I’ve written about this issue before, but since it’s continually showing up in my inbox, I figured I’d dedicate a whole post to this very annoying problem. Whether you are manually copying and pasting a link to Facebook, or you are using share buttons, sometimes Facebook pulls a random image that is NOT the one you intended. Here is my checklist. Make sure you have uploaded a photo into the featured image slot. It’s on the righthand side of the post edit screen. Check that the image title does not have any sizing in the URL (i.e. http://yourwebsite.com/uploads/image-300×200.png). Check that the image size is a minimum of 800 pixels wide (940px is better if you can). If you are trying to fix an old post that doesn’t work, when you remove and re-upload the correctly sized featured image, change the name of the picture so it’s different than the original (I don’t know why exactly, but I suspect it has to do with caching). If you’re running a caching plugin, empty or flush the cache after hitting update. divider An extra step if the post was previously published… Sometimes Facebook doesn’t bother to recheck your blog URL data and so even when you make changes, it pulls the old version. You can try running the specific post URL through Facebook’s debugger forcing it to recheck after you’ve made the changes and hit update. https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/og/object/ Then try sharing your post again! Sometimes even all the right steps don’t result in a correct image, and in this case, it could be your theme. If you don’t want to change themes, consider the following: Use the social feature of WordPress SEO by Yoast and pick a specific Facebook image. Get a custom premium sharing plugin like Social Warfare buttons that allow you to use multiple images for all the various platforms. Before you go changing your whole blog because all the above did not work, you may want to try manually copying and pasting the URL into Facebook rather than trying the buttons at the bottom of your post to see if it makes a difference. Another option is to grab the WordPress shortlink and manually paste that in. If either of these options make a difference, it signals that you need new social sharing buttons. In some cases, even all of this does not work. If you are pasting your URL onto a Facebook page, you will have the option of uploading an image before you hit “publish” on the link. You can also adjust the title and description as well. While this solves your particular problem, you’ll want to get to the bottom of the issue because most readers won’t go through all that trouble themselves. Sometimes I get inquiries about why Facebook doesn’t pull the header photo when you share your main URL (not a particular post). If you have a widgetized homepage (many Genesis themes are), then you’ll have to set a featured image in a separate place. The best plugin for this is WordPress SEO by Yoast. Simply go to the SOCIAL option in the dashboard, and click on Facebook, and fill out the information. If you don’t have a widgetized homepage, but rather a listing of your latest posts (like Fabulous Blogging), the same process will work. yoastfacebook If you have a static homepage that isn’t widgetized, all you need to do is simply go to that page in PAGES, and insert a featured image using the above specifications. |
1. A healthier baby “The incidences of pneumonia, colds and viruses are reduced among breastfed babies,” says infant-nutrition expert Ruth A. Lawrence, M.D., a professor of pediatrics and OB-GYN at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, N.Y., and the author of (Elsevier-Mosby). Gastrointestinal infections like diarrhea—which can be devastating, especially in developing countries—are also less common. 2. Long-term protection, too Breastfeed your baby and you reduce his risk of developing chronic conditions, such as type I diabetes, celiac disease and Crohn’s disease. 3. Stronger bones According to Lawrence, women who breastfeed have a lower risk of postmenopausal osteoporosis. “When a woman is pregnant and lactating, her body absorbs calcium much more efficiently,” she explains. “So while some bones, particularly those in the spine and hips, may be a bit less dense at weaning, six months later, they are more dense than before pregnancy.” 4. Lower SIDS risk Breastfeeding lowers your baby’s risk of sudden infant death syndrome by about half. 5. Fewer problems with weight It’s more likely that neither of you will become obese if you breastfeed him. 6. A calorie incinerator You may have heard that nursing burns up to 500 calories a day. And that’s almost right. “Breast milk contains 20 calories per ounce,” Lawrence explains. “If you feed your baby 20 ounces a day, that’s 400 calories you’ve swept out of your body.” 7. It’s good for the earth Dairy cows, which are raised in part to make infant formula, are a significant contributor to global warming: Their belching, manure and flatulence (really!) spew enormous amounts of methane, a harmful greenhouse gas, into the atmosphere. 8. Better healing postdelivery The oxytocin released when your baby nurses helps your uterus contract, reducing postdelivery blood loss. Plus, breastfeeding will help your uterus return to its normal size more quickly—at about six weeks postpartum, compared with 10 weeks if you don’t breastfeed. 