Can you people give this guy a break. He needs a laptop, he can't afford one and he's here asking for help. Anything wrong with that? Whatever happened to ask and you shall receive? There might be someone out there generous enough to give him an old laptop.

Keep asking brother, one day you shall surely receive.

Happened four years ago. i was trying to explain to this guy some cool stuff you can do with CGI scripts. Out of the blues he asked me what the acronym CGI stands for. My mind completely went blank. He was like, you don't even know the meaning of what you are telling me. I felt and look soooo dumb.

Now, I'm stuck with this screensaver prog. I don't know how to make the prog start on startup, disable any set screensaver (on windows) and on timer elapse, launch the screensaver, which I will save as an exe or powerpoint show (or both). For calling the prog, I tried using [b]execlp and the entire exec family but ot no avail.

You might get help from codeproject. Type 'screen saver' and search by articles.
ProgrammingRe: FORTRAN And COBOL Languages: Are They Obsolete? by Ynot(m): 6:46pm On Jun 02, 2006
please i need to know if FORTRAN and COBOL languages are archiac and obsolete languages. I discovered recently on the internet that there is an object-oriented version of FORTRAN now and a reviewed COBOL version. Please i need to hear from u guys if these languages are still useful to us. Do people really use them to develop applications presently, compared to the more recent languages available?
Yes people/company still use em. You will be surprise to hear that Walmart, Target and most of the big retail stores still use Cobol today.  Its one of the requirement for their in-house programmers. If you have the chance/time to learn fortran or cobol, do it. Thing is, be the best (or at least strive to be) in whatever comp language you are using or decide to use.

ComputersRe: How To Prevent Previous Google Searches From Popping Up by Ynot(m): 11:22pm On Apr 22, 2006
I assume this comes up on google site search and you don't mean google toolbar. If so, then you have autocomplete turned on.

Here is what you need to do: In Internet Explorer, click on the Tools menu --> then on Internet Options --> then on the Content tab --> click on the AutoComplete --> Hit the Clear Forms button. And thats it.

You can also uncheck : web address, forms and user name and password, etc to completely stop autocomplete.

If on the other hand you meant google toolbar, just click on google icon on the explorer and click 'clear search history'. Better yet, click option and set you preference.

Hope this solves your problem.

RomanceRe: How Can You Tell If A Girl Likes You? by Ynot(m): 6:28pm On Apr 17, 2006
This 'ass grabbing' story sound kind of retarded (no pon intended). Seems like you are too young for this (though i wonder how you could be driving a car).

That said, you don't have to see a girl's panties or grab her ass for you to be friends. Let her know you like her and want to be her friend first (how you feel about her) then the ass grabbing stuff and others can occur later.
RomanceRe: Need Help With My Ex! by Ynot(m): 3:04am On Apr 17, 2006
He's probably met another girl in school or totally confused at this point in his life with academic work and all. For him to go as far as asking your dad for his permission to marry you means he was once serious. Give him the benefit of doubt. It could be stress.

I don't think 'giving him a letter' will solve the problem. There is no guarantee he will even bother to read the letter. I suggest you show up at his place with a gift (you should know what he likes) and demand where the relationship is going. You might not like the answer you will get but, at least you know where you stand.

If the answer is in the negative, move on with your life. Otherwise, have a make-up sex (if you're into that) and life goes on.

ComputersRe: First Thing You Do When You Log On To Your Computer by Ynot(m): 5:09am On Apr 16, 2006
You don't even need to reboot your computer. If you browse a lot, always delete your 'temporary internet files' folder to free space on your hard drive.

Windows caches the programs you use frequently in a Prefetch folder. The reason is that Windows XP is configured to prefetch application and program components so that when you load them to memory; it appears to be very quick. When XP boots up, it will prefetch portions of the files you use the most. It loads all associated files, libraries, and pointers necessary to run the program in advance, the preloaded subset makes your system appear quicker.

However, XP will retain a copy of a portion of a program in the prefetch folder even if you only use it one time. Since you may not use the program again, you may impact the performance of your system by having portions of a program you do not use loaded in your system's memory. So, XP systems with very low hardware resources (such as memory and hard disk space) will definitely be affected by an over-bloated prefetch folder.

The solution:

Click Start --> Run --> type Prefetch --> Enter and the prefetch folder will pop up.

Delete the files in this folder except the layout.ini file (its a configuration file used by defrag.exe) and your system will be relatively faster.

You can also disable this in the Windows Registry.

BusinessRe: Does Digital Photography Sell In Nigeria? by Ynot(m): 10:32pm On Apr 15, 2006
You will make sh**t load of money if you plan this well and have enough capital to buy the equipment (quality equipment, that is).

I think there are other big photography companies in some of the big cities. I don't know if they're using digital though. But your focus should be at the universities and/or tertiary institutions.

I've never seen anyone pose for the camera like our brodas and sistas in most of the Nigerian universities. Thats where the cake is. Set up mini studios at the universities and watch as the money start rolling in. You will have the union (i think they have one now) and of course NEPA (or whatever they call em now) to contend with.

Good luck.

Don't turn mine off either. BTW (hot-angel ) there is nuttin wrong leaving your system on. Its meant to be on at all times as long as you have a good cooling system and a firewall (if you are using broadband internet).

PoliticsRe: Nigeria's Problem: Is It The Container Or The Content? by Ynot(m): 6:39am On Apr 15, 2006
Methinks the container is suffocating the content(s). The air inside the container is so stagnant. To make matters worse, the content(s) are always farting. The destruction of the container is therefore imminent. Remold, remake, resharp and if possible, resize it into different shapes.

And thats my 2cents.

TV/MoviesRe: Problematic Nigerian VCD? Rinse With Warm Water! by Ynot(m): 5:16pm On Apr 14, 2006
If the rinsing thing didn't work for you, use toothpaste to solve the scratch problems. Should be used as a last resort as it's a relatively high-abrasive substance.

You can also use Brasso metal polish, auto wax or basically any abrasive compound. Just polish as you would a scratch on your car. The aim should really be only to recover data for reburning not for continued use of the disk.
