspectors unable to meet the demand. The result is the aircraft will be grounded for another day or two and about 6 flights will be cancelled. 6.An aircraft develops a fault in kano. Azman is based in kano and have their engineers there. The policy does not allow an azman engineer to fix up a max air aircraft. Max air engineer has to come from lagos to fix the problem no matter how little this is. 7. Dollar scarcity The issues are many. I've also been a victim of the inefficiencies of nigerian airlines but have also looked at the issues and asked people knowledgeable enough and the complains are similar. If airlines operated into only abuja, enugu, lagos airports delays would have been minimal. United nigeria is a new airline with just 4 aircrafts operating into 5 cities. When they scale up their operations and start operating into 10 or more airports under this same conditions you'll begin to complain about their services. All nigerian airlines start well but as they expand they begin to find it difficult to cope with the toxic operating environment and maintain their reliability & on-time performance 2 Likes |

Travel / Re: Air Peace Deploys Two New Aircraft On Anambra Route by tshtsh: 1:09pm On Jan 26, 2022 |
BigBashiru:That’s a function of the environment they operate in. As an airline in a sane climate all you need to do is buy the right aircraft & hire the crew. Roll out your schedule and kick off operations with the relevant licensing . But in Nigeria airlines deal with lack of FX to purchase spares, scarcity of aviation fuel , Ill-equipped airports making it impossible for aircrafts to land when they need to, issues with customs withholding aircraft parts & airports like Lagos that have few screening machines/passenger facilitation mechanisms. All these make it impossible for an airline to operate efficiently without delays and disruptions. New airlines with few routes and aircraft usually seem efficient but once they scale up operations to operate multiple aircrafts into multiple airports the lapses of the system begin to manifest . For me I use only morning flights to minimise the risk of delays but even at that flights to port harcourt tend to be delayed in the morning these days because of low visibility 4 Likes |

Assuming they generated 4 million on each flight their daily revenue from domestic passenger flights and cargo can be placed at 400 million naira daily. Now since then they've increased capacity receiving two aircrafts in november 2021, one aircraft in december 2021 and now 2 aircrafts in january 2022. As far as I am concerned what happened is synonymous to some guards stopping a police officer on limpopo street in maitama or glover road in ikoyi and telling me he cannot go beyond a certain point. Nobody has such right. There is no estate in magodo. Every resident either bought/developed their land or rented their place of residence. Mounting a gate on a public road and attempting to stop a police officer from going beyond the gate will not fly in any sane society. It is within the rights of the CP, you and I or any other person to go there. Unfortunately many have accepted the narrative that it is a private estate which is far from fact. Even in private estates where a developer buys the land and gates it certain essential service providers like the police, fire services responders , ambulance/medics , PHCN workers... have every right to access without being questioned. People just believe living in a gated community is a form of status symbol and are now inconveniencing the public to satisfy their motives. LASG should come out clearly and take a position on this issue. The main roads in lekki phase 1 have become a traffic spot because the inner roads have all been converted to gated communities where only residents of the street can access meanwhile they are public roads 2 Likes |

Lagos state government should come out clearly and take a position on this rubbish residents have turned many neighborhoods into. Where I live in Lekki 1 I woke up one day and saw them constructing/mounting gates all over the place sometime in 2020. Then one day came I was headed home and was stopped by some men in blue who asked me where I was going to and the access code. I got annoyed and told them I knew nothing about this rubbish of a thing as this is even a public road and it was wrong to mount a gate on it. The man asked me to call a number if I was truly a resident and I told them if they didnt open the gate I'll leave the car there and walk away. Cars began to queue up due to my insistence and they let me in after insulting me and calling me names. I called the so-called association and they told me I had to pay 15k monthly for a sticker and they'll be sending access code weekly via sms. I told them that will never happen as I was never informed or a party to this non-sense. I and other residents of the rock drive became known for causing chaos at the gate thus they have been reluctantly letting me in. Many may argue that the CP was overzealous but I feel its about time the government takes a position on this nonsense where a few residents mount gates on public roads and begin to harass innocent citizens. On the rock drive there is a hospital (olive hospital) and you need access code to get into the street to get to the hospital. I have never seen a society like this. 8 Likes 3 Shares |

GraciousWords: Read through the attached link and it is a known fact that children are always the main victims of a divorce or separation. Sadly parents have decided to take their matter to a canadian court to settle probably ignoring all other available means of coming to a compromise. From the father's perspective its obvious that he was worried that he would never see his children again. The whole idea of him doing this because she denied him sex is funny but I doubt. From the mother's perspective Canada is best for their children and nothing else should matter. Migration is tough decision and even a single person like me sometimes worry about the decision I am making. It is more difficult when you have kids. There is a possibility that the consent form she submitted was fake. In 2006 my aunty took her two sons to USA on vacation (that was what she told her husband) but concealed the fact that she had secured a green card and was relocating them. I will also not exonerate the mother for challenging the father's position in a canadian court when they could have settled the matter amicably. As it is now the kids will return to nigeria and they either settle amicably or continue the battle in nigeria. |

christejames: Malaysia, singapore and dubai among others rivaled and overtook Lagos over time. It can be done and has been done before. Nevertheless, this crop of airlines in Nigeria will not do it. They want quick money (profit) and nothing more. In 2020 united nigeria airlines acquired four ERJ 145 aircrafts. Each of those aircrafts were 19 years old when they were acquired. There is nothing unique about Dr. Okonkwo's airline. That is one pattern of airlines that are not here to stay but out there for the quick cash. In the weeks leading to decmber 2021 there was high demand for tickets and united nigeria went to the market to wetlease another 20 year old A320 aircraft. This is not how the singapore airlines, etihad, emirates or malaysian airlines started & operated. Look at ibom air and you'll see that they are doing things different from others. Lagos airport is not even competitive in africa but it's huge market is the reason why foreign & local airlines are there. We are approaching the Single Africa Air Travel Market (SAATM) era and I dont see any nigerian airline (except ibom & airpeace) being able to compete in SAATM where likes of rwandair, asky, ethiopian are well equipped with modern aircraftsand structures. 2 Likes |

