FRONTPAGE:Another proof that some Nigerian used cars are better than Tokunbos. A 2008 camry should throw error codes when the transmission is faulty. Scan the car, get the codes and work from there. It might turn out to be something you can sort out if properly guided. |
adanny01:Unless your accord can do fifteen kilometers per litre which unfortunately it can't. Best it can do is approximately 12 Km/Litre . I presently buy diesel at 120 a litre. I filled my tank at N115 a litre at Iyana Itire in Lagos. It cost me N3934 to travel from PH to Lag. And will cost less to go back. I don't think the accord can beat that. My ex (camry 2.4L) does Ph to Lag with about 55 litres. At the present cost of fuel (N87), that's still more expensive at N4785. |
lungwun:It's a 2006 skoda octavia with the 1.9Tdi engine. It thankfully doesn't have DPF (that stuff is giving my friend who owns an E90 nightmares). I drive carefully though and never exceeded 2500 rpm though this didn't really seem to affect MPG as my instantaneous MPG display showed. My display MPG at the end of my journey was 4.4L/100KM. Although i have figured it has an error of 0.6. So with that in mind, I know I actually did 5L/100KM which was spot on when i did the physical calculation. |
Just did a trip to lagos. Covered 670 kilometers from ph to lagos and used 32.78 liters of diesel. My range indicator showed i can be in ph on remaining fuel before car will sputter to a halt. When not stuck in traffic its more economical than petrol. |
naijafury:Minna- Awka does not do any justice to the question. He wants to have actual kilometers (highway i guess). To OP, buy the v6 if fuel economy isn't really what keeps you awake at night. Its quieter than the i4, will last longer if maintained properly and is cheaper to replace should there be need for that. |
GAZZUZZ:Will talk to him about it if he hasn't bought another engine yet. |
your idle issue might have been related to the throttle position sensor which may have reset itself. Nissans are known to have this issue. If no codes are present at the moment, then throttle away bro. Glad your problems are over. You are lucky the missed timing didn't wreck your engine. My friend is presently sourcing for a 1AZ FSE engine after his mechanic missed the timing after changing his head gasket. the valves all went kaput as soon as the car was started. |
Nice work. Will be doing wifeys city sometime next year. It should be due for a valve adjustment then. |
Interesting. That's some wear. Following the thread. |

If its running lean, maybe. U sure say those village people never remember you?. Lol |
As usual, the blame goes to the trailer. No one has bothered to find out the facts about the accident. Op, how did you come about your conclusion? I can see the accident happened on a dual carriage way. Question 1: Who had the right of way? The bus or the truck? Question 2? Was it a head on collision? Question 3? Was any of the vehicles stationary before the accident (was the truck or bus parked along the highway infringing oncoming traffic?). Question 4: Was any other vehicle involved and or did any other incident lead to that accident? I ask this because we are quick to assign blame to this truck drivers. Sometimes when i travel, it marvels me how some people manage to get home alive in this country. A lot of people have no regard for road signs, overspeed, overtake recklessly, drive too slowly, hug the speed lane and even the entire road, switch lanes without signaling and checking our sides and rear, brake unnecessarily because we couldn't anticipate, cut off other cars and trucks after overtaking (commercial buses love this) and reverse on the highway (YES! I have seen people do this), drive against traffic even when there was no authorized diversion e.t.c. All I am trying to say is, let's not always be too hasty to lay blames on these truck drivers. They are actually better drivers than a lot of us. And to those saying they should be banned from the road during the day, Nigeria will grind to a halt the day that rule is passed. They move this economy. It's not just going to work. |
chamber2:Your top has no business with your serpentine belt. Change your mechanic. Ask around for a reputable mech. Where in the east do you reside? A poster wrote something here about oil contaminating the new belts from leaking seals. Check your pulleys especially the tensioner, water pump and air conditioner pulley. On a skoda, whenever the serpentine belts start failing, the culprit is usually the alternator pulley. I believe a pulley is at fault in your car. Finding Which one it is will depend on the troubleshooting skills of the mechanic. |
Any of the pulleys could be defective, causing the pulley to seize in operation and snapping the belt. Op should inspect these pulleys using a competent mech and buy an original belt. |
kingreign:Tears are streaming down my face. You just made my day. . My stomach still hurts. |
Lesson 5 causes so many unexplained accidents. The victim usually isn't alive to say why he ended up in a ditch or wrapped round a tree. |
If Gazzuzz is right then you have three options. 1. Do a rebuild or buy a new one as he suggested if you are uncomfortable with the rattle. 2. Try using a heavier oil like a 10w or 20w to see if the noise goes away. 3. Drive it till it quits if the rattle doesn't really bother you and then buy a new engine since the cost of a rebuild is almost same as a new engine. |
chi4ik4:Did you read the post? Did you look at the pics? Smhfu |
iukpe:You are most likely the only right thinking dude on this thread. I wish more Nigerians think critically like you. |
Come, where that turbocharged camry guy? I'm still waiting for pictures. |
