the difference isn't going to be much then. enjoy your v6. |
your attachment says it does take more fuel to run an ac even though it is minute. but it does. the writer assumes that cars are constantly being driven at 50mph where drag becomes a factor. in city driving, you rarely ever get to 30mph and as such drag is a not a factor; throwing that hypothesis/theory out of the window. you rely on what you read off the internet but not what you measure and verify yourself. do you think that internet poster did any physical measurements to back up his claim or post his opinions just like you havebeen doing. |

yemmit90:in this 21st century? if we apply all the op said and the government gets their head outta their arses to provide us good roads, we wouldn't complain so much about trucks. I admit that a few nutjobs (truckers) exist out there. |
with the current fuel scarcity which has become a trend, I guess more people are going to give diesel cars a second thought. I was in traffic two days ago when a Volkswagen golf with a SDI badge (SDI is diesel) pulled up beside me. I beckoned the driver and enquired if his engine was still diesel as it had a strange whine to it and didn't sound like a diesel at all. he informed me that unfortunately he had changed the engine and converted it to petrol after one or two issues and he regrets it. he asked after mine and I told him mine still has the original engine. the dude started telling me how he could go to Lagos and come back on almost one tank. how economical the previous engine was and how he felt invincible during fuel scarcity. now he has to queue to buy fuel and endure the insults from petrol attendants. how he wished for the days he could drive in from the wrong gate, fill up drive away to the consternation of those on the queue. he wished me well and said he hoped I keep my engine. I told him not to worry about that as the engine will most likely outlive the shell of the car itself. 805 km on 55 litres (60% short trips and city driving, 40% highway driving). how's that for economy? |
walcolm:well, I do and you don't. your world, suit yourself. meanwhile femi4 has given you the info you asked for. how you use it is up to you. |

walcolm:please don't call me names, I haven't called you one yet. do not hide behind the safety of a computer screen and spew trash. the rate of charge does not increase?! why do automakers size alternators to fit demand then? why not fit a cheaper honda fit alternator into a honda accord. have u ever seen the alternator equipped in an ambulance engine? abeg no show urself. if you have a scanner which can show live data, just perform this simple test and update your knowledge. start your car, connect the scanner and run live update. look out for engine load. turn on your high beams, your Ac blowers and Ac and tell us what happens to that engine load. do that before you come back here to call names. |
smsglory:it is true that longer journeys use less fuel per kilometer compared to shorter journeys. with regards to to the fuel gauge not moving after filling up driving for a while, this is what happens; (a). your fuel level gauge (sender) is a float usually attached the fuel pump assembly which rises and falls as your fuel level rises and falls. there is a lot of space above that float which fuel goes into right up to fuel receptacle. the float will not move until all the fuel stored here is used up (on some cars, this is up to ten liters). the float will only start moving after all that fuel on top of it is used up. and as soon as it starts moving, it really moves. this gives car owners the wrong impression that their cars use more fuel after the fuel gauge has left the full mark. |
walcolm:and the battery gets its juice from the alternator which in turn gets its power from the engine. do you get the logic here? connect a scangauge or obd Bluetooth readout to your car, lookup "engine load", turn on all electrical appliances on your car to maximum and tell me if the engine load figure does not go up. we are all here to learn. I learnt a lot here and in other fora but I swear the level of ignorance here is monumental. |
jeak123:you can only run your blower (fan) with the battery but not your Ac compressor. your compressor needs your engine to be on to work unless you have an auxiliary heating or cooling system (available in some new model vehicles). this auxiliary system runs on whatever powers your vehicle though. the Ac does not run on the car battery. |
walcolm:wrong! while your compressor is connected to the engine by a belt, it is not pumping/compressing any fluid until it is engaged. at that point it puts load on your engine which increases fuel consumption. even lights and fans load an engine and increase fuel use. the amount of fuel used to compensate for the extra load depends on the state of the engine, engine power output, amount of load etc. i am ashamed of some of the responses here. the internet is a global village and I hope readers out there do not take the responses here as a fair representation of our level of knowledge. |
