By now you should have known that Nigerians are not that easy to convince to do the right thing once the mind is adamant to do what pleases them.

However, learning the hard way after being punished is how Nigerians learn.
Agreed. My concern is limited to the unsuspecting genuine travelers who increasingly have a harder time convincing VOs of genuine intent because of those who have gone ahead and ruined it for others. One has to learn very quickly that in Nigeria, the mantra is “me first, screw everyone else”.

Sometimes the embassy say they don't read the change of intent email. But the key is to pay her bills like you said.Circumstances can change after one gets the visa and the US embassy understands this.B2 can legally be used for medicals. Not an offence
The VOs have posted on Nairaland explicitly that they do not read the change of intent letter nor attach it to your file. This issue is no longer an issue of speculation.

Hello everyone ....I have been going to the embassy now for 5 times without been issued a visa,so I called a friend that opened my eyes to the mistake made by the agent i used .the school has it on my I20 that am sponsoring myself and on my Ds160 has it that my uncle is doing so .whenever the VOs ask I will tell them my uncle is sponsoring me unknowingly that my i20 has it that am using myself as sponsor .now I don't know what to do if I should change destination or still try it my luck .I also heard the embassy has it that record of reasons for denials that can be viewed by the present VO interviewing you .
Try your luck again but chances are the VOs have tagged you as not being a student but simply using that route to immigrate. You can’t make such a glaring error 5 times.

Denied Visa Transcript
Location: Lagos Consulate
Date/Time: January 2nd, 2020. 6.45AM

V. O: Good morning. Pass me your i20 and sevis receipt.

Me: Good morning (passes them)

V. O: why are you going to the US?

Me: I am going for my masters in Organisational communication in Bowie State University, Maryland, USA.

V. O: Why Bowie State University?

Me: I chose Bowie state university because it offers each individual student more interaction time with their instructor. Also, my coordinator, Dr. XXXXX area of research aligns with mine as he focuses on how communications affects certain race, gender and communities. I also searched usnews, com and mastersincommunications, com and there, Bowie state university has ratings of 4 out of 5 reviews.

V. O: Why Organisational communication?

Me: I'm very passionate about leadership and interacting with people. This program will enable me acquire skills on groups and organizational communications, issues and crisis management, mediation, conflict management and effective communication. This will enable me work as a human resource personnel in one of the top organizations in Nigeria and also help me be a voice for young women and orphans who have experienced some level of life's difficulties in my home country, Nigeria.

V. O: okay... What school did you get your bachelor's degree from?

Me: University of Ilorin, Nigeria.

V. O: what course did you study?

Me: History and International Studies.

V. O: okay... (starts typing)
(on my I20, it was there that my tuition & fees/expenses will be paid by my family in Maryland, USA) The V. O saw it and asked... Uhm. Family in Maryland, who is this family in Maryland?

Me: My uncle's family.

V.O: Uncle from where?

Me: my maternal uncle, he is my mother's younger brother.

V. O: *types continuously* Where does he live?

Me: I said the address

V. O: continues typing even while I mentioned the address, and then after typing, he brought out the pink slip and was like... Sorry, you are not eligible now. Try again later.

What could have gone wrong? On my I20, there is a Total funding of $23k (out of which tuition & fees, $11.8k) which will be paid for by my uncle. I wasn't even asked to present any document (SOA, sponsorship letter or the likes).

PS: Not mine, but for someone I helped prepare for the interview. cc Twoods, Lagosismyhome
There is only one predominant race in Nigeria.

Your “family in Maryland” establishes that you have a support system in the US that will most likely tilt you towards remaining in the US after your studies.

Sometimes some people don't have anyone in the US to invite them. We do not know the posters economic situation. I know several people whose first trip to the US was for a conference and till now i have built friendships with them. I once went for a conference through my job in California and i was surprised at how many African international attendees had only come to the US for the first time for the exhibition.

He has not stated that he is trying to abscond. He only asked a question. Let the VO officer who will evaluate his situation be the one to determine his eligibility.
Errrr huh

The poster specifically asked for websites where he can find conferences to sign onto and use as a basis to enter the US. That is clear fraudulent intent as the conference is not tied to anything other than to use as a loophole to beat the US immigration system.

