Kobojunkie:I doubt that the garri talk is correct. About the land price, many factors affect its price. Therefore, you have to balance for those factors e.g. city where it is located. Therefore, land price will not be a good example. |
And what if we are the richest in the world. What next ![]() Please move to "kids arguing about size of father's car" section |
frosbel:i agree with your points. We still have a long way to go. I just raised the issue because many make us believe that absolutely nothing good ever comes out of Nigeria. |
Sun of god:Literacy has nothing to do with going to school. These are the kind of politicians we have in Nigeria. They will threaten you to keep shut, and if you don't they kill you. These are the people that have completely corrupted our system. These are the people we need out of our political system. |
Sun of god:It hurts me to say, but you sound like absolute unintelligent, uncultured trash!!! You, like many of our politicians do not think before you type/talk. We blame politicians for everything, but you are an example of why we are ranked 15th on the failed state index. |
frosbel:Not many places in the world where education is "freer" than it is in Nigeria. A lot of people will say our educational standards are poor, but i know that we produce Nigerian graduates that compete excellently with their peers from different parts of the world. |
@poster What criteria was used in arriving @ th current failed state index. A lot of statistical studies can have different problems with it, so like many have said, it doesn't make sense to "swallow" these things without really looking at what went on behind the scenes. But anyway, I agree Nigeria has its many problems that need to be solved. BTW, What are the consequences of Nigeria being a failed state? Do we all migrate to the non-failed states? or we get removed from ECOWAS, Commonwealth etc? or we get weekly donations from other states? Someone on a different thread inferred that a big problem with us Nigerians is that we love self pity, and we spend 90% of our time blaming each other for a problem and 10% of the time looking for a solution. |
@onlytruth You should consider the mentality of the average Nigerian. We just love to make boundaries when there's no reason to. And we will never admit that a person is wrong as long as he belongs in my camp/state/ethnic grp. This affects almost every Nigerian. I see it on N/land daily. It affects our politics. That is why we have some states having a different legal system. That is why it is taking forever to empower th VP. State police puts so much power in the hands of people like this. So, who makes the rules for each state police to follow. I believe it has to be the state legislators. With the people in charge having this kind of mentality, this will eventually result in misuse of the state police for selfish gains. Imagine the last ethnic/religious disturbance. If the people in charge of the state police are loyal to one of the warring groups, we can imagine what the outcome will be. Eventually, we will have states that operate their own bizarre laws, and i bet you will not be able to go to some states if they have that much freedom/power. |
civil war ko, civil war ni? Well, i can't blame the journalist. That was his point of view. And, i don't agree with his on the brink of a civil war conspiracy! |
otawa:Thanks jor. This is greed induced. |
@ikengawo I love your analysis. A lot of people might not see things that way coz they have clouded their eyes with sentiments. Nigeria needs more detribalized people or else, we will keep looking back and never move forward. |
Niger_d:If what you say is true, then i suggest you change the title of your thread. |
Ceedorf:I understand your concerns, but the points i was raising is completely different. I was saying, if the money collected is used for its original purpose, that might be a good thing(well maintained roads). Sometimes, we just need to be a little positive and we may get good things. But if the only thought you have about everything is bad, then you'll only get the bad. There is power in your thought and speech. |
agitator:I understand your sentiments about multiple taxation. But that is a different problem that also needs to be addressed. The issue i was addressing was the usefulness of th toll levies. And i said collecting toll fees will not be a bad thing if it is actually used for road maintenance. Or are you suggesting that the sanitation levies you complained about should be used for road maintenance. By the way, I'll be sure to pass ur message along to my dad. |
FL Gators:I've noticed this trend too. Nothing is ever done right, except they are the ones doing it. Over sabi dey worry us. |
GenBuhari:And what you are saying is utter rightness. We just love to be self righteous. Blame everything else but ourselves. Don't tell me you are one of the irresponsible ones among us who never does the right thing but expects the people in power to magically right all the wrongs. |
I don't understand how providing buses for transportation to Nigerian universities is perceived as a bad thing by Nairalanders. Anyway, @post I think if the buses are put to good use, they will help a lot of students. Even if its for a short time. However, the educational system in Naija, needs a lot more. |
