Sagamite: If you are my wife and you ever have the guts to ever do this, you will see FIRE!
There is absolutely no way you will see a minute of happiness in that household til the minute I kick you out (And I would ensure you don't see much of it after you are out). You would wonder the curse someone placed on you or, if there is a god, that allowed you to get a man like me.
Tears would be coming out from not only your eyes but also your ears by the time I finish.
This is the kind of trouble I love because I know how to deal with it. +1. |
Culture › Re: Where Is Oduduwa Really From? by X2X(m): 4:58pm On Sep 10, 2009 |
this story of Oduduwa descending from the sky preceeded by a chicken which prepared the way for him-
on closer analysis, is this myth a symbol for something else?
I dont really buy the idea that Oduduwa miraculously appeared out of nowhere and fantastically became the overall king just like that.
I think the chicken stands for someone or some people who were already in Ife or wherever, before him, and who were making things conducive in readiness for his appearance.
And why do some tribes have klgends of people descending from the sky when there were no airplanes? The Ogisos of Benin, for example, were called sky kings. Yorubas say Oduduwa or Obatala appeared from the sky.
What does sky mean? Huh
thirdly, what's in these medicine pots that people carried on their heads in the olden days when emigrating from their towns, and why were they told to settle wherever it broke? The Ogiso, or Ogie-Iso, were sky kings. According to the Bini account, Oduduwa is the son of Ogiso Owodo, thus it makes sense for Oduduwa to tell those he met at Ile-Ife that he "descended (or fell or came) from the sky". On the chickens, I think you are right that it stands for someone preparing grounds for Oduduwa. In fact, the Bini account identifies a certain Iha (Ifa) priest, or babalawo, who moved from Edo land to Ekiti and eventually to Ife. According to their account, he played a significant role which led to the acceptance of Oduduwa's (by the Yoruba aborigines) and his installation as the the Ooni of Ile-Ife. |

Family › Re: Your Wife Or Mother Who Would You Entrust With Your Money? by X2X(m): 12:17pm On Jun 12, 2009 |
Lagosboy: I dey feel u jare . Many people dont like to face reality and base things on emotions. Yes marriage is to bring two people together and you can entrust some money with your wife no doubt but from the posters question it seems like the bulk of the money. As long as your wife has enough for her to live on and the kids will not suffer, the excess cash or investment you could entrust in your mum.
"till death do us part" thousands of people say this every day in religious marriages and civil as well but thousands of divorce proceedings are handled by courts at the same time. That is the reality of the world we live in. A wife could be changed a mother can never be replaced. A good mother will never betray the fruit of her womb, a good mother will always remain when everyone has left you in times of trials. This is the same woman tha laboured hard to bring you up to a stage that your wife could admire you and marry you. If your wife grew up she would expect the same from your son, Its a cycle no one loses out. The wife today is a mother tommorrow. When i look at how women suffer to cater for children , sleepless nights and crazy routines I myself will curse my son if he doesnt place his mother above everything in life including myself.
All said within the context of having a good mother which we all understand !!! I dey feel you jare. I couldnt have said it better. |