if its a simple 4 banger and you can spare a few cans of beer, then you can come to my place and we can do a little troubleshooting together over the weekend. I may pinpoint the fault or I may eliminate a few things and tell you what a tech should look out for. |
nissparts:I was going to tell him the exact same thing. OP, nothing is wrong with your vehicle. the petrol in Nigeria is crap. your car runs on a higher octane petrol which is not available here so your engine adjusts timing, sacrifices fuel economy and power to run right. don't wreck that car trying to fix what wasn't broken. even the advertised mpg for ur car is rarely ever attained. add Lagos traffic to the mix and u can kiss that advertised mpg good bye. |
MyGeneration:it will not make scarcity worse. it will actually alleviate the scarcity. most petrol stations hoard petrol and sell off in bulk to black market sellers with higher margins. the petrol stations make more money doing this so they'd rather lock up their stations and sell off to black marketers. this makes it impossible for legal users like you and I to drive into a petrol station to buy petrol at the stipulated price. the black marketers now sell this petrol at almost twice the stipulated price so as to make profit and pay off the margins they paid to the unscrupulous petrol stations. it makes the scarcity worse. |
the M1 was not a success. it was seriously underpowered and lacked the handling associated with BMWs. BMW does not remember it fondly. my best BMW is the e46. lovely car. hugs the road like its on tracks. |
That is more than good. A lot of people can only dream about such high FE in highway driving talk less of city driving. |
team diesel. fuel scarcity warris DAT? on a serious note sha, i will advise anyone to queue for a few hours for a full tank than buy black market. those black market fuels have sent many engines and pumps to their graves. |
irunooboo:eat it. |
irunooboo:it is true that dangote was not behind the wheels however his brand is being tarnished by the activities of these senseless drivers who drive dangote branded trucks. in saner climes, the populace would have boycotted his products and shown him people power. trucks without lights and reflectors at their rear and sides shouldn't be allowed on our roads. FRSC is failing in this massively. they are always so quick to penalise innocent motorists while ignoring these trucks that are not road worthy and cause a higher percentage of fatal accidents on our roads. did you just blame the couple for failing to put their full lights on? do you know it is an offence to drive with your full lights when there are oncoming vehicles? it is not even courteous. for all I know this couple may have failed to see the dangote truck because another monkey behind the wheels blinded them with his FULL lights (high beams by the way). it shows how much you know about being a road user. RIP to the couple. the driver of that truck should be arrested for manslaughter. |
bayooz:1. it has a high centre of gravity and is more susceptible to rollover if something goes awry e.g a blowout. 2. the number of occupants had no factor in the event. 3. those that survived (driver) had their seat belts on and were restrained during the somersaults. those who didn't have their seat belts on were thrown about like ragdolls. 4. VIP convoys in Nigeria drive like they have a death wish. they constantly violate speed limits and leave very little room for error with their manner of driving hence the high casualty figures whenever they get involved in an accident. they may have been travelling at over 140km/hr. 5. anything could have burst the tire e.g pothole, manufacturers defect, over inflation, road debris e.tc. my bet is on over inflation. 6. occupants who didnt have their belts on were flung out. accidents do not respect persons. 7. traction control, abs and co won't do shit in a blowout. your presence of mind, calmness, speed of thought, lady luck and skill as a driver will see you through. 8. only forensic (which we lack here) can tell that. 9. I doubt it was overloaded. he had several other cars in the convoy to carry stuffs. |
Tayo2014:minutes or hours is spent idling the car in traffic will reduce the miles or kilos your petrol can take you. it all factors in. |
laksides:its not poverty. its about knowing how much you spend on certain things. folks about who are way better off and earn more still care to know how much they spend on petrol, diesel or transport fares. it will help in making a budget. it will actually help you plan your expenses, save more, detect when your vehicle is having issues and a whole lot more. it takes less than two minutes to work out the maths. two minutes isn't a long time now, is it? a lot of folks in Nigeria cry about poverty cos they have never sat down to work out how much they earn, how much they spend and what they spend it on. information as minute as this will actually help one in planning. my 2 cents. |