1stknight:I hope your catarrh has improved by now. Normally, viral infections take about a week to resolve even without treatment. Sometimes, they may take longer. Procold will give you symptomatic relief. So, in case of another infection, you can take vitamins to improve your immunity, drink lots of water to prevent dehydration, analgesics for relief of headaches/fever, any nasal decongestant and of course adequate rest to allow the bod time to heal itself. About your sleep, i'm sure you know that playing video games, together with the light from your monitor/tv screen will send signals to your brain to keep your body alert. This will definitely affect your sleep at night. So, stay off video games, especially at night. Read more about sleep hygeine. http://www.umm.edu/sleep/sleep_hyg.htm Some of the rules are hard to follow, but weall realize that most good things don't come without a sacrifice. Goodluck. |
Mordayz:The only method i know of is surgical reduction. |
I bet you there are lots of people who are with you on this. LONG LIVE NIGERIANS!!! |
For once, why can't look for the good thing in some initiatives. The ministry of works is trying to generate money for road maintenance - great They intend to do this by rebuilding toll plazas - also good, only thing i notice, just like a lot of other people is we shouldn't be going back and forth. First, we destroyed, and now we are rebuilding. On the other hand, since the fuel tax was cancelled by the court of appeal, this is acceptable. What we need to do, rather than condemn is to look for ways this can work for us. What use is condemning if you can't suggest something better. My contribution is, for this to work, it has to be 100% transparent, no corrupt practices. Also, i believe we can make the card system work for us. It will help with accountability. No electricity, but GSM operators are working!!! When there is a will, there is always a way. |
What kind of idiotic journalism is this. Us government in diplomatic row with Naija over RENTED apartment or road construction. And am sure this will generate an argument about how useless the Naija government is on Nairaland. Naija problems permeates every sector. Even journalism Even nollywood can come up with better stories. Rubbish. |
I support. Brilliant idea!!! |
phacooh:I bet you were comparing Nigeria to 3rd world countries. But u should realize that normal things happen in normal places. With the current state of Lagos, a state of emergency should be declared. And in those circumstances, we need methods that are harsher than normal. Please don't blame the methods of Governor BRF, he is just trying to patch up what has been broken for many years. And i say he's making good progress. |
I can't believe you are real. |
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ You make it sound like the only colors in life are black and white. Especially in Nigerian democracy, at this time we have a lot of grey. I don't expect you to agree with me. |
It doesn't matter to me how many pieces Nigeria is broken up into. There are many small countries in the world. But if dividing is not targeting and removing the cause of our problems, then why are we wasting our time. I still have not seen how dividing will remove the problems we face or how it will make Nigerians less corrupt and hypocritical. |
Lots of nairalanders are just like the politicians we have in naija. During an argument, we choose a side that identifies with our agenda and throw principles into the air. I see a lot of people talking 2 different things from both sides of their mouth. |
We have a fraudulent system of governance, therefore, even "good" people use fraudulent means to get things done. Offering and receiving bribes is very common. But, before you start throwing stones, come spend some time in Nigeria and lets see how you will fare. |
Well, i always try as much as possible to be realist. So, to all pro-true democracy peeps in the house, take your case to EFCC, house of assembly. Nairaland won't help you much. |
Kobojunkie:I'm so sorry that you misunderstand my point like i thought. Talking about picking and choosing, who is picking and choosing? You are selectively attacking the only government that has been trying to even listen to the people because he has been listening? If we choose not to pick and choose, then the same agents spreading these allegations should go dig up the affairs of every politician in office and lay it out on the table. That will be true democracy. @doyin13 I have a lot of hope in Naija. Change doesn't happen all of a sudden. It happens in stages. Go ask the man who has been walking for years in the desert why he hasn't had a bath. The standards of Democracy in Nigeria and many other countries is not where it should be, and it will take a while for us to get there. And BRF is moving in the right direction. |
All these talk reminds of the animal kingdom. Hyenas never attack the big bold lion who roars real loud, they never attack the elephant coz of its size. Instead, they go for the little animal, because they perceive it as weak. True democracy is perfection, and Nigeria will eventually get there, but while we are on our way there, we shouldn't mistake people who try to be different from the rest by doing "good" as being weak. Pls before you reply. take note that i'm not making a case for corruption, i'm just saying that all systems (even democracy) have to be adapted to the current situation in the place where it is being practiced. And the current situation in Nigeria is far from perfect. So someone who is moving towards the ideal situation can be easily assumed as easy target for the idealists. But targeting the "good" people will not make anything better. |
