InvertedHammer: Doctors in Nigeria deserve to be paid well especially the specialists. My beef is that most of these folks got into M&S because their parents wanted them to be doctors for egotistical reasons.I agree with your point here that Nigeria should train their Doctors well and pay them better. But saying that you believe they are earning what they deserve is absolutely contradictory to your first statement. because that means Nigerians are getting the kind of healthcare that they deserve based on how they treat their Doctors. |
SAPEDRO: it's you who should get yours right. sir, even though there are consultants in that field, but that's what nurse anaesthetists are extensively trained for . in a typical hospital setting say an orthopedic department there's no need to involve a consultant anaesthetist who might not even be available, cos you already have a professional who can handle dat in ur department, which is exactly what people are clamoring for, that the health system is supposed to be a form of team work. They don't!!! They earn a lot more than other nurses but they do NOT earn more than Docs do. Well... Maybe Residents. They sure earn more than residents. |
tete7000: And if other health workers too down their tools, will doctors alone run the hospitals? There will always be rivalry between humans, professions etc. The doctors are fighting to protect their territory which is reasonable. In a normal society, it shouldn't take a strike to get that done. But in Nigeria where through lobbying, anybody can grab at anything (including what they don't deserve) this is what happens. The Health Ministry (just like all other sectors of the Nigerian Government) has failed. That is why we should have leaders who know what they are doing. They should resolve this issue right away. This mess has gone on too long. |
The Ministry of Health and whoever runs it is a failure for allowing this mess!!! |
mintyx: Piece of crap from a biased mind! Who lied to Doctors that they are at the heart or the most importantant in patient care? When they keep spewing all these lies, you'd actually think some of them really care about thier patients. What does everything you just said have to do with the matter at hand ![]() If you care about patient outcomes, you wouldn't reason like this. Like you have rightly said, God is watching!!! |
Suarez actions have kept them in the world cup. Just wait till when he does something that would make his team lose. he'll probably end up dead. South Americans no dey play. Nothing wrong with Nigerians getting angry when our football players do stuff that make us LOSE the game. |
One way to get around such evil pastors is to sue them and send them to jail for murder or attempted murder of the newborn depending on the outcome of the pregnancies where they deceive the ignorant mothers. Nigerians are just so religiously ignorant!!! This is mostly due to poverty and our progressively declining educational system. |
coogar: you are a disgrace to the university that have you your degree. scratch that, you can't even be a doctor with this bottom-level intelligence you have displayed here. |
pmc01: We are still missing the point. You must have been one of the people that went to sleep when poor people's rights are trampled upon. She may have been wrong. But she has a right to her dignity and it was totally classless for our "so called leader" to act in that manner. yeye dey smell. Shior. |

helensharpay: Pls docsFirst, get screened for other STIs. This may not be a yeast infection after all. Yeast usually responds very well to medications, although some people can have re-infections. It sounds like your infection just never went away. Other casues of a v@ginal discharge Possible common causes of a discharge are 1. Neisseria gonorrhea - Requires special cultures. There are rapid tests for diagnosis. I don't know if these are available in Nigeria. 2. Chlamydia trachomatis - Very difficult to culture. There are also rapid antigen tests for this. Don't know about availability in Nigeria 3. Yeast infection - Can be cultured in the right medium. But diagnosis usually doesn't need a culture. Causes white clumps in discharge with itchiness. Can also be diagnosed with just a microscope. 4. Bacterial vaginosis - Not really an STD. Caused by overgrowth of the normal bacteria in the V@gina. Causes a fishy smelling discharge especially during inter.course. 5. Trichomonas v@ginalis - Can be diagnosed in a doctor's office with a microscope All these problems can be treated with antibiotics, but first of all, you need to have a diagnosis. Some of the problems with healthcare in Nigeria is that Doctors and Labs do not have the diagnostic tools needed to make this happen. Does anybody in the house know of labs where some of these tests can be diagnosed? Also, washing up excessively or using antiseptic washes can destroy your normal v@ginal bacteria and this puts you at risk for getting re-infections. Also frequent yeast infections might be a sign of diabetes mellitus because it provides a supply of gllucose which the yeast cells feed on. First, confirm that this is actually a yeast infection, and treat all other co-existing conditions. Get screened for diabetes and only wash down there with regular (not antiseptic) soap. |
