Arizona Audit: Audit Contractor Says He "Recovered" Deleted Files
A contractor said he was able to recover data that the Senate’s election audit team previously accused Maricopa County of deleting, undermining a serious allegation the audit publicly lodged against county election officials.

During a hearing in the Senate on Tuesday afternoon, Ben Cotton, founder of the digital forensics company CyFIR, a subcontractor on Senate President Karen Fann’s audit team, said he recovered the files after properly configuring the hard drive where the data was stored.

“I’ve been able to recover all of those deleted files, and I have access to that data,” Cotton said.

Cotton’s explanation indicates that county officials were correct when they said no files had been deleted.

The audit’s official Twitter account explicitly claimed the county “deleted a directory full of election databases from the 2020 election cycle” shortly before turning over its ballot tabulation machines to the audit. To back up its claim, it posted a screenshot purporting to show a list of deleted files, all of which were shown as being modified on April 12, about a week and a half before the county delivered the machines to Veterans Memorial Coliseum, where the audit is being conducted.

In a response letter to Fann on Monday, the county Board of Supervisors said the elections department shut down the servers on that date, and that the “modified” date only indicates changes the software made to the files’ metadata, which it said was a routine occurrence. Cotton said the audit team didn’t turn on the machines after receiving them.

Rather than examine the machines themselves, the audit team made digital copies of the equipment. The third-party software CyFIR used to analyze those digital copies gave the appearance that files were missing or deleted because the files were not in their original place, the county speculated.

Nonetheless, Cotton repeatedly used the word “deleted,” as did Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Warren Petersen, who questioned audit team members with Fann at the hearing. After the hearing, Fann stood by Cotton’s assertion that the files had been deleted but he was able to recover them, though she said she wouldn’t refer the issue to the Attorney General’s Office or other law enforcement because “ we never said there was any wrongdoing. ”

If the auditors had simply asked the Maricopa County officials where the files were in the first place instead of going to press with "deleted files"conspiracy. All these distractions would have been avoided. But then Trump's cult members love conspiracy theories, it's the air that keeps them alive.

For you to claim something fraudulent, you need proof. Just shouting fraud fraud everyday does not make it true.

If truly someone deleted the files as alleged, that would be a criminal offense that would send all those involved to jail. Why has the Senate committee carrying out the audits not recommend criminal prosecution if truly the data was deleted. That would shame the election officials and give some credence to Republican allegations that something fraudulent was going on. You guys are just clutching hot air.

Hiw did the auditor not know where the data was on the hard drive and how did he recover the files. I forgot, he already told you but you refused to listen - he was told by Maricopa County officials.

You think if the auditors have to use specialized software and specialists to recover data from a hard drive, they would not say so. And besides, I have recovered data from a crashed hard drive before, it's an expensive and elaborated process, and you can never recover 100% of the data. You will be lucky if you recover 60%.

Maricopa County officials wrote a letter saying the auditors could not find the data because they don't know where to look. The very next day the auditor said they now have the information they need to recover the data, but Trump's worshippers are still shouting fraud and deleted data. Na wa o! The claim of deleted databases was amplified by former President Donald Trump and his supporters, who believe conspiracy theories about election irregularities.

At this point it is not really clear which one is the case. Hence I said we should move on from this and look forward to the result.

Maybe the files were not in the right directory at first, maybe the files were hidden but the auditors did not initially find the files when they looked at the database. They can make legitimate claim the files were deleted

Concluding files were deleted means something sinister or fraudulent is going on. Saying you can find the files just means you have not found them. They do not mean the same thing.

If the auditors did not initially find the files, why not ask the election officials for it before going to press and accusing them of deleting it? The cyberninja people are just desperate to prove election rigging.

The deleted database hoax has since been debunked even by the Republican auditors carrying out the audit. They said they have recovered the deleted files. What actually happened was that the election disc contained thousands of files and folders and the election auditors did not know where to look. Exactly what I was about to say. How come northern governors decided to start destroying bottles of alcohol of southerners without consulting with their southern counterparts. They did not even consult with the president. The northern governors are anti people as they did not have the interest of Nigerians at heart.
