horsepower101: Welcome to Owerri The Eastern Heartland
Credit to sanctity,prospect360,skybeetle,dikendike,ifeanyicymedia,IMO state new media and arinzeejikonye for posting.
If Ihedioha complements all this with a QUALITY/DURABLE network of inner-city roads and lots of trees, then Owerri will be the best looking state capital in Nigeria!
OMANBALA1: Enugu has no economic advantage like Kano has to facilitate the sort of economic boom that will attract revenue you can channel to infrastructures. Kano is the numero uno in northern Nigeria. I think Enugu state government is too concerned with housing estates and aesthetics. But , the average Enugu man is ok with their progress.
And in addition, Enugu doesn’t have the huge number of LGAs Kano has!
ABAthug: Kano was created the same time with Enugu, but look at Kano today while Enugu still look like colonial outpost or provincial district somewhere
Everyone should ignore this post! It’s another alternate moniker seeking to derail the thread!
Since the streets are less busy, they should have used this festive period to deep-clean all the streets! Not just Enugu, but all major cities and towns! They could have asked for about 100 volunteers who would be paid well for a three day temporary job....say 10K per day! A corporate entity like a bank or manufacturing coy could sponsor the event, and this would mean the state gov’t not spending a penny!
Abroad, public utilities pay their staff who volunteer to work over the festive period good overtime and they use the opportunity of less traffic to carry out major repairs to infrastructure! In Nigeria, the entire country shuts down and everyone rushes off to the villa’ for Christmas jolliment!
mktinsight: Sometimes I don't understand the herd mentality of people. People should learn to THINK for themselves instead of copying. An Airport is a hub of transportation. Nothing more, nothing less. It makes money from fees and taxes from flights. An airport is profitable the more valuable the flights that depart/arrive at its PORT. Most of Nigeria's airports are white elephants because they are built at huge cost and generate very little revenue.
Lets us an example - Asaba:
Asaba International Airport Cost: 32 billion. Passenger Traffic: 200,000 / year. Average Revenue per year (est.): 600m Operating Profit (est.) per year: < 130m
The State government has concessioned Asaba airport to private investors in exchange for 100m per year. The investors are not assuming the huge amount of debt sunk into the airport. Instead all they have to do is cover operational costs. But for Delta State government getting 100m per year it will take around 320 years to recover the 32b it sunk into that airport. That is the very definition of white elephant.
The only airports in Nigeria that are making serious money are the international airports with TRAFFIC. Lagos Murtala International Airport for example makes at least 15,000 per passenger and 3m international passengers go through it. Its revenue is easily over 45billion naira.
However, Enugu International does just 40,000 international passengers and 300,000 domestic passengers so its revenue is proably somewhere around 1.5 billion naira.
So given the low volume of flights throughout the South-East (Owerri, Enugu, Asaba), and the small distances between cities, the South-East State Governments really should be working together to promote ONE airport as a regional international aviation hub. Enugu ideally makes a lot of sense because of the existing infrastructure and federal investment. It was symbolic that all 5 state governors turned up when Goodluck pronounced that airport international.
Anambra State Government and others should focus on building proper large organized Bus and Truck terminals in cities for inter-state buses in major cities like Onitsha, Nnewi and Awka. This will yield a lot of revenue since most people move by road. For example, assume that around 3m people travel between Anambra and Lagos per year. If you build large bus terminals with bus ticketing offices and places to board buses and charge 7.5% VAT then a typical Lagos ticket of N4,000 will be taxed 300 yielding 1b in VAT on the Lagos-Anambra route. You concession parking, food stands, shops and bus terminals can compete with Air Ports in revenue.
The same goes for trucks and trailers and individal-owned buses. The State government loses a lot of revenue to street agents by allowing buses, trucks and trailers to park along the sides of expressways rather than in official parks. In organized countries, trailer parks not only yield parking revenue but conveniences.
Finally, the state has to recognize illegal hawkers not as symptoms of "poverty" but as a single-owner business. In other countries street vending is licensed and fixed to a particular spot and limited in number not to constitute nuisance. New York City for example has a few street stands where t-shirts or popcorn or bags are sold. They are carefully regulated. They have trash bins and pay tax to the city. But in Nigeria, you have armies of hawkers laying siege to popular corners of business districts dumping trash on the street or in gutters. Totally unregulated.
Your argument is flawed abi-initio because you base it on the present Nigerian political-economy that has Lagos and Abuja as centres of gravity! If Nigeria is restructured or dismembered, all airports in the south-east and south-south (existing and planned) would be viable in their own right!
Part of the problem is that the centre of entertainment in Nigeria is Lagos! Over the past two years there are a couple of very good songs sang by very talented Igbo musicians that got little or no traction! When i compare the following songs to what the Lagos entertainment press is hyping i start to wonder if its still about the talent and good music or are there other factors that lead to the prominence of certain artistes and their music!
