Ayoola03: Hello guys! Good morning from Toronto. So sorry for the late response. I have been trying to settle since I arrived.I used Egypt air and their service was impressive. There is nothin to worry about at the POE as no big deal at all infact it wasn't like how people Painted it, I was expecting a more drilling exercise but unfortunately I was proved wrong by the generosity shown by the officer .the officers are all nice and friendly. I tendered my admission letters and the cic correspondence letter+passport and the questions goes thus :
What is the purpose of visit? Is this your first time in Canada? What is your undergraduate course? The duration of the course? Which school do you finished from and which city(when I told him lautech ogbomosho oyo state Nigeria, the pronunciation almost removed his tongue and he stated mocking me ) What graduate program are you going for The duration of the course What is the name of the school What is the source of funding (self or government) Jokes jokes jokes, the guy started making fun of me infact through out my chat with him, he only went true my funding letter he didn't bother to check my acceptance letter and the correspondence letter,he didn't give me the opportunity to answer the above questions he ended up answering those questions himself and never bother me at all, all I did was just to smile when he ask and immediately answer himself lol. Non of my luggage was checked everyone was able to collect their permit without stress and I wasn't even asked the amount of my PTA or if I came in with any . The experience was awesome and stress free . Free wifi is available at Pearson international airport so you can easily connect to speak with your loved ones at home. The weather here is still the same sunny weather in naija just that it changes in the evening/night but not too bad tho. All you need is courage and smile. Lastly, anyone coming tru MM airport after your luggage has been weighed should immediately padlock your box and make sure you didn't put any valuable tins in the pockets or other external spaces in your box. Although I locked the main place in my box but other sides that can't be locked I kept some few things in it and discovered like two zips where partially opened when I went to claim my bags at the final destination in Toronto, few things was stolen in my bag but I thank God it is not something that useful. They also ended up damaging my box as well, they turned my box from 4legged to 3legged box,all thanks to those guyz at MM airport , please be careful and take caution.I wish everyone all the best and it will surely end in praise. Sorry for the experience. I am a bit worried as to how you were able to conclude that the damage/theft took place at MM airport considering that you had transit in Cairo? Are you sure this is not feeding into a stereotype? Could it not have happened during transit in Cairo? |

akinolaolujide: Ur statements are from a laymans perspective iron are being used daily for construction in naija. Its a wrong notion for you to say that if you want iron form work it is available i dont really see the issue here most of the complains are available. We have people that specialises in scaffolding arrangment and formwork Bamboo is a cheaper alternative in construction. And bamboos are not bad examples we can talk of improving their usability not that they are totally it still takes us back to square one how industrialised are we. Instead of all these plenty grammer i expect someone of u guys to take it up as a business model to help correct it if u feel its such a big problem. Layman? I laugh. In your haste to post you show lack of understanding of the import of my post. To break it down for you, cost is the major driver of the construction practices. This cost is both the initial cost of tools and equipment and sometimes the running cost of maintaining them. Next is the infrastructure to support such construction practices. How many factories are available to properly cut and treat wood in the country? You use bamboo because it is 'cheaper'. Will Julius Berger do the same? NO. Will the 'usual' client in Nigeria pay for the use of iron scaffolds? How many people in Nigeria are even aware that there are certifications for scaffolders and riggers? Ideas must be adjusted to suit the environment where you operate. |

EgunMogaji: 1) The Chinese use bamboo even on some skyscrapers
2) Oga Spyder880 has used both adjustable steel and bamboo support for decking, maybe he can tutor us on his findings.
I think part of the issue, a big part, is the cheap labor. Exactly. 'CHEAP' is what is driving the construction practices you see. Now scaffolding will be cheaper if many people use it and you have good riggers and scaffolders to set it up. When you have clients who are doing construction as money comes, it comes difficult to properly project manage and benefit from the efficiency you get from mass production. |