Seth24: Pls Doc. I need your advise.Burning sensations may be some sort of nerve pain. The fact that you are having these sensations in multiple sites that are not related to any specific region of the brain or nervous system might mean that it is a systemic problem. Some possibilities are hypothyroidsm, vitamin B1, B6, B12 deficiency, Alcohol neuropathy, Depression, Multiple sclerosis, Diabetes mellitus. You will need to be evaluated for all these possibilities depending on what other symptoms you have and your physical examination findings. |
Debeloved87: MY HEART!!!It sounds like you are having arrhythmias. This is when the normal rhythm of the heart is abnormal. Possible abnormalities include slowing down of the heart (bradyarrhythmia), racing of the heart (tacharrhythmia) or other forms of irregular beats. Whenever the heart is out of rhythm, blood and oxygen is not adequately delivered to our vital organs. This may be why you feel weak. This condition is potentially life threatening and can result in a cardiac arrest. Get in touch with a Cardiologist ASAP. And make sure you do not take any medication without having a diagnosis because medications that are used for the treatment of one arrhythmia can actually worsen another type. You will most likely need to get an EKG and a heart monitor during one of these episodes. Also you may need other blood tests as well as an echocardiogram depending on what you doctor finds. |
Larriclinton: Hello doctor,Prevention is the best medicine. Wear appropriate protective gear. You should have a protective mask to avoid inhaling the chemicals. Also wear non absorptive clothing - "plastic like" clothing to prevent contact of the chemicals on your skin. Because some of these chemicals can be absorbed through the skin. Treatment of chemical poisoning in case of exposure depends on what the chemical is. But just like I said, you need to protect yourself. |
MisterMan: Hi docs,The CT scan report states that she has a swelling inside the bone of her forehead. They didn't state the size, but they say it doesn't extend to involve her brain. From what the radiologist also reported, he doesn't think it could be cancer. The interesting thing about the report is that they listed an osteoma (which is a bony benign growth) as a differential diagnosis. From my knowledge of radiology, a CT scan can clearly differentiate between a bony growth and a soft tissue growth, so they should know if it is bone or not. So, the differential diagnosis is somewhat misleading. There is no way to know for sure why your daughter is having headaches, but because she has that lump on her forehead, which may have grown as she gets older, it is a possible cause. However, anything in the head and neck can cause a headache. e.g visual problems, migraines, dental problems, ear infections, sinusitis(However, the location of the mass in her frontal sinus might make her at risk for recurrent sinusitis). Since you suggested that the lump is slow growing and the CT doesn't show anything life threatening, your decision whether or not to proceed with surgery should depend on - how severe the problem is. If she is having disabling headaches frequently. - how easy the surgery will be (you don't want your daughter to undergo major surgery for a problem that is not life threatening) - how comfortable the surgeon is with removing the lump. Ask politely how many of these conditions he has seen and have him explain the surgery and its possible complications to you. - your concerns about cosmetic implications on your daughter as she grows older. From your description, it doesn't sound like it is a major problem, so I would suggest that you get her eyes checked, avoid reading in poor light or using computers and phones for long periods, make sure she doesn't have any dental problems that might give her headaches. Bottom line, make sure there is nothing else to explain the headaches, if the headaches become bad, go ahead with surgery, but discuss the details of the surgery with your doctor. |
sunny4life: Doctors in the house,i greet all of u and thanks 4 touching lives.May God bless u all.Pls i need an advice concernin the issue i am havin.I hav this boil on my eyelids that has refused to go despite taking some medications like ampiclox and one other drug like that. The boil has been on my eyelids for a very long time.I went to d internet to find out wat it is and i found out that it is a condition called styes.Pls doctors in the house, wat powerful drug can u reccomend for me to solve this problem? Ur advice will b much apreciated......thanks and God bless.Just like you thought, a stye will give you an eyelid swelling. They are caused when some glands around the eyelid get obstructed and then become infected. Infection is usually painful with pus and most times caused by Staph. aureus. This usually responds to antibiotics. A very similar condition is called a chalazion which is caused by occlusion of sebaceous glands in the eyelid. It is a chronic condition (can be present for a long time) and is usually painless or with minimal pain. A chalazion is usually not infected but it also can be infected. If there is no infection, it is usually painless and it doesn't respond to antibiotics. I will guess you are having a chalazion. You can try warm compresses over the swelling up to 4 times a day. If this doesn't work, you might need to visit an ophthalmologist for other treatment options which include steroid injection into the swelling or surgical removal. |