peterjero:lewis races on a track in a race car and not on the streets in an underpowered sedan. defensive driving? really? |
gmyguy:go and check their 0_60 times. stop toyin with your life and that of others. used to do this but now know better. the only reward that awaits is pain and grief if you survive. |
going to print this and keep. as we can all see, there is no provision in there for expired tires or cracked wind screen. these two are FRSC cashcows at the moment. they milk unsuspecting motorists based on these two daily. a smashed wind screen impairs vision while a cracked wind screen doesnt . as such it doesn't pose any danger. a worn out tire is not same as an expired tire. of which FRSC cannot say a tire is expired cos no tire carries an expiry date but rather a manufacture date. also note that having a luggage or two on your roof. rack is not overloading unless the luggage exceeds the dimensions of your car and makes the vehicle unstable. the roof rack was installed in some cars to carry load and not for fancy. |
plan to do a boost leak test on the turbo pipes of the Octavia. fixed one turbo pipe boot that was leaking. so far no oil stains found underneath unlike before. turbo whistle has gotten a bit loud lately and the car smokes a bit upon brisk application of throttle. also plan to blank the egr hole during the test. it has messed up my intake that was cleaned out sometime in august last yea and i have a feeling my egr doesnt seal properly. my fault though as I do a lot of short distance journeys. intend to make the tools for the test using 2 inch silicone hose about 10 cm in length, 2 appropriately sized jubilee clips to secure the silicone hose, 2 inch PVC pipe capped at one end (5 cm in length), valve and a bicycle pump. |
No 14 though. A lot of people are culprits. Kai, saw one guy seriously revving a Honda accord that got stuck in a ditch. I'm sure he's hunting for a new gearbox by now. |
Except you are on a race track and an avid racer, you have no business comparing a RWD to A FWD just because you can drive from Oshodi to Apapa. For all intents and purposes in our daily grind, a FWD setup will give you all the handling and power you need. And like Siena pointed out above, they have even better traction is certain situations. Our roads in Nigeria are littered with debris, loose soil and in certain places, muddy. FWD cars will negotiate these sort of roads with better traction than a rear wheel drive since the weight of the engine is pressing down on the driving wheels giving it better grip. Torque steer is a non issue with the standard corollas and accords we drive here where HP is often below 250 (six cylinders included) How often do we ever get to use up to 120 HP. I've monitored my HP readout from my scanner a few times and logged them and have never ever got the car to use up to 80 HP. So whats torque steer got to do in everyday driving? Even RWD setups have Torque steer as has been pointed out. Handling is much more than drive configuration. Lots of other things like size, weight distribution, suspension and tire size affect handling. Smaller cars handle better. A Ford focus, mini cooper (old type) or the lotus will hold lines better than most RWD cars and register amazing times and shame a lot of RWD setups in a slalom test which is the epic test for handling. Better stopping distance? Let me ask the Benz guy who rammed my rear two weeks ago. |
patlead:you may be able to get better mpg if you do a proper tune up as well as use a lower weight engine oil. start by getting brand new OEM spark plugs, replacing bad plug wires, replacing or cleaning air filter. making sure brakes are not binding. setting your alignment properly. inflating tires properly. driving less aggressively. |
[quote author I think I need to equip my vehicle with at least 4 cameras, one facing front, one facing rear and two to cover the left and right side. Any ideas on such a rig that can record continuously for 12 hours as well as GPS/time-stamp the video, since I want to be able to review my journeys in the hopes of improving both skill and technique and correcting any errors I might have made in future drives?[/quote]I'd like such a contraption too. |
Kashif:the heat generated will not burn the fluid instantly. its the heat cycling which happens over time that degrades the fluid. the fluid eventually fails and leaves the owner with a dead transmission. that's a key reason why a lot of transmissions fail in Nigeria where they are used in *extreme* conditions. |
