It's an achievement just like graduation, celebrating 40, 50 , 60 years or more. It's an achievement just like having a baby, securing a good paying job, losing weight or stop smoking! An achievement is an achievement regardless of opinion!

Family / Re: The Biggest Mistake Nigerian Parents Do by abbey621(m): 6:02pm On Aug 12, 2023
UnfairLife7:
How many parents in Nigeria can comfortably see their wards through school without them contributing in one way or the other? Very few parents are in that category. Most of these lads chose cyber fraud as sustainance in school and after school. Yes i understand your point though. A child who lack nothing. Everything is being provided for him/her. I believe such a person should be able to think of what to do if not for anything, at least to relieve his/her parents from financial burden and perhaps allow them focus on his/her younger siblings. I get your point.

But you know there are students who singlehandedly sponsored themselves through school, had social life in school and still graduate top of their class? How will you feel if those people in that category also said they see no reason why someone would go through the four walls of university without coming out with at least 2.1? You called that personal decision or accountability but to them they somewhat see it as failure. To them anything less than 2.1 is nothing but failure. Sorry to say.

Besides, most of these guys don't even depends on their parents. They're mostly into cyber fraud and some other illegal means of making money. The ones who do not involve in fraudulent act depends on their parents which obviously is wrong.

All I'm saying is if you are lucky enough to have parents that sponsored you throughout university study, there's no excuse to still be depending on them after NYSC. Even if job no dey, the university experience should have taught you how to be resourceful! Furthermore, for students like that there should be no excuse not to get 2.1 or better!

Now, if the student had to struggle with finances by working, shouldn't such a student be more motivated than those who had it easy? I know for sure the most brilliant students from my set were those of very poor backgrounds. In fact one of the poorest from my set made a living selling handouts and conducting tutorials. Such a student after graduation would have no problem being resourceful even if job no dey because the entrepreneurial spirit was already activated!

Itit is very much possible @bolded

Don't use your own situation/circumstance as a norms or general standard.

In Nigeria today, it is very much possible for graduates to depends on their parents in many ways. Someone who got admission immediately after secondary school or someone who was working after secondary school to support his/her parents for his/her education. There was no time to learn skills. I do not mean digital skills.

After school and service, you and i know majority of Nigerian graduates do not get job after school. It is not new to us anymore. Some of these graduates ended up with teaching job with paltry pay just to keep soul and body together. Some ended up learning one skills or the other (fashion design, plumbing, welding et al. They obviously depends on their parents/guidian during these period.

If you can comfortably assume you see no reason why a graduate should depends on their parents after school. What if someone said he/she see no reason why a reasonable person will go through school without coming out with at least strong 2.1 or first-class in a course he/she spent at least 4 years? What would you have to say to such person? I believe that person has reason for saying that just as you

All you've written are nothing but excuses! Go back and read my comment, I said the parents sponsored the kid through university, this means they are obviously not poor to the point that they need that kid to help out in providing income for the family. I'm going to say it again, if a parent can sponsor the child throughout his or her university education, there's no reason why such a child would still need to depend on the parent for survival after graduating.

Yes jobs no dey, yes the country hard but if these kids are still liabilities before and after university then wahala dey! University is more than just education, it's meant to teach young ones on how to be adults, how to network, how to relate with people from all over! If in 4-6 years you've never made a kobo by yourself while studying at a Nigerian university then you've learnt NOTHING!

Finally, your point about 2.1 or first class is also invalid. Yes there's no excuse for not being able to achieve such, failure to do so is nobody's fault but your OWN! It's called ACCOUNTABILITY! I graduated with a 2.2 and if I'm honest with myself, it was my fault, I chose the school, I chose the course and I chose social life over being a nerd....It is what it is!

Don't know what cool aid/zobo y'all have been drinking lately but if you are fortunate enough to finance your child through 4-6 years of university, you do not owe that child anything else career wise.

All that talk about investment, art etc, should be for you! Only when you're okay currently and future wise should you even consider worrying about the career of a university graduate. You want your child to be independent, you want him or her to be able to survive under any condition. These kids nowadays get chewed and spat out by the harsh realities of society nowadays because they've not been allowed the freedom and autonomy to grow independently!

There's no f*cking reason, a twenty something year old graduate is still depending on mama or papa for feeding.....Makes no damn sense!

Listen my man, forgiveness is not for them but for you, it is for closure. You do not want to carry all that negativity into the next generation. Imagine your kids asking about your parents and all you can narrate to them is curse and frustrations.....NOT COOL!