Henry praise: Docs in d huz, please advise:The only way to know if you are having a high body temperature (fever) is by measuring with a thermometer. Normal body temperature is a range of 36.4 to about 37.4. People have different temps, so if your temperature tends to run on the high end of normal, people with lower temperatures will think you are hot. A hand can not measure temperature effectively. However, if you are really having a fever, you need to get checked. The common cause of a fever is an infection. You will be questioned by your doc about the possible causes of your fever. Other problems that can cause fever are hyperthyroidsm or even cancers. About your test.es, that is the normal way they should respond. Whenever the body is warm, the scro.tum moves away from the body and when it is cold, it moves closer t the body. This is because normal sp.erm formation can only happen within a narrow temperature range and the body tries to ensure this by causing the te.stes to move closer to or away from the body. |
Mynd_55: Doctors in the house, I greet you all.Staphylococcus does not cause pen.ile discharge and also doesn't give you noise in your belly. Possible common causes of a discharge in men are 1. Trichomonas - Can be diagnosed in a doctors office with a microscope. Also he may have an infection from other organisms that are not se.xually transmitted, so he would need a urine culture and urinalysis. It is impossible to know what to treat with without the appropriate tests. All these problems can be treated with antibiotics, but first of all, you need to have a diagnosis. If your pe.nile discharge never went away, you probably still have the same infection that was not properly treated. (Chlamydia can be present for many years if not treated) Also, STIs can cause infertility, as well as scarring in the urethra which can eventually cause trouble with urinating. Some of the problems with healthcare in Nigeria is that Doctors and Labs do not have the diagnostic tools needed to make this happen. A question for Med lab scientists in the house - Do you know of labs that can diagnose these in Nigeria? The Doctor was going somewhere, so he couldn't answer your questions And was he paid for his service? We (Nigerians) have to see healthcare as a service that it is, or else things will never improve. Pay for the service you get and also ensure that you are getting the QUALITY that you pay for. |
Ariyke: Doctors in the house pls I need help av been enduring menstrual pain ever since I started my period for the past 10yrs dunno what to do, av used a lot of medicines but still same and I always see blood stain days before my period starts pls helpDysmenorrhea is very common and a very good treatment is NSAIDs like Ibuprofen, Naproxen. Sometimes, birth control pills are used in appropriate candidates. Also, there may be medical conditions that cause dysmenorrhea like endometriosis or an infection. An infection is very unlikely since you have been having this for 10 years. Speak to a gynecologist who may be able to offer you more options for treatment. I have posted a web resource that can give you a little bit more info here http://my.clevelandclinic.org/disorders/dysmenorrhea/hic_dysmenorrhea.aspx |
akwete: Please Doctor Balogun, if you are to advice someone to treat staphylococcus aureus, herself or himself, which treated would you advice that person to go through. Is it Tradomedical or through doctors precriptions? Please I need your reply sir.I have no idea about "Tradomedical" Staph. aureus has been abused as the cause of so many things. A lot of these are bogus. Staph aureus usually causes soft tissue infections and usually causes pus. Like infections of the skin or other tissue spaces. Can also infect bones if you are at risk. Infections caused by staph aureus in the skin is very common. It is a common cause of boils and actually, a lot of people carry Staph. aureus on their skin and also in their nostrils without it causing them any infection. Deeper infections that involve bone or blood can be life threatening depending on how deep the infection goes. So, what symptoms are you having and maybe I will be able to suggest whether it could be Staph aureus or not. |
