hrykanu231: I experienced this first hand during my M.Sc oral interview in 2013. The names they called my previous school was disheartening, primarily because it was a state school in an area comsiderd academically less developed. They pushed the narrative further by telling me that, my 2:1will be a very low 2:2 if I had my first degree in their school.
Well, when the interview began, they didn't know when they started clapping. In the end, the guy who had his B.Sc in "wawa" state, had the highest score(82%) and topped his M.Sc class. That's interesting |

I went through hell back in school. I suffered that my friends and some of my course mates had to shuffle food for me at times
I couldn't even afford getting accommodation off campus nor school hostel. I squatted with a family friend who barely feed on it's own. I'm indepted to this family though for providing me accommodation. They gave me roof over my head. I was top of the class despite my condition. I also make sure my close friends all graduated with 2.1.
It was during my studentship i knew i can't joined the bandwagon and indulged in cyber crime. I had course mates who are living large and bailing as Yahoo guys. They literally told me to come live with them and forget I've once starved before.
They owned their ride and live comfortably. They literally live a gigantic lifestyles. Nonetheless, I never give in. Despite the pressure, I never for once imagined myself in their shoes. They'd invite me to their house during exam period to help them with tutorials, but i don't usually honour their invitation. We only meet in school, do whatever we had to do and get dispersed afterwards.
I constantly love taking water to avoid having ulcer. I got discouraged, stressed out and overwhelmed in my final year. I had to work my ass off on menial jobs to pay tuition fees and project work. My Calabar neighbour back then also helped me with food, i was taking his son who's preparing to sit for UTME tutorials. I had the opportunity of using a smart phone ( android) in my final year, this was when my friend gave me hers having gotten a new one
I got relieved and happy when i left school, even though i knew deep down i was on my own. I need no soothsayers to tell me i had much more tougher days ahead. I was just glad living that building called school. Seriously school was hell on me. I did participated in some extracurricular activities, that doesn't make it interesting to me.
I'm out of school now, but no job. At times, I'd be wondering if i didn't made the wrong choice going to school at first. The noble pandemic (Covid) also came in when i graduated and disrupted everything. Seriously i just need a job to help myself and family. I wonder when someone would start living a normal life. This life is truly not fair to all. |

Did you see the news how Dangote will be given $19b loan ? That's how the rich get richer. Unemployment had skyrocket beyond imagination. Inflation is on the rise. Our currency is nothing to write home about. Insecurity here and there. Things are getting harder in the country. It takes God's grace for me to eat two square meals daily, and the meal itself isn't something special. I'm a fresh graduate, unemployed and broke (3 in 1) Tell me why wouldn't the electorate accept 2k and cups of rice to vote for any party? They would definitely go for the highest bidder. Someone who had nothing to eat has no choice. Though we are getting wiser now, but what can we do? Poverty is actually a weapon, by the government to get through the masses. Kaiser20: When I look at myself today I feel fulfilled in life. But when I see the younger Nigeria generations i weep, I pray for them everyday. (Over hustle too much) I promise God that I will continue to help in any little ways to lift as many youths as I can out of poverty. The resources and opportunities available for today's youths are limited, unless you have rich and connected parents That's just it. The rich and well connected parents makes life easier for their kids. I graduated top of the class 2019, no job nor business. I wanted to futher my education and perhaps becoming a licence surveyor. No money for that. The best bet for me is to get a job and run my masters and whataview concurrently. Yet no job. Those who had a job were underpaid. I'm just in a state of confusion. It's looks as if I'm just useless and got no plan nor ambitious for myself. No doubt, almost average Nigerians youths out there are going through the same thing. Some had long resorted to crime to pay their bills. At the long run, some will definitely join the bandwagon. The government ain't helping matters. No access to loan for business or education. You are just on your own. Now tell me, why won't they resort to crime when they had nothing doing. Their goals, plans all shattered just because they ain't from a rich home or connected. Imagine people buying slots to get a government job in our own father's land. My friend who served in LSDPC told me his boss categorically informed him not to over worked himself because they won't retain him after service. He asked why? The boss responded, you needed to know someone out there before you can be retained or get a job here. A bitter truth! Nonetheless, we're just being hopeful for a better tomorrow. |

SlyfoxxjReturns: Who says? Of course we socialized and I partied hard in my university days, in fact I don’t think Uni students of today party as much as we used to then. But we always maintained our focus and had much stronger principles at the end of the day. The shame and stigma of failing in school, getting pregnant before marriage or generally not doing well in life was so strong back then that it always kept us in check no matter how much we wanted to misbehave. Kids today no longer have that fear that’s why they busy doing drugs, getting knocked up and dropping out of school anyhow.
Also we didn’t have to deal with what I call the ultimate distraction of this generation - social media. Back then we had distractions but they were not as instant and “in your face” like it is today with smartphones and social media. I don’t see any mind stimulating thing on most of these platforms. It’s all sex and other forms of immorality 24/7. We expanded our minds back then by reading books, watching documentaries and other educational stuff to the extent that I am more articulate and knowledgeable than most kids currently in university that I speak with. Why is that? despite all the easy access to information they have with the internet today that we didn’t have. That just shows you all they do with these technologies is play and debase their minds with nonsense not learn.
Mind you I am just in my mid 30’s, not that old and I can already see the vast decline in the quality of youth we are producing today compared to my university days. Aptly said. We mis-used, and abused the opportunities having access to the internet. Their general slangs now is "school na scam." They indulged in all sorts of crimes and atrocities just to make money. Infact, some parents encourages their wards to go into crime. They laughed and make jest of some of us who ain't in support of such. They claimed we couldn't land a job despite our utmost performance in school. Yet, we bent on punishing ourselves since we ressolved never to join the bandwagon and live a fulfilling life according to them. The social media had done more harm than good no doubt. I was in a public bus last week, a man was telling his fellow passenger he doesn't had TV set in his house. The passenger responded why? The man claimed that TV you see, is one of the factors influencing today's generation astray. He claimed there's absolutely nothing good on it aside sports and cartoons. He claimed his kids would live with or without a TV set. Go to secondary school today, you hardly see students who doesn't indulged in boyfriend and girlfriend of a thing. Our tertiary institutions is nothing to write home about that. Our government also are not helping matters. Some TV programmes needs to be ban seriously. Less than 30% of this our generation stand firm. Drugs, cyber crime, sex, porn, bad dressing et al. God have mercy on us. |

You think these guys were saints back then, if you do then you've been fooled for real, and seriously need a rethink. You Can't compare the lifestyle of that generation to this present one, it's a two different thing. A young man was saying on national TV how Nigerians were doing pretty fine then. Naira is more sophisticated than the so called dollar. Graduates are being employed immediately after school with good pay. Apart from government jobs, different multinationals firm do come to pick them up. BRATISLAVA: Funny. I've met a man that didn't want to learn chess because he said it is hard. And not just him. Some men can't even handle elementary A-level mathematics.
What do we say to that? Can we conclude that men shouldn't be taken seriously?
The way some men conclude on some stereotypes is amazing. Is it that you didn't go to school with girls that you think they can't play chess? Or that you feel they can't just because they are girls? Or that the few you met that have interests other than chess are the standard?
Level the playing field, i.e. remove your stereotypes and unrealistic expectations, and see if females won't meet up if they aren't saddled with gender roles and stereotypes.