It's not only Igbo musicians that don't get the recognition they deserve...even Teni that i'd rate as one of the top three musicians of the outgone year hasn't been rated well! Instead she's been trumped by the likes of Naira Marley!
Was watching a programme on Channels TV few days ago in which they were talking of ten Nigerian songs of the year that recorded the most views on youtube, can you imagine they missed out Rudeboys 'reason with me' that got the highest number of views for the year? They gave the top spot to Davidos' collabo with Chris Brown that didn't even get as many views!
This is part of why i want Nigeria either restuctured or dismembered.....let each region have its own Lagos!
The attached are examples of songs that didn't get the rocognition they deserved in the past two or so years! Use you headphones for a full appreciation!
Hedonisco: Fucking scary stuff. Looking at these uncountable urchins, they are clearly potential Boko Haram terrorists, kidnappers and bandits. Nigeria is in for it.
I'd even go one further and say they are CERTAINLY potential bokos, kidnappers and bandits! Tell me what future these hordes of kids will have when they've not been equipped with any skills and given the kind of love only a mum and dad can give!?
DonFreshmoney: This is what I call "Bami ala" crew...
Why bring children into the world that you cant cater for??... Hausa fulanis are the problem of this country... then in few years to come, they would join or create a terrorist organization to kill innocent civilians...
See the state of a president and a former head of state
But when Aunty Patience called them 'born-throway' the other day the north was furious and swore for her!
yemex04: My brother, Kanu is really feeding fat on this agenda..that his own means of livelihoods. He is actually a smart dude..
I think you’re mistaking IPOB and a genuine desire for freedom from the slave camp that is ‘one Nigeria’ for the greedy, rapacious, nepotistic and bigoted Nigerian elite that are feeding fat on Nigeria and its largely daft, docile and naive citizens!
Racoon: Same Maj.Gen.Buhari(Rtd) that never attended council of state meeting except when election matters are to be discussed? After bastardizing Nigeria beyond redemption ? So you now know that there is need for participatory democracy?
Eastlink: Wow! I've always known this would be the make up of Njaba/Anim/Orashi state. Any name chosen among these ones are okay by us, so long my people are reunited with the south east. This would be my last wish on earth for my children. Almost in tears now. Ndigbo should please support this state. My people need to be free from the prison called Rivers state. We've been marginalized for years simply because we didn't drop the Igbo tag. We belong in the south east and we're apologetic about it. May God bless Senator Arthur Nzeribe for drawing this map if really. Please for the sake of us Egbema Rivers, this state should see the light as the 6th SE state. Ohaneze and the South East Governors forum should make this a priority, even if supporting Buhari for third term, I care less.
This is Nigeria remember! The fact they’ve included oil/gas rich Rivers-Egbema leads me to believe the entire proposal will be crumpled up and chucked in the bin! And if Egbema leaves then Ndoni should leave too!
eduj: Gzi plant and. Their are four military towers around the facility, a high fence and road blocks makes it hard to take pics of the sprawling factory. Their are close to a hundred expatriates (American, Indian and Koreans) living and working in the factory at any given time. Makers of aluminum cans for Nigerian and Ghanaian breweries (exported through onne port)
I have uploaded pics of this factory somwhere on this thread. Notice the gas feed pipeline in the second pics? There are multiple gas metering and supply stations within the city. Power gas also has a little facility in the city-pics tomorrow
BeachLife: If you look at a live satellite ,you would see that river is shallow at only 20 ft deep and 200 M wide. There are a few small islands in between which further narrows the width .The entire river is in Calabar(Akwacross) Territory based on international law. Igboland can either have a river port at Onitsha which I prefer, but will cost billions of dollars , or have a dry port with a connecting railway to Calabar/akwa ibom seaport . But i'll advise igbolanders to be more diplomatic in their agitations and less antagonistic towards other ethnic nations, especially their neighbor and allies i'll assume the Calabarians . We all have our strengths and weaknesses and can work together for benefit of all . Do you see Sweden fighting Norway or South Korea fighting Japan? Why do blacks like fighting each other ? I think Igbos and calabarians are the most cohesive allies among all Nigerian ethnicity. But just because South Korea and Japan are cohesive does not mean they should be one country . P.s I think the ethnic groups first need to unite internally to curb internal sabotage ,then they can all decide . No ethnic nation can secede alone.Right now none of these groups are internally united.
I think Igbo should do some soul searching , shun antagonism, greed , and embrace diplomacy . Have you seen Japanese screaming and cursing after being bombed and defeated? Be humble and work in silence without revealing your plans and weaknesses for your enemies to mock and take advantage of . Cut your loss and move on from the controversial Biafra and the disgraceful past . Use the term "'Igboland"or 'AlaIgbo" just like Tswanaland (Botswana) or Ireland , and create a new flag and map. That simply makes more sense and will speed up the process.
