Can I DM you please
DeevaB:
Hello, is there anyone studying at the University of Waterloo or who can guide me? Got an admission offer yesterday but no funding. Tuition is paid per term and I have four terms, a friend advised me to get money for the first term and I can apply for funding for the other terms while I am there. I'd appreciate any information any available scholarship or a means to get funding and do not want to miss this opportunity. Thanks

Such an enlightening write-up! We are in the same shoes, though "male in tech" grin here. Can I send you a DM?

CuteRedd:
Pls do keep writing....We need to enlighten people. I belong to several GRE and MSINUS groups which are full of Indians and I have made lots of friends along the way. These guys are "go getters" their tenacity is quite infectious.

In fact, I have found some study buddies among them and i have improved a lot in my GRE study. I was targeting fall 2019 before into some low tier schools because i also have a 9-5 job in a tech firm.

But i have decided to push it to 2020 because most of the top tier schools funding deadlines have either passed or are coming up soon and i wont be able to meet them. Also, my course of study isn't really in low tier schools which has to do with Tech Innovation. Another great factor is the time it offers me to be more embedded in more tech and community projects in the next 8 months which would strengthen my application.

My target schools are Boston University for their dual degree, Cornell University, University of Virginia and some other mid tier schools.

One thing i decided to do is to check out their requirements and understand what is required. I have 8 months from now to put my best foot forward. I have also identified some bias that can work on my behalf.

1. African
2. Female
3. In Tech (3 magic words that sells like hot cake right now) grin

Secondly, i have reached out to alumni's in my proposed program on linkedin for tips etc, I found out for Boston University the rate of Africans applying to that course is very low. Infact 2016 set just had 1 African a Sudanese.... Spoke to her and found out she didn't even have the "top notch GRE score needed" Same with a friend who just got into Harvard but diversity, etc played a part.

Indians: What people don't understand is that they are in competition with each other for admit spots. An Indian once told me they are held to a higher standard than others from other countries just because they are too many of them that are just as good. That's why you find an Indian who got 320 in GRE crying and saying how can he get 330 embarassed can you imaginehuh?

Funding: The art of predicting every factor before it happens restrains anything from happening. I believe in taking a step at a time. You never know what can happen.

The inspiring story of how Koye got into INSEAD is a testimony to this among others https://www.bellanaija.com/2018/01/mogbekeloluwa-koye-ladele-shares-inspiring-insead-journey/

Another Great factor is: THE LONG TERM PLAN. Many Nigerians are very short sighted and they don't see the future nor the cycle change of leadership turning. The relationships, networks and pedigree etc can really do wonders for your future.

I am just encouraging people to make the best out of every opportunity that comes your way. Strive for the best as it plays out well in the long run. At least TRY! smiley

To be sincere with you no offense. I was a little bit pissed reading this conversation. Your answer to most of the questions are quite swallow. I believe you can do better with proper guidance. So i will advice you go through some past transcripts on this thread and see how they attack these questions you have been asked. Cheers and good luck next time.

Visa approved, Monday 25th at Abuja embassy. Window 6
After my third attempt. First one was October 19th 2018, second was 4th of January 2019. And the 3rd was Monday this week.
All glory to God because He actually did this for me.
Thanks to everyone here who helped me one way or the other.
I really appreciate you guys. Here goes my transcript

Vo: Good morning
Res: Good morning sir
Vo: Pass me your passport and I-20 pls
Vo: Have you traveled on another passport before?
Res: no sir
Vo: can I have the passport
Res: I said no sir
Vo: oh sorry I didn't hear that clearly. Why are you going to Austin Peay?
Res: Am going for my masters in computer science and quantitative methods with a concentration in information assurance and security but on my l-20 it was written there as Data modeling...(he didn't allow me to finish the statement)
Vo: that's ok. How do you want to pay for the cost?
Res: I was offered a graduate assistantship that waived my entire tuition with monthly stipend the rest of the cost will be taking care by my uncle who's into importation trading and distribution of LG brand both home appliances and electronics. I have his statement here with me
Vo: that's OK... I won't be needing the statement. The assistantship has covered everything. Where did you finish your undergraduate (I guess he asked that because I couldn't enter my educational history on my ds 160 when I was filling it. I don't know why the part is not coming up on my system.)
Res: Osun State University.