babe01: thank u sir, am having discharge and it smears that's why my doc ask me to do the pap smear. But I also did scan which says left ovarian cyst, but I dnt know if it is the cyst that is causing the discharge.Common causes of v@ginal discharge in women Possible common causes of a discharge are 1. Neisseria gonorrhea - Requires special cultures. There are rapid tests for diagnosis. I don't know if these are available in Nigeria. 2. Chlamydia trachomatis - Very difficult to culture. Some of the problems with healthcare in Nigeria is that Doctors and Labs do not have the diagnostic tools needed to make this happen. Does anybody in the house know of labs where some of these tests can be diagnosed? Also ovarian cysts in women of child bearing age are very common. They are usually called simple cysts, and the radiologist that reviewed your ultrasound would have made a comment about it if the cyst was concerning for Ovarian cancer. But like I said, it probably has nothing to do wth the discharge. A quick advice I can give here is that if you have been washing up excessively or using antiseptic washes, that may be your problem. You end up destroying the normal bacteria down there which can result in certain infections or even cause chemical irritation resulting in a discharge. So, first get the appropriate tests to rule out an STI, then consider other possibilities. |
Lisajoe: Please am underweight, any prescription on how to gain weight? The only prescription in order to gain weight is food. Medications should not be used inappropriately. However, there may be reasons why people lose weight or are unable to gain weight. Commonest reason is genetic. It just might run in your family. What is your diet like? How old are you? What is your BMI - Body mass index? Occasionally, medical conditions (which are treatable) can cause weight loss e.g hyperthyroidsm, depression, Tuberculosis, Cancer. I am not suggesting that you might have any of these, but if you have any symptoms that concern you, go speak with a doctor. |
Jhaay-Young:A discharge with urination in men is usually an infection. Usually a Se.xu@lly transmitted infection. I listed some common causes earlier. habib55: the great doc,pls have bn having movment around my left kidney with ocational pain around my left flank,i was diagnos of kidney inflamation, after taken sum drugs given 2 me with little relief,i was told dat d inflamation has gone,bt d pain and vibrition around my left kidney stil remains, pls help me.It is almost impossible to make any diagnosis with the information you have given. So many things can cause pain around your left side. It may not even have anything to do with your kidneys. Do you have any other symptoms beside the pain? Fever? Urinating frequently, painful urination? Blood in your urine? Diarrhea, Constipation? Make an appointment and go talk to your doctor who will then be able to advise you on what tests you might need. |
SLEEMYDRIZ: thanks alot Ziga..pls what am i to do now..leave them like thatIf they become infected, it may become very painful and you might need antibiotics as well as drainage of the "boil". The treatment is just like boils in other parts of the body. But it sounds like you have had these for a while now. So for you, I would advice that you see a surgeon to assess the severity. Also, these may not even be boils like you think. In medicine, there are very many things that look alike. |

This is called oligospermia. Take note however that only 1 sperm is required to produce a pregnancy. I assume you had the test done as a work up for infertility. Infertility is a complicated problem because 2 people are involved. With your result showing low sperm count, your chances may be lower, but i t doesn't mean that you can not father a child. You will need to coordinate with your Doctor, who will determine if there may be other factors in your partner that could cause infertility. |
babe01: Hello doc, please what does this result mean and how do i treat myselfA PAP smear is used to diagnose possible cancer of the cervix. And yours states "Negative for Intra-epithelial Lesion or Malignancy". THis is a norrmal report. The background of mild inflammation could be clinically significant or not. If you have any other symptoms that you are concerned about, you can let us know and somebody will suggest something. |
SLEEMYDRIZ: pls docs in the hus....am havin this things like boils in my anus region sumtime its pains me but later dey wil jst b there without pains ..buh they increases form 1 now am seein like 4 spot....what is d cause nd hw can i go abt it...thanksBoils in the anal region are actually very common. That part of the body has sebaceous gland that sometimes gets blocked and infected due to lots of bacteria in that region. It is kinda like pimples on the face from blockage of the same gland. However, whenever you are having recurrences, you need to pay special attention to your hygiene in that area. If you have also been shaving around that area, you need to stop because it will put you at a higher risk of infections there. In some very problematic cases, with severe infections, surgery can be done to remove some of these glands. |