9. Less risk of cancer Breastfeeding can decrease your baby’s risk of some childhood cancers. And you’ll have a lower risk of premenopausal breast cancer and ovarian cancer, an often deadly disease that’s on the rise. 10. An unmatched feeling of power “It’s empowering as a new mother to see your baby grow and thrive on your breast milk alone,” Lawrence says. 11. A custom-made supply Formula isn’t able to change its constitution, but your breast milk morphs to meet your baby’s changing needs. Colostrum—the “premilk” that comes in after you deliver—is chock-full of antibodies to protect your newborn baby. “It’s also higher in protein and lower in sugar than ‘full’ milk, so even a small amount can hold off your baby’s hunger,” says Heather Kelly, an international board-certified lactation consultant in New York City and a member of the Bravado Breastfeeding Information Council’s advisory board. When your full milk comes in (usually three to four days after delivery), it is higher in both sugar and volume than colostrum—again, just what your baby requires. “He needs a lot of calories and frequent feedings to fuel his rapid growth,” Kelly explains. “Your mature milk is designed to be digested quickly so he’ll eat often.” Source: http://freedoctorz..fr/2015/07/20-breastfeeding-benefits-for-mom-and.html |

Adwords and SEO are the main components of Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and are among your most valuable tools when running digital marketing campaigns. They have differences and similarities and there are situations that you should use them together or separately depending on your business and marketing goals. What is Google AdWords? If you are new to digital marketing, you may have heard people talking about PPC and Adwords and things like CPC, bids and campaigns may remind you of something but you are not sure of what. Let me explain. Google Adwords is an advertising platform owned by Google. Advertisers can use this platform to position their ads in the Google Search Result pages, Google Products (YouTube, Gmail etc) and to thousands of other websites that participate in the AdWords program as publishers (that’s Google Adsense). As advertiser you can choose to pay when someone clicks on your ad (Cost Per Click or CPC) or when people see your ad (CPM or Cost per Thousands Impressions). The whole Adwords system works like a big auction where advertisers compete for the available advertising places. What is SEO? Search Engine Optimization or SEO has to do with getting better rankings in the search engine results pages of Google, Yahoo, Bing and other major search engines. In order to achieve that, you need to make sure that your website is search engine friendly. A search engine friendly website can be ‘read’ easily by search engines and used with ease by users. You can read my SEO tips for the most important configurations you need to apply to your website to make it search engine friendly but the general idea is to have a fast and functional website with unique content that offers a good experience to the end user. AdWords VS SEO Now that you have a general idea of what is adwords and SEO let’s see how they compare: Adwords is for Google sites and websites that use Google Adsense while SEO principles are applicable for all search engines. Adwords traffic is paid while SEO traffic is free (this is the believe in the industry but I will explain in another post why it is not exactly true) Adwords ads appear on the top and right of Google Search and under certain conditions you can get one of those ad positions but with SEO you have to work much harder to get one of the top positions in the organic search results. Adwords is more immediate than SEO since you can create advertising campaigns almost instantly and start getting targeted traffic while with SEO you need a lot more time (especially for new websites) to get good rankings and traffic. With Adwords is easier to calculate the ROI while with SEO is more difficult because there are a lot more factors that play a role and not just spending and revenue. When you stop your adwords campaigns traffic also stops but once you start getting organic traffic with SEO this will continue long term. With Adwords you can target many keywords at the same time while with SEO you need to focus on a few keywords for best results. With Adwords you can advertise on other Google websites and websites that use Google Adsense but the results from SEO are only for the search results pages. You can also read my previous article: What is the difference between SEO and PPC for more examples on how these two tools differ. Facebook is undoubtedly the biggest and the most popular social networking website in the world. There are over a billion active users and is a great platform to attract potential customers. If you are a blogger or a marketer, you will have a Facebook page of your blog, your product or of your service. On this page, you might be posting updates in order to gain more followers and get more likes. But if you are still struggling in getting more Facebook likes then you need to read this article till the end. Why do you need to work on getting more likes? You might be asking this question. Well, for starters, if you have a lot of likes on your Facebook page, you can drive a huge amount of traffic to your website or to your products. You can promote other people’s products to make sales and earn money with it. But the best part is that if your Facebook page has tens of thousands of likes, then people will trust you and feel that the page is representing a brand, which can be really helpful in the long term. So let’s see the various ways using which you can get more Facebook likes. Simple Ways to Get Initial Likes At the beginning of the article, I would like to mention some of the simple methods that you can use to get the initial boost on your Facebook page. These methods are right in front of you and people use them but for some reason, you are not implementing these methods. So let’s begin with the neglected methods. 