Car Talk › Re: CRUISE CONTROL; Saves Or Uses More Fuel? by 9icetoo(m): 9:23pm On Oct 09, 2016 |
cruise control helps save fuel in certain conditions. it helps prevent unnecessary acceleration and deceleration. on long flats, it helps save fuel however on steep inclines, it tries to maintain the set speed by downshifting and revving the nuts out of your engine costing you fuel. so in summary, on long flats, yes. on steep inclines, not so good. |

Fix culpability at the foot of the LAWMA truck squarely and not the truck. Or did you think the trucks are designed to come to a screeching halt at the tap of the brakes? Noooo. your head dey there. its so annoying when people come online requesting for trucks to be banned. do they think the supplies in the markets and stalls fall from the sky? abi the cement, sand and other building materials magically appear in their locations? these trucks move the nation forward. without them, we would be fvcked. the lawma trucks drivers drive like maniacs though. in port Harcourt here, waste trucks are the most dangerous things you encounter on the road at night.

sooperrescue: In Nigeria, we use unleaded Regular and many cars require this grade of fuel. But majority of the other cars requires a higher fuel, premium unleaded. What do you do if you are faced with this problem? Octane Booster is your best bet. Many people still believe that we use leaded fuel and there are many new cars that is programmed to work only on leaded fuel and they are being sold brand new in Nigeria. unless you are driving a buggati veyron or any of those cars with exotic engines, it is not a requirement to use premium unleaded fuel. it is only a recommendation by manufacturers of regular cars that you use fuel with higher octane rating so you can have all the power and fuel economy promised on those cars. that e90 BMW or mecerdes c320 will not grenade its engine if run on regular fuel. the ecu will adjust timing, to accommodate the lower quality fuel and you lose mpg and power. that is all that will happen. u may hear slight pinging when the car pulls hard or climbs a hill but nothing serious. but pouring octane boosters down your corolla, Camry, accord, or civic tank is a fucking waste of money. my 2 cents. |

Say wat u know please when u suspect someone of a crime, you tell him the crime he is suspected of and process the person. that means taking him to your station, making am entry and processing the suspect. you do not empty my bag on the road side, access my fone which could have very private pictures your eyes shouldn't see without a warrant and go thru my laptop like am a convicted criminal. we have efcc to investigate financial crimes and not police. I have been reading your posts, sometimes you sound reasonable, sometimes you sound not too smart and emotional. I would also be duly informed of the need to hand over my phone to aid the investigation. I asked them in while they were questioning me and they refused to come in. it was against their code of conduct with civilians. they took my statement right in front of my door and let me be. imagine if that was in Nigeria, your goons would have bundled me to the station without charge just because I happen to live near a car that was burgled. you guys really need serious reformation. |

NB; I do all my driving with the AC on. And highway speed of not more than 120km/hr, at least for both trips. ur fuel tank has got to be more than 70 litres. fuel gauges can be misleading as they are not graduated in a completely linear manner with the tank. I have described that here on nairaland before. you should have refilled your tank at the end of those journeys and noted how many litres it took to fill your tank. that way we would have been sure of your fuel consumption. |

GAZZUZZ: what are the low and high side pressures when a.c is turned on? the pressure on the low side fluctuates BTW 65 and 70 psi. the gauge on the high side was not functioning. will get the pressure from another Ac tech later. one thing I noticed was that when the Ac tech let off some gas from the low pressure pipe, the Ac started cooling but was still working intermittently. I know we put in a can and half (estimated) of harp gas in the system after replacing the compressor two months ago. is it overcharged? my system calls for 550 grams of gas and a can of harp gas weighs 340 grams. I plan to evacuate the whole gas and use a weighing scale to weigh the gas I put in next time. will schedule a meeting with piyke to use him vacuum pump before that though. |

give us your consumption figure I.e mpg or km per litre. state the state you live in and your route. how long have been using this car and your previous car. then we will know if it's truly consuming fuel. I once met someone who drove his auto in d3 and was complaining of fuel consumption. I have also met someone who upgraded from a corolla to a v6 Camry complaining of fuel consumption. so state the above so we know if truly your car is thirsty. please don't give the "I use 3k fuel in one week" unit of measurement. |

the issue with mine is that it works intermittently. on cool days and early mornings or late evening, it works but doesn't cool as well as it should. I have changed compressor and replaced a leaking low pressure hose but the problem persists. its an automatic compressor and I'm considering changing it to a manual compressor but not the usual Peugeot compressor. it never works on a hot day. there is gas in the system. I have also replaced condenser. there is power supply to the compressor as the system is fed with 12 volts which the Ac guy verified with a light bulb tester but even with power supply, I don't get any cooling whatsoever on a hot day. the radiator and condenser fans work as well. car is Skoda Octavia with the annoying sanden compressor. any pointers? |

1) You can man up and tell your wife and her mother that you are not comfortable with the way things are and that you need your privacy.(this option is not easy because you will have to face the 'wrath' of your wife or her mother or 'both')
2) You can get a male elder in your wife's family that is 'understanding' to talk to your mother-in-law to respect you and your wife's privacy(this too is risky because it can backfire if ypur mother-in-law takes it the wrong way)
3) 'OPERATION FLUSH HER OUT"--- make your home very 'uncomfortable' for her! Old women are superstitious so you can take advantage of that, you can start by dropping strange objects in the room she sleeps whenever she visits, you can arrange for strange noises to be made close to her window in the middle of the night, if your wife travels you can even go hardcore Nollywood on her, like pretend you are carrying out strange rituals in the middle of the night or just wear all white and be dancing azonto at odd hours and make sure she sees you

