Foreign AffairsRe: Saudi Implements Electronic Tracking-System For Women by Vincent41(m): 2:44pm On Nov 26, 2012
Laila Ikeji: Saudi Arabia has implemented an electronic tracking system to monitor women and inform their husbands if they leave the country.
According to an Agence France-Press story, a new system implemented last week sends Saudi husbands text messages from the Saudi immigration agency when their wives are flying out of King Khaled International Airport, near Riyahd.

And this system is operational for all dependents (children, women, and foreign workers).

Saudi Arabia, which ranked second worst in a Thomson Reuters global survey on women’s rights in mid 2012, is a notoriously repressive country.
•Women are not allowed to leave the country without signed permission from their husbands.
•Women are banned from driving,
•required to have a male guardian,
•just received the right to vote in municipal elections last year,
•and must cover most of their bodies, traditionally with a burqa or niqab.

PhonesRe: Have You Noticed Mtn Overcharging For Calls? by Vincent41(m): 2:51am On Nov 26, 2012
Jay-Kid:
I use the MTN Family and Friends package (as a matter of fact its the only reason i still use an MTN sim)because of the low tariff it offers for calls made to your 10 registered family and friend numbers. But recently i observed unexplained depreciation anytime i load airtime and as i never bothered to cross check how much i am charged after every calls i felt i might be indirectly using it up without knowing. Curiosity got the better part of me when today i decided to confirm how much i was been charged. I first made a call which lasted 61secs and was surprised when i discovered i was charged #18.30 (which amounts to 30k/sec) huh huh huh. I then made a subsequent call which lasted 18secs just to verify and this time i was charged #2.70 (which amounts to 15k/sec). huh huh huh
Now from MTN condition for that plan it states that "With MTN Family & Friends, you can register up to TEN (10) numbers as your Family and Friends numbers and enjoy 10kobo/second when you call any of these TEN numbers, from the very first second." And the MTN number i called was one of my registered FAF number so is this MTN's new way of extortion?
Have anyone had the same experience?

obynocj: For men who think they can stand up to face any woman, meeting Yao Defen might have them giving this idea a second thought.
Yao Defen was born on July 15th, 1972 in China. She is 7'8" tall and weighs 440 pounds. He massive size is due to a tumor which was on her pituitary glad but was removed to halt her growing.

Her growth started very early. At six years of age, she was already eating three times the normal amount of food compared to other children in her village. By elven year old, she was already over six feet tall. By fifteen, she was six feet and nine inches in height.

At fifteen, she saw a doctor to see if he could figure out what was causing her abnormal growth. She saw several doctors before they were finally able to diagnose the cause, however, her family was unable to do anything about it because the surgery would cost 4000 yuan ($640 USD), which they did not have.

PoliticsRe: How Telephone Glitch Frustrated Obama's Move To Reach Jonathan by Vincent41(m): 4:08pm On Nov 25, 2012
Siga: BOTH Presidents Barack Obama and Goodluck Jonathan wanted to talk on phone, but twice calls from the White House to Aso Rock failed to make the connection.

Authoritative sources confirmed during the week that efforts by President Obama to personally speak with Jonathan to return his congratulatory message has been aborted at least twice by the failure of the telephone system in Aso Rock.

After Obama' s second-term election victory three weeks ago, President Jonathan was among the first world leaders to congratulate him, offering him a hand of fellowship.

In response to the congratulatory messages, Obama on the Thursday of the same election week, started calling back some of the world leaders, who had congratulated him, to appreciate their letters and words of felicitation.

At least, three White House press statements by Press Secretary, Jay Carney, since the week of the election, have listed names of leaders Obama has been able to speak to in return for their congratulatory messages. Based on those statements made available to The Guardian, the US President has not been able to reach out to the Nigerian president.

But US sources confirmed that President Jonathan is one of those Obama was personally keen on talking to, in acknowledgement of their early congratulatory messages.

Specifically, on Monday November 12, according to US sources, White House officials, having coordinated with the US Embassy in Nigeria, and the Nigerian Embassy in the US, got a number to call Aso Rock, but, on two occasions on that day, both calls were simply not picked up, causing a diplomatic embarrassment for Aso Rock. The number had been given by Aso Rock officials to enable President Obama reach President Jonathan.

A source explained that what should have been done, as is normal in diplomatic etiquette, is for the Nigerian President to have a hotline to reach leaders of other countries that are strategic to the country, so that such important calls are easily facilitated.

Sources close to the Nigerian Foreign Affairs Ministry confirmed the practice and put the blame squarely on Aso Rock telephone system and some of its operators and officials.

Nigeria's Ambassador to the US, Prof Adebowale Adefuye, confirmed that the US President wants to talk to Jonathan since after the election, but stated that it is yet to happen.