I'm surprised those engaging you in argument are yet to suss out that you're a impostor! Which Igbo will use such wicked terms as the ones you used in the bolded to describe his own ethnicity? Pray, the Japan you were using to cite your dumb example....were they made to share the same country with the same people who had murdered them in their millions and still brag about it decades later? Not only that, but the Japanese were not sharing the same country with the very same people that hate their guts......under a political-economy that keeps them away from providing head of state; takes control of their resources; splits and reduces their ancestral land; and unfairly treats their entrepreneurs vis-a-vis those from the 'chosen' ethnicity that believe they own the country!
ANSMEDIA: Fivestar Golden Tulip Agulu Lake Resort Anambra. My cousins came back from Canada for holidays but by the time we got to Golden Tulip Agulu Lake it was already booked completely despite the fact that it is a very pricey hotel resort, though it's worth it. We got lucky that someone was checking out that evening, that was how we got in. This is same story across Anambra particularly in Awka where almost all the hotels were fully booked by holiday makers.
I always felt the hotel was a bit small...considering it would be one of the best in the state and wouldn’t lack for customers! They need to commence construction on a even better and larger capacity annex ASAP, as time is money! Ceasers Palace on the Las Vegas strip started of small like this, but had to build a even bigger and grander annex when their business improved!
If the airport is actually delivered by the end of the Obiano admin’, it should be expected demand for hotel accommodation in the state would shoot through the roof as even more diaspora, tourists, entrepreneurs and workers/contractors troop into the state en-masse!
neoclassical: What is wrong with some of you with your useless generalization? Though I am not from Abakaliki, but I am proudly from Ebonyi State, Afikpo precisely. Now, can we compare ourselves in terms of educational background, economic status or any other criterion or variable you may like to use. Enough of this disdain and insults on Ebonyians. I am in my early thirties, and I will round up my PhD program in Energy Economics a few months away. 80 percent of my siblings are Msc holders, same with many of my town people . Only a fool in his stupid thinking pattern and archaic innuendo will think poverty and educational backwardness are exclusive reserves for Ebonyians. If you think you are academically sound enough, I challenge you to a 30 minutes debate in this forum on any national topical issue of your choice. Nonsense
I don’t know when some of us will realise these people are not Igbo! Your responding to the bigot is just what he wants....to help drive home the narrative that Ndigbo don’t like themselves and are always fighting with one another! A strong, united and cohesive Igboland is a threat to them for whatever reason!
It’s instructive that one doesn’t find this happening to the other major ethnic groups....ie, Igbos creating false monikers, pretending to be from these other ethnic groups and going on to try and cause divisions and enmity within the ethnic group they’re targeting; or using the monikers to heap praises on Buhari/APC while pretending to be from the ethnic group said to be suffering Buharis’. nepotism and vindictiveness! Yes....you do find some Igbo abusing these other ethnicities and maybe even starting unflattering threads about them! But they’re man enough to do it as Igbos and take the flak when it arrives....not wanting to deflect it to others so they and their own ethnic group can emerge unscathed!
Osaze007: See your life 15 storey building and you say your developers
We’re content with it the way it is! Happiness and contentment in life comes with being satisfied with what you have and the strides you’re making against all the odds stacked up against you!
Osaze007: Chai when Ibadan already did 30 floors in 1960s
Igbos are truly behind
Your entire pathetic life revolves around trying to measure dick with Igbos! It appears you measure how well you’re doing in life based on how you match up with Ndigbo!
Officialcartel: World trade center But not yet completed
They’re taking forever to complete that highrise building in Abakaliki! Also, i feel it would have looked better in the new centenary city where the state secretariat is also located!
Eddee: 2 seconds everywhere burst!!! Never to be caught unfresh... Guy men dey pack heat come church on a low. If na for naija the idiot for don waste all the worshippers finish. I need go find my representative for NASS, we all have the right to protect ourselves as at when due.
I think what should be done is allow every church the right to secretly arm at least 5 worshippers for every mass/service! Also, adult church members should be given target practice training! This way, any muderous muthafucker will know he’s on a suicidal mission if he wants to go for a shootout in a church!
All this i-too-sabi knobheads saying this is badly sited and will not yield returns on investment...you lot should mind your business and spare us your ‘caring advice’! If you’re so business savvy then go build your own!
The building is a medical training facility and its quiet location is just perfect!
AstralBody: Without even conducting any interview to gauge the feelings of d people, Biafra has always been on our mind. Any day the UN decides to conduct an election if Nigeria should be divided, many biafrans will vote overwhelmingly for it. The north n Yorubas knows dis, that's why dey don't want it. They Yorubas are just been mischievous, should Nigeria break away today, they won't stay n honor their one Nigeria slogan, they will run away n quickly form their own country
