Liverpool renews interest in Taye Taiwo By Mark Ogagan reportting from Angola Friday, January 22, 2010 Liverpool manager, Rafa Benitez, is reportedly in the French press to be stepping up his pursuit of Super Eagles Olympique de Marseille’s powerful left-back Taye Taiwo after Inter Milan showed an interest. Ideally, Liverpool would prefer to wait until the summer to sign the powerful Nigerian but with Jose Mourinho ready to pounce, it would seem a deal will be pushed through as soon as Ryan Babel departs from Anfield. Taiwo issued a ‘come and get me’ plea to the Premier League big four at the end of last season which alerted Liverpool who is in the hunt to add a left-sided defender to the squad following the departure of the disappointing Andrea Dossena. The Reds have had to rely heavily on Argentine youngster Emiliano Insua but ideally Benitez would prefer to introduce him gradually into the side. If Taiwo can be signed, the Nigerian and currently injured right-back Glen Johnson would provide Liverpool with two of the most attacking full-backs in the Premier League. The player is confident in his ability which was perfectly illustrated by his comments to France-Football, “If I was to depart, then I would not join a small club. It will be Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool or Arsenal.” The defender wants to test his ability to play against the very best in the Premier League as Taiwo’s comments illustrate, “I am not scared by the level in England. I believe I have the right level to defend against Wayne Rooney. The 24-year-old Nigerian international has been linked to numerous Premier League clubs in the past year particularly Tottenham and Man City. However, it would seem that Liverpool are now competing with Italian league leaders Inter for the marauding left-back. The player’s agent Franco Jovino has suggested that a move is more likely in the summer than in January but with Marseille 12 points behind league leaders Bordeaux, his club may decide to cash in now. He said: “He is interesting many clubs but for now nothing is concrete, particularly as regards Inter and the Italian clubs in general. Nigerian star impressing in Angola “The player is especially popular in the Premier League. The possibility of moving in January? It’s complicated. More likely in June.” Liverpool is the club that would ideally suit the Nigerian from the current big four. Gael Clichy, Patrice Evra and Ashley Cole are all regulars in their respective teams and would take some shifting. Fabio Aurelio is arguably Liverpool’s current first choice left-back although he had been used in midfield of late. Young Argentine Emiliano Insua has shown potential but is also liable to make mistakes and has come in for recent criticism. Alternatively Taiwo would fit perfectly into Liverpool’s style of play and has far more experience. The left-back has played in France for the last six seasons and has made 149 league appearances for the club (11 goals). Marseille finished 16th in the 2007/08 season which led to speculation concerning a number of their players but they managed to retain the Nigerian and it has paid off. The club came 2nd last season just three points behind champions Bordeaux with Taiwo playing in 35 of the team’s 38 league games (34 starts). However, with the French title looking out of the club’s reach, the player is likely to leave. Marseille Star on the Move? Not only is Taiwo renowned for his no-nonsense defending but also his attacking forays and powerful shooting ability. His long range efforts have been clocked at over 80mph so expect him to fight with Steven Gerrard to take charge of free-kicks if he does sign for Liverpool. Taiwo was signed by Marseille to replace legendary French full-back Bixente Lizarazu and has become a cult figure for the club. He was part of the Nigerian side that lost to Argentina in the final of the 2005 World Youth Championships. In fact, he was voted 3rd best player in the tournament behind Lionel Messi and Obi Mikel. The Nigerian international is a regular in his senior national side scoring seven goals. He has played in three African Cup of Nations tournaments and is currently in Angola as the Super Eagles has advanced through the group stage which will make negotiations difficult. So, would you like Liverpool to bring the 2006 African Young Player of the Year to the Premier League? Do you think the club is already strong in that position? Let’s hear your views. |

