Car TalkRe: Engine Oil Immediately Turns Black, After Some Days by 9icetoo(m): 8:53am On Jan 29, 2017

Car TalkRe: Most Practical Location For A Fire Extinguisher by 9icetoo(m): 8:47am On Jan 29, 2017
under the drivers seat provides easy access but can be a very dangerous place.
like coolgent posted, these extinguishers can roll out and get trapped under the brake pedal which most times leads to an accident.
secondly, in the event of a crash and the vehicle somersaults, the extinguisher which weighs over three kilos becomes a projectile and could hurt whoever it gets in contact with.
some cars were designed to hold the fire extinguisher under the drivers seat. the fire extinguisher compartment under the car seat comes with a strap for securing the extinguisher in place to prevent it from rolling out or flying around when the car rolls over.
if u decide to keep yours under the car seat, make sure you secure it with a wedge or something to prevent it from rolling out to the drivers foot well. it is a sure recipe for disaster. a lady crashed her crv two years ago cos her shoe got stuck under her brake pedal.

Trust me I definitely understand. Much more than you think.

You make it sound as if Nigeria is on Mars where it's the only place that they use the wrong viscosity in engines, and you Nigerian mechanics knows best.

How can you determine that he needs a completely new engine when you haven't even triaged the car?

I will accept that it may be cheaper in the long run, whether due to lack of skills or cost of parts, to install a replacement engine versus rebuilding what the client has now.
it will be cheaper to just buy a used engine. dollar is trading at approximately N500 to 1 dollar. the cost of new parts at this exchange rate makes repairing the engine an exorbitantly expensive option.
op firstly find out why your oil leaked out. like the others above have posted, you need a tokunbo engine.

Thanks
there's lake rice in Lagos. local rice is available in all big stores (shoprite and co) all over Nigeria. if you have relatives in ebonyi or anambra, you can contact them to send some for you. if you were in pH, I would have got some for you from abakaliki.

And how do you know both of them didn't take care of their vehicles? huh

If a man who is travelling for his wedding with his wife doesn't take care of d vehicle he will be travelling with, then who else will? huh

And if a young guy who just came into the country to enjoy the new year in style doesn't tune up his vehicle to ensure uninterrupted flexing, please who else will? huh
on my way back to pH from the xmas hols, a Lexus rx300 2001 model sped past me at the boundary between IMO and rivers state. I was doing 110 as the road was smooth. this guy sped past me as if I was doing 50km/hr. I pointed out the car to my wife and told her that the Lexus was carrying a family whilst travelling at that speed. if he looses a tyre at that speed and looses control of that SUV due to its high center of gravity, do you think the outcome will be a good one?
a colleague had a rollover in that same SUV on the 29th of December 2014 inside portharcourt. he wasn't even on the highway yet!
people speed in SUVs as if they are driving Ferraris. don't blame Lexus, blame the drivers of Lexus cars.

plastic does not foam when boiled in water. put your pure water sachet in water and boil it to see if it will foam. you probably bought expired rice or rice with preservatives or what nafdac described as biological organisms above acceptable levels.
but make I ask sha, is there no local rice being sold in your area?
cos I wnder why someone is buying foreign rice when we r trying to save our economy in any little way we can.
buy local next time. it will help everyone, including you.

Op seriously I want to buy the so called plastic rice. Tell me where you bought it, I need large quantity. The fact is that I don't believe in all these plastic rice brouhaha. To be sincere plastic material of any form is much more costly than any rice you can think of. What's the benefit of using plastic material to produce fake rice that would definitely be sold cheaper intead of employing the same material for more economic venture. Please spare me all those thrash unless you are able to show me where I will get plastic rice in tones at an affordable price. There is what is called plastic pellet, people often visit where they are made and upload the videos on Facebook claiming they witness the making of plastic rice. Plastic pellets are just plastic materials made in pellets for the purpose of ease in packaging transportation from one place to another. As for the picture above, that can only be your remaining Christmas/new year rice but bloggers must chop na
your brain is in order. I tried to explain this tova colleague but he just couldn't get his head around it. itcwill cost a lot more to make plastic pellets to sell as rice.
Nigeria is truly doomed with the level of intelligence displayed on this nairaland.
op, take that bag as evidence to nafdac office so they can authenticate your claim and carry out investigations if truly that is plastic rice

