You don't get it. Everyone can not be a writer. Why is Achebe not a surgeon?
You choose a profession for whatever reasons. But we judge you based on your output. Achebe output is disppointing, shameful and nothing to write home about.

Achebe is nothing more than David Beckham in football. He was over hyped by the British but ended up not winning a single worthwhile award.
Why? Because the world saw through the propaganda. Achebe is thoroughly and completely over hyped.

Ummm the mere fact that Chief Obafemi Awolowo said such words is an indictment on his actions during the war.

People can defend him all they want, but his words have been etched in stone.

Let us be rational.

Here are the words of Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

"All is fair in war, and starvation is one of the weapons of war. I don’t see why we should feed our enemies fat in order for them to fight harder."

That seems like a violation of the Geneva Convention and also a violation of the Nuremberg principles.

Sincere 9gerian: If what Achebe wrote is the TRUTH, then why shouldn't he tell the TRUTH? Why do some persons want him to hide the TRUTH? That someone says it as it is does not mean the person is still ANGRY or BITTER. The TRUTH is the TRUTH and the TRUTH can never be late in coming. So SORRY if it offended some Yoruba persons or any other person but the TRUTH should not be withheld because it will offend some persons. Again the TRUTH may be RIGHT or WRONG depending on your side of the divide or your understanding of issues. To some persons it is right to use starvation as weapon of war but to others it is an ATROCIOUS act. In the opinion of Achebe and some other persons, it is WRONG but in the opinion of others, including the Late Chief Awo, it is RIGHT. Such is life. But bottomline is was starvation used as weapon of war during the Nigerian civil war? Yes! Was Late Awo the driver of such policy? Yes! Was late Awo interested in becoming president of Nigeria after decimating the 'enemy'? Yes! Was Achebe right in documenting these TRUTHS in his book for posterity sake? I think yes. FOR THE INFORMATION OF ALL, not ALL weapons of war are acceptable or 'fair'. That is the reason you have the red cross and UN to deliver food to the civillian population even in the period of war. Also it is unacceptable to use certain cluster bombs during war or bomb certain targets during war. Again Igbos did not declare war on Nig rather it was Nigeria that attacked Igbo homeland after the east seceded due to massacre of Igbos in the north

Well said!!!

The only Nigerian with GCFR without being a president. The man whose picture is on the currency you spend.
The man who won civil war for Nigeria without borrowing a kobo. The man who formulated the policies that brought Biafra to her knees.
The man who built the first TV station in Africa, the first social security system in Africa.
The man who conceptualize the institution known as OAU today.
A man who built industrial estates in Western Nigeria. A man who introduced the very first free education policy in Nigeria.

A man who was a family man to the call. He had just one wife! a faithful husband, an astute organiser, a political wizard, a fearless sage,

My people, you don't have a need to join issues with these Yorobbers. The fear of an Ibo man is the begining of wisdom.

With £20 of thief Awo's policies we have bounced back stronger. The Ibos own most of the choice properties in Lagos and still counting all over Lagos state buying their properties and sending them to Ofada, Ikorodu, Badagary. God has given us Lagos and very soon all yorobbers will be tanants to Ibos in Lagos.

You can't stop a moving train brother. Lagos will be fully owned by Ibos in the next few years. There is nothing you guys can do about it. They war will soon begin and you will be sent to Benin Rep.

You can only be jealous and nothing you can do about it.

Re: Achebe’s Biafra Memoir Stirs Controversy by Nobody: 9:17pm On Oct 06, 2012
Why can't people be realistic & honest for once.

A coup took place in 1966 january, unfortunately for the fact that the cunning colonial masters handed power to the fulani northerners cos they believed they can be easily remoted by them to get economic favors for the British.

The northerners saw the 1966 coup as a religious/tribal attack on them as they always see everything, & launched a counter-coup using a false christian man, Gowon as a cannonfolder. In the counter-coup, lots of Igbo military officers lost their lives, including the first Nigerian military head of state, Gen. Aguiyi Ironsi (he was killed cos of his quest to bring Nigerians together after the 1966 coup, if he had reasoned like the tribalistic/jihadist northerners, he wouldn't have died).

