franchasng:Abeg yarn me how many times the igbo tribe has fought or spoken out for the oppressed in Nigeria? How many igbo activists (save for Oby Ezekwesili, who is even disliked by her igbo kith and kins) has even put their lives on the line fighting for the oppressed? |
I am not excusing Nigerian governments for our pathetic homeless (and poverty) statistics, but BBC should have first expose the appalling homeless statistics in the UK. Like they say, why complain of a speck in someone else's eyes, when you have a log in your own One in 200 people now homeless in Britain as crisis deepens - By Matthew Robinson, CNN |
dometome:You must be too young to remember the political shenanigans following Yar' adua's death or you don't know how to Google. It was the Save Nigeria Group lead by Tunde Bakare, Wole Soyinka, Yinka Odumakim, Femi Falana among others that led nationwide protest to force the national assembly to declare vice president Jonathan acting president and subsequently president. Read more here - https://www.nairaland.com/1358187/still-wole-soyinka-flashback-2010-politics Furthermore Jonathan won all the Yoruba states in the 2011 presidential election except Osun state won by Ribadu.

Abbeybailey:As long as there are human beings on this planet, there will always be wars. As long as greed, avarice and power is part and parcel of human DNA, wars will always be fought. Wars shapped whatever country we live in, wars shaped all our developments and advancements. As we cannot prevents wars, we must learn to manage them, and it was management of wars that made the last 70 years the longest period of world peace (relatively ), in the history of mankind. It was pacifism that was responsible for the scale of WW2. It was this same pacifist stance of FDR that allowed Germany cause havoc on Europe. It was after the US was forced to join the war, that the war was brought to a quick end. Countries sometimes fight war abroad, to prevent the war being brought home. If the US, allows ISIS to take hold in Syria, one day the war will be brought to the doorstep of the US. Yes, the Iraqi second war was a senseless war, but you cannot use one error to justify another error. The circumstances are different. |
Is Trump under some very potent drug or he truly has dementia? On 19th of December he twitted; We have defeated ISIS in Syria , my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency. |
Abbeybailey:The US pulling out of Syria at this time could have serious security consequences for both Europe, the US and even Africa in the long run. The US was the stabilising factor apart from help keeping ISIS at bay, they are helping to keep the fighting forces apart, ie, Al-Bashir's forces, Iran and Russian forces, Turkish forces and even Israel forces from free for all fight and the region descending into anarchy. ISIS is wounded but not yet defeated, they could take advantage of the vacuum and chaos created by US withdrawal to regroup and state a come back. A strong ISIS would be able to plan attacks on Europe and the US, and also train and send fighters across the Sahara into Nigeria. |
If Atiku really believes Obi is the best leader Nigeria ever produced, did he nominate his for vice president? Should not Atiku have made sure Obi becomes President and he tutors under him. |
globemoney01:Is this a hand over note? It is either Peter Obi has no idea of what a handover note looks like or the person who faked this does not know. Maybe this is a summary of assets and liabilities of the state government as Obi was leaving government. There is no way the incoming government can make sense of this "hand over" note. It says nothing about where the assets are ie, banks, investments, physical assets, etc, it is even worse on liabilities, ie, internal debts, external debts, bonds, contractors owed, etc. |
judecares1:So you watched the video very well, what of senator Saraki and other over 400 members of the national assembly, who actually saw Buhari live? They did not see Buhari very well. You and your mentor Kanu have a serious case of grand delusion, feeling you are more intelligent than the entire human race. |
Here is a view that Tithing is not a Christian doctrine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRahv1Y4atU |
To me this is a more plausible explanation for the sometimes aloof behaviour and incommunicado stance of Buhari, rather than the stupid, insane and distractive jubril narrative. Why is it difficult for Buhari to grant an interview to local journalists, if he is allergic to a televised media chat? I am waiting to see if Buhari himself will campaign to solicit for votes, or others such as Amaechi, Tinubu, or Oshiomole will campaign on his behalf. |
To further add to above, US educational system at the primary and secondary levels are falling below other advanced nations, and if things are not improved, it will affect the country's development and ability to compete on the world state. This fear of international competition for jobs, business and trade is responsible for Brexit, Trump and the rise of nationalists, who want to shut their borders from outside competition. Here is a recent article on the subject - https://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/27/us/math-test-scores-decline-high-school-seniors.html |