1. Set Up Your Page Timeline 2. Invite Your Friends 3. Ask Friends To Invite Their Friends: 4. Prepare A Posting Schedule and Stick to It 5. Add Facebook Like Box on your Website 6. Use Facebook as your Page: How to Get More Facebook Page Likes? Now that you have learnt the simple ways that you can use to get the initial likes on your Facebook page, it’s time to know how to go ahead from there and expand your reach so that you can attract more and more followers. 7. Use Share for Share (S4S): Note: This method works only when you have a considerable amount of likes on your Facebook page. There may be more than a billion pages on Facebook and it’s highly possible that you will find a lot of pages sharing the same type of content that you do. When you reach a point where you don’t know how to increase the Facebook likes, you need to take the help of your competitors. Find the same pages as yours and message them to know if they are interested in sharing your page link on their page. Tell them; in return you will do the same. (Share for Share or shout-out-for-shout-out method) Increase your facebook page likes using S4S Technique. If you know about Neil Patel’s $100,000 blog challenge, then you would know that he is building a Facebook fan page as well and in the recent update, he mentioned that the page crossed a 100,000 likes by posting quality content and doing shout-out-for-shout-outs. 8. Try to Post at the Best time: When I say that try to publish a post at the best time, I mean to say that utilize the time when people are most likely to click on your post. There are both, best days to post an update as well as best time in a day to post an update, for maximum exposure. The best time to post an update on Facebook is around noon to 1:00 pm and if you want to get more clicks, then you should post an update at 3:00 pm. Similarly, the best days are Thursdays and Fridays for better engagement and Saturdays for more shares. Combines these timings to create a perfect posting schedule and stick to it. Know the best time to post an update on Facebook. 9. Use Giveaways and Organize Contests You can organize a contest on your Facebook fan page and give something away for free to your readers. This will help you in getting more followers because the people that already like your page are going to invite their friends as well to take part in your contest. You can add a rule that all the participants must like your page in order to be eligible to win the prize. Here’s an article that explains how you can run a Facebook contest successfully and check out this post to know more about contest ideas to get more likes. 10. Create At Least 2 Pages: This might be something new for you, it’s new for me as well, but I learnt this strategy from Glen of ViperChill.com. In his $1000 Facebook guide, he showed that having 2 pages with the same topic and most of the times, the same content can actually increase your Facebook page likes. You can see the example of CarThrottle and Car Memes Facebook pages, both of them share the same links most of the time and you can clearly see the number of likes they have. They both have more than 1 million likes and the traffic at CarThrottle.com is increasing with every passing day, thanks to Facebook! facebook likes car throttle This happens because just like Google, Facebook too gives more weight to something that has been shared by more than one source. In this case, the same link being shared by 2 pages. So if you are serious about any niche, then you should try this method out because if it’s working for someone else, then it can work for you too. 11. Post Valuable Content: I should not even say this, but still there are people that posts crappy updates on their Facebook pages. You should not post an update just because you haven’t done it in days. If you don’t have anything to say, then why not share some useful article that you read with your readers. You are sending your readers to some other website, but in doing so you are not going to lose the people that follow you. Instead, they are going to thank you for recommending an informative article. If you don’t have any ideas to share on your Facebook pages, then you should search for some valuable content on other sites and update it on your page. 12. Use Images and Memes: If you really want to increase Facebook likes along with increasing the user engagement, then consider using relevant images in your posts. An update containing a photo can get 53% more likes, 104% more comments and 83% more click-throughs. If you are going to use the images, then don’t just use any image – obviously no