Listen to what the reporter said, anything between 4-7 million live here, and we have not even started counting other slums.

If you note, he said 4 to 7 million live here, depending on who you speak to.

I guess he must have got his information from some government agency that doesn't even know the true population of Lagos. We all know that population figures in Nigeria have always been a big fraud.

Well, if 4 - 7 million people truly live in Ajegunle, then Lagos population will be closer to 25 million people. if you have lived in Lagos recently, you will understand  know what i mean.

Don't call our homes slum, its just medieval architecture with a beach front each time there is a little shred of rainfall

Well, if that is your home, then i can feel your pain.

But i don't agree that the situation is the same with 11 million Lagosians.

So, in your eyes, these random pics have proven that 11 million of Lagos population live in slums??

How many developing countries have animal rights.

Or cock fights in the far east.

We have other priorities that need urgent attention and someone is saying animal rights.

The number of fraudstars you have in NY alone is more than what we have in Nigeria both home and abroad yet Americans are not known for fraud. Who is cheating who. All those pharma(Viagra) online BSC,MSC Phd under 3 weeks you get on daily basis are they from Nigerians? Are they not frauds?. You guys should stop shooting yourself thinking that you are doing Oyibos favour. A british guy was executed or sent to life in China last yrs, does that make all brits drug dealers?.

If brit tell me Nigerians are fraudstar/drug dealers i will tell him brits are cheaters, drug peddlers and drug adicts(crack head).

Yeah brits and yanks are saints.
I agree with you totally.

We should speak out against the bad, but we should never stand for the stoopid generalizations.

I think saying "yes, Nigerians are bad, but i am not one of the bad guys" to your friends is extremely selfish, we should say "Yes, we have bad guys, but we also have good guys"

They are essentially the same thing said in different ways.

With hope things will not always be like this for Nigeria, but the negative stereotypes you create now will last a lifetime.

or else, someday in the future, we will all feel the sting of the seeds we sow today, by all the careless statements we make.

@everybody

This thread is not about government developments or whatever.

BBC just told a big LIE.

11 million people. Haba.

Lagos should be in the guiness book of world records for world's largest slum.

And did i still hear someone defining a slum as open drainshuh

Simple deduction. Its in the poor sanitation part of any slum definition you find.
One factor does not translate to a slum. And like you said "it is part of the definition of slum".

If we go by your rules, poor sanitation = slum.

You live in Lagos yet you don't know what is going on around you, what a pity, i challenge you to go around this saturday after environmental, check the houses around you and see if they don't have wells, boreholes and sulk-away, then come back here and tell us your findings.

Any house with a sulk-away have WS toilets.
I'm trying to understand your point.

I did not say that homes without these facilities do not exist.

But for you to agree that 11 million people live in homes like these is ridiculous.

Hi OP

Can you provide an official link as evidence of what the BBC actually said please. I doubt they would make such a statement without having hardcore stats to back it up.

Out of all the houses in Lagos, how many actually have running water, a flushing toilet, good drainage system?  huh
Well, from the stats we have here, the answer is less than 5 million.

The unfortunate 11 million get water from wells, S.hit in latrines and empty their waste into the streets.

I lived in Lagos most of my life, and this is a BIG lie.

But if they say we all live in slums, who are we to argue.

Our almighty masters have spoken, and we must all stay silent and shiver.

What is wrong with Nigerians? angry In other countries, they would ask serious questions about vast areas could be so primitive.

Many people don't even realise that any area that has open gutters is a slum; fit only for animals.

Yes, BBC have an agenda, but they arent inventing stuff to use against us. Its right there for each and every one of us to see, but we bleeping don't care about each other! How can places like Makoko even exist? How? In a modern country? How? Nigeria as it currently is organised, is a cruel country. Some are thinking about how the Nigerian govt will retaliate. . . Una no get shame? No be only "retaliate"! Make una go United Nations! Rubbish!