The Nigeria Football Federation will prefer that the Presidential Task Force stays away from them in Angola where they are prosecuting the on-going Africa Cup of Nations. Their feeling is an indication that the cold war between them and PTF is worsening and even getting more pronounced. One of them spoke their mind yesterday, Eagles’s 3-0 pouncing on Mozambique apparently boosting their confidence. “Tunisia are here with two aircraft. One flies their team to the venues and the other their fans. They have government support committee, an equivalent of our own PTF. However, theirs is working assiduously with their federation but one cannot say that of ours. Our PTF came here in their chartered aircraft which flew their members for about eight days and returned to Nigeria with all their members. They plan to come again for quarter or semi-final. While they were here there was tension and our team couldn’t play well in our first two matches. They left and we played our best match. Is it not better they leave us alone? They have not helped us financially or morally. Rather, they create tension. And it is affecting us because we respect them. They are a Task Force from the Presidency and we ought to be working together.” A member of the Task Force was rather surprised and reacted this way: “They (federation members) are naive and incompetent. Would Nigeria have qualified for the World Cup if we didn’t come in? Why do they panic when we are around? If they were doing well would the President have set up a Task Force? Their grudge is that the Task Force feels that Nigeria will do better with a foreign coach for the World Cup but they say that they want to swim or sink with Amodu. Reasonable people who have the interest of the game at heart will not take such a position. They don’t really understand the game that they are running.” Some members of the PTF have voiced their intention to take over the running of the federation. While some will welcome this others feel that it will count against their integrity especially following the allegation that these members want the Eagles to fail to ease their entry into the federation. However, it is totally wrong to paint the entire Task Force so as some like the Chairman, governor Rotimi Amaechi, the Sports Minister Sani Ndanusa and John Mastroudes stand out. But is the federation, in the first place doing well? Nigerians know better. |
A former Green Eagles defender, Bright Omokaro, is convinced the Super Eagles will make it to the Nations Cup final in Angola if coach Shaibu Amodu decides to field the players that beat the Mambas of Mozambique in their last Group C match on Wednesday. Nigeria beat Mozambique 3-0 to place second in the group with six points and advanced to the quarterfinals to meet Zambia on Monday. Omokaro told our correspondent on the telephone on Thursday that he believed the players that did the job for Nigeria were capable of beating any opponent in the competition. He said, ”I was impressed with the way they showed their commitment in the match. The coach made a good decision with the selection on Wednesday and I would advise him to feature the same set in the subsequent matches. ”If a particular team has won a match for you convincingly for you, you don‘t change it for the next match. What the coach needs to do is to look for weaknesses and try to strengthen them before the players march out again. “I’ll always praise for Osaze Odemwingie. He is one player that has given Nigeria the edge in the competition. ”Danny Shittu also played well in the game. This goes to show that they are gradually becoming a team we all wanted. They can only improve with every match if the coach features the best players.” Omokaro warned against Amodu’s sacking, saying it would be a big error on the part of the Nigeria Football Federation. ”The knew Amodu could do it, that was the reason they hired him in the first place,” Omokaro said. “If they knew they were going to change him, they should not have bothered him with the Nations Cup assignment. It is too late at this time to hire another coach for the team before the World Cup.” |

the last FINAL WORD on how zambia topped When ONLY two teams are tied on the same points, the result of the game played between the two teams becomes the deciding factor. That is how Algeria was able to qualify instead of Mali (They were tied on points, Algeria had beaten Mali 1-0 in the group stage) However, the situation becomes completely different when 3 or more teams are tied on the same points (in this case, Cameroon, Zambia, Gabon) The results obtained (example Cameroon defeated Zambia, Zambia defeated Gabon and Gabon defeated Cameroon) are irrelevant and only used only if TWO teams are tied. What happens in this case is that points, goals difference, Goals scored etc are re-calculated, without any result involving the losing team (in this case Tunisia). Having done that ,Zambia topped the group by scoring the highest number of goals. Let's see how Zambia beat Gabon (2-1), lost to Cameroon (3-2) Zambia's Total Points (TP):3, Goal Difference (GD):0, Total goals (TG): 4 Cameroon beat Zambia (3-2) lost to Gabon: 1-0 TP 3 GD:0,TG:3 Gabon beat Cameroon 1:0 lost to Zambia 2-1. TP:3, GD:0, TG:2 It is unbelievable that Amokachi is waiting for the final word from CAF as if CAF decides who takes on who in the knock out stages just like that. It has exposed our lack of in-depth and thorough analysis of issues and our inability to do simple Math |

