AbdH:

The hadith are filtered. What we follow in the practises of the prophet are from the sound hadith.

About where the prophet encouraged this prayer, check the post that started this thread and you'll see: '(After the prayer) he stood up, glorified and praised Allah as He deserved and then said, “The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of the death or the life (i.e. birth) of someone. When you see them make haste for the prayer.”

The prophet was not perfect for he was human and that is why he was always called out whenever he wanted to commit errors hence the need for Allah to reveal the verse you quoted.

Like I said before, Muslims improvise and grow with science as long as it doesn't go against our creed. A pen is halal but it can be used to draw pornographic pictures which is haram. Do we throw away the pen because of that? NO! Same goes for a computer. These materials are allowed for they do not do bad unless they are used in a bad way and their users will be responsible.

If the prophet climbed an olive tree then we must not climb a mango tree......this, my brother is not true.
You have not said anything to show where the prophet suggested the practise should continue for ever. Contrast this with the practise of Killing Rams at Id el Adha
The context on that occasion was his son died and people superstitiously believed the eclipse was related to that so he guided them. That does not mean prayers should be offered EVERY time there is an Eclipse or Thunder or Earthquakeor Rainfall or other NATURAL PHENOMENA with simple explanations
The verse was not when he WANTED TO COMMIT Errors. I don't think you know the context of that verse. HE DID COMMIT AN ERROR and Allah corrected him with regard to Honey.
It is not everything the prophet did that must be copied. Much of what he did was based on CULTURE of ARABS and the AVAILABLE TECHNOLOGY at that time and not ISLAM. We cannot say his use of Camels or Horses or Sword Instead of Bikes or guns or bombs was in anyway religious

The other issue of Perfection is this: Did the prophet have a FAVOURITE WIFE nd what did he preach on this subject

I have to say the writer has half knowledge of what he is talking about. Language is a tool, a servant not a master. Some people are old enough to remember when the word "GAY" meant something completely different from Homosexual. Users decided to change its accepted meaning. Many of us may cringe when we see people write things like LOL etc. The reality is language changes.

Quite apart from the fact that language changes is the fact that colonial users of languages have their own rhythyms and the language has to adapt locally to meet LOCAL NEEDS. We see this in America,In Canada,Australia,South Africa and other Commonwealth Nations. Americans say e.g Zee instead of Zed, Trunk instead of boot, hood instead of Bonnet and there are pronunciation differences.
It is quite legitimate for Nigerians to do the same.
Expressions like
DO THE NEEDFUL
THERE IS NO LIGHT
I WILL DEAL WITH YOU
LET US TAKE OKADA
CARRY GO
NO SHAKING

etc are an EMERGING part of our linguistic currency and should be encouraged

Ordinarily, I hardly comment on any post on nairaland, but I just can't resist the urge to do so this time around. Mr by your posts, one could fathom that you are sounding like a philosopher, always interested in THINKING and asking 'WHY' all the time. But, what you don't know is, this is bound to lead you astray and make you sound like a fool. Even the philosophers go against themselves, and you can't be right every time. I understand your doctrine, even though it seems you are a muslim, but today you are questioning Prophet and Sunnah, I could see even you are beginning to question Allah and the Quran. This is how being an atheist began.

Outside religion now, there are some issues you just can't insist on asking 'WHY' 'WHY' Can you question your employer on a pattern of dress code he chooses for his employee, or the working hours and days? By the time you become an authority, you will understand how it felt for someone to question you. If you are not a parent yet, the day you become one and you give an instruction or injunction to your children and they question you and ask you 'WHY', then you will understand better. Continue with your 'WHY' 'WHY' principle. God help you.
Does your father sound like a fool when he asks you why?
I am not saying he is a fool but does he sound like a fool

More than 20 times in the Quran . The phrase is used. "Have you no Sense,Have they no sense,This is a sign for thinking man etc" In fact the Speaker criticizes many unbelievers for not thinking. So I am quite sure muslims are expected to THINK.

The reason why we have computers and aircraft is because people asked why not because they prayed at lunar eclipses

I am told
There is a Hadith that says the thinking of one hour is better than 70 years prayer although I do not read hadiths but
I know the Quran VERY MUCH encourages thinking. I know most muslims in Nigeria have not read the Quran. In fact they do not own one!!