I passed this road when going to immigration office to get my passport two weeks back, It's really scary and such a death trap. The Government attention needs to be drawn to that road for barricade against that valley.
the FRSC will not deem it fit now to go and cordon off that area and put up warning signs, rather they'll go to a section of the pothole infested road just a few meters from a police check point to harass motorists checking for fire extinguisher and 'expired' tires.
the government agency saddled with making our roads safe do not know their jobs I swear. this country is a joke

Car TalkRe: Implications Of Expired Tires by 9icetoo(m): 10:29pm On Jan 01, 2017
sooperrescue:
9icetoo, It is true that Michelin says 5 years to inspect. Is the Michelin UK or Nigeria? Do they produce the same tyres for Nigeria and Uk? Do we really need all season tyres in Nigeria? Do we need winter tyres in Nigeria? Have you driven on a wintry road full of ice or snow? The four years is the right age for a tyre to last in our kind of weather. Do not say that Texas is hotter than Nigeria because they dont have a high incidence rate of burst tyres. I have inspected tyres from a popular car lot in Ikeja and the man claimed that all his cars comes from Texas and they all came with all season tyres with Temp B rating. This year, the FRSC will begin inspecting tyres not only for the expiry dates but for speed and temperature ratings. Imagine an S class fitted with T speed rating. That is suicide alert. Abi the recession mean say you nor go buy better tyre to save your life and property?
I have driven on wintry roads with snow and ice. some of us have been out of this country you know.
having temperature b tyres coming from Texas does not makes the tires expired tires. the tires won't withstand higher speeds on hot surface. those tires are actually cheaper. I've also seen tires with a threadwear indicator of 250 and it was not a Chinese tire. I am talking of pirelli here.
I will say it again and anywhere and I will defend it, tires don't have expiry date. use and other factors determine the useful life of a tire.
all season tires give the best of both worlds in use but not in performance. an all season tire will not give you the grip a winter tire will give you on a snowy road.
an all season tire will not give you the same grip and performance as a dedicated summer tire.
I spent a year in Michelin Nigeria. their formulation is from France. the tires made in France and that made in Nigeria are the same for the same threadwear, speed and temperature rating. I was in testing. when a batch fails the test, it is either discarded or used to premix a batch of lower specification.
I am waiting for that FRSC dunce that will stop me to check for expiry date. kam Mara ma ana aru tire na be nna ya.
Car TalkRe: Implications Of Expired Tires by 9icetoo(m): 2:35pm On Jan 01, 2017
tell them adanny01. tell them. Michelin said after five years, inspect. pirelli said same. I wonder why idiots who have never formulated a tire compound in their lives will impose an expiry date on a product they know nothing about. a tire can expire even after two years depending on so many factors yet some idiots will stop me on a pothole-tire smashing-unmarked highway to check my tires. we still have law courts; I dey wait for them.
Car TalkRe: Over Economic Camry Getting Me Worried. by 9icetoo(m): 9:39pm On Dec 24, 2016
Ricmayak1:
@poster. What you have explained is possible. Prior to repair, your engine was running rich. There is a possibility that the new A/F sensor attached to the exhaust manifold is faulty or not the correct replacement part, causing your engine to run very lean.

If that is the case, the engine might not last. In fact, it's failure can be catastrophic as the engine will be operating at very high internal/combustion temperature.

When an engine is running lean, it consumes less than normal quantity of fuel. When it runs rich, it consumes more than normal quantity of fuel.

Don't drive it harshly or do frequent long journeys yet.

Also ensure that your cooling system is sound at this time and I hope you are not using 20w50 viscosity oil. Regularly check your coolant level too.

Regards...
that engine is running lean. eventually it will grenade itself.
you will have one of the con rods sticking out of the block.
the tell tale sign of hard starting in the mornings is the first pointer.
please don't forget to post pictures of the engine op when it fails, so that others will learn.
my younger bro just replaced his golf engine cos of this.
conrod went through the block after a piston melted through due to the extreme temps generated from running lean. the spark plug melted too.

