Frankdamaxx:^^^ I used 20w 50 oil for 6 to 8 years on my vehicles - both used and new vehicles. Brands of choice were Mobil XHP and Castrol GTX (both API SL). I used them based on very clear instructions in the owners manual. As you are well aware, there is a big debate on here about how these instructions from the manufacturer are utter nonsense. More on that later. I used the 20w 50, SL grade oil without problems for almost a decade, servicing at 5000km intervals. Apart from a harsh smell (of burnt oil?) on opening the oil filler cap (and sometimes even without opening the cap) there were no incidents. No oil shortages (except for 1 vehicle), nothing. However, after reading through the various oil war threads on here, I decided to try another viscosity early last year since the engines were still relatively low mileage. By the way, at least one of my vehicles was classed as 'inferior' by the 'expert' on the other oil thread because there are no instructions (about oil grade and viscosity) on the oil filler cap. Anyway, I went for 5w 30 which seemed to be the most suitable choice (but only locally available (at least then) as an expensive 'fully synthetic' oil from Mobil). What I can report is that fuel economy improved dramatically after I started using the local Mobil 1. I saw fuel economy figures I hadn't seen since 2009! (11.9 litres per 100km compared to 15+ litres per 100km pre-Mobil 1 use). I will continue using 5w 30 oils because of the persuasive argument made by some former members of this forum on yet another oil war thread. But in the end, each owner has to make the call - what works for motorist A may not work for motorist B. Almost all auto forums on the web have a majority of members saying 20w 50 oil is not suitable for modern engines. But some car manufacturers approve the use of this viscosity in cars made as recently as 2012 and sold new here! Some of our resident experts on the other thread then counter by claiming the cars sold here are not up to spec So who is to be believed - a faceless online 'guru' or the car maker? Or is it a question of picking and choosing what and when to believe in the owners manual? ![]() In the end its a judgement call. |

sooperrescue:^^^^ Not sure where all this is going and so this'll be my last post on this matter. It is no secret that regulation is poor here. Consumers here are just trying to do the best they can in very trying circumstances. If you notice, I inserted several qualifiers in my previous posts about how I (and countless other consumers no doubt) am assuming that the labeling on oil sold here isn't a giant fraud. If it is found to be so eventually, then we all know what to do. If it isn't we all also know what to do. While I am not in any way holding a brief for Forte oil or Oando (or any oil major/marketer for that matter), I can't help but notice that the Netherlands and Italy are founding members of the EU. There is no contradiction there. The EU is an economic and political bloc but it is made up of individual countries. Make of that what you will. |
sooperrescue:^^^^ ![]() Not sure what you mean in some parts of your post but I'll take your points one by one... You guess I was given the answer to the oil issue on the thread I referenced. Not at all. On that thread, some fellow who obviously didn't read the stuff I pasted was asking me if I had read my owners manual and I didn't even bother to reply him. The issues are clearly stated there -in black and white from a Toyota vehicle owners manual. It is left to readers to come to a conclusion. To answer your query about ACEA sequences - the labeling on the Castrol Magnatec I purchased is "ACEA A1/B1, A5/B5". I am very much aware that A1/B1 has been removed from the most recent ACEA oil sequences. To the best of my knowledge, A5/B5 is still in force. Only Eterna will be able to answer why they have both A1/B1 and A5/B5 on the label. On your other inquiry about any SN oil being ILSAC 4 - so far my checks online haven't revealed any other apart from the Castrol. On your question "where is EU?", I am not sure what you mean... |
sooperrescue:^^^^ I uploaded a scan of the Camry manual on this thread a while ago: https://www.nairaland.com/4141005/need-type-mobile-oil-use#61921442 On this thread I have made just a couple of observations: 1. If indeed the labeling on Eterna's Castrol Magnatec is true, then it is adequate for my needs. It also meets A1/B1, A5/B5 standards. 2. As my uploaded scan will confirm, Toyota still allows the use of 20W/50 oil in its cars sold as recently as 2011/2012 . Whether they are right to do so is another argument entirely - if Toyota dealers and distributors here in Nigeria choose to sell cars of a spec different from US spec, there isn't much consumers can do is there? |
sooperrescue:^^^^ Interesting. Have you considered the Castrol oil sold here by Eterna may/may not have anything to do with the US market? It is also very possible for an oil to be rated SN and ILSAC 4 and yet another could be SN and ILSAC 5. The rating systems are independent. The same oil I bought has a good ACEA rating but I don't have the oil at hand to give the specifics. (I am assuming here that the labeling is not misleading/fraudulent in any way). That Toyota "placed 20W 50 as the last in a worst case scenario" is news to me. The Camry I mentioned earlier was bought new here in 2012. The owners manual clearly states on page 590 that several oil viscosity ratings are permitted and they are listed in no particular order. On the same page, owners are told that oils with viscosities of 15W/40 and 20W/50 may be used as long as they are of API SL or SM grade. The manual only recommends the use of 5W/30 oil in extremely low temperatures (and of course that doesn't apply to us here in Nigeria). The same manual also recommends the use of "ILSAC multigrade oil" but no mention is made of the ILSAC rating allowable. ![]() A lot of unclear stuff there... |
sooperrescue:^^^^ The (5W 30) Magnatec sold by Eterna is rated SN & ILSAC 4. I bought yesterday. The label says the oil is made in the EU and is 'full synthetic'. The meaning of 'full synthetic' varies considerably and is the subject of many heated debates so I won't go into that now. If the API rating on this oil is indeed genuine then it should be adequate for my use. Not all Camrys insist on 5W 20 or 0W 20 oils. Believe it or not, 2012 Camrys sold here actually permit the use of 20W 50 oils among others. |
dru23:^^^^ Any difference between your stuff and the stuff sold by eterna in Nigeria? Things like API, ILSAC ratings? |
OP, What are the prices for front and rear brake pads for 2011 and 2012 Toyota Camry 2.5L (2AR FE)? |
ItsMeAboki:^^^^ ![]() Reading through your posts on this thread, I agree with Mr. Adesina for once. You know exactly what you wrote in your first post. Its up there for all to see. You made a spurious claim and were called out on it. Nothing more for me to add. |
Organs:^^^^ You sir, are trolling and you are not doing a very good job of it... |
ItsMeAboki:^^^^ No sir. That's not how sensible armies do it. If people committed a crime, you investigate and find out those responsible. It is unlikely that all the indigent women and children whose homes were burnt down by these soldiers knew anything about the alleged killing of a Nigerian soldier. Face it. Your army is an occupation force, pure and simple. |
sureteeboy:^^^^ OP, I am assuming that all you have posted online about the attack on this and other threads is true. Believe it or not, some dark forces will be enraged that you have chosen to boldly state the facts about the lawlessness and impunity of our so called armed forces. Take note. |
bakaredc:^^^^ No sir. You don't get to slate politicians and give the army a pass. You say you won't buy into the story that the military will cause such havoc. Well, the truth is that the Nigerian army has been doing this sort of thing for years. Perhaps you know this. Perhaps you don't. Nigerian soldiers went to the Lagos home of a popular musician in the late 70s, burnt the place down and killed some of the people they met there. The official explanation by the then military government was that 'unknown soldiers' were responsible. What was the reason? The reason for the military invasion was that Fela Kuti had made a couple of songs critical of the then Obasanjo regime. Song writing was Fela Kuti's "crime" and some people in his home paid with their lives for this. ![]() Nearly 30 years after the episode at Fela Kuti's home, Nigerian soldiers sacked entire towns and communities in Odi (1999) and Zaki Biam (2001) (again under the same Obasanjo ) following the alleged killing of soldiers on official duty. No investigation. No due process. Nothing. The army just went in and destroyed these towns, killed people and raped several women. There have been scores of similar incidents like these over the years. So you sir, can't just come on here and claim that the Nigerian army "didn't do it". They have done it before. Several times. The sad thing is they will do it again. And again. |
SoapQueen:^^^ ![]() Pardon my butting in but did you and that fellow have some old scores to settle? All I can see from your post is friendly teasing of your course mate and good natured fun. I don't understand the anger in that fellow's comments. ![]() |

