Gov. Ugwuanyi awards N2.4 billion state, federal road projects The administration of Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has awarded contracts for the construction of six major roads across the state at the sum of N2.4 billion, covering the Eha-Amufu-Nkalagu federal road at Isi-Uzo Local Government Area, which has been in a deplorable condition. Other roads include the extension of the Agbani-Afor Amurri road; the extension of Ituku road; the construction of Ogonogoeji Ndi Agu Akpugo road (Atavu Bailey Bridge –Afor Onovo); the construction of 42 meter span Bailey bridge and road works across river Nyama to Amechi-Linking Umuogo and Umuagba Amechi Uno/ Obinagu community, mostly located in Nkanu West L.G.A. It would be recalled the Gov. Ugwuanyi had recently inspected most of the road projects, where he promised the immediate intervention of his administration and reiterated his commitment to the development of the rural areas to give the dwellers a sense of belonging and make life more meaningful for them. Addressing newsmen after the State Executive Council meeting, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Greg Nnaji, explained that the council approved the splitting of the 8.8 km Eha-Amufu- Nkalagu road into lots 1 and 2, and awarding of the contracts to separate reputable contractors that will commence works simultaneously from the Nkalagu axis that borders Enugu and Ebonyi States and the Eha-Amufu College of Education section. Engr. Nnaji disclosed that the 8.8km road which will cost over N1.3billion, was divided into two lots “to ensure that the construction is fast tracked within the weather window available this year”. Ugwuanyi The management and students of Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Christian Anieke today paid a “Thank You” visit to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State at the Government House, Enugu for releasing the sum of N500 million being agreed upon as the state government contribution for the construction of the Ugwuomu-Nkwubor-Godfrey Okoye University road. The Vice Chancellor, who spoke on behalf of the elated delegation, also thanked Gov. Ugwuanyi for the 500KVA transformer his administration donated to the university, saying: “We are very grateful that in a very short period of time you fulfilled your promises to us”. Prof. Anieke while briefing Gov. Ugwuanyi on the progress of the road project, appreciated him for the opportunity to partner with the University. t would be recalled that the Enugu State Government in keeping with its massive road construction works both in the rural and urban areas, recently awarded contract for the construction of a 10-kilometer Emene-Ugwuomu-Nkwubor-Godfrey Okoye University road in Enugu East Local Government Area of the state at the cost of over N1.5 billion..... ------------------------------------------------------- The governor has done very well for remote communities... Air Peace Takes Delivery of New B777 Aircraft Nigerian carrier, Air Peace, has taken delivery of one of its newly acquired Boeing B777-200 aircraft in preparation for its commencement of international operations. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 274 capacity aircraft, christened “Ikechukwu “, touched down at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos at about 3.30 pm on Friday. The aircraft, which was flown in by Capt. Victor Efionu and his team, was received by the Chairman of Air Peace, Mr Allen Onyema and other top aviation personnel. Onyema said Air Peace recently began flights to Banjul, Freetown and Dakar in the West Coast of Africa, stressing that it would soon start flights on international destinations including Dubai, Guangzhou-China, London, Houston, Mumbai and South Africa. “Air Peace is ready to begin operations on these routes as soon as we get the cooperation of our aviation agencies, our home governments, and the outside governments of the countries we are going to . As soon as we get their cooperation, we will make it happen, ” Onyema said. According to him, what Air Peace has done in less than three years of operations shows clearly that Nigerian airlines can compete and even perform better than the legacy airlines if there is a level playing field. ” This is the first time a Nigerian carrier is acquiring a B777. What we have had in the past is through leases which were not favourable to the airline operators. “So, I don’t believe that Nigerian airlines cannot compete favourably with the others. What we have been lacking is the necessary support. “Within the last three years, we have been able to increase our fleet size to 24 aircraft. That is rapid growth and we are still growing stronger,” he said. Onyema further dispelled insinuations that Nigerian airlines were not safe, noting that Air Peace spent up to $2.5 million annually in maintaining a single aircraft on its fleet. “So, in terms of safety, we can assure our guests of the very best because even our technical partners is a firm from the United Kingdom. “Air Peace cannot be said to be weak or indebted and if there are airlines that are going through that, they should come out and name them instead of generalising, ” he added. The Air Peace chairman also reiterated his opposition to the Single African Air Transportation Market (SAATM), stressing that it was of little or no benefit to Nigerian airlines. He said currently, the treaty does not favour Nigeria because other countries use high charges to discourage Nigerian airlines from operating to their cities. ARROBA: Whether it pains them or not, Enugu will finally achieve it's potential as an international city. My concern is that the state government appears unconcerned with trying to increase the number of places a tourist can hang out in Enugu. The