January 21, 2010 15:52 (6 hours ago), 372 views By Cyriacus Izuekwe A traditional herbalist, Alfa Shehu Dauda Oseni, who claimed that a 20-year old woman delivered a tortoise and a baby girl in his clinic at Ikotun, Lagos is now facing another controversy. Alfa, as he is popularly known, has been accused of taking another man’s wife, Mrs. Olajide Akeem, who went to him for prayers. Narrating how Alfa Oseni impregnated her when she went to him for prayers before the Alimosho Grade ‘B’ Customary Court, Olajide disclosed that she had gone to Alfa Oseni to help her because she could not get pregnant for her husband, Waidi Akeem. In her testimony before the court presided by Mr. Eko, the petitioner said she had been married to Akeem for seven years without a child. She explained that with her husband’s consent, she went to Alfa Oseni for prayers and she was hypnotised and started living with him. The embittered woman told the court that Alfa Oseni impregnated her and now she has an 11-month old girl for him. She prayed the court to dissolve the relationship, so that she can go back to her husband. According to her, she never wanted to live with Alfa Oseni as his wife, adding that she suspected that he hypnotised her to stay with him. She revealed that she regained herself when her husband (Waidi) came to the clinic to fight Alfa Oseni and rescued her. She claimed that her life would be in danger if the court failed to dissolve the relationship. The respondent has so far refused to show up in court after repeated notice to appear before the court. |

Super Eagles coach Shaibu Amodu has said that the Indomitable Lions of Cameroun do not scare him if both teams meet in the next round of the Africa Nations Cup. Speaking after the Eagles‘ 3-0 victory over Mozambique on Wednesday, Amodu said he would prefer to review the match again before thinking of any other opponent in the quarterfinals. He said, ”Cameroun in the quarterfinals? That‘s no problem but I want to savour this victory first, go over the match again before focusing on the next opponents.” Amodu said the victory was not just a flash in the pan but one that was pre-conceived, stressing that his criticisms do not bother him. He said, ”We would have played safe and drawn the match and still qualified. But we needed to test our work and see how we can win with big margin. Many people have criticised me but it only makes me work more. Even if I win the World Cup, Nigerians will still have things to say about me.” Meanwhile, Osaze Odemwingie has prised his teammates for Nigeria‘s qualification for the quarterfinals He said, ”We played as a team and better than before. I scored twice and I am happy but I could not have done it if the team had played badly. I am satisfied with our performance , our focus will now be on the quarterfinals.” |

From Gowon Akpodonor, Lubango THE news of the sack of Coach Shuaibu Amodu was received with mixed feelings in the camp of the Super Eagles in Lubango, with a some of the players condemning the action of the Presidential Task Force (PTF), while a few others saw the decision as the only way forward in putting the team in good shape for the South Africa 2010 World Cup. But officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) say they were yet to receive any order to sack Amodu, and as such, the coach remains in charge of the team in today's last group match against the Mambas of Mozambique. It is a match the Eagles need to win to stay afloat in the competition. There were conflicting reports on Monday, when the news filtered into the camp of the Super Eagles that the Presidency had sacked Amodu. The NFF President, Sani Lulu Abdullahi, was said to have received an executive order to sack Amodu and replace him with a foreign coach immediately, following the team's not-too-impressive performance in the African Cup of Nations. Though, the players refused to speak with journalists on their feelings about the alleged sack, it was learnt that majority of them faulted the decision, while few others welcomed it. However, a board member of the NFF, Shehu Adamu, who spoke with The Guardian yesterday said that the news of Amodu's sack was a mere fabrication by some people, saying: "I am sure that nobody gave sure order to sack Amodu because there is no basis for it since the man has not breached the contractual agreement he entered with us. "Amodu has the mandate to qualify Nigeria for the World Cup and take the Super Eagles to the semi final stage of the African Cup of Nations. So far the Super Eagles is still on course and I don't see the reason why somebody will wake up over night to issue an order that the coach should be sacked. As far as I am concerned, the board of the NFF has not received such order from anybody and Amodu remains the coach of the Super Eagles," Adamu