But he quickly added that the plans were still being worked out to make it a reality. He explained further that during this past week, President Obama was away in Asia and then returned for the Thanksgiving celebrations, a big holiday, which Americans mark every third Thursday in November. In most cases in the US, the holiday starts on the preceding Wednesday (November 21) until the following week, which is Monday, November 26.

CrimeRe: Policeman Molests Woman In Presence Of Baby by Vincent41(m): 4:18pm On Nov 24, 2012
gramci: A police corporal with the Imo State Command is currently in trouble for raping a nursing mother, who had gone to the station to seek refuge.
Saturday Sun gathered that Mrs.Maureen Anyalebechi, from Umukabi Autonomous Community, in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area, Imo State, had, on November 10, 2012, gone to Umuguma Police Station to pass the night, when she could not locate the residence of her brother in the World Bank area of Owerri West Local Government Area.

Owing to the fact that it was latein the night, Mrs. Anyalebechi went to the police station with her seven-month-old baby, where she met Corporal ChigozieOdenigbo and another female police officer.
The victim told Saturday Sun: “When I discovered that it was late to continue searching for my brother’s place, I decided to go to the nearby police station, to beg them to accommodate mefor the night because it was already late.

“As I went in there with my baby, I met two police officers, a lady and a young man, and afterexplaining my situation, the male officer asked me to follow him to one officer’s house, where he claimed mosquitoes would not bite my baby and I thanked him and followed him innocently, but to my greatest surprise, the policeman pouncedon me. He hit me from behind and before I knew what was happening, he snatched my baby from me and flung him away. He was holding me by the throat to stop me from shouting for help and started raping me.”

She revealed that after the police officer had satisfied himself, he helped her to her feet and also picked up her babyand took her back to the police station. Mrs. Anyalebechi further narrated that when they came back to the police station, the female officer was alarmed when she saw that her clothes were torn and asked Corporal Odenigbo to explain what happened to her. The corporal, she said, denied ever doing anything to her.

Mrs. Anyalebechi said that she had to report the matter to the Divisional Police Officer, when hearrived for duty in the morning, who promptly ordered the arrestand detention of Corporal Odenigbo. She told Saturday Sunthat to her surprise, the policeman was released. Sensingthat the police wanted to cover up the crime, she had to contact a lawyer, who took her to the Imo State Police Commissioner, Bolanta

Adisa, last Friday, who summoned the DPO of Umuguma Police Station.
Saturday Sun learnt that upon the confirmation of the rape assault on the nursing mother, CP Bolanta ordered the arrest of Corporal Odenigbo, promising that thorough investigation would be carried out.

He said that if found culpable, the policeman will be prosecutedand dismissed from the Force.
Meanwhile, the police spokesman, Mr. Vitalis Onugu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said that Corporal Odenigbo will face administrative trial.
Saturday Sun also learnt that Corporal Odenigbo was alleged to have sexually assaulted a female officer some months back.

puskin: Is MTN the most hated network??

Yes....a very controversial topic.
I raised this because I've noticed that, anything MTN does......be it promo, CSR etc always comes with bashing and public hate from especially here...NL.

MTN has network problem for a few hours.....problem, your credit N2.33 grin mysteriously disappears......arrrrrrhhh....MTN don start their wayo. MTN does this......MTN does that......puhleeeeaze...as if it doesn't happen on other networks.
MTN's own is just escalated to the point of no return.

People have forgotten so soon that MTN have been running promos since June non-stop till they were halted by NCC. Now people will soon argue that they were trying to redeem their battered image and also trying to win back their old customers who are drifting to other networks.
People must drift......whether you like it or not.
Some other will say all their promo na lie-lie......now lemme ask, which network or organisation no dey lie?? FBI, SSS, FG, EFCC, Judiciary....they all lie. SO MTN lies......kini big deal?? mscheeeeeeew.
Nigerians don't like to read T&Cs before entering into any contract. They just assume that whatever it may be....it will favour them.(ludicrous)

Many people claim to have abandoned/discarded their MTN SIM thereby having nothing to do with the network(call and data), so where all these gigantic balance sheets/profits that MTN keep posting on a daily basis.....abi na spirits dey use their network?? undecided undecided

Anyone who says that he doesn't have an MTN SIM....hmmmm.......I seriously doubt the sincerity of that person.
Now....open your phone contact list.......scroll through it and if you say that your contact list doesn't contain @least 60% MTN numbers.......then your fone is seriously mal-functioning.

Now the recent one I found so amusing, MTN recently came out with improved data plans.....was posted here on NL.....the thread made frontpage the moment it came out and in less than 8hours....the thread had reached 6pages.

Now GLO came out with theirs....it made frontpage.....and after over a day of being on frontpage.......it has barely reached 2pages on the thread.