AbdH:

Oh, I see where you are coming from. From the Sunnah, the prophet (SAW) prayed when there was an eclipse and he encouraged us to do so. In the Qur'an, you must have read where Allah says, '....in the prophet is a perfect exemplar. Therefore we follow his examples as much as we can. The lamp similitude you posted does not go with the discussion but there is nothing wrong in Muslims improvising as long as it does not affect the creeds of Islam.
The same sun and moon that caused the eclipse during the prophet's time are still the ones expected to cause the next one and the same prayer is going to be said - this is standard - any change would affect the creeds of Islam and how we relate with Allah but not so the lamp case.
The So called Sunnah are often lies the Quran is the only authority. Anyway can you quote the SUnnah on the Eclipse so we can examine whether the Prophet actually encouraged ALL MUSLIMS TO DO SO FOREVER. If the Prophet encouraged people to write with pens that does not mean they should not adopt computers.

So we must ask WHY did the Prophet do that..WHAT IS THE REASON . It is only when we know the reason we can determine whather this was something that was encouraged for ONE PARTICULAR YEAR or FOR EVER. Many things in the QURAN have a CONTEXT and if readers do not know the context they assume it is an eternal doctrine or injunction. This is wrong.

With regard to the Prophet being a perfect exemplar again WHAT DOES THIS MEAN EXACTLY ? That the prophet is not a man? the same Quran tells us man is not perfect. Anyway we must still THINK and not follow WORDS blindly

I also read in the same Quran

Sura 66.
O Prophet! Why bannest thou that which Allah hath made lawful for thee, seeking to please thy wives?

What is the context of this verse. Does this imply PERFECTION.
Even if it does, the prophet married more than ONE woman does he advise ALL Muslims to do the same.
At some point he married a girl who was a child. Are we to coclude that those who don't marry children are bad muslims or that they gave GONE ASTRAY as someone seems to be suggesting.?
The Prophet advised his followers to capture women/slaves etc as bounty as was the practice then are you suggesting a muslim is not a good muslim if he does not go out capturing women or slaves?

One Problem Christianity had in its early days was its adherents insisted on the LITERAL TRUTH of everything and this naturally led to conflict. Eventually it had to reform, a very painful process both for Christianity and Society.

Eventually Islam will have to do ths same and confront several inconsistencies in the Quran that are just no longer acceptable e.g ideas of women's inferiority, notions that "menstruation is a disease",intolerance of other religions, The idea that the earth and man are at the centre or the most important part of the Universe, The Quran claims the moon is a "light" we know that the moon is no more a light than the Earth is(The moon has no light), Violent punishments like stoning and amputations to name a few. Christianity and Islam can bury their heads i the sand and refuse to face scientific reality but mankind is moving on. Man and the earth re a relatively inconsequential part of an inconsequential part of the universe

My Point is if the prophet climbed a tree in his life time should we ask why he climbed a tree or then conclude there is religious benefit in climbing trees.

Some people it would seem reason along the lines" if he climbed an olive tree then we must not climb mango trees"

Most people judge Islam from afar and from what they are told by other people who are ignorant of the religion. You cannot pretend to know Islam more than Muslims. There is benefit in what the prophet encouraged and practised and it doesn't harm us if we try to follow him. Any Muslim who has the time to observe this solat should do so wholeheartedly.
There may be benefit in using oil lamps but I think electric lamps are more beneficial. Without being boastful I can say I have read the Quran and there is no injunction for any special observance of eclipses. NONE

Cahmegga:

The last prophet of God, Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W) said in his last sermon...

"I leave behind me two things, the QURAN and my example, the SUNNAH and if you follow these you will never go astray"

So, we muslims do not want to go astray, so we follow his teachings and actions...u may not know how helpful thses actions are to a muslim until u become a muslim yourself.