I strongly disagree with the minister. Times have changed. The share amount of increased knowledge between when the minister was in school and now is tremendous. We now live in a globalised world where job competition comes not only from your local environment, but from the world over. Children need a very good foundation to be able to compete and get good jobs or careers in the future. In other serious climes like Japan and China, schook children are grilled from 8:00 AM to sundown. - https://web-japan.org/kidsweb/faq/life02.html Student in Japan even go to cram school and until recently go to school on Saturdays. China's school day is similar to Japan but slightly less rigorous. The school day in China runs from 7:30AM to 5:00PM. In France the school day is 8 to 4. All these countries have much higher literacy levels than Nigeria. Japan's literacy level is 100% Meanwhile Nigeria with a literacy level of less than 40% is running an 8:00PM to 1 or 2:00PM school, that is even assuming teachers are not on strike or schools are not on public holidays (Nigeria has about the highest number of public holidays in the world). Here are some school calenders from around the world - https://www.infoplease.com/world/world-statistics/school-years-around-world My children go to school by 7:30 and don't come home till 6:00PM. They stay for school lesson (where they treat their homework), go for music class thrice a week, and go for computer class. No one brings a result of less than 80% home. One has never gotten less than 90%. The government and our people need to take education seriously, if we hope to get out of this mess we find ourself in. |
LKO:The 7 day notice is irrelevant because there is nothing your dad can do if the tenant does not pack out after seven days. It is only a court that can forcefully evict a tenant. Go to the nearest rent tribunal, get a charge and bail lawyer there. There are many freelance charge and bail lawyers milling around rents tribunals. They are very cheap and they understand the system. You can then charge the tenants to court and hopefully get them evicted between 3 to 6 months. |
Bbdealer:Nigerians are experts in whataboutism. This is not about owning a property or planing to own one, this is about a tenants right to peace of mind and stability. A landlord can only hire thugs for someone who does not know his rights or a coward. Hire thugs to invade the home of a person who knows his rights and the landlord will pay restitution through his nose or even go to jail. You guys are talking like the landlord will just pack out the load of a tenant after the expiration of the quit notice without going through the judicial system. Arguments will still be presented at the courts as to the reasons for the quit notice and when the tenants can leave or be evicted. The court case can only be commenced after the expiration of the eviction date and the case can remain in court for between 3 to 12 months. |
crafteck:You seem not to get it. I was not only talking about rent but also other associated costs also. Let me give a typical example; Imagine a banker earning N150,000 a month, paying hose rent of 450,000 a year with 2 kids in secondary school (I am not even talking about tertiary education yet). School fees alone will gulp at least N200,000 per term for medium grade school. Other associated costs like school transport, feeding, books and extra curricular activities would gulp almost half of the school fees. He will need to fuel his car or transport himself to work, feed his family and run his home. At the end of the month, he will hardly save up to 50,000 if he is extra prudent. Now imagine he is forced to move suddenly (Even within 6 months). First a similar house would cost higher - around 500,000 to 600,000. (New tenants pay higher in lagos). Agency and agreement would be around N150,000 ( maybe he can get N120,000 with much begging). Caution fees would be around N50,000. So the total he is expected to cough up for a new house within 6 months is around N700,000. He will need around 30,000 - 50,000 to move his properties, then he would need to paint the new house, redo the kitchen and do some repair works (except it's a brand new house) If the new house is near his former house fine, but if it is some distance away, then the children might need to change school, which on it's own is quite expensive (new uniforms, books, etc). And all these are for a man that earns N150,000 a month. Now, how many Nigerians legitimately earn N150,000 a month, when the minimum wage is N18,000. The problem with Nigeria is that we run a distorted economy, distorted by corruption and crime. Almost everyone is involved in one crime or the other to meet basic standard of living. A banker earning N150,000/ month driving a N3 million car, his children going to 350,000/term school and building a N10million house. Same thing for that local government chairman, commissioner, governor, etc. Ditto also for that police man, custom officer, LASMA official. It is the ones who are not in a position to beat the system that suffers. Other economics are not run on distorted economic model, you can actually live on living wage |
mfm04622:The landlord is not following the law. The law says 6 months from the expiration of the tenancy, the landlord only gave 2 months. Even after the expiration of the 6 months, the law allows for extra 2 or 3 months. |
gypsey:Which one be second notice again? If you like give then 10th eviction notice, they would not bulge, because as you said they have no money to pay rent or move out. You do not need a second eviction notice for a tenant who has defaulted for 2 years. Just sue them to the nearest court (rent tribunal), and let the court determine the earliest time they can be forcefully evicted. |