stated. Also speaking with The Guardian shortly before the team set out for training yesterday, the Chairman of NFF's Technical Committee, Taiwo Ogunjobi, said that Amodu is in charge of the team. "We have not received any order from any quarter to sack Amodu. We heard the news when some people called us on Monday evening and since then we have not received any order from anybody to sack him. We remained focus for the match against Mozambique tomorrow (today). As you can see, we are preparing for our evening training and Amodu is leading the team." The move to sack Amodu had been on the card ever since Nigeria qualified for the 2010 World Cup. Saved for the resistance on the part of Lulu, the Presidential Task Force (PTF) would have replaced Amodu with a foreign coach for the Nations Cup, which is part of Nigeria's preparations for the World Cup. Before their departure from Benguela to Nigeria on Sunday, some members of the PTF openly expressed their displeasure over the way and manner Amodu was handling the team, especially after the team struggled to a 1-0 victory over the Squirrels of Benin Republic. The trio of Abdulmumuni Aminu, John Fashanu and Larry Izamoje were of the views that with Amodu still in-charge of the team, Nigeria will be a laughing stock when the World Cup party begins in South Africa in June. The PTF Chairman, Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, Sports Minister, Sani Ndanusa and the NFF boss, Sani Lulu, held a marathon meeting on Saturday at the Hotel De Ombaka, discussing on how to re-shape the team for the World Cup. While the duo of Ogunjobi and Adamu did not see any reason for Amodu's sack at this point in time, some of the board members and secretariat workers of the NFF see things from another angle. Some of them who spoke with The Guardian yesterday said that as far as Lulu remains the president of the NFF, it would be difficult for anybody to torch Amodu. One of them said: "I don't see Lulu bowing to the PTF on this issue of Amodu. I don't know the reasons but from what I have seen so far, the PTF will have to go the extra miles in this battle to remove Amodu." Apart from being accused of fielding 'old legs', a majority of Nigerians want Amodu sacked for his inability to read games, wrong selection of players for matches as well as his poor substitutions during important matches. The coach has also been accused of 'poor' relationship with people, especially Nigerian journalists during the current CAN2010 tournament. |
Portugal Head Coach, Carlos Queiroz says he wants to see the Super Eagles fire from all possible cylinders in their remaining matches of the Africa Cup of Nations. He expressed his disappointment at their marksmanship showing so far in Angola. Queiroz who made his mind known at the VIP box of the Estadio Nacional De Ombaka in Benguela on Saturday as the Eagles laboured to a 1-0 win over tiny neighbour Benin Republic in Group C added: "I expected a better performance, honestly. But I believe they will pick up as they go ahead in the tournament." Organisers of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Finals South Africa have been planning a match between Nigeria and Portugal as part of the activities to mark 100 days to the World Cup. But Queiroz´s statement could mean he is no longer keen on a game with a team playing the way the Super Eagles are doing. Speaking in the same vein, NFF consultant Tunde Adelakun said in Lubango on Monday morning that there was still room for improvement for the Nigeria team at the on-going championship. He said: "I believe the team has far more capacity and ability than they have shown. Perhaps one or two things have not gone right for them and those things are probably making them look bad tactically and technically. But I know they can rise up from this, and with the win over Benin Republic, I expect the confidence of their first victory to buoy them up and make them approach the remaining matches in a better frame. "The important thing is for everyone that matters to stick with the team and have faith that they can go all the way." |
How age difference and pride parted 9ice/Payne Tuesday, January 19, 2010 Close friend of 9ice has asserted that the surprise wedding of the musician to Toni Payne was not meant to last as it was basically “a business deal to 9ice”. Disclosing to RMT in Lagos recently, the artiste manager said the age disparity between the duo was one of the reasons 9ice gave his friends for parting ways with the American-born lady. “9ice never planned to marry Toni, but he hadn’t made much when she showed up in his life, and he wanted to create the image of a good guy. According to him,” 9ice’s lot changed immediately he came back from the UK after performing at the Nelson Mandela party. “Before that party though, 9ice had been eager to travel abroad and he practically begged promoters to take him overseas. When the Mandela