I have an interview for first week in March 2023 for B1/B2 visa. I am a teacher in a private school owned by a family member. My uncle in the US gave me an invitation to US to come learn how his children school run their curriculum and come back to Nigeria to implement that system in the school where I currently teach. My plan is to travel during the holiday and come back to Nigeria before resumption.

What are the likely questions to expect from the Visa Officer during the interview?

Dear op and respondents
Based on the Japa syndrome, these are my dilemmas:
1) I got an offer of a postdoc in US for a 2yrs stay with possible offer of becoming a faculty member (I am not sure if I will be taken as a faculty member). The pay is $65k/annum

2) with the recent offer of a QTS visa by UK for qualified teachers. I am also very much interested based on variations in the number of years US (2yrs): UK (5yrs - so I heard)

Note: I want to get into the US or UK using (but not limited to) the academic root and possibly diversify later on

These are my challenges
1) I am a sickle cell patient. I hope I am not taking much risk based on my health? How's the health system in US compared to UK?
2) on skills: I officially left music production in 2014 to focus on my academics. So, on skills, how lucrative is music production in both countries?
3) Based on academic skills: I can perform most computer based simulation in chemistry/biology including DFT experiments, molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulation, and other computational chemistry/biology techniques with little or no difficulties
4) I would love to switch probably from class room teacher to a full time lecturer (if UK is found worthy). How possible and easy can it be?
5i) How lucrative is teaching job in the UK?
5ii) Do the country (UK) permit home lessons?
5iii) Can I combine class room teaching with other side hustle

*** My intention is to stay there for ten years and come back and invest but if I find their land fruitful, I will stay a little longer than expected

Take the US postdoc offer. Publish 2-3 papers and apply for permanent residency by the end of year 2 in EB1B category. Your computer skills give you a huge edge. once you get a green card, you can do whatever you like.

Applying for a US visa should be relatively easy for you. Your school can apply for a H1B visa (you bypass the lottery since you’re working for a school program). Once it’s approved, you merely go to the embassy to stamp the visa. Don’t lose the opportunity… your educational profile is very impressive.

Your postdoc job comes with good healthcare benefits too so you should be ok.

They don't have to. They built a country that allows them to pay a fraction in taxes and get that MSC for free or at ridiculously low rates. The 20,000 pounds tuition fee is for folks like you who should not be allowed to come in and enjoy the fruits of their labor since you did not contribute a penny in taxes to their society.

Your problem isnt that you arent smart, its that you have been raised in a completely dysfunctional society. Let me explain below:

You are not very smart, i will give you eg look at Kanye west he and his wife are rich. They are asking him to pay his wife 200000$ every month for upkeep. If he defaults he can have an asset seized or go to jail. Very easy to bankrupt a person because of their simpish legal system that is gayish at heart.

The judge sets child support payments (end when the child is 18) based on your income. Kanye earns approximately $180m/year. It means that at worst, Kanye takes home a minimum of $9m/month after taxes. A child support payment of $20k/month is a mere 0.2% of his total income. If you earn $40,000 per year, no judge is going to ask you to pay half of that a month in child support.

Im comparing Nigeria to the west , if you build a house in Nigeria there nothing like yearly property tax. That property tax is determined by the size of your house and where you live. What is the need for the tax after buying something outright.

This is why Nigeria remains a hell hole, your ability to think critically is virtually non-existent here and it’s clear you don’t understand how taxes work in the west. Property tax isn’t a tax on the cost of your home. It’s the cost of everything you enjoy by having your home situated in that location. The property taxes you pay in the US goes to maintain schools (K-12 schools are free in the US), roads, fire service, 911, local hospitals, recreational facilities, etc. You may not pay any property taxes after you buy your house in Nigeria, but you spend far more than that to send your kids to expensive private schools, build/maintain your own borehole, fuel your generator, maintain your roads. You are your own fire service, ambulance and 911 service. Good luck to you.

There is still income tax over earnings you make in a year. So its a system of compounded taxation. There is still VAT, state tax, county tax.
If you profit from a business, you will pay gains tax etc.

Part of your federal income tax in the US goes to social security and medicare. It means you have guaranteed retirement income and medical coverage after you turn 65. In Nigeria, once you turn 65, you are on your own. See any Americans dying on queues to get their retirement income? Me neither.

State income taxes cover unemployment insurance. What that means is if i lose my job, i can get paid a percentage of my last paycheck for 2 years while i look for a job. Does that exist in Nigeria?

Yes western countries levy several taxes, but these taxes have their benefits, benefits that do not exist in Nigeria.

You seem confused. In the US, my total taxes represent less than 40% of my total income. That leaves me with plenty of disposable income to enjoy life. An added advantage is all the everyday freedoms i take for granted - excellent and responsive healthcare facilities (even your presidents don't trust your hospitals), good roads, security, constant water, gas and electricity, peace of mind, excellent schools for my child paid for with my taxes... exactly what are you enjoying in Nigeria? Can you pick your car and just do a cross country drive for fun?