I doubt you will listen to good advice... but let me just say, if you continue down this road, you will surely get caught at your interview. It will be noted on your travel record, then you’ll come back here asking why they keep denying your visa despite all your fasting and prayer.

What can I do?

Apply for a new visa and explain your change of intent at your interview. Or you can travel now and risk a refusal later

Technically Nigeria is a blacklisted country but just not announced officially. These interviews are indeed inequitable and unscrupulous judging from my last experience there where I was given an outright denial for no logical reason. If Bovi can be denied and Nigeria is basking on a 70% refusal rate, this is as good as a ban : Syria,Yemen,Afghanistan,Tajikistan,Somalia,Libya,Iran,Gambia,Djibouti and our very own Naija are on top the highest refusal rates.
PS: since my last refusal i have flown to Canada to follow up my medical condition. If it was life threatening na so person for don die since.
Did he do a show in the US (they all seem to come down to Houston) with a visiting visa? That would be abusing a visa and lead to a quick denial.

I think strongly that for some countries; you can actually travel with less than 6months validity.
I traveled to the US with less than 6months validity.

Nigeria has a kind of agreement or reciprocity policy with some countries that the citizens’ validity is deemed extended if it less that 6months. US has that with Nigeria. You can google it up.
You are very correct. I did a search and found that out... thanks for pointing it out.

I'm sponsoring my trip but ofcourse I can't tell them that. The plan is to talk to my uncle and make it look like He's the one sponsoring everything..I don't know if anyone has used the method before but it seems it's the only option I have.I wish there was an alternative.
Telling them I just want to visit isn't convincing enough I know, plus the fact that i don't have any travel history and I'm single too...I'm just confused though..But I really wanna leave..

Not necessarily true. A visitor isn’t really expected to add value to the US economy. They are only looking to ensure you will abide by the rules of your visa.

I need to clear up d bill which is about 500dollars...but how do i go about it so it wont affect my travelling for delivery next year?
Call the recovery agency directly. Their contact info is most likely on the document they sent you. They’ll guide you on how to pay off your bill.

The issue isn’t whether it is legal or not, it’s whether you abused the visa. It’s hard to convince a VO that you were not aware you’d need a visa to continue your rotations in 10 months when you applied for a visa to visit your sister. You should have mentioned that at the time.

It’s not your fault... the VOs have seen this type of tactic with people seeking to have their babies in the US and you’re simply paying the price.

No there was no medicaid to bail them out and they did not migrate the way migration is now. BUT they had solid education and jobs that gave them solid health insurance which they did not have to pay so much out of pocket for. Not everyone moves to America privilèged like they were and i always acknowledge that. They worked for the United Nations which is why they are global citizens. If America was founded with the aggression, rudeness and selfishness of people like you,
- You would not have been given a chance to migrate
- The so called medicare, medicaid and health care bills would not exist.
-America would not be what it is today as it was built on the hard work and resilience of many immigrants

The fact that someone needs public assistance now does not mean they would not better themselves, have solid jobs and become good tax payers contributing to the society in the near future.

You need to take a back seat and mind how you address people on the forum or else maybe you would be alone on this forum.
It’s a faceless forum, people come, people go. People have opinions and they don’t necessarily need to be in sync with yours.

You truly have no idea. You cannot sit behind your screen and type like you know people or their situation. He NEVER asked for a short cut. He wants to know what options are available to him as a new immigrant who is legally expecting a US citizen child. While I generally don’t support all these funny illegal migration and deceit, I think all the taxes people like me have paid including IRS adjustments to pay additional taxes since my bar admission and law school graduation without ever receiving any benefit is created for people who truly can not afford, it is ok for situations like this.because when he starts work he will probably pay it all back in taxes. It’s not like he’s taking this benefit and loving back to nigeria. My problem is with those who apply for visit and non immigrant visas and try to cheat the system.