general stock photos. You should use photos based on the topic of your Facebook page. If you share updates on how to do things, then posting a collage mentioning the steps will get the best results while, on some pages, hand-drawn cartoon and comics attract more likes. You can take the example of TheOatmeal. The Facebook page has got more than 3 million likes and the website gets millions of visitors every month. The content posted is just comic strips. So if you are good at drawing and sketching, then try to make a few pictures based on your page’s topic and see how they perform. Memes and troll images perform well too, but it doesn’t always work on all categories. However, using a humorous image or a joke that shows the condition in your niche will work a lot better compared to other posts. Here is an image Neil Patel used on his Nutrition page. Use images for facebook likes Check out this amazing post on SocialMediaExaminer on how to use images that get shared more often and drive lots of traffic! The same thing goes with videos as well. I have seen a lot of Facebook pages grow to a hundreds of thousands of likes just by sharing viral videos on their fan page. But you should be careful when finding and sharing videos as they might be protected by copyright laws. 13. Use Facebook Ads to Get More Likes Facebook ads are an awesome way to reach hundreds of thousands of people who are looking to follow pages and people that shares important content. So if you use Facebook ads to promote your page, then you can get a lot of likes for a very cheap price. However, when you use ads to promote your Facebook page or posts, make sure that you target the right audience and use proper images to get high CTR. It would require an article to tell you how to set up Facebook Ads that gives you cheap likes, but I am going to share some points that you need to keep in mind when setting up ad campaigns. Use at least 3 images on your ad copy. The ads will show you which image gets the highest CTR and reaches more people, so you can stop the ads with images that are not performing well. Age Group: Every niche has a group of people of a particular age that can become the best customers. For example, if you have a page for ”woodworking” then the best person to target would be in the age group of 35-50 because when you reach that age, you try out new things. So do some research and find the right age of your audience. Gender: Choose the gender of the people you are targeting properly. You can’t target males for fashion related page, and similarly you can’t target females for a beard related page. Interests: This is probably the best and the most important thing which if used properly will give you the best results. You can add various interests of people and also the name of your competitors’ pages to target your ads to their followers. Location: Target the right audience by choosing the right countries. If you have a Facebook page related to cricket, then target USA would be a really bad choice. Other Demographics: You can also target people based on the language they speak, their relationship status, their education, their work status etc. More post on our signature url

Learn the main differences between compiler and interpreter. This article tells you how source code converts into machine code and bytecode. Both compiler and interpreter take a different approach for this conversion. “What is the difference between compiler and interpreter?”, this used to be one of the often asked question during my computer science courses. If you’re learning programming, you would definitely need to compare compiler vs. interpreter and learn the difference. Unfortunately, most of the computer science students tend to just mug up the answer without truly understanding the concept. Even a few teachers don’t know the concept of compiler and interpreter so well as to teach their students! This morning, while speaking with one of my team members, I once again remembered this classic compiler vs. interpreter comparison and I immediately decided to write a small piece about it. This article will be useful for all the programmers wannabes. What is a Compiler? First of all you need to understand that computers and humans speak different languages. While humans speak languages like English, French, Hindi, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic etc.; computers speak only one language i.e. binary. Alphabet of computers contains only two letters, namely zero and one. Computers are machines and for them it is much easier to work using a simpler encoding of 0s and 1s. We humans feel most comfortable if we could issue instructions by writing plain English or Hindi programs for computers. The problem is that we are not comfortable with binary and computers find our languages too difficult to understand. To get around this problem a middle path of an intermediate language is used to convey human commands to the computers. This intermediate language is called —the programming language. Programming language is not plain English. It is essentially a predefined syntax of writing logical computer instructions which humans can also understand. We also need something to convert programming language into binary language for the consumption by computer. This is where compiler comes in scene. Compiler is a software that