Anyone one has current info on £/₦ please? |
Career › Re: Best Paying Company In Nigeria? by X2X(m): 4:49pm On Jun 02, 2009 |
Sagamite: Hi,
My reason for the statement was based on my knowledge about 4 years ago that PhD holders were being paid about £28 in the top oil and gas firms whilst BSc holders were paid about £25K. Taking into account inflationary salary increases, I will not expect the starting salary to have exceeded £32K today. @Sagamite I can see where you are coming from. The thing is that the top oil and gas firms in the UK (BP for example) typically have the lowest starting salaries in the oil industry. Independents (e.g Apache North Sea, Talisman UK, Maersk Oil etc) and small consulting firms (e.g. Synergy, Petroleum Experts, Eclipse Petrotech, etc) always offer more. The reason for this is that fresh grads will prefer to work for the super-majors, so the small (less popular independents and consulting) firms would have to offer more to lure the fresh grads. Offers for Msc Pet Eng (March 2007): BP - £28 000* BG - £30 000 Shell - £31 500 Apache - £34 000 Petroleum Experts - £ 40 000 * - actually Nov 2006. Although the starting salaries of the super majors are smaller, you've got brighter prospects in terms of career development and they take better care of you - another reason why they are not so keen to pay top dollar for freshers. Also remeber that starting salaries in these companies are much more positively correlated to oil prices than to inflation indices - in 2006, 2007 and a good portion of 2008, oil price was soaring to record levels. Just for info, Msc holders who joined us (one of the top 3 listed above) last September where offered £32 000. They got a raise to 34k this April - this represents more than a 6% raise in less than 6 months - unthinkable, given the current economic climate in the UK, but it is true. Sagamite: Rationally, I would expect employees in the UK to earn more than those in a third world country like Nigeria, so I find it a struggle to believe guys in Nigeria at entry level with just a BSc are earning the equivalent of £40 - 45K, especially with a more favourable tax regime. Basically they earn more, are taxed less, have a lower degree classification (PhD vs BSc), obtained BSc degrees from poorer universities and have lower cost of living. Too good to be true in my opinion; Blacks being treated more favourably than Whites? That would not even happen in a Black-owned company.
But since you appear to come across as an insider, I will find it a struggle to challenge your opinion. That is why I wanted to know how the oil and gas pay structure in Nigeria works to the point it is that high. In fact you are correct. It is an illusion. The pay structure of upstream oil and gas companies in Nigeria is not only confusing, it is misleading. When they give you a offer that states NGN 8.2 Million, that includes your gross salary, and most allowances - some of these allowances are paid once in four years, but they will "calculate" everything into your offer letter, making the figure bloated. As an example (again using 2007 figures), in naira terms, a Reservoir Engineer in the UK just straight from uni had a monthly take home pay that was almost double that of his counterpart in Nigeria even though his (the UK) annual package was (apparently) about a million naira lesser. Moreover, the total benefit package does not just come down to naira and kobo. Other benefit elements (like share options) are usually always skewed in favour of the oyinbos. Cheers. |
Career › Re: Best Paying Company In Nigeria? by X2X(m): 4:59am On Jun 02, 2009 |
Sagamite: I will have to say that is rubbish, no disrespect.
Even the guys with PhD in the UK at entry level don't earn that much. Sagamite, dont generalise. When I started working in the UK, my starting salary in 2007 with an Msc was equivalent to NGN 7.5 Million. I mean gross (pre tax) salary, excluding bonus. This is fresh from school, without any work experience. None whatsoever. My mates who returned to Nigeria (with the Msc) at that time had a full package of around 8.2 Million (including allowances, etc). When you talk of UK Phd holder not getting that much, I have to ask: Phd in what? If you had an Msc in Petroleum Engineering (Imperial College or Heriot Watt Uni) in 2007, you could command as much as £40000/annum (minus bonus) without any experience. £30000 was about the minimun then for such a degree. Numbers should be up in 2009, I would have imagined. Hesperus: Err. . .wrong! Dont know about your UK PhD holders, but I know boys who have just an Engineering BSc from Naija Universities who earn that much. And they got the jobs fresh out of school! Indeed. My mates in Nigeria who didnt bother to go with us for the Msc, opting to get a job immediately after Bsc (I mean Nigerian BSc) got in at no less than 7 Million (including allowances, etc). |
Career › Re: Please , Need Urgent Advice - On These Scholarships From Experts In Geosciences by X2X(m): 10:20am On May 21, 2009 |
Got to Heriot Watt.
The course is very well respected within the industry and you will complete it in 1 yr. It is very challenging sha, as dey pack a lot into the 1 year.
I think it also builds on your experience, which will place you at an advantage in the eyes of employers.
I dont know why Delft call their course "Msc Petroleum Engineering and Geosciences". Are they training you to be a Petroleum Engineer or a Geoscientists? Methinks at the Msc level, you need to be focusing on one or the other, not both - another reason why I would prefer Heriot-Watt.
Maybe I am just biased, being an alumni of Heriot Watt myself.
Whichever one you choose, good luck. |
Properties › Re: Where To Settle - Ibadan Vs Abuja? Analyse Or Give Your Opinion Please by X2X(m): 12:12pm On May 16, 2009 |
abujabooks: @Poster,
I will recommend Abuja anyday. Clean roads, Better electricity, Rail roads coming soon, better organised, good biz location, excellent schools for kids, jobs are available, contracts are available. It is better than some areas in d UK.
The disadvantage of Abuja is that, it is expensive in terms of rent and food. To overcome that challenge, buy a property on the outskirts of Abuja and since there is no traffic, you can commute easily to work. To overcome the food challenge, go to Suleja or Neighbouring States, and buy food that will last you 3 - 6 months.
Also, you need to own a car in Abuja. It is not a luxury but a necessity. The taxi are TOO EXPENSIVE. lol!
Ibadan is too local! Brilliant piece from abujabooks. The only thing I hate about Abuja is the heat during (some months of) the dry season. |

bukythom, Seems like you are asking about the police character certificate. I doubt you can do this without someone on ground in naija to help you. Basically, you need to get the form (scanned or hard copy), do your finger print, and fill in the other details (your name, address, etc) - Make sure your finger print is clear (preferably use dark ink) and return the form to your contact in naija. They can then submit it either at CID Alagbon or Abuja (these are the only two places where it is processed in naija - if you submit your forms else where, they will still have to take it to Alagbon or Abuja, which will take time, so better for your contact to take it there directly). Scanned copies are accepted, but your finger print must be clear, if not, the machine in Lagos/Abuja will be unable to read it, so you will have to re-send another set of forms. My friend did mine for me - collected the same day (but paid for "express" . If you dont already have the forms, I can email it to you (PM me with your email address). Cheers |