Please be guided as I will not respond further to this matter since I do not know the individual in question. You don’t know him either or his financial situation. You don’t know if he moved through a type of humanitarian visa. You don’t know if he just truly has no funds after spending so much to move a pregnant wife from Nigeria. Please don’t compound people’s problems if you cannot help them.

Like I said he’s on the wrong forum. I’m sure there’s something for new immigrants on other Web sites.
There is a reason a public charge question is clearly listed on the i-485, to prevent situations like this. You can rail all you want. We pay taxes to help the poor, the disabled and those unable to work. We do not pay taxes so calculating immigrants can try to scam the system... if he has insurance and and job, he is not here on a humanitarian visa, simply trying to avoid out of pocket costs by offloading that on the unsuspecting public. If every immigrant treated the public till with such disdain, it would have ceased to exist. There is a reason we all emigrated from Nigeria... I’d like to not end up in Nigeria a second time.

Visa Denied 8/11/2019.
I am still trying to get over it.
Consulate Office Abuja.
Appointment time : 8:00am

I arrived at the embassy 5:00am. I was the only one so I stayed with the Mopol.
Fast forward to some minutes pass 7. We started accreditation.
I was 1 to 13 people that were interviewed, was in a high spirit, smiling all through. Then I was called in, have forgotten the window number.
Vo: Elderly frowning white lady in her late 40s
Me: Good morning
Vo: ignored. Pass your passport. Where are you going to?
Me: **** conference
Vo: Have you traveled out before?
Me: No.
Vo: Sorry you are not eligible. Handing over my passport and blue paper
Me: I have something to say.
Vo: I don't wanna hear it. Next person.

My interview was approximately 4 seconds. It was like a shock as I felt like an infidel the way she asked me to leave, her treatment was so bad as if I was an outcast. She never looked at me. At least she should have allowed me to talk. Meanwhile she denied everyone she interviewed before me.

But I give God all the Glory at least I have experienced it.
Before you “give God all the glory”, is it true that you were indeed going for a legitimate conference?

Proof of funds yes for cost of living not cost of serious health care need like a pregnancy and a delivery.
“In general, you must demonstrate that you are not likely to become a public charge. This means you must show that you will be able to financially support yourself as a lawful permanent resident living indefinitely in the United States.”

That is the language used in the instructions manual when filling the i-485. Public charge includes using Medicaid for pregnancy and delivery.

He just told you that his insurance will kick in 30 days so of course even if his wife is covered she won’t have insurance and is probably already close to her due date. Even with insurance one can still get Medicaid if the income does not balance out with the number of dependents. Please stop making assumptions and making people uncomfortable.
I’m sure it’s uncomfortable to you because most are not familiar with a life that does not involve shortcuts and cheating the system. If everyone tried to undercut the system like him, do you think he’d have Medicaid available to him like in Nigeria? Does he take the rest of us who pay co-pays and deductibles for our spouses for fools?

He is free to pay out of pocket for his wife’s medical care until his insurance kicks in. Why is that not a viable option? Medicaid is created specifically for those who genuinely have nothing, the disabled etc. not for those trying to do an end run around the system. He’s paid zero taxes into the system, why does he feel entitled to take from it?

Thankfully using public funds shortly after getting a green card is now part of the questions he will be asked at his naturalization interview. I hope he doesn’t have regrets then. Good luck.

Why is your wife not covered under your insurance plan? Are you trying to avoid co-pays and deductibles? More likely she will be denied Medicaid.

This is not a case of adjustment of status from my understanding. He relocated with PERM status directly from Nigeria. If he is not employed he has the legal right to seek assistance for his pregnant wife since he just moved and would have no source of income for the first few months. Also i think his case is different as the funds you would need to show is cost of living not necessarily for serious medical expenses like a pregnancy.

Although i have never heard of anyone who moved to the US with a green card except family sponsorship (one member of the family is already based here and working and would have insurance) or green card lottery.

I really am not sure how medicaid works but i believe it would apply to him since pregnancy and those above 65 are considered first.
Regardless of how he relocated, he must have filed an I-485 form. That form requires the applicant to show proof of funds, either in form of a job or sponsorship.