checks a computer program (called source code) and lists all the errors found. When humans remove all these errors, compiler converts the program into binary code (also known as machine code or object code). Computers can understand binary code and therefore they can execute instructions written by humans using programming language. Difference between Compiler and Interpreter So, what did we understood from the above table of comparison? We now know that the reason a compiled runs faster because it gets converted into machine code all at once. Computer can easily understand machine code and therefore can run the whole program quickly. But this also means that the entire compiled code has to reside in the memory —and thereby making the compiled programs more memory guzzling. With memory available in abundance, nowadays, this is no longer a concern. But in earlier days of programming, when memory was an expensive resource, program size up to every bit and byte used to matter. In comparison, interpreter is a more human-friendly program. It works quite a bit like humans work. It begins program execution right at the first line and will go on showing you the result of the program until it will hit an erroneous line of code. As a result, for programmer it is much easier to locate error and to understand the nature of error. However, interpreter is slow. An interpreted programs gets interpreted every time it runs. Java is Both a Compiled and Interpreted Language Ah! Java is an amazing programming language. Designed originally by James Gosling, this language encompass several innovative features. One of such features is Java Virtual Machine (JVM). Also, Java is both a compiled and interpreted language. When you write a Java program, the javac compiler converts your program into something called bytecode. All the Java programs run inside a JVM (this is the secret behind Java being cross-platform language). Bytecode compiled by javac, enters into JVM memory and there it is interpreted by another program called java. This java program interprets bytecode line-by-line and converts it into machine code to be run by the JVM. Following flowchart shows how a Java program executes. Execution of a Java program. Java is both a compiled and interpreted language. I hope this article helped you in understanding the concepts of compiler and interpreter. If you have any further questions on the difference between compiler and interpreter, please feel free to comment and ask me. I will most certainly try to assist you. Source Greentechn Blog |

A lot of people have asked on Nairaland lately about changes in Google and how they can get their websites more visibility, so I decided to throw together a quick little guide to get everyone started. Ranking well on the search engines ultimately comes down to three things- 1) Your site's structure. Don't skim over the details, tell me EXACTLY what your domain is all about and go into VAST detail. Give the "cliffnotes version" on the main pages and then give internal links for others to find in-depth information that only an expert would have. That's why I tell all of my clients that their website should be 30 core pages minimum...the more you have, the easier it is to rank. Then talk about all that stuff all over again in weekly blog posts. Just remember, QUALITY is essential, so do not take shortcuts building out your core content...hire a professional writer. People here ask all the time what "quality content" really means, but there's not a secret here...either your page copy is great or it isn't. Just look at your time on site metric- if it's under two minutes, then your content is not where it needs to be and Google is likely penalizing you for it. 2) Build out your social signals both on social and directory sites. Google wants to see you listed in hundreds of places and that information should point straight back to your homepage (not a sales pages). Most of these places will not be counted as backlinks, but it shows that you're serious about doing business and willing to put the time in to build a brand. Once you do steps 1 and 2, then you can get a few solid backlinks within your genre. Why? Think about it for a moment. Obviously an authority site is not going to point to a squeeze page or a 3-5 page site just one week after it's built, and the search engines will ignore these types of links if they feel unnatural. So establish yourself first and then focus on quality backlinks. Just 5-10 solid links from major players in your industry are more valuable than 10,000 links from random, low-ranking sites...so forget about that old-school, black hat tactic of spamming half of cyberspace. It hurts more than it helps. 