In the end, nobody gives a flip if you forgive or not, I can bet my last kobo your papa has kids elsewhere and his military training has drained the normal emotions a parent should have for his kids. If Tinubu truly wanted Senate approval, y'all think this marshmallow Senate would defy him? You guys still don't understand how politics work, you think Buhari would advice him to attack Niger? I laugh in Swahili.......As Ecowas Chairman he has done what needs to be done, not only will Nigeria preserve its dignity but more foreign assistance could be coming since this could be used to label Niger as a terrorist country and Nigeria needs to protect its borders. The foolish thing to do would be to attack when Nigeria gains absolutely nothing in return!

Politics / Re: At Ministerial Screening, Wale Edun Says Naira Fair Value Is N700/$1 by abbey621(m): 2:49pm On Aug 02, 2023
Dancebreaker:

So you now admit without knowing it that good governments make tough decisions when economy is seemingly good so that the impact will not weigh too much on the currency. Removing subsidy in 2012 would have meant 9ja had enough reserve and decent income to cushion the inflationary effects.

Simple logic dictates that you save in times of plenty to safeguard lean days in the future. Nigerians and Nigeria had more economic resilience to cope with subsidy removal in 2012 than right now. We could have begun renovating refineries 11 years ago with saved subsidy money.

BUT APC opposed it and protested everywhere. So why did APC spend good 8 years without removing subsidy? Economically, 9ja is not more resilient now than it was in 2016, 2017, 2019 or say 2022, so why now?

So it turns out that GEJ that you people and APC dubbed clueless actually had foresight. But he was from the wrong tribe because some tribes claim monopoly over intelligence and ability.

Remember too, low crude oil price in theory means cheaper price in the international market to import PMS. Meaning reduced total subsidy IF our elite including those in FG right now actually let us have the correct PMS consumption figures and not send half of subsidised PMS to other African countries to line their pockets.

You're still talking about APC, go back and read what I wrote. Until the blame game stops and government does the needful, NOTHING CHANGES!

Dancebreaker:

Just over 200 Naira was lambasted by opposition in 2015, but now 700 is ok?

Abeg my brother, tell us how many more finished industrial goods we supply in huge quantities to China, USA, France, NZ, UK or even ECOWAS countries that we didn't produce in 2015. Valuable goods that we want to now make more competitive in World market with low Naira value.
Fact is economic downturn and suffering affects every tribe, political affiliation, etc. So let's be honest.

200 Naira when oil prices were sky high and the country actually had a reserve. Fast forward almost 10 years later, oil is no longer lucrative, in fact the way Nigeria treats its oil is deadass backwards.

Dig crude oil, sell to outside countries, buy it back from them in refined form and then subsidize the cost to the citizens? As if that's not bad enough, government had to borrow the money for the subsidy......No be juju be that?

We can keep blaming the present administration or we can accept that ALL of them, both past and present are responsible for the predicament! Until we refine our own oil, focus less on importation and more on exportation, nothing changes. Till we do this.....THE SHEGE SHALL BE REVOLUTIONARY!

Why is US not going for war against Russia leading NATO despite enough provocation from Russia? It is because US is lacking manpower and arsenal right?

Nigeria is struggling economically, then they should go headlessly into war? You think only what is needed to prosecute war is manpower?

Baby with baby's talk.

Stop comparing apples with oranges. U.S cannot go to war with Russia because Ukraine is not a NATO member. Furthermore, Russia does not share a direct border with the USA, if they did, trust me nothing would stop the USA from marching in and stomping on Russia's throat.

You're right that war should be avoided at all cost but stop comparing situations that are vastly different!

guy what u said is wrong. I am not a pdp fan but their was a stat here recently, I think last month that compared the our President Performance since obj and buhari was the worst followed by Jonathan. Yar adua had the most impressive and obj was manageable. So I don't know where u saw ur facts from. Also it is too early to judge tinubu, so I will remain optimistic about is regime even thou things are kind of hard right now.

If Jonathan encountered what Buhari faced, this country would have expired long ago. You people keep comparing tenures as if they all dealt with the same economic and societal issues. For example during Jonathan's reign, oil prices allowed Nigeria to make healthy profits, imagine what would have happened if Covid brought everything to a standstill. With the way the government was spending yafun yafun, dem go borrow money like there's no tomorrow.

Now compare this to Buhari's reign, where oil prices dipped significantly and Covid happened, why were we surprised that the government barely kept functioning? Why we dey shocked when billions are borrowed just to service existing obligations while new obligations were left to starve?

The truth remains that GEJ was 9ja's last chance at stability without mass suffering, his failure led to Buhari's admin being overwhelmed and now Tinubu is facing the same thing. Either tough, seemingly cruel decisions are made now and we face the shege for a limited time or we keep passing the shege from one tenure to another. IF YOU DON'T BELIVE ME, ASK YOURSELF, WHAT DOES NIGERIA PRODUCE? We keep shouting natural resources natural resources, even oil we no fit refine am.....NO BE JUJU BE THAT?
