Kobojunkie:
Let me INSERT some more WARPED logic into what you have above @9jaganja.

a) A 50lb Bag of Garri costs about $36 on average in America. The same costs almost twice in Nigeria.
b) An Acre of Land in America averages N170,000 Nigerian Money, while the same Acre could run you up to and even more than N4 000,000 in Nigeria. What has that to do with this though? How does exchange rate deal with the discrepancy in this?
I doubt that the garri talk is correct.

About the land price, many factors affect its price. Therefore, you have to balance for those factors e.g. city where it is located. Therefore, land price will not be a good example.

Absolutely spot on , I never quoted education standards but the cost of education.

Many Nigerian children will beat their UK counterparts hands down in academics.

But help here :

1. Many of these highly intelligent children graduate with good degrees and then languish on the streets looking for jobs simply because they have no connection. This enrages me.

2. Some of the best education in Naija costs so much that the average man cannot afford it, and thus they are shut out from excellent teaching and good educational material.

3. Our universities now produce cultists and very few seasoned graduates.

4. The corrupt politician seeing the state of education in Naija,  frequently send their wives and children abroad for A levels and university degrees.

Surely UI, Unife, Unilag, UNN, these universities are some of the potential best worldwide but have been left to decay and rot.

This is precisely my point that the Goverment at all levels MUST step in and address these urgent issues.

The youth of today are our future tomorrow, if they are neglected today, what hopes do we have as a nation ?
i agree with your points.

We still have a long way to go.

I just raised the issue because many make us believe that absolutely nothing good ever comes out of Nigeria.

You've come with your deception and Propaganda!

I've recommended you return to the Tribalist section ASAP.
Literacy has nothing to do with going to school.

These are the kind of politicians we have in Nigeria. They will threaten you to keep shut, and if you don't they kill you.

These are the people that have completely corrupted our system.

These are the people we need out of our political system.

Typical 'Ostrich' hiding your head under the sand hoping that by some magical way or the other, Nigeria will become a great nation, lol.

Tell me is it too much to assess Nigeria in terms of providing the basic foundation and infrastructure for a sustainable livelihood.

Obviously you are miles away in the UK with no intent of going back home. If home was so great why not pack your bags and go and live there.

Are you not enjoying the English man's good roads, constant water and electric, efficient waste removal system, free education etc ?

KEEP Rambling.
Not many places in the world where education is "freer" than it is in Nigeria.

A lot of people will say our educational standards are poor, but i know that we produce Nigerian graduates that compete excellently with their peers from different parts of the world.

@poster

What criteria was used in arriving @ th current failed state index.

A lot of statistical studies can have different problems with it, so like many have said, it doesn't make sense to "swallow" these things without really looking at what went on behind the scenes.

But anyway, I agree Nigeria has its many problems that need to be solved.

BTW, What are the consequences of Nigeria being a failed state?

Do we all migrate to the non-failed states? or we get removed from ECOWAS, Commonwealth etc? or we get weekly donations from other states?

Someone on a different thread inferred that a big problem with us Nigerians is that we love self pity, and we spend 90% of our time blaming each other for a problem and 10% of the time looking for a solution.
PoliticsRe: State Police To Be Or Not? by ziga: 9:20pm On Apr 03, 2010
@onlytruth

You should consider the mentality of the average Nigerian. We just love to make boundaries when there's no reason to. And we will never admit that a person is wrong as long as he belongs in my camp/state/ethnic grp. This affects almost every Nigerian. I see it on N/land daily. It affects our politics. That is why we have some states having a different legal system. That is why it is taking forever to empower th VP.

State police puts so much power in the hands of people like this.

So, who makes the rules for each state police to follow. I believe it has to be the state legislators. With the people in charge having this kind of mentality, this will eventually result in misuse of the state police for selfish gains.

Imagine the last ethnic/religious disturbance. If the people in charge of the state police are loyal to one of the warring groups, we can imagine what the outcome will be. Eventually, we will have states that operate their own bizarre laws, and i bet you will not be able to go to some states if they have that much freedom/power.

Your points are very good one. However, the people that are complaining do not just wish to complain. We are FED-UP with the "operation rich syndrome with the masses money".
If you leave in Nigeria, may I ask you some question: What is the benefit of almost 20% tax on income of individuals? When last do you have electricity in your house? Do you have access to clean water as it suppose to be? Do you ever give a thought over the education of the masses if you have more than enough to send your wards to private schools or schools oversea? Of what value will more tax bring to the people with the present set of Leaders? I leave you to think deeply more on why the people are complaining. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!
I understand your concerns, but the points i was raising is completely different.

I was saying, if the money collected is used for its original purpose, that might be a good thing(well maintained roads).

Sometimes, we just need to be a little positive and we may get good things. But if the only thought you have about everything is bad, then you'll only get the bad.

There is power in your thought and speech.

I understand your sentiments about multiple taxation. But that is a different problem that also needs to be addressed.

The issue i was addressing was the usefulness of th toll levies. And i said collecting toll fees will not be a bad thing if it is actually used for road maintenance.

Or are you suggesting that the sanitation levies you complained about should be used for road maintenance.

By the way, I'll be sure to pass ur message along to my dad.

Change has to start from the top as government has to be responsible in enforcing and implementing law and order. We can not police ourselves.
And what you are saying is utter rightness.