Somatic: Thank you all for analysing this incident as dispassionately as you should. For those who think my mother "deliberately" failed to produce the items prior to her booking, I wish to raise a few pointers.
When she called me about the items, I told her where to go get the triangle and the extinguisher. The triangle was located at a recess on the right hand side, the extinguisher besides the spare tire. The boot floor covers that. That's how the car came.
Seeing that she couldn't get around it, I told her to get any of their personnel help get out the items. They refused to take her phone. Saying they had booked her already. By then, she had found the triangle, but couldn't get to lift the floor board.
Upon getting there, I queried them as to why the rush to book seeing that she told them I was coming to get out the items as well as try going to the house to seek it. I asked them with their experience in vehicle matters, they wouldn't have pointed out to Mum where these things are supposed to be. Oga Emmanuel asserted that they were not obligated to do that. But they are obligated to fine her unjustly. She was wearing her seatbelt, her parking lights were on cause of the rain, she wasn't going fast. Her offense; stopping to be interrogated by the FRSC.
We are all service personnel one way or the other. If I "convincingly" commit an offense, sanction me appropriately. Not speculatively. Again, on realizing the error, they would have had two choices. Either cancel the booking or bear the cost of payment. And for option 2, I honestly was open to negotiation, after all who doesn't make mistakes? But to pay in full for someone else's error when I'm not Jesus? Haba!
I have decided on some action to take even as I appreciate the options given to me here. I am willing to explore all legal avenues on this matter to ensure that I be the last person in Kaduna and hopefully Nigeria this sort of injustice by the FRSC happens to. sue them to smithereens. I dey ur back. they did not even consider the fact she was a senior citizen. they did not even bother to help her locate it even when you offered to do that via the pictures phone. bunch of idiots. no judge will rule this case ever in their favor. they should be merged with VIO. |

I had a crack on my wind shield that had nothing to do with my vision or the vision of anyone on passengers seat. The crack was caused by an overzealous Police officer. I was begged to let him go by other officers.
For cosmetic reasons, I wanted to remove it. I already called the dealer and i was given a quotation and I showed the guy. I showed him the bill I just paid for other things that were part of a make over triggered by the incidence. He refused. He booked me. I was furious not because of 2k. I was furious because I did not understand what he was meant to achieve with the booking. I told him I was going to court.
I drove into a nearby RSafety school and the officer there was like, did he ask you for money and you refused. He said I should go to court that it was malicious booking. All the officers from other units that saw the crack were all like he should not have esp as I explained to him. One said I should go and pay and avoid the stress after all over 200 thousand people are booked unjustly everyday and they pay.
I contacted the laywer who advised that the stress is much as busy person that I should write a complaint letter and see how it goes.
The summary is that the guy was brought to face me and he started lying and fidgeting.
The woman scolded him severely.
So just write a complaint and make your case clear.
It may take some time out of you but you will achieve one thing, he will never do that again. Some of the guys out there are intoxicated by the uniform and the public has to stand up to them. keep it up. its about time we stopped swallowing rubbish in this country. |

tete7000: Sorry to say this: Fire extinguisher is a very important and urgent safety equipment. Imagine there has been fire, your mum would have needed to produce it in a jiffy, so it is an offence for her not to know its whereabout. It is not enough to have a fire extinguisher, it must be strategically placed for easy and immediate access in case of fire.
Secondly the FRSC in question didn't extort but gave an official fine. The money paid goes straight into government coffer.
It is an unfortunate incident but let your mum be conversant with where those items are placed before driving her car out. In case of emergency such knowledge might save her and her car. the issue of enforcing fire extinguishers in cars is really silly to me. I will ask you a few questions; 1. is she trained to fight fires? 2. is it her duty to fight fires? 3. if she misjudges the intensity of a fire and gets injured or worse trying to fight a fire she wasn't trained to fight, will FRSC provide adequate compensation? 4. if a fire starts in the boot of your car (where your extinguisher is), do you open the boot to get out your extinguisher? in an emergency(fire), you are advised to move away (from the fire) to safety. fire extinguishers, first aid kits, torch light, towing rope, spare tire and reflective jackets are essential but not mandatory items in a car. FRSC is so wrong penalising people for not having some of these things. some cars come with run flats and do not space for spare tires. some cars do not have trunks and little or no space for fire extinguishers and will burn so fast your tiny extinguisher will be useless. I carry all I listed above for my own peace of mind but not because FRSC said so. I hate those guys. |

erico2k2: So they do not have puncture in the whole 4 years, knowing the bad state of cleanliness on our 9ja roads, In 4 years if you do not get puncture by nails or screws, something will tear your tyre, or some one will put 2much air.Im finding it strange you can use tyres for up to 4 years in 9ja no puncture in four years. the tyres were replaced last year July. the tyres came with the car in 2009. alignment issues caused the replacement. the rear tyres still had a lot of meat on them. however as recommended in the owners manual and by the Michelin tyre service center, the four tyres were replaced. this tyre center has a pressure gauge fitted to their pressure hose. this pressure gauge is calibrated and coloured from white to green to red to guide technician so as not to overinflate the tire even during fitting. these operators are regularly trained by Michelin. engage them in a discussion and you will marvel at how much they know about tyres unlike those FRSC knob heads. so tyres were always handled by pros and would have lasted longer than 6 years if not for alignment issues. 6 freaking years and same car travels to villa and back (600 odd kms) every xmas. goes to Enugu from ebonyi sometimes and a few burials and weddings outside the state in between. I am talking from personal experience here. car is a family owned kia soul. |

these two pictures show two different tyres. on one the date of manufacture (2011) can be seen clearly. on the other the date has been sanded off but its actually a 2010 dated tyre. the 2011 (newer tyre) already has cracks while the 2010 has no cracks whatsoever. none of the tyres are Chinese. the 2011 is a continental made in Germany.