The lagos aviation market is already developed and most businessmen in Nigeria are out there to make profit and only profit. Nothing more. In USA bill gates wanted to make profit, build a technology hub out of the state of Washington (Seattle),build a world class brand and many more. This facilitated Microsoft's heavy presence in Seattle. Here it is profit and only profit. Some arab visionaries built an aviation hub out of desert dubai . It wasn't easy but they did it. When you say enugu is your headquarters but you have only two flights out of enugu daily and have more than 10 flights out of lagos then your hub/HQ is lagos (in my opinion). |

I wrote IELTS scoring L8.5 R8.5 W7.5 S8.0 and missed the October 14, 2020 draw due to what I still cant explain lol. Was at the endsars protest/funfare at the lekki/ikoyi toll plaza when my friend from CA called to ask if I had received ITA. Told him I didnt have my IELTS TRF number and moved on. October 30th came and there was no draw which got me a bit worried. Draw eventually happened after November 4 and cutoff was 478 which was above my score. Nevertheless I received ITA at the November 18 2020 draw. Considered rejecting the ITA because my POF was not complete then but later got encouraged not to reject it and I saved money aggressively (salary, allowances, bonus) from then onwards till I submitted my application within the 90 days timeline. Looking back at the CEC + PNP only draws I would have been full of regrets if I didnt apply. On the other hand, the both those waiting for an ITA and those who have received ITAs + submitted are having it tough. I submitted my application almost one year ago but have no idea when it will be processed. In the meantime I've had to keep $13,000 in an account resisting the temptation to use out of it when my other account goes low. Uncertainties here and there. Those waiting in the pool are losing points due to age and having their language test results expire. A number of people I know who moved to UK/Ireland have lost interest in canada after waiting more than one year. Not all are fortunate to be born into comfortable families but as a man you have to struggle through whatever situation you find yourself in. A man struggles and struggles through life and the first financial breakthrough that comes is used to marry a woman (liability in some instances) and the struggle continues. In some cases the man is responsible for the woman's expenses and that of her family members. The average worker in the nigerian aviation sector is a unionist and has a unionist mindset. Even the pilots with their trainings are sometimes no different from the ground handling counterpart. You work for arik a company in receivership and you are absconding from duty. If you have any issue with your bosses or organization you go and sort it out with them. Arik is in receivership and its death is only a few months or years away. Reminds me of 2020 when pilots at airpeace protested and engaged in strike action shortly after they resumed operations after 4 months of covid induced ban. One of them said airpeace was as good as dead as almost all their 737 aircrafts were unserviceable. The airline returned after a difficult 2020 and increased their staff salaries . They took delivery of 7 aircrafts in 2021 (5 directly purchased and 2 wetleased) and some of the unserviceable aircrafts were returned to service. Arik is a major airline in Nigeria and if it does well it will pay the pilots more. Most of the nigerian pilots who joined legacy carriers such as emirates, ethiopian, flydubai ... were once at arik. It gave them the opportunity to fly new generation 737s when no other airline in nigeria operated such. 15 Likes |

MPESA: Definitely. Emirates are in a world of their own as they are state funded and part/parcel of dubai. Without emirates airline Dubai itself will witness a sort of recession thus they get all necessary support from the government and can even spend as much as $50 million on just upgrading the interior of their aircraft. On its part ethiopian is also a good airline but not as great as emirates in terms of comfort and this is partly because they are not as rich and wealthy. Ethiopian's success on the african continent was also as a result of the failure of other african airlines to do what they were meant to do (south african airways, kenya airways, nigerian airways all went south). Arik failed to take advantage of their position in nigeria to be a force on the aftrican continent and nigerians were left once again in the hands of foreign airlines. At a point aviation professionals became jobless in nigeria due to the collapse of major airlines. Sometime in 2013 I was walking to board a dana aircraft at lagos airport and I saw two aircrafts with the livery discovery air and air peace. I quickly dissed both off as another packaged feat that would not last. But years later I consistently saw the fighting spirit of the airpeace CEO challenging all kinds of problems that are a threat to survival of airlines in nigeria. He is very much disliked for challenging the status quo from aviation consultants who make a living off foreign airlines undermining his efforts to FAAN officials to his competitors to the aviation ministry offcials to nigerian customs to his pilots and even the foreign airlines for their anti-competitive behavior. But today his airline remits the highest revenue to FG & its agencies among the domestic airlines which probably explains why the hostilities against his company seem to have reduced. I believe Nigeria is a hostile environment to operate in and thus when I see an airline going against strong winds I give kudos to them. Its not easy over 50 airlines have closed shop in this space 1 Like |

MPESA: To allay your fears Nigerian's airspace is safe. The narrative that nigerian airlines dont take maintenance seriously is just a perception . The same airpeace that is being bashed here went through the IOSA certification process thrice and passed. They went through the rigourous process of securing a commercial air transport license in China, South Africa and UAE. There boeing 777s are maintained by the Israeli Aerospace company. As part of their deal with embraer they have personnel from embraer on ground maintaining their aircrafts in LAgos. While everyone has the right to make their choice on what airline to chose to fly it shouldn't get to the point of assuming that airline A is not safe and airline B is safe. |