We just love to be self righteous. Blame everything else but ourselves.

I think if the buses are put to good use, they will help a lot of students. Even if its for a short time. However, the educational system in Naija, needs a lot more.

2. Plz i'm avin a catarrh, i've tried procold bt it's stil dere plz recomend a drug 4 me
Thankz
I hope your catarrh has improved by now. Normally, viral infections take about a week to resolve even without treatment. Sometimes, they may take longer. Procold will give you symptomatic relief. So, in case of another infection, you can take vitamins to improve your immunity, drink lots of water to prevent dehydration, analgesics for relief of headaches/fever, any nasal decongestant and of course adequate rest to allow the bod time to heal itself.

About your sleep, i'm sure you know that playing video games, together with the light from your monitor/tv screen will send signals to your brain to keep your body alert. This will definitely affect your sleep at night. So, stay off video games, especially at night.

Read more about sleep hygeine. http://www.umm.edu/sleep/sleep_hyg.htm

Some of the rules are hard to follow, but weall realize that most good things don't come without a sacrifice.

Goodluck.

PoliticsRe: Fg To Reintroduce Toll Gates, Fuel Tax by ziga: 3:52pm On Mar 31, 2010
For once, why can't look for the good thing in some initiatives.

The ministry of works is trying to generate money for road maintenance - great

They intend to do this by rebuilding toll plazas - also good, only thing i notice, just like a lot of other people is we shouldn't be going back and forth. First, we destroyed, and now we are rebuilding. On the other hand, since the fuel tax was cancelled by the court of appeal, this is acceptable.

What we need to do, rather than condemn is to look for ways this can work for us.

What use is condemning if you can't suggest something better.

My contribution is, for this to work, it has to be 100% transparent, no corrupt practices.

Also, i believe we can make the card system work for us. It will help with accountability.

No electricity, but GSM operators are working!!! When there is a will, there is always a way.

what i think is that people are praising him too much thereby distracting him and i think we should watch him more. I bet you were comparing Nigeria to 3rd world countries. But u should realize that normal things happen in normal places.

With the current state of Lagos, a state of emergency should be declared. And in those circumstances, we need methods that are harsher than normal.

Please don't blame the methods of Governor BRF, he is just trying to patch up what has been broken for many years.

And i say he's making good progress.

It doesn't matter to me how many pieces Nigeria is broken up into. There are many small countries in the world.

But if dividing is not targeting and removing the cause of our problems, then why are we wasting our time.

I still have not seen how dividing will remove the problems we face or how it will make Nigerians less corrupt and hypocritical.

Kobojunkie:
I have to respond to this one here. . . .

Why is it that we PICK AND CHOOSE, when most convenient for us, WHERE TO APPLY the above? Would you also apply the above to the situation with Yar adua? Iwu? Sanusi? Other state governors?

I think the problem with what you have above is you assume that choosing to ASK QUESTIONS OF GOVERNMENT, or CRITICIZE government IMPLIES TARGETTING GOVERNMENT. Is that the case here?

Criticism, Questions, etc have been part of most all systems from the get go. Yes, We have systems that ACTIVELY work to quell opposition/dissenting opinions of any kind, but NOTE- it is NOT the case that these opinions do not exist at all but that they are being put down in these systems.

What we have is a democracy, and we have had it for about 10 years now. One of the advantages of fundamentals of a democracy is that the people have a say in government. So, no matter what type of democracy you want to have, it is fundamental that the people be alongside government. IF NOT, it ceases to be a democracy and can then be defined as some other system of rule but democracy. So, I disagree with what you have above there. There is NO REASON why government SHOULD NOT provide people with information about how Government runs. NO EXCUSE IS GOOD ENOUGH IN THIS CASE. The almighty Nigerian excuse CANNOT be used, even in this case to justify SILENCE on the part of the government.
I'm so sorry that you misunderstand my point like i thought.

Talking about picking and choosing, who is picking and choosing? You are selectively attacking the only government that has been trying to even listen to the people because he has been listening?

If we choose not to pick and choose, then the same agents spreading these allegations should go dig up the affairs of every politician in office and lay it out on the table. That will be true democracy.

@doyin13

I have a lot of hope in Naija. Change doesn't happen all of a sudden. It happens in stages. Go ask the man who has been walking for years in the desert why he hasn't had a bath. The standards of Democracy in Nigeria and many other countries is not where it should be, and it will take a while for us to get there.

And BRF is moving in the right direction.
PoliticsRe: Governor Fashola And The Lekki Toll Road Scam by ziga: 8:40pm On Mar 28, 2010
All these talk reminds of the animal kingdom.

Hyenas never attack the big bold lion who roars real loud,

they never attack the elephant coz of its size.

Instead, they go for the little animal, because they perceive it as weak.

True democracy is perfection, and Nigeria will eventually get there, but while we are on our way there, we shouldn't mistake people who try to be different from the rest by doing "good" as being weak.

Pls before you reply. take note that i'm not making a case for corruption, i'm just saying that all systems (even democracy) have to be adapted to the current situation in the place where it is being practiced.

And the current situation in Nigeria is far from perfect. So someone who is moving towards the ideal situation can be easily assumed as easy target for the idealists. But targeting the "good" people will not make anything better.