invitation came, he wasted no time in accepting it. He never even negotiated good money with the promoter and also didn’t rehearse at all. That was why he was tongue-tied when he saw the huge crowd. “Toni came on the picture after that as she took over as 9ice’s manager. She began by changing his wardrobe, teaching him how to speak in public. She virtually became her manager, a development 9ice never liked as she sidelined his good friend and manager,” he revealed. With time, 9ice gained confidence and started frolicking with girls, which Toni couldn’t tolerate,” RMT source alleged. “She also complained that 9ice had become arrogant and proud. The final straw was when 9ice told it to Toni outright just before Xmas that she couldn’t manage him and that she was suffocating him. “Not to get a bad press, both agreed to part ways amicably, but the truth is, 9ice has got what he wanted from Toni and he now wants to live his life how he has always wanted it”. When RMT called 9ice, the man that answered his phone said his musician was not ready to speak on the issue for now. “He has already said he would let the media know what has happened when the time is right. The time is not right for now, we would appreciate it if you guys would let them be,” he said. |
Conflicting reports over Amodu's sack Stories from Gowon Akpodonor, Lubango THERE were conflicting reports yesterday over the fate of Super Eagles Coach, Shuaibu Amodu, following the below par performance of his team at the on-going African Nations Cup. The Guardian learnt from reliable sources in the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) that NFF President, Sani Lulu Abdullahi, was given an executive order to sack Amodu and replace him with a foreign coach immediately. A source said that when the NFF board met with the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on Saturday night, the PTF told the federation that there was a directive from the Vice Presidency to sack Amodu immediately after the game against Benin Republic. Lulu resisted as usual, but was told that further intransigence would be construed as direct contravention of a presidential order. The Guardian gathered that the NFF lawyers have started going through Amodu's contract to ensure amicable settlement of the terms of termination, just as a committee was set up to look at what it would cost to hire a new coach. However, when contacted in Lubango yesterday, NFF technical committee chairman, Taiwo Ogunjobi, said he was unaware of any such directive to sack Amodu, adding that the coach and his crew were assured of retaining their jobs if the Super Eagles won the Nations Cup. Ten students of the Atiku Abubakar-owned American University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola have been expelled for their involvement in clandestine and anti social acts. AUN is rated as the first University in sub Saharan Africa to introduce American style of education. Among those rusticated by the university is a family member of President Umaru Yar’Adua named Akilu Musa Yar’Adua. David Kosoko, the Director of Students’ Affairs of the American University of Nigeria, while briefing journalists on the school campus at the weekend the decision was informed by the university’s hard stance and none tolerance of unscrupulous behaviours by students. Kosoko confirmed that Akilu Musa Yar’Adua and nine others were expelled for indulging in drugs and other related offences. The Director of Student Affairs said: “It is the responsibility of the school to ensure safety of students on campus because if anything happens to them, we are accountable to their parents. “Therefore, we have put in place rules and regulations that will be an excuse in terms of what the institution is required to do. “If any students is involved in theft, drug related cases and fighting, the offence attracts outright dismissal and this forms the core of our zero tolerance for anti-social vices.” He further stated that in accordance with AUN’s policy, the affected students had been ordered to leave the school campus. The expulsion was the main highlight of activities marking the university’s orientation for its freshmen for the 2010 spring and the student affairs director added that 300 new students were to be enrolled for studies in the 2010 spring semester. He other serious misdemeanors such as unwarranted visitation, dormitory visitations, late night crawling in and outside the campus were punishable, warning the students to desist from any acts that could cause them to be punished. Similarly, the Academic Vice President of the institution, Bayo Lawal who also confirmed the expulsions decried the rising fears over rampant cases of laptop theft in the school. Lawal announced that 10 percent of the entire students’ enrolment into the institution every semester was on scholarship in line with the philosophy of the founder and former vice president Atiku Abubakar, |