All the time, Allah knows best!
The prophet could not possibly "leave behind him" the Quran. The quran is for those who believe it the word of Allah and not the LEGACY of the prophet. Regarding example again I say the prophet was an Arab who lived over a thousand years ago in the desert. WHO determines what is example/SUNNAH or just ancient Arab culture. E,g do we say because he rode camels or horses we MUST NOT RIDE bicycles. Did he use matches, laptops or phones.
The reality is the so called Sunnah are often argued and debated. The only thing muslims do not argue about is the Quran so everything else is arguable or subject to interpretation
There are clearly elements in the Quran itself that are interpreted differently by diffferent readers or in different contexts.
Repeatedly in the quran you hear the expression "have they no sense"? "this is an example for thinking man" etc this tells me that muslims are EXPECTED TO THINK AND HAVE SENSE

So I ask what is the rationale for the short Trousers? Why is that Sunnah?

You speak as if ALL Muslims agree and follow the same "SUNNAH or so called Examples" Is this the case

I say the following without any disrespect at all.
I often hear many muslims say the Prophet did A and so I must do A. I believe often this does not have to be the case. The fact that he performed a certain procedure during a certain eclipse does not mean ALL MUSLIMS MUST do the same procedure during ALL Eclipses. One example I see is this practice of wearing short trousers or garments several inches shy of the ground. There is an element of colonialisation in this approach.
The prophet was an Arab who lived in the desert I don't see the sense in wearing short trousers in cold countries

Back to the eclipse issue. Without disputing anything can anyone explain why it is necessary to follow a certain procedure EVERYTIME there is an ECLIPSE.
WHY is this necessary?
Is there any benefit,what?
Any disadvantage,what?
Many people introduce a lot of superstitious practises into Islam which seems like some form of idolatry

Ninejaywon: .So many people these days go into body-building or rather strength training for some silly reasons. For me the best reason for a rational individual 2 venture into body-building shud be for physical-fitness.i started trainin since 2007 and i haven't looked back since den. Most of ma friends i trained with have all dropped d baton because they thought attracting hot chicks, wearing fitted shirts and posting half-nude pics of demselves on social media sites were what body-building cud offer.Body-building is my passion,i endured despite my small-gains in muscle-mass because i knew dis was going 2 be a life-time project.Persistence, resilience, determination and hard-work has being ma ingredients.TODAY wen ma friends see me dey are always saying ninejaywon u are still muscular all thrru dese years, whatz d secret.i just smile and tell dem am still in d game cos of d health benefits of body-building.i know deep down in ma heart i still have alot to offer dis beautiful sport.I hail all body-builders around d world.u are d envy of so many dudes and haters.
Well done and more grease.
I think strength training is different from Body building though. Body builders are generally not as fit or strong as weightlifters. It is to a weightlifters advantage to be lighter as this means competing in a lower category or scoring more for lifting the same weight with a heavier guy. The main problem with bodybuilding is what happens as you get older. You need testosterone to keep muscle and that starts going down from age 30 so you looking at man breasts and all that. Having said all of that I have no problem with working out as long as no steroids etc are involved but this will mean slow progress for most people and I don't think anyone can make it into the Elite group of body builders without steroids.
Generally an athlete can be muscular and slim and look very good physically e.g footballers ,swimmers and many boxers. Personally I prefer the athletic look of a Balotelli to that of an Arnold Schwarz.
A lot of bodybuilders have psychological problems. Maybe not in Nigeria but certainly in the west and these are made worse when they start using steroids mainly anger and mood problems .Many use analgesics chronically and this often includes opiates. The part that puts me off is testoterone injections signal to the body to STOP producing testoserone, the testicles shrink and sperm production ceases. But Why?

tbaba1234: Manu Garba and his team have done a great job in bringing together what i feel is one of the most talented U 17 team since Japan 93. Kanu, Oruma, Ojigwe and babayaro were graduates of that team and went on to have good careers. There were some other talents that disappeared, Anosike is one that comes to mind.

Good career decisions are often key in this regard. Onazi was a graduate of the 2009 set and is already a starter for both club and country. Omeruo has not quite broken through the ranks at chelsea but has shown remarkable growth since 2009. Ramon Azeez is beginning to start games for struggling Almeria, hopefully he can develop quickly as well. Stanley Okoro ended up in Bulgaria where he will most likely fade away.