If you go to any market in a small country like Jamaica, you will find that every peace of meat for sale bears a govt stamp. If you sell meat that isn't stamped, you go to jail (because, for goodness sake, you could be selling poison). Every piece of meat is sold by weight. The food inspectors are very neatly dressed and take pride in their work. Guess what?. . . Jamaica makes far less money than some Nigerian states.
Has any of you seen the way cattle are slaughtered and meat sold in Nigeria? shocked

Damn all of you who are feeling slighted that the BBC has filmed things that are evident to each and every one of us. We see these things and do nothing, is that BBC's fault to?
If you regularly droppings in a field and someone decides to film you; do you have the right to complain? "Oh, imagine! They actually didn't even check to see how nice my house is, the only thing that bothers them is that I droppings in the field!" . . .Anyway, I'll leave you with this photo of Jamaican police (now imagine 9ja police hanging from pickups without headlamps and demanding "roger" at road blocks).
And by who's definition is this.

If that is the case over half of the whole world live in slums.

PoliticsRe: Where Is Dr Abalaka? by ziga: 10:44am On Apr 23, 2010
It is obvious that Dr Abalaka's claims from back then were untrue.

And the problems he had with the government and the health ministry was that he was unprofessional in his approach.

You don't make an experimental drug and start injecting human volunteers. Drug tests have to pass through stages, which he totally ignored (animal testing and all) So, he was taking advantage of the hopeless situation of the HIV infected patients, giving them false hope, and preventing them from going for other proven methods of treatment.

And so far, anybody who doesn't understand will never understand.

Blood is not a normal content of semen,  It sounds like it could be an infection.

Are you sexually active? How many partners? Unprotected intercourse?

Go see a doctor who will be able to evaluate other symptoms that you may be having. e.g pain during e.jaculation, discharge from your urethra.
Samples of your urine, or any discharge you might have may/ may not be collected, and you may need antibiotics.

If you live in Nigeria, kindly use your perception to convert the Lagos Airport Road into a bump less one and use perception to dissolve the armed robbers at your door.

Because some people can now go to the Palms (never mind they are a tiny fraction of the population) that should be the governing perception of Nigeria, not the awful daily realities faced by the majority of the people.  Perception indeed. The more I see posts like these, the stronger the hypocrisy appears.
What exactly is your point. Nobody is denying the state of the International airport road. Even if it is fixed today, it will still have potholes tomorrow. The solution to the road problems will be stability in the Government and good policies.

The perception i am talking about is that i see that progress is being made whereas, you can't see anything good.

Please, let go of your emotions and lets try to be objective when we criticize.

Is your main grouse how the ECO is going to look at you? huh

ok - let's even accept that for a moment - WHY isn't there more news about the so called 'life in abundance' that is going on in Nigeria? We've seen stories of a new South Africa, we've seen stories of a new Ghana, but Nigeria continues to be covered by killings, worsening infrastructure and other ills.

You have to be in denial to fail to recognise the WORSENING of the living conditions of the majority of Nigerians. The fact that the minority who hold most of the wealth are enjoying 'life in abundance' doesn't change the sorry state of things in general.

Perception is NOT the problem. Land in Lagos and the Airport Road is a disgrace - is the road really bad or just my perception? Is the fact that we don't have security and we don't have power a matter of perception?? While Ghana has had years of uninterrupted power we can't still generate enough for basic household consumption never mind industrial and this is a matter of perception??
We choose to see what we want to see. Its all a matter of perception.

There are quite a few African countries that are not mentioned in the same light as Nigeria by foreign media e.g. Ghana. Are these media favorites? What did they do to earn it? Or rather, how much did they pay to get it - for those that think that's the only way it can happen.
If they are to talk about Africa, what other country do you think they will talk about.

In terms of our number alone we represent a great percentage of Africa. The name Nigeria is known worldwide, and if you want to create amusement, you will always pick a name people will recognize with.

Giant or dwarf of Africa,  we will always be under the spotlight.