Mr Alo has done well. More power to him and others like him who are testing our legal system and exposing the thinking of "judges" like Mr. Akintoroye. Why has it taken this long? It has taken so long because the rest of us leave the hard work to the Martins Alos of this world. Some people here are upset because the hypocrisy of their idol (former lagos governor) is being laid bare. It is strange how a court ruling that makes for more open government across the board is offensive to these people. Hypocrites. |

mayor2013:^^^ +1 Good advice. I suspected it was 4wd when I saw the front skirts? but I wasn't sure. |
![]() I thought it was only old school Citroens with hydropneumatic suspension that could do this 'riding on 3 tyres' thing. Or does this SEAT have the same kind of suspension? |
OP has probably sorted himself out since. ![]() The funny noises he was hearing may have come from other parts. I had to perform a complete suspension overhaul on a 2008 model toyota RAV4 in December 2016 and it was a nightmare Had to change:Lower control arm bushings (front and rear) Stabilizer linkage (front) Ball joints Outer tie rod ends Struts Strut mounts Rear shock absorbers. Even after changing all these parts, the funny noises persisted. I also had to change the brake calipers (front and rear) and front disks because the ones on the car were shot to pieces and could not be 'managed' any further. And yet the funny noises wouldn't go away. While trying to check on the inner tie rods, mechanic stripped the steering rack and found out the steering rack had died a long time ago - the lubricant/grease had long dried out and the boots had let in water and rusted out the rack. It then made perfect sense - I had been trying to track a major suspension noise for years and the dead steering rack was the offender. Got a new steering rack and yet noises still wouldn't go away. ![]() While tracking these noise-making spirits that refused to be exorcised, we then found out that some engine mounts were bad. These were replaced. We also found out by accident that the CV joint boots had also let in a lot of water/mud over the years and the CV joint grease had turned into some kind of 'emulsion'. Mechanic cleaned out the joints, put in fresh grease and replaced the boot clips/retainers. But even after all this, the noises remained. By now, both mechanic and customer were very tired. Mechanic then decided to do a complete check and re-tightening of all nuts and bolts on suspension parts, engine bay area and the body/chassis. It took time but the noisemakers were finally, finally expelled! Our roads are something else. One year of normal road use of a car in Nigeria is equal to 15 years hard road labour in some other countries. ![]() Unfortunately, in a space of 8 months, the new steering rack, stabilizer linkages, ball joints and outer tie rod ends were all shot. But that's a story for another day. |
kyutepanda:^^^ I have counted about 30 casualties from online photos of this slaughter. And more photos and videos are still coming in.The death toll could be closer to 40 than you think. Perhaps exceeding it even. ![]() Very sad. ![]() |
TourismMan:^^^^ ![]() I have counted close to 30 casualties from photos online. 47 may not be an exaggeration as you think. |
The PDP treated voters with utter contempt and eventually paid the price. The APC is doing the same thing. In some respects it is even worse. What remains to be seen is what the people will say in the next election. I would expect sentient beings to ditch these two bad sides of the same coin and explore other uncontaminated alternatives. But then again we are not known for sensible, rational choices. Time will tell... |