There are some old retires that have lost everything they worked for because they couldnt keep up with the taxation and guess what if you dont pay you will have lawsuits against you. Dont answer the lawsuit either jail or confiscation of your asset.

This isn't true. Retirees pay taxes conmmensurate with what they earn - either social security, 401K or pensions. Compared to old retirees in Nigeria, retirees in the US are living in eldorado.

This is not a very smart way to look at things.

None of this is true. The system is designed to protect the weak. Nigerian men are used to a culture that permits abuse. It's always a shock to the system moving to a society that gives the weaker spouse the power to stand up to your abuse. Black men are no more at the bottom of the totem pole in the West compared to Nigeria.

The idea that you get anything for free in the West is a misnomer. Nothing is free.

Paying a house off after 20 years makes sense. It's why westerners don't feel the pressure to steal government money... since they can easily own a home while making payments commensurate with what they honestly earn. The average Nigerian family can never buy a house just on their salary alone. Your house can be taken away if you fail to pay your tax... that is a good thing as it keeps everyone honest. Your comparison is to a Nigeria where there are no consequences for failing to pay your tax. That's why the country is a hell hole.

My fiancee was given a conditional admission into Boston university MSc to write a prerequisite Maths course, from the email we shared it was said that the course can be done in the school or a regionally accredited institution...I believe that means the course has to be done in the US/UK.

Is it possible she request for financial aid even tho she is not fully admitted as the conditions states she will only be offered unconditional admission if she gets a "B" in the maths course, and i believe she will have to pay for the course as well based on one of their events attended.

She is considering taking student loan in case the school doesn't offer scholarship.

Pls advice.

She won’t be offered aid with a conditional admission. She should go elsewhere if she can’t afford it.

To avoid stories that touch, ask him to get a letter from his school (preferably his ISO) detailing why he is coming back late and that this was approved.

And this has nothing to do with the fact that your school was resuming on the 7th and your interview was on the 4th

Every V.O knows that a student can request for late arrival letter from their school and if that was the problem, she would have asked you to tender your letter of late arrival
Also, after an interview, it takes only 3 working days for visa to be printed on your passport. So your visa would have come out on that same 7th and you can pickup and travel on the 8th which is not late

The only reason why you were denied is because the USA want to reduce the number of Nigerians they issue visas to. They are basically denying everyone whether you have been to the US or not

I was denied last year, I had a full tuition waiver and had been to the US and Canada between 2015/2017 and I was denied for no reason

The sooner Nigerians realize that USA don’t want we Nigerians in their country, the better for us.

I got accepted into two MPH programs in the USA: Tulane and NYU to start this January.

The decisions came in December last year. I’m yet to get the i20. One of the schools sent in an affidavit of support to fill. Total estimate is about 65k USD (30 m). I want to use my dads account as my sponsor/guarantor. The problem is he has only 7m in his account. I don’t know if I can also use my late mums account. She has 5m in that account. Also what are my chances of even getting a visa as resumption date is very close and I don’t even have i20 yet.

I’ll appreciate all suggestions and comments.

Don’t bother, you cannot afford the cost of your education. It’s already too late to apply for a visa in time for a January start date.

You are the classic example of the failure of the Nigerian educational system. A 4.04/5 GPA and yet you need someone to "put you through the course of study", you're not even sure what you want to study, whether it should be a masters or PhD and the uni you would like to attend? embarrassing.

Yes got my admission letter two months ago with 50% tuition notched off. I managed to convince and stated my interest but I think the next phase I feel VO need to be more convinced as I think that is the rigorous phase to land the pali to study this course.

Whatever you wrote in obtaining your admissions, tell that to the vo.

You can apply to as many schools in whichever country you please.

The utility of this thread has diminished over time. It used to be populated by highly motivated, industrious folks who were diligently looking to school outside Nigeria. Today it’s mostly lazy folks who want you to do the search for them and tell them what to say. As soon as they get “their” visa, they disappear.

That's not true, TW. I understand the intricacies of clinching such RA-ships, so believe me when I say that I researched the life out of this man. I can't post the entire correspondence here, but I had shared my enthusiasm to learn in his lab and intentions to apply what he literally does to Nigeria's PH system, which is why he shared that info about working internationally...and implies the possibility of adding Nigeria to it.

I'm mostly disturbed by the mention of a second year, but even now, I kind of feel like I'm overthinking it. Because he said most and not all my lab work and the reality is that MPH students, do get assistantships in that department, right of the bat. So yes, I have sent an email to ask him about how we may proceed and I hope for the best.

His response is fairly straightforward, the problem is you haven’t bothered to do your homework.

He is saying that while his group does a lot of research work, it’s not clear that you’re a good fit for his group. Your MPH program likely allows for only limited research work and mostly in your second year practicuum. He is however willing to chat with you if there are specific research areas you are interested in that could be a good fit for them too.

Get the school to issue you a formal letter extending your start date by at least 2 weeks. As it stands, you will be denied a visa as it’s too late for CBP to grant you entry.