focus is always on some Mmanwu festival that happens once a year instead of developing parks and places where people can go regardless of the time or period they visit Enugu. The Naira triangle / roundabout area can be developed into a great public park by planting trees, flowers and grasses all around it. Then Children playground areas are filled with white sand, swings, children slides, outdoor playground toys, inflatable pools, and areas for volley ball and other outdoor activities. Infact, once the place can be leased out to a private developer to develop into a public park similar to Port Harcourt Pleasure park (Without the lake or water body). But must have lots and lots of trees and flowers and with a parking lot for at-least 100 cars (100 meters BY 50 meters) parking lot. Building roads is important just as embarking on projects that will bring people into Enugu to spend and enjoy themselves for a week or two in the city/state.Those close to Governor Ugwuanyi should plant these ideas of encouraging private sector to develop outdoor activities and places where a tourist can visit while spending a 2 weeks holidays in Enugu. The economy of the state will vastly improve if it can position some of it's natural beauty to attract tourists who would want to visit a calm and neat Nigerian city and enjoy outdoor activities and the local cuisine. 5 Likes 1 Share

An Air Peace source once said that only the Guangzhou flights will originate from Enugu, for now. The Dubai, Houston, Johannesburg, and London flights would all originate from Lagos. PDPGuy: If Air Peace has a local subsidiary, it can pick people from any airport in Nigeria to begin the international flights in a designated airport. Although it makes sense to definitely combine Enugu and Lagos for it's international operations. It can begin in Lagos, but enter Nigeria via Enugu and then proceed for final landing in Lagos. 6 Likes 2 Shares |

We need an innovative water system to provide water in our cities and villages. The past methods of building mighty water works systems to provide water to entire cities or Greater Onitsha water scheme to provide regional water supply has failed because the concept was too complicated and our management system based on government was guaranteed to fail. In the United States small communities or towns often come together to provide their own potable water system. This is a simple system whereby the community sinks a bore-hole at a designated place and pumps the water in an overhead storage tank. The water then flows by gravity from the tank into the various homes in that community. This is a simple technology that will work very well in our environment where people understand the need for self help projects. And no need for too much government intervention to provide their own constant portable water supply. Concrete water tanks as in the picture may be easier for our bricklayers and plumbers to construct with local technology. This simple system can solve the potable water issue in many cities and villages. There is no need to build mighty water works systems that are too expensive and too complicated for local manpower to maintain. Instead let landlords’ association be organized by government and 200-500 building in each neighborhood will come together and sink their own borehole and set up the overhead tank. The water from the tank is then piped to the various buildings who are members of that project. When about 200-500 3 or 4 storey building can come together to share the cost of sinking a proper deep borehole in a central location and pipe the water to the homes which are part of the project, the cost of the project per family may be as little as mere N2,000 naira to raise about N10 million naira for the project! A city like Enugu can have about 10 of these neighborhood water systems supplying specific streets. Nsukka can have about 5 neighborhood water supply systems Then, a system to place water meters in front of each compound to measure their water use for billing purposes is implemented with help of state government. This neighborhood water systems will create employment, while also ensuring the constant supply of portable water at affordable prices for all. Not to mention of the fact that it will stop spread of water borne diseases. I hope the Enugu state governor immediately put machinery in place as well as engage philanthropists and Landlords associations to begin choosing appropriate sites in each neighborhood to implement a neighborhood water supply system co-managed by that state and the landlords association in each neighborhood. Pilot projects can begin in Enugu and Nsukka urban areas for now. 7 Likes 1 Share

Biko nu, Please, there is need for a souvenir shop along Chime avenue or Ogui road in Enugu. During my last visit to Nigeria, it was very hard to find these things. Does it mean we don't have artists and sculptors? What happened to all those IMT graduates of fine arts? These souvenirs and ready made African clothes are truly a must have for anyone visiting Nigeria because we don't have time to make the clothes. Releases N1.7 billion for Intl Wing Christopher Isiguzo in Enugu The federal government on Monday lamented that the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu would not enjoy full international certification until the myriads of challenges constituting security threats at the airport are fully addressed. The government specifically frowned at the activities of some individuals who had erected properties around the airport, insisting that such properties should be demolished immediately. The Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, who stated this after an inspection tour of facilities at the airport, said the federal government had already released