Car TalkRe: How Many Nigerians Will This “the Young Shall Grow Bus” Kill? by 9icetoo(m): 12:26am On Dec 20, 2016
that's unburnt fuel and not CO2 op. CO2 is odourless and colourless. 90% of heavy duty vehicles are culpable. if the government wants to get rid of stuffs like this, then it needs a very robust and expansive rail system first, then enforce strict compliance with emissions laws (which we don't have unfortunately). else this your proposal to ban buses like this will spike the cost of transportation of humans and goods in such a way that you have never witnessed ever in your lifetime. trust me.
TravelRe: I Witnessed A Terrible Accident In Ogun State by 9icetoo(m): 7:37pm On Dec 18, 2016
road courtesy would have prevented this accident. the other trailer driver is supposed to slow down when being overtaken.
FRSC thinks its speed that kills. wrong; its often bad road manners that cause most accidents.
I have witnessed road rage amongst these trailer drivers severally while travelling. its also common amongst bus drivers.
I wonder what they smoke before going behind the wheels.
TravelRe: Fuel Tanker Accident In Cross River. Residents Rush To Scoop Fuel by 9icetoo(m): 7:31pm On Dec 18, 2016
some drivers deliberately crash their trucks to avoid censure after fraudulently selling their products. I hope this is not one of those cases cos this looks like a well calculated crash.
or this driver slept off behind the wheels.
as usual FRSC will blame it on over speeding without carrying out s thorough analysis of the accident.
I swear if you go to that command a month from now, you won't a file about this accident.
Car TalkRe: Radiator Fan Problem by 9icetoo(m): 9:54am On Dec 12, 2016
op has plans yo kill that engine. kwontinue.
do a small test op. start the car, let someone else sit inside and fix their eyes on the temp gauge. instruct that person to call your attention if the needle gets to the 3/4 mark or turn off the car. op, stay in front of the car and watch the fan. if it comes on before the guy in the car calls your attention or turns off the car, then you have nothing to worry about. if you go ahead and kazeemize that fan connection, then ladipo woulndnt mind having you around in a few years time when you go for a new engine.

charlie44nike:
Thanks gazzuz. But what if it's not the fan? What If it is the ac itself that comes on after the car engine is switched off?
the Ac cannot come on after the engine is switched off. the compressor which is the main component in your Ac cannot work without your engine. like Gazzuzz explained, your coolant temp is high which triggers the fan to come on. it happens on my Skoda too. the fans come on sometimes after I turn off the car usually after long drives with the Ac on. the condenser heats up my radiator which turns on the fans briefly to bring the temp down. its normal. it is even written in my car manual. read your owners manual, it may be written there too.
Car TalkRe: Closed by 9icetoo(m): 7:31pm On Dec 08, 2016
gazzuzz, my Ac matter don tire me. like u rightly guessed, my compressor was weak. I changed it. while changing it, we discovered it has already started wearing itself out and had deposited the black fluid in the lines and condenser. while flushing the lines and condenser, plastic particles (apparently stripped from one of the Ac lines) was shooting out of the condenser. a decision was made to replace the condenser with a new one.
so a tokunbo compressor was installed, some suspect hoses replaced, all hoses flushed, evaporator flushed (in situ with expansion valve). the expansion valve and evaporator were not pulled out but were flushed with a vulcanizers machine while in place. (its a nightmare to loosen the dashboard of the Octavia to get to the evaporator).
however after this fix, Ac worked well for only three days and packed up again. I checked the low pressure line for gas and the black goo came out again. meaning the compressor has worn itself out again after 3 days!. its costing me a fortune to fix this Ac. what do you advise as the way forward?

Car TalkConsistent Failure Of Slave Clutch Cylinder. by 9icetoo(op): 10:47pm On Oct 31, 2016
I drive a manual Skoda octavia. for some weeks now, I've been having issues. I have had to replace the slave clutch cylinder ( I hope that's the name);( the one mounted on the gear box) three times in two months now. the third replacement just gave way today and I have been informed that the reason is that my clutch plate and disk are worn.
before the third clutch cylinder gave way today, I had the following symptoms; difficulty getting into third gear and crunching sound when getting into second gear.
before the second one gave way, I experienced massive juddering when setting off from a standstill. this stopped after I replaced it with the third one that has just packed up.

is the theory about the clutch plate and disk being worn true?
must I change the release bearing as well while changing the clutch plate and disk?

longer city trips of about 15km on weekends.
does better (5l/100km) on highways crushing at 90-100km an hour. pardon the picture quality. that is actually 6.6 l/100km