Etisalat came out with their BB 20k call plan to all networks.....it made frontpage then......it barely reached 3pages.

Airtel with their BB 1GB plan that can be tethered to a PC, as popular as it is still can't surpass the 3page mark when it was on NL frontpage.

Now, what I can't understand is....why must almost everybody continue to hate on MTN.
Is it their fault that they are ahead of the game.

I even have on good authority that MTN leases their bandwidth to some other networks.....now I wouldn't want to mention names, make I no spoil other network biz.

So my advice to all the MTN haterz.....quit the hating and embrace them. They will only get better.

One thing I do know for sure is that for MTN to be able to continuously draw all these criticisms to themselves shows that they just might be doing something right.

PoliticsRe: Bauchi Governor Dismisses Civil Servant Over Facebook Post On Corruption by Vincent41(m): 8:38am On Nov 22, 2012
Ptimes: A civil servant in Bauchi State who made a facebook post questioning the financial integrity of the State Governor has been dismissed.

Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi State ordered the dismissal of Abbas Faggo over a facebook comment in which he accused the governor of corruption.

A letter terminating Mr. Faggo’s appointment and signed by one Ibrahim Shehu for the Head of Service of the State, said his appointment was terminated “because his services are no longer needed”.

The termination of the appointment took effect from October 10 this year when he was first suspended.

Mr. Faggo’s troubles started when he accused the governor of monumental fraud and corruption, questioning the source of funding of the governor’s son’s wedding which took place recently.

Mr. Faggo had been arraigned by the Police before the Chief Magistrate of the state for the same offence.

However, the Chief Magistrate, Adamu Madaki, on Friday November 16, struck out the case against Mr. Faggo because “it was not properly filed.”

Below is the content of Mr. Faggo’s dismissal letter:

TERMINATION OF APPOINTMENT

I am directed to refer to the civil service commission’s letter No.

CSC/PRO/S/001/T.V dated 1st November 2012 to convey the commission’s

approval of your suspension and termination of appointment from Bauchi State

Service with effect from 10th October, 2012 as your service is no longer

required, please.

Signed

ibrahim shehu

For: Head of Service.

Below is the controversial Facebook post which angered the governor, and for which Mr. Faggo was arrested, detained and arraigned in court for allegedly defaming the Mr. Yuguda’s character.

“Those of us resident in Abuja, are witnessing yet another Bauchi wedding, this time we understand is the Governor’s son that is hooking the one-time PDP’s Chairmanship aspirant’s daughter. Inside sources said, already:

“Top officials of the Min. for Local Govt, along with the ALGON Bauchi State chapter are asking the 20 LGA’s to sign out N2m each as donation for the wedding next Saturday of the Gov’s son. They awarded contract for calendars and note pads to an Abuja printing press. Contract for coffee mugs, Wall clocks, bags, badges etc. was given to a Lagos based lady. They will all carry the pictures of the groom and the bride. An SUV Jeep was also suggested as a wedding present to Ango. Finally the 20 LGA chairmen will all send their wives to Abj where the jamboree is taking place because Yuguda is now Abuja based.

“The story is all over town too, that in April $80,000 was sent to the ango on his graduation by the SSG, on the orders of the Gov. This is as a result of request by the groom to buy a limited edition M/Benz Series.

“In Nov, 2009, when the Gov latest wife, also acquired thru Bauchi funds, was having her first child in Washington DC the sum of £150,000 was sent to the SSG by the then Accountant General for onward transmission to Yuguda. One wonders, why all this, as he has 21 kids from 3 wives earlier and all of them born in Nigeria. The thinking is that he is using Bauchi state money for the purchase of citizenship thru birth, for his latest 2 kids in the USA. Already a house has since been purchased for Yuguda in Maryland through a once upon a time VOA staff, aide of his.

“These things are happening in a state where staff salaries are becoming very difficult to pay and inevitable retrenchment is looming day in day out. God save Bauchi State.”

airmark: Chelsea Football Club has parted company this morning with Manager Roberto Di Matteo.

The team's recent performances and results have not been good enough and the owner and the Board felt that a change was necessary now to keep the club moving in the right direction as we head into a vitally important part of the season.

The club faces a difficult task ahead in qualifying for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League as well as maintaining a strong challenge for the top of the Premier League while competing in three other cup competitions. Our aim is to remain as competitive as possible and challenge strongly on all fronts.

The owner and the Board would like to thank Roberto for all he has done for the club since taking over in March. Roberto helped guide us to an historic Champions League victory and a seventh FA Cup. We will never forget the huge contribution he has made to this club's history and he will always be welcome at Stamford Bridge.