N1.7billion for construction work to continue at the international wing of the airport, stressing that more money would be made available when the 2018 was released for completion work. Explaining that government was determined to realise the completion of the airport in record time, the minister said full international flight would only commence with the removal and relocation of several property obstructing the runway, security and flight operations. Some of the offending properties, according to him, are the multi-million naira Enugu Empower free trade zone, whose foundation was laid in 2016 by the state government; the Orie Emene market; television and radio stations masts, residential buildings as well as fencing of the airport. Sirika, who lamented the level of encroachment at the Enugu airport, stated that the runway expansion which the incumbent administration embarked upon had been hampered by encroachment, stressing that “people willingly set up structures along the runways. “Government decided to expand the runway from 2.5 kilometres to three km to accommodate more international flights and cargoes, but stopped midway because people built within 100 metres on the runway. We need to dam the river to enable us use the water to service the airport. “The Orie market is a security threat. There is an abattoir in the market that attracts vultures which portends danger to flights. There is a road leading to the Very High Frequency Omni-Directional Radio Range (VOR) which is in terrible state. It functions 24 hours because it guides pilots in their flights. “Without this, this airport cannot be operated. The road is 1.5 kilometres and we need to build it because it is impassible during the rainy season.” The minister who later paid a courtesy call on the state Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, explained that unless the security concerns at the airport were addressed, the certification of the airport to an international status would not be possible. He called on the state government to do the needful as he would do all in his abilities to ensure that Enugu was given its rightful status in view of its economic viability. The governor had told the minister that he would do all in his ability to ensure that the airport gets an international status to enhance Enugu’s economic and social status. He pleaded with the minister to put all the requests in writing as quickly as possible in order to fasten the issues raised even as he immediately asked the Ministry of Enugu Capital Territory to immediately demolish the structures located few metres from the airport runway. Cooly100: Point of correction, Buhari administration DID NOT ENLONGATE THE RUNWAY, IT WAS DONE BY JONATHAN AND BUHARI STOPPED THE COMPLETION OF THE TAXIWAY TO REACH 3 KM as a standard international airport which was already awarded by Stella Odua. Instead they built an air force bungalow and helipad exactly on the path of the taxiways to completely kill the prospect of having a taxiways on the airport. Lots and lots of silly excuses. Soon. They will ask for entire Enugu to be demolished so they can provide facilities already in other airports. They should first demolish the airforce bungalow on the taxiway path, and relocate the fuel talks to the rear of the airport and anything built on the path of the taxiway. BUHARI and his bunch of tribalists should please concession the airport to private investors. Cjrane2: GBAM! They should tell us why Akanu Ibiam international is the ONLY international airport in Nigeria WITHOUT a Taxiway and WHEN they hope to correct that anomaly. They are instead erecting all sorts of obstacles close to the main landing runway so that they can cause an accident and gladly close down the airport for a very long time. If not, why would they be building all these useless Nigerian air-force classroom buildings so close to the runway of an international airport receiving large body aircrafts? Is that spot the only space in the entire airport to build a classroom? Who instructed the airforce commander in Enugu to build a classroom right on the runway of a civilian airport? Why can't they go and build their own airforce base somewhere and build structures on the runway? In Kano and kaduna, the airforce built their own runway. Why not build a second runway in Enugu for the airforce? I am all for safety and what will bring the desired growth of the airport. Therefore, these pretentious tribalists should first fix the internal issues they have created out of their toxic politics against the airport before focusing on external people building too close to the airport runway or taxiway. They have put all sorts of obstacles along the taxiway of the airport to make it nearly impossible to build a proper taxiway there. Infact some buildings built by the airforce are so dangerously close to the main landing runway as in the picture below a little cross-breeze that shifts the plane on landing will result in a catastrophe. A Boeing 747 wings will definitely smash into that building upon landing. So why should the structure be there? To prevent Akanu Ibiam international airport from ever receiving bigger planes? We see the same issue with 2nd Niger bridge Onitsha, were APC government had to stop work on the project as they had to review impact analysis and compensations...Why wasn't these done before? ChimaAdeoye: The ICAO requirement for the closest thing to any runway in any airport is the terminal building is usually about 350-500 meters away from the edge of the runway for runways up to 1800 meters and above in length. AIIA, Enugu has 3000 meters runway length! Anything closer to this is a grave safety concern and definitely no structure should ever be closer to the runway than the terminal building! 1 Like |