My future stars from this set are as follows:

Musa Yahaya: Kanu is the most successful product of this system and i feel this boy is certainly a star in the making. A move to Holland, Belgium or Portugal will be ideal, i feel. First team action in any of those leagues will accelerate his development and set him for the big stage. Think Barca, Madrid, Man U, he is that good.

Isaac Success
: Already signed for Udinese. Big strong striker.. Udinese will probably loan him out for a few seasons. If he stays fit and develops. We will be hearing his name for some time.

Kelechi Iheanacho: One word : composure. His finishes have been world class. He needs to make the step up when he faces stronger defenders that will give him little space. Daily mail reports that Arsenal are in for him. Good move.

Musa Muhammed
: The captain. His movement up and down the pitch makes me feel his best position might be as a box to box midfielder. Impressive but will need to make the step up to be successful. Career move must be managed carefully.

These are the top four in my opinion... Who do you feel are the biggest prospects?

Makes plenty of sense IF we were discussing 17 year olds which we are not

DJ apprehended with 52 wraps of cocaine

Officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, have apprehended a 36-year-old Disc Jockey with powdery substance that tested positive for cocaine weighing 855 grammes.

In a statement on Tuesday by the NDLEA Head of Public Affairs, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, the suspect, Iwunze Magnus, with a South African passport number 460709224, was said to have boarded an Iberia flight from Costa Rica enroute Madrid.

He was found to have ingested 52 wraps of cocaine at the arrival hall of the airport, three of which he had excreted on the plane during the flight.

NDLEA Airport Commander, Mr. Hamza Umar confirmed the arrest.

He said, “Three wraps of substances weighing 190 grammes that tested positive for cocaine, were, during a routine search, found in Magnus’s pockets. He had excreted them during the flight from Costa Rica.

“He also tested positive for drug ingestion and while under observation, Magnus excreted 49 wraps that also tested positive for cocaine. In all, he had 52 wraps weighing 855 grammes of cocaine.”

Magnus said, “I am a disc jockey and I have my music studio in Johannesburg, where I have lived with my wife and kid since 1997.

“I had wanted to settle the debts I incurred during the burial of my late brother. In an attempt to pay the balance of N300,000, I fell into the hands of drug traffickers who lured me into the trade. They were to pay me $2,500, if I had succeeded.” Magnus is a native of Ibitolu in Imo State.

Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, said, “I understand the suspect had a South African passport. I have ordered a thorough investigation into the case. I also wish to appeal to members of the public to resist any attempt to smuggle and abuse drugs. Magnus will be charged to court at the conclusion of our investigation.”

I don't know how Oshiomole behaved I wasn't there.I know how Nyiam behaved because Nyiam said so in his own words. But there is a problem with your reasoning so far which you persist with . A behaved badly and so B reacted therefore B's reaction was justified. Not only is it illogical it is immature. We all saw on TV Luis Suarez bite a fellow footballer. I am sure he had a sense of grievance but did that justify his reaction. A player may foul me and all I get is a foul without even a yellow card . Do I say because it was painful I can punch him in the face.
We must learn the RULES OF PROTOCOL AND ORDER
As far as I am concerned, from what Nyiam has said,I do not see any offence Oshiomole committed.

Does Oshiomole not HAVE THE RIGHT TO SAY WHAT HE LIKES?? as you seem to be saying
Nyiam should have kept quiet and let him finish that is how civilized people behave. Otherwise he could have walked out. As a military man he should have known better. When a high value citizen is around with security detail is it right to create tension whose outcome may be unpredictable

That is unnecessary sentiment.
There is an adult way to reason and behave and there is a childish way. Nyiam did not behave like an adult or a representative of the President.

In life there must be rules and regulations. I was not there and I have relied solely on Nyiam's account assuming he is telling the Truth. His own words condemn him

Oshiomole is the Governor of the State and the number one citizen as such the rules of Public protocol give him precedence. If he misuses that are you suggesting he should be stoned.? He is entitled to say what he likes and anyone or everyone could have walked out. If Nyiam is so right why did the committee members disown him and apologize?

Nyiam was there to represent the President and that is all that concerns me. He MISrepresented the president. Can you imagine the Ambassador of Nigeria misbehaving that way if they visit a foreign country and are subject to an unpleasant speech.