As if that was not enough, the jihadist northerners after they succeeded in bringing down the govt. of Gen. Aguiyi, began a mass killing of Ndigbo living innocently/peacefully in their northern land, that was the first pogrom in Nigeria.

Now people who claim they have conscience & know God, still supported this mass killing of Ndigbo just because Ndigbo were more economically vibrant than other tribes then.

This killing escalated to almost all northern states, Ojukwu got so worried, & being a man who always stood against injustice (remember when he slapped a white headmaster when he was just a boy for flogging a Nigerian, Ojukwu hate human mistreatment), called out to his people; Ndigbo to come back to their homeland of South-Eastern Nigeria so they can live on their own & flee from the inhumane treatment given to them by other Nigerians, majorly the northerners.

His people knowing that was their best bet, answered to his call & Ndigbo all came back home, & Ojukwu after securing Ndigbo support, declared the sovereign state of Biafra.

If truly the northerners & south-westerners don't need Ndigbo, what should they have done ? Was it not to smile, thank their god & let these people they call evil to go so they can have peace & progress ? But they knew Ndigbo was their economy power, the only brain behind Nigeria's progress, & this too was known by the cunning British government who knew that Ndigbo will do awesome & possibly liberate the black Africans from white slavery & technology dependence, backed northerners to declare war against Ndigbo then known as Biafra to bring them back to the said one Nigeria that will never work.

Now, who said Ojukwu started a war He never did, it was the Nigerian troops that waged war against Biafra for making an attempt to secede from Nigeria, & Biafra naturally as any other entity would do, fought back with bare hands, den guns, cutlasses, etc. Other tribes ought to always respect Ndigbo, cos no other tribe can do a pint of what they can do & did.

After Nigerian troops invaded Biafra, Biafra attacked defensively, & in an attempt to end the war fast, which they almost won before British massive support plus Awolowo's evil idea, matched progressively towards Lagos which happened to be Nigeria's capital & economic nerve then, to seize the capital & seaport so Nigeria can surrender & let them be their own nation, Biafra.

But Awolowo being a tribalist & a selfish man always seeking for his own economic gains, decided to join efforts with the jihadist northerners.

Let me stop here for now. But I want to drop these words for all to have in mind.

Nigeria is witnessing backwardness today cos of the evil they waged against innocent people, & have continued to do same to date. Igbos have free mind, they forgive & move on easily, hence u see them still going to live all parts of Nigeria & still build landmark buildings & investments in foreign lands irrespective of how they are being maltreated at any slightest opportunity.

No other tribe can dare it. so thats why nature is paying Nigerians back. & for the record, South-East is the only region in the whole of Nigeria that has the lowest rate of poverty, check MDGs records if u doubt, despite the fact that they have never smelled Nigeria presidency since 1966. north has been there as if its their thrown yet poverty rate there is close to 100%, this shows God is with Ndigbo despite the harsh economy of Nigeria.

The north: north-central & rest of the north will never witness a total peace because Gowon betrayed his Christian brothers in the South-East, he went & fought ignorantly for a jihadist group.

More consequences await Nigeria for ill-treatments against Ndigbo, so boko haram is just a start until they ask for Ndigbo forgiveness publicly & promise never to kill innocent Ndigbo who sojourn in their lands ever again.

Awolowo’s great achievements can only be interpreted through the hyperbolic eyes of myopic Yoruba people. Awo, the voice of reason, was ignored. The result? Well you know the rest. Make your bed, lay in it. No whining!

I cherish the day an ethnic war will start between yoruba and Igbo. That day is being delayed because some Biafrans are still alife. The generations of Igbos that were not Biafrans are taking over decision making in Igboland. They will read the book and be convinced on how demonic Awolowo and his people are.

The most interesting thing will the fact that housa, fulani,Igala, tiv,Igbira,Kanuri,Shua Arabs,Jukun, gwari ,france,U.S,U.K and Russia will not come to ypur aid. They will never want to be involved or at least in the same way, because they know history.

I look forward to that day to bring justice. It hasn't started.

One thing I'm quite sure about is that Yorubas will start that war. They have started it gradualy already in a soft way, either intentionaly or unintentionaly.

Nothing will stop them from starting it.They call it wisdom and sophistication.Igbos are good at observing such wisdom and sophistication and keeping quiet and records for some time until a certain tresh hold