Thanks for the insightful post. You however need to ask why the 'small' builders don't use such techniques. It is simplistic to think it is just because they are lazy like so many people opine to here. The first thing is standardisation. For you to go for prefab, you must have standard materials/dimensions. Wood in Nigeria are NOT in standard sizes. So the first step is to have wood 'factory' that produce standard sizes of wood of the right quality. You may want to invest in that if you are a Nigerian. Next thing is logistics of getting materials to sight in Nigeria. You need to check access roads to some site. You also have the cost for rigging and lifting. Lifting operations is one of the most hazardous work! Check out people working at height in Nigeria and see whether such will be acceptable in most parts of the world. I always use scaffolding as a good example. Why do we use bamboo as scaffolding instead of iron? Marilo: Allow me to come in here. We can argue this intelligently without ass-smacking (except in a friendly way).
1. Nothing is impossible and whatever is of value doesn't come cheaply (I know you'd agree with that).
2 The argument is not about the cost as you seem to be over flogging that. The argument is a better and improved way of doing things differently (No one says it doesn't cost nothing). If the standard is to be followed and we as a country wants to play in the league of advanced nation,we should be prepared to pay the price (and I bet you people will pay, Nigerians have been known to be like that. If you doubt me, ask people who are still building during recession if the money was manna from heaven literarily).
3. Improvement and advancement come with a cost especially in the short-run but in the long run, efficiency of processes will reduce cost and the economy is going to be the better for it.
4. For professionals who know their onions, they carve a niche and trust me, there will be patronage. If you doubt me, remove the toga of impossibility, improve on your trade/profession by imbibing the "white man's" approach and you'd thank me later. Never ever say "Are you ready to pay for it?" (I see that rhetoric in many of your posts and it's nauseating, change that perception!). You know why people are talking Skimanski? Why people are talking Aventures? Why people are talking ArchitectB? Segcymoore, Abdulwastecx, podosci, segzy14 and the likes? They do common things uncommonly. They can do better but they have carved a niche! They will continue to have patronage (God Bless them).
5. Tell me one innovative way (white man's approach) you choose to carry out your trade/profession (by displaying some of your work here) and I'd tell you that you'd have succeeded in carving out a niche. Your work will speak volume and your market share will amaze you.
6. Never ever let money be a guide for what you do. Money is only a PART but not the WHOLE. Be creative and innovative first, name your price and your market share will swell.
7. If you must succeed, the cost is secondary. No one says you should charge a cut-throat price to show off your work. People have done it before and you can do better. Trust me, customers/clients are not unintelligent not to know they need to pay more for a more creative and innovative way of doing things.
8. From the foregoing, people will pay for standardised, creative and innovative way of doing things the state of the economy notwithstanding. They may haggle, but because yours is different, they'd pay something extra. Other professionals will be forced to adopt your style because they want a part of your market share and in the end,the economy is better. Be daringly creative and innovative. It is not cheap,we know that already!
Do not limit yourself by impossibilities that you create in your mind, they are euphemeral - Marilo. |
Properties › Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by wanaj0: 6:20pm On Mar 28, 2017 |
There are reasons that makes it cheaper. Firstly, there are 'standards' of materials. Such we don't have in Nigeria especially with wood. They have invested a lot in machinery that help them to mass produced standard materials. Secondly, the infrastructure supports such construction practice. We have people building in places that delivery trucks cannot even reach. Is that where you will ask a crane to go to. Thirdly, things are handled by professionals with great attention to details. Before you start construction you do a 'constructability' review that help to understand how the construction will be done and the issues that will arise. Still remember the IPP being constructed in Nigeria where they forgot that the turbine floated on the barge cannot pass under the bridge! Imagine how many of such 'little' things you will experience in Nigeria. Will you pay for the relocation of PHCN poles/wires for the truck carrying the roof carcass to get access to your site. Now most equipment that are used on site use electrical power. Are you willing to provide uninterrupted power throughout the duration of your build with adequate lifting facilities? Ordinary steel scaffold we are not willing to provide hence the use of bamboo! InvertedHammer: What cost?
It is cheaper and makes for more accurate measurements.
The problem is that Nigerian builders lack ideas and innovation. One pattern/style comes up and everyone else copies. We continue doing things the way it was done in the 18th century. Most oyibo innovations are aimed at efficiency, reducing cost and saving time. That picture you saw is an evidence. The same wood, nails, tape and carpenter and subsequent transportation. Oh and the same wood lifting is involved to put them in place. Where is the added cost?
As I posted a long time ago, a Chinese developer built a skyscraper carcass in less than two weeks. Why? Because there are professionals working as a team. Give the same job to Nigerians, equip them with measuring tapes and they will still give a mediocre output. They'd rather have ten jobs running concurrently instead of concentrating on one and finishing it well. Sometimes you have to chase carpenters and plumbers around to complete a job you gave them. It has more to do with character, culture than cost. We are mentally and intellectually lazy. Without looking at the details, your mind already raced to money while erroneously assuming that it is more expensive. It is this defeatist attitude and fear of trying new ideas that make for stagnant development.
If in doubt, think about our refineries in this 21st century. / |

AngelicBeing: l understand, l hope he truly repents and turn a new leaf or else his source of income will crash permanently on Nairaland Problem is not repentance. It is people doing what they are not trained to do and refusing to get competent people to work with them to cover the deficiencies they have in skill, experience and competency. It is not particular to this guy. Brabus started as a computer/IT/Graphics designer. How did he become a builder overnight? Was there any training? Did he get competent people to cover his knowledge gap? There are many people like that. Those that move from selling tiles/sanitary wares to become builder. Those that move from doing DSTV/CCTV installation to become electrical contractors. Those that move from making windows/doors to becoming builders. It is right to follow your passion (Spyder did). There is however the need to acquire the necessary skill or competencies. Alternatively, employ those with such skills and competencies to work with you. Reality is that we have many 'quacks' masquerading as professionals and people get carried away with their 'packaging' or relatively 'cheap' quote. Professionals come at a premium. If you make decisions purely on 'price' you are likely to end up with quacks. That's why lowest bidder is not necessary the right person for the job. The other problem is that some people just lack integrity. They are money driven! Unfortunately it is difficult to discover such until they show their true colors. God help us! |

I will like to hear from people who have installed it in their home. Also the skills too to install it. I can ship it down easily to Nigeria with a car but do we have the trusted hand to cut and install them No issue with laminate use in Nigeria once you go for AC3 or AC4 and minimum of 8mm. Better in bedrooms though because sand in other high traffic areas. Installation of laminate is easy because of the locking system. You have sellers and installers in Nigeria. |

Once my house finishing finishes in few weeks, I intend building a duplex in Lagos and I've been thinking about this stairs thing but I rather not build at all if the only option available is this concrete stairs.