Vo: Why do you choose Austin Peay State University?
Res: I chose Austin Peay State University because they offered broad courses in information assurance and security. Their program incorporate field work with basic course. For example.. (he stopped me here)
Vo:thats OK. How did you get this assistantship?
Res: I applied then I was scheduled for a Skype interview, a week after the interview I received an email from the department that based on my performance during the interview, my gre scores, my undergraduate cgpa and recommendations, the department was willing to offer me the assistantship.
Vo: what do u intend to do after your study?
Res : ( but I thought he asked what the degree will do for me, so responded with this with the look of things in Nigeria cyber crime and attacks are becoming common place, sophisticated and damaging. Every organisation has (he stopped me and asked again)
Vo: what do you intend to do after your study?
Res: I'll be coming back to Nigeria to enforce whatever have learnt because there's a huge demand for cybersecurity experts here in Nigeria. A lot of organization outsource for this skill because its professional expertise... (he stopped me here, thats OK)

After this he started typing non stop and said the word *your visa has been approved, you will need your l-20 at the port of entry bla bla.
I collected my passport today.

I posted my transcript about F2 visa rejection in Lagos a couple of weeks ago. I decided to reapply immediately, and I was able to get a date in Abuja. The screening process was quite long and tedious compared to Lagos. Also, my baby was a bit restless, so I kept moving back and it took a while for my turn. This is the transcript of the interview as I can remember it;

VO: Good afternoon.

Me: Good afternoon Ma.

VO: Pass me your passport.

I gave her our passports and I-20s. She took her time to go through the I-20 and typed for a while.

VO: Where is husband studying?

Me: He is studying Molecular Biology in the University of ABC.

VO: How long have you been married?

Me: We have been married for 4 years it will be 5 years in a few months.

VO: How many children do you have?

Me: We have one child.

VO: Has he visited since he left?

Me: Yes, he visited us in August of last year.

VO: I can see that there is a shortfall in the living expenses on the I-20, how do you pay the rest?

Me: My husband has full funding and we have some personal savings.

She excused herself and left the cubicle with the passport and I-20 for about 5 minutes. While she was away, I was worried that maybe she was not convinced about the funding. Therefore, when she came back, I quickly said;

Me: I have the funding letter from his school here, would you like to see it?

VO: That wouldn’t be necessary (while smiling).

VO: Was he working before he left for the United States?

Me: He was working as a lecturer, and he is currently on study leave.

VO: What will you be doing in the U.S?

Me: I will be busy raising my child as well as providing physical and emotional support for my husband.

VO: Have you traveled before?

Me: No, I have not had a reason to travel.

VO: Do you or your husband have any relatives in the United States?

No: We don’t have any relatives in the U.S.

VO: I will be approving your visa. Please excuse me I need to get a document for you.

Me: Thank you Ma. (I few tears of joy rolled down from my eyes.)

She left and came back with a document containing instruction for student visa applicants stating that students are only allowed to enter U.S 30 days before the start of the program and not after the start date on the I-20. It also contains a reminder to take along and present I-20 at the port of entry.

I give all praises and thanks to Almighty Allah. I prayed fervently, did several mock interviews, and prepared written answers to likely questions. I big thank you to everyone on this thread. I learned a lot from here. By the way, I use full hijab that covers me from head to toe. I hope this will encourage and be useful for someone.

Congratulations bro. Yet you didn't drop the name of the school grin grin
alexohams2000:
Hello, I sure will drop the transcripts, missed three weeks of lectures so trying so hard to catch up... before I drop that when I am free, points to note, first, my interview was not in Nigeria, the questions were just so spontaneous, totally different from what's in here but then haven prepared exceptionally for the usual questions, I swept through.

As for my Initial AP status, I spent almost three weeks waiting and praying, but the the inspiration/advise came and I bombarded the embassy with emails and next day they acted, all thanks to God it came out positive. My advise to anyone future AP 'victim', please, wait for the embassy for like a week, if you don't hear from them, e-mail them and cal. Ignore that shit in that paper telling you not to contact until after 60 days, I mean...

My experience so far in brief: Education pass education, there's almost no education in Nigeria, don't come here and argue with me before I vex oo. My first lecture here, I almost weeped for my country and continent. Nigeria is still farrrrrr.

My school needs more African students though, we are about 10 here from Africa and 4 of us are Nigerians. I am the only graduate student here from Nigeria and in coming weeks I will be officially going around different states/localities that have notable African communities to create awareness...beginning with Houston here.

May God bless Nigeria! May God bless Africa! God has blessed America mehn!!!!!!

Most application deadlines are fast approaching nonetheless, I would suggest you find schools you might meet up with their deadline and try engage the graduate director for your program. You might be able to get a waiver to turn in your GRE score a little later than the deadline. Remember to let him know there are a very few centres in Nigeria as such, it takes a while to get a slot.
Thanks so much, I will do this

It's not easy to wait for someone to come and start positing schools that offer funding. Some things are better left for you to research. Come on, you're going for grad admission.

Get started with nysc as soon as possible and at the same time try to learn a digital skill. You don't need so much money to learn a digital skill these days. With Internet data and determination you will be fine