crafteck:It's because you do not need the money. If you did, you would have given quit notice after 3 months of excuses. Even now, if you have not started eviction process, they would give excuses for another 2 years. |
crafteck:You are not in his pocket, 6 months might not be enough for him to raise the money to pay agency and agreement and the rent (which is always higher for new tenants ). I am not holding brief for him, but it might just not be convenient for him to move himself and his whole family in 6 months. When I was a bachelor, my landlady then wanted to increase rent outrageously, I refused. She issued me 28 days quit notice, I threatened her with a lawyer. She then came to the house pleading and crying, that she depends on the rent for paying her children's school fees. I voluntarily moved out before the expiration of my rent. If I was a family man, it would not have been that easy. |
crafteck:Where did you get the idea that the Poster wants to punish the landlord? The OP said his rent is fully paid and prepared to renew at the expiration of the present rent. |
gypsey:Why allow people stay in your property for up to two years without ejecting them legally? Can't you afford a lawyer? If tenants refuse to pay for up to two years, it's most likely they would never pay, as it is cheaper to just pack out and get a new apartment. Landlord should not just have the power to evict tenants at their wimps and caprices, without reasons. It would lead to blackmail and exploitation of tenants. It takes time, logistics and money to move to another apartment. This is Nigeria. |
Nlearn:It's not easy to just move out like that. The logistic of moving and resettling in a new environment can be daunting, especially for a family man. The children might need to change schools and you might be in the middle of the school session . The wife's business and workplace might be near the present house, not to talk about the husband's. Then there is the extra cost of looking for a new house, moving and settling down. You have to pay new agency and agreement and caution fees apart from higher rent, I am not even talking about moving costs and renovations to bring the new house to your taste level. You might find it difficult to raise all these money in 6 months. It's a travesty of justice to be forced to move just after two or three years of renting an apartment and forced to go through the motions once again. |
kessdivine4all:I inherited N127bn debt from Obi – Obiano https://www.google.com/amp/s/sunnewsonline.com/i-inherited-n127bn-debt-from-obi-obiano/amp/ |
iwadobo:Poor analogy. The goods were not being stolen by outsiders, but by your employees, including the sales cash by cashiers and accountants. The worse part is that most of your staff are collaborating to rob you. How will installation of cameras catch accountants manipulating the books? Who will install the cameras and who will monitor them? How will retraining staff stop theft and stealing? Are you insinuating you can train people to stop stealing? Who will do the tagging and who will operate the hardware and software? If you shop is being bankrupt due to stealing by unscrupulous staff, will it not make sense to sack everybody, invite the police to interrogate and investigate, prosecute the culprits and at least recover some of your money. Hire new staff after stringent hiring procedures and put in place more stringent monitoring. |
krendo:False. China did not make a quantum leap in the last decade. China had be strategising and planning since the mid 70s. They had been building infrastructure, improving their education and training medium and high level manpower since the 70s. The blackman has still not shown here can see beyond the now or at best his immediate future. China has laid down its developmental plans for the next 50 years, we are still grappling with what we will eat tomorrow. |
gentlegenius:Peter goofed by comparing Nigeria to China. China is diametrically different from Nigeria in terms of history, landmass, demographics, economic model, political system and value system. Nigeria has nothing in common with China. A more sensible example would have been Malaysia or even Thailand, who also suffered the British colonial system and operate similar former of government. |
donsmall94:He is using the Big Lie technique, coined and perfected by Hitler. Read more about The Big Lie here; Method |
Newznow:Very wrong and poor example. PDP under Jonathan already has a bad reputation for condoning or at least trivialising corruption. Remember the "Stealing is not corruption ", how much did Jim Nwobodo stole" and goat and yam statements. Obi is simply reinforcing that perception of PDP. As a business man, if you discover major existential stealing and thieves in your business, you shut down the business, fish out the thieves and get rid of them as soon as possible. |
Wheezdwisdom:All you said are speculations without any data or fact to back it up. Most rice consumed in Nigeria or logos at least is smuggled rice from coutonu. Go to seme, Owode you will witness truck loads of rice (and frozen chicken) being smuggled into the country, especially during the night. Go to Oworonshoki or songo, you will see warehouses where these smuggled rice are stored prior to distribution. Yes, there has been some improvements in local rice production, but it's nowhere near 97% the VP is touting. If 97% of our rice is locally produced, then there is no reason a bag of rice should be selling for between N18,000 and N20,000 right now. |