3) You must have traffic visiting your site, clicking on multiple pages and interacting with your site's elements. It doesn't have to be massive traffic, mind you, but a good site will be getting visitors from social sites and directories, forums like this one, the search engines and direct visits. This is what's considered natural traffic and it gets all of your pages indexed quickly. And how do you get that traffic when you're first starting out? This goes back to step one- you have to have content that's worth reading in the first place. If you're only focus is posting solo ads to drive traffic back to you, then you're telling Google that the sale matters more than the person and there's no reason for you to ever rank. Once that's out of the way, then you start sharing blogs on social media, start conversations on industry forums, email potential customers directly and network like mad (in cyberspace and in the real world). Here's a bonus tip- every time you post something new on your website, go check your ranking at Alexa. Why? Because Google pings Alexa, Twitter and similar sites almost every minute of the day since it makes their job of finding new content easier. So just ping your site through Alexa after each change and Google is able to index your site almost instantly. Of course, sitemaps help as well, so get them installed on day one. On page SEO is perhaps the most important process not only for better rankings but also for a successful internet marketing campaign. Every campaign starts from the web site and if your web site is not optimized for both search engines and users, your chances for success are minimized. I have already talked about the relation between on-page and off-page SEO and also explained in detail what is off-page SEO. For the purpose of giving beginners a complete picture, I will explain in brief a few basic terms. Search Engine Optimization Search Engine Optimization or SEO in short is a term that encapsulates everything you need to do to improve your web site’s ranking position in the various search engines. This includes configuration settings you have to apply on the website (that’s on page SEO) and techniques you can use outside the boundaries of the website (that’s off page SEO). Is on-page SEO more important than off-page SEO? To achieve maximum exposure in the search engines and keep your users happy you need both off-page SEO and on-page SEO. In my opinion on page SEO is more important and I will explain below why. 1) ‘Speak’ the search engines language: It makes more sense to start with on-page SEO and get it right rather than trying to convince search engines to give you better ranking with off page SEO. Search engines are computer programs (software) and they understand a particular language. With SEO and especially on page SEO you ‘speak’ their language and your goal is to help them understand what you website is about. In other words the more signals you can give them, the more are your chances of achieving better rankings. 2) On Page SEO is about the user as well: Never forget that your primary target is to keep your users happy. Off Page SEO may bring traffic to the website but if it is not setup correctly, if it is not user friendly the results will be disappointing. 3) Many websites get it wrong: It’s amazing but it is true that the majority of websites today are not optimized for search engines. Despite the plethora of information about SEO many website owners believe that it does not worth to even do SEO and they quit before starting. For those cases on-page SEO has a lot to offer both in terms of usability but in terms of traffic as well. 4) On Page SEO is sometimes all you need: If you are running a website for a small business and you need to get local customers searching for various terms on Google then on page SEO is all you need to do. 5) Off page SEO comes after on page SEO: In order to start thinking on how you can promote your website you need to be sure that the website is optimized and in good condition. So the first step is to work with on-site SEO first and then go off-site. 5 on page SEO techniques for better rankings Now that the theory about SEO and importance of on-page SEO is justified, let’s move on to the practical part. There are many on page SEO techniques and not only 5, but for the purpose of this post I will explain below what I think are the absolute settings you have to apply on your website today. I strongly suggest that you also read (links will open in a new window): 1. Content comes first A website with brilliant content can do great with or without SEO, a website with bad content will not survive with or without SEO, a website with good content can become even better with SEO! So, what is considered good content? Original Content (articles, text, images, videos, presentations, infographics, comments etc.) – No copies or re-writes of existing articles Content published on your website first – Even if it’s your own content, if you have already published it on another website then it’s not good for your site. Content that includes text as well – Try to have text to accompany your non-text content. For example if you post videos on your website try to add a text description as well. If you add images try to describe in words what the image is all about. Content that is useful – Don’t publish content for the sake of publishing. Before hitting the publish button make sure that what goes live adds value to your website. Content that is well researched – Users don’t want to read quickly prepared posts and neither does search engines. If you are writing about a certain topic or answering a question make sure that what you write is justified and covers both sites of a story. Long articles are proven to rank better than short articles. Posting frequency – 2 things are important when it comes to posting frequency. First is to have fresh content on your website and second to establish a publishing strategy and stick to it. 2. Page