1. What percentage of Nigerians earn N500k/month?
2. Why should I pay income taxes every year yet have to provide my own borehole, electricity, security and enough savings to travel to India for basic life saving treatment?

The point isn’t to laud living abroad, it’s to point out the utterly and laughably deluded idea that just because you won the birth lottery, anyone “with a little financial literacy, can live well and fine” in Nigeria. Good luck with your inverter… no one uses that in serious countries.

Now, even 1% is about 2million people, meaning a little above 50000 ppl per state. You saying about 50000ppl per state don't use inverter shows how WILDY out of touch this point is. Again, inverter setup in most homes is pretty commonplace these days. Stop the habit of throwing percentages or stats without having a full or partial grasp of what you are saying. I would say at the very least 15% of people use inverters as at now. It doesn't have to be a mega setup, with one chinco Suoer inverter of less than 20k, charger of
about 15-20k and a good 200-220ah battery of about 120-150k, you are good to go, even now wey naira don cast...it beats fuelling gen daily. I only put my gen on once or twice a year when long power cuts of like a week long or more happen, which is very very rare.

Also, I typed clearly that I didn't even get to 500k/month before I resigned to face business. Just to let you know that most of my shit was sorted even without earning very big money. But you have to consider that for someone like TW who has lived abroad for a very long time, he and others like him are accustomed to a certain lifestyle and desire to be within certain facilities and amenities many places outside Lagos cannot afford. My major issue is insecurity. It is Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs at work. As for building houses/flats to rent, provided they earn in naira, that makes sense. Not using dollar earnings to invest and get naira returns, except it is long-term business investments like factories and service deliveries.

You hit the mail on the head. The issue of inverters is fairly new to me… they weren’t a thing when I left Nigeria. I can admit Nigerians can build homes, but frankly so what? I own my home, through the mortgage system. I have enough equity in it to build 2-3 mansions in Nigeria. But here’s what I can’t compromise - peace/security, excellent schools that are free for the first 16 years of my child’s life, excellent healthcare system, which means every medical issue isn’t potentially life threatening, never having to “pray” for visas just to travel to South Africa. There are way too many intangibles we tend to ignore when we reduce everything to “I can build a house outright”.

As @Treadway himself admits, he benefits from a Nigeria having little to no regulations… that is a non-starter for me. I like an ordered society where I don’t have to drive past mounds of rotting garbage daily on my way back to my mansion sealed off with 15 foot barbed wire fences.

It is actually very easy to build in Nigeria thanks to lack of regulations. Not everyone will live in Lagos, as Nigeria does not start and end there. I got mine sorted before I got married at age 30. Buy land today and with enough funds on standby even with the horrendous exchange rate you will build a 3-bed tastefully with 15m total (land cost inclusive). Buying is even easy now, 6-7m and you'll still get a 3-bed in an okay area. It always easier and cheaper to buy houses as people only sell houses out of desperation. Ppl selling lands are not usually desperate to sell. Smart people are buying property for really cheap rates at the moment. Screw Bitcoin, buy houses!

PS: I never even got to 500k monthly salary till 2020 when I resigned to face business squarely. Sales reps in good companies/multinationals like Merck, BAT wey I know dey build block of 4-6flats, most of them still under 40. Artisans,meat sellers sef get their own house. Fancy or not, it is theirs. So scratch the only the wealthy can own house thought.

None of the folks you mention here represent close to 1% of Nigeria's population. The exception is not the rule. You make N500k/month… how many Nigerians make that amount?

Much of this is meaningless… the Nigerian economy (or whatever is left of it) has ZERO positive impact on more than 90% of its populace. Take away oil (which is heavily dependent on foreign oil companies), the Nigerian “economy” is no better than that of Burkina faso.

The idea that “most Nigerians can easily build their houses” is false. <0.001% can truly afford it. Most of those who can afford it do so by stealing public funds. How many Nigerians can truly build homes on their legitimately earned income? The average American can own a home on an average pay check.

I’m one of those who left more than 15 years ago… it’s been more than worth it. Raising a child in an environment where he is guaranteed a good education, more than adequate healthcare, no concern for kidnappings or armed robbery, the ability to just get in the car and go on a weekend road trip, passports that don’t require visas… the choice is yours.

Also bleeding from nose and ears indicates severe head injury. The guy needed a neurosurgeon urgently which was why he was referred. The Glasgow coma score being low and the fact that he was probably drinking made the matter worse.