PhonesRe: Mtn's New Mobile TV Service Turns Your Blackberry To TV by Vincent41(m): 7:19pm On Nov 19, 2012
Tokotaya: MTN launches Mobile TV on data enabled phones

Customers of Nigeria’s Leading Information and Communications Technology (ICT) company, MTN, will soon be able to watch live TV on their data-enabled handsets, as the company rolls out its new Mobile TV service.

MTN Mobile TV service offers live streaming of TV content and ‘made for mobile’ video to data-enabled handsets such as Blackberry, iPhone and Samsung Galaxy range of phones, as well as tablets, such as iPad and Galaxy Tab, among others.

Although a type of mobile TV service was pioneered by MTN in 2007, it was on the Digital Video Broadcasting for Handheld (DVB-H) platform, which requires customers to purchase special handsets to enjoy the service.

However, for the first time in Nigeria, any data-enabled phone or device can watch television programmes and related content from up to twenty TV channels on his phone via MTN Mobile TV service.

“All our customers need to do to enjoy this service is to activate the WAP browser on their mobile handsets and devices; they can either access MTN Mobile TV packages via the MTN Play Portal, or by typing in the address of the Mobile TV portal www.mtnonline.com/imoovtv and they are good to go,” said Mr. Larry Annetts, Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer, MTN Nigeria.

He said that customers can also send a short message service (SMS) with the keyword “Mobile TV” to a short code and they will be sent the link to the Mobile TV portal.

Mr. Annetts explained that there would be three bouquets to choose from, depending on a customer’s budget and it would be possible to subscribe to one or more Mobile TV bouquets. Speaking further, he explained that each bouquet comprises a selection of TV channels providing a variety of content ranging from news to sport and entertainment, among others.

A distinct advantage of the service is that customers will be able to select the channels of their choice from a bouquet of channels provided, he added.

Mr. Annetts stated that MTN Mobile TV service is already active on the MTN network and will be available commercially to customers shortly.

PoliticsRe: What Did You Learn From The Presidential Media Chat? by Vincent41(m): 1:23pm On Nov 19, 2012
omicron: Finally the almighty presidential media chat has come and gone. So what have you learnt from the chat?

For me the panel of journalist no try at all, with respect to the lady. One was even asking the president how he feels that PDP didn't win elections in Edo and Ondo. Crap! How will that affect the price of garri? Not even one of them asked a question starting with 'how'! Pls help me ask jona why roads awarded in Nigeria more than 7 yrs ago is yet to be completed?? Jonathan was always right when he told them thay should be the one telling him some things, like what happened to the licenses given to some people for refining petroleum. They can do better.

Secondly, the whole stuff was like a beer parlour discussion. No discreet points made. No evaluation of targets previously set. No statistical facts and projections. Just the same routine, verbose and vauge responses to every question asked.

Thirdly, one thing is clear - Fuel Subsidy will not be removed totally, not soon. But expect no much positive changes until subsidy completely goes.

Fourth, it's mostly same old story. About security, cost of governance, education, 2nd tenure, Electricity, corruption, etc. Practically same old stories.

Or did you learn anything different? Let's hear it...
Ask dat kind question .......Na for house dem go bring ur resgination letter for u to sign

Sincere 9gerian: In view of the upcoming Presidential media chat, I call on RESPONSIBLE and PATRIOTIC Nigerians to post the questions that bother them most on this thread. I plead that we should ask thought provoking and HARD questions that will help the leaders of this great country, including our dear President, move this country forward. Let our questions lead to chains of events that will add to our GDP

CrimeRe: Lagos Couple Arrested For Kidnapping by Vincent41(m): 10:54am On Nov 17, 2012
erinolu: The annoying thing is that;

1. The man was not jobbless. He had something going, i just wonder which kind long throat will not keep people heads down. Success and upliftment comes with time, patience and hardwork
2. The Lawyer who helped to grant this man bail (after collecting 500,000) also had a job, another level of long throat

Do we say its jobblessness that makes people go into crime...Mbaa, nooo , most at times its long throat, o ju kokoro

It might be harsh, but will certainly be a deterrant if what the North is asking for CAPITAL PUNISHMENT for CORRUPTION comes to into play
lol....chairman its like I BU ONYE IGBO.....ride on
PoliticsRe: Shouldn't Every Nigerian Be Entitled To A Monthly Allowance? by Vincent41(m): 10:45am On Nov 17, 2012
ebankole: One thing i meditate on a daily basis is'HOW DO WE STOP POVERTY and REDUCE CRIME?

1-As a nigerian every citizen should be entitle to a monthly allowance ofcos out OIL money.

2 Education should be make compulsory out of this benefit.

3-Every Gov'ts at all level shuld be made to sign A performance agreement, and if fail shuld be expurge.

Any caught embezling our money shud be excuted.

Wat's ur say.?
it can never hapen in Naija even if God comes down from heaven....Hate dis country