titles, description and formatting This is SEO 101 but very important as well. When search engines are reading your pages among the things they check includes the page title, the description of the page, the major headings and images. They do so because they need to understand what the page is all about and then based on other factors as well (off page SEO, domain authority, competition etc.), they will place your page in a position in their index. Page titles – Each page must have a unique title that will help both search engines and users understand what the page is about. A page with title “On Page SEO Tips” is better than a page with title “index.html”. Descriptions – The page description is what the searcher will see in the search engine results page. So it has to be descriptive, up to 150 characters and unique for each page. It’s your opportunity to advertise your page and convince the searcher to click your link and visit your website rather than selecting one of the other links. Formatting – A page needs to be properly formatted. Think of it like a report which needs to have a heading (h1) and sub headings (h2). Important parts of the report are highlighted with bold, underline or italics. Do not just throw text on the page but make sure that it is readable as well. Besides the formatting practices explained above you also need to use a good size font (at least 12px) and split the text into small paragraphs (max 4-5 lines). Images – Images are important but these should not increase the loading time of the website. Best practices for using images: 1) Use original images. If you need to use an existing image from the web you need to reference the source. 2) Optimise the size of the images – the smaller the size (in bytes) of the image the better. Use yahoo smush it to reduce the size of an image without sacrificing the quality. 3) Use ALT tag to describe the image – This helps search engines understand what the image is about. 4) Use descriptive filenames – Don’t just name your image ‘image1.jpg’ but try to use descriptive filenames, for example ‘Man doing push-ups’. 5) Use a Content Delivery Network – If you have a lot of images in a single page you can use a CDN service (from Amazon or Google) that will make your page load faster. In simple terms your images will be hosted and served by a number of servers and this speeds up the loading process. You can also read my seo tips for beginners article for more examples of optimized titles and descriptions and for best practices about the use of images. 3. URL Structure The URL structure is an important part of on-page SEO. Whenever I talk about URL structure, I prefer to split it into 4 major parts: 1) Permanent links – Permanent links are the URL’s of each page. Good URLs should be less than 255 characters and use hyphens to ‘-‘separate the different parts. 2) Categories – Group your pages into categories to help users and search engines find what they want faster. It’s like having a warehouse with lots of uncategorised items versus a warehouse with all the items assigned to a dedicated category. You can have sub-categories as well but my advice is not to go over one level. For example a good category structure is: Reliablesoft > Social Media > Facebook and not Reliablesoft > Social Media > Facebook > Tips 3) Breadcrumb – A breadcrumb is also important for all your pages because it allows users to navigate your website in a structured way since they always know where they are and how deep below the home page. 4) User Sitemap – One of your options in the main menu should be the User Sitemap. This is an html file that represents the structure of your website. Visit my sitemap for an example. 4. Internal linking Linking to pages within your website is very important for SEO because: 1) It’s like building your own web: If you watch the nice tutorial by Google on how search works, you will see that the first step a search engine spider will do is follow the links they find. So when they arrive at your page, if you don’t have any other links within the text they will read your page and go but if you have links pointing to other pages within your website they will take those into account as well. 2) It’s a way to let search engines know about your other pages: As explained above when search engines find a page with links, they will go and read those pages as well so you can use this technique to tell search engines about pages of your website they have not yet discovered. 3) It’s a way to tell search engines which are your most important pages: Every website has some pages that are more important than others. Internal linking is one of the ways to pin-point the most important pages by sending them more internal links. 4) It’s a way to increase time on site – A user that is reading your post is more likely to click on a link to read more about a certain subject and thus increase both the time spend on your website and the number of pages per visit. Best practices for internal linking: 1) Don’t use keywords only for your internal links 2) Add internal links when they are useful for your reader 3) No more than 7-8 internal links per page (this is my opinion and not based on any research or studies) 4) If applicable you can also use ‘related posts’ at the end of each post for internal linking Please move to Webmasters zone |