emperoracro:I don't know how to test turbos of that model. I know turbos don't kick in until a certain RPM. I used a scan tool to check mine and boost pressure reported from the MAP sensor was within spec. ringing is a whole different ball game. The cylinder bores would have to be measured assuming it is suffering from low compression. Then what size of rings and pistons to be fitted would be determined from the measurements. A mech can remove the turbo and inspect it to see if the turbines still behave as they should. Check for leaks in the turbo pipings as well if you are checking the turbo. Remember my earlier post though; if the fuel economy is still okay, you might as well continue driving the bus like that. Please note that diesel engines from your bus era were not particularly fast. In fact, they were slow pokes and took forever to get up to speed. So what you might think is sluggish acceleration might actually be normal. |
emperoracro:Thick black smoke on startup is normal if it clears within 15 seconds or so. That's diesel that wasn't burnt completely during startup. White smoke when you accelerate hard means a). coolant being burnt (not likely as your bus will most likely have water in the radiator now), b). unburnt diesel. Scenario b will most likely be as a result of a million and one things. It will take a competent diesel mechanic to narrow it down (good luck finding one). If the fuel economy isn't too bad, you can drive it till it stops moving while saving up for a new engine. If you have the resources and the time, get it fixed. Since this is a commercial bus, I do not think you want it sleeping around in a mech workshop workshop when it it can be out there making some cool cash for ya. Like Siena said, it won't be an easy undertaking getting it fixed which is why many peeps go down the 'change engine route'. It's entirely my opinion though. |
Does NNPC or any service station have the right to determine to whom; quantity and to what container (receptor) it sells PMS to? NO. We operate a free market and capitalist economy. Lawyers in this country are a disgrace. I wonder why this practice has gone on unchallenged for a long time and has come to be accepted as the norm. I challenged an Oando fuel attendant a few months ago about this when he insisted I pay 300 Naira for buying PMS in a 'gallon'. The most unfortunate thing about the incident was that fellow Nigerians there supported the attendant and were annoyed that I might make the attendants stop selling to people with 'gallons'. ![]() I know some unscrupulous elements buy obscene quantities of PMS during scarcity to sell at 'black markets' which informed the decision not to sell to people with 'gallons'. However, this does not solve the problem but actually worsens the problem. Black market prices create a domino effect on the prices of services and goods from SME's which creates an artificial inflation and the cycle goes on. I wonder why the DPR and NNPC have not come out to address this. Even the Nigerian Police is asleep on this matter. They should be out there confiscating these black market PMS and prosecuting the offenders. The confiscated PMS could even be used to power their operational vehicles (free fuel). Instead they are out there shooting stray bullets at innocent civilians. ![]() I hope somebody with some grey matter upstairs in a position that matters reads this. It's discriminatory not to sell to PMS to people with 'gallon'. There is no law banning such in Nigeria. People buy kerosene and Diesel in 'gallons'. It is a crime though to buy the PMS and resell it in gallons. I hope I passed a message across. We need to challenge this rubbish. I blame subsidy sha. Cos in a truly free market, NNPC will be begging me to come and buy even with waterproof. |
bigrovar:Op this is the gospel truth. Your car is okay. |
Timing belt or serpentine belt? If serpentine belt, check that your pulleys are rolling freely and aren't seizing up. Also check your belt adjuster. If timing belt, make sure you buy the original and not those N1500 belts. |
Eluquenson, the Camry is one of the most reliable cars out there. I owned one and can vouch for toyotas craftsmanship. Like you, I changed my at with the recommended fluid. I changed a whole lot of things as well to keep it in the best condition. However, when I was about to sell it, someone here on naira land, thought that the reason I made the changes (including atf), was because the car was giving me issues. Lol. A lot of people abuse the Camry because of its reliability. Hence I put the caveat "if you know the service history" to the guy who wants to buy a car. He is on a tight budget you know and might not easily afford a new gear box like your friend. The man who bought my Camry still thanks me. Like i said, if he is sure of the service history, its his call. |
yak:yak, a 99 automatic camry is almost 2 decades old. And i can bet you the nigerian user never for once changed the transmission fluid. If the gearbox packs up during your ownership, you will be forced to cough out some scarce resources to fix it or replace it. The gearbox is not cheap to rebuild or replace either. You are a civil servant i guess so might not bechanging the car any time soon so that throws the second hand value consideration out of the window. I suggested a manual cos manuals are almost bullet proof and will serve you quite a long time till you have enough cash to buy a brand new or tokunbo. However, if you come across a decent auto and you know the service history then go for it. Last bullet; a clutch disk costs less than 3k to replace, an automatic transmission costs at least 30k to replace and without warranty. Your choice. |

57mpg in city driving is enough reason to use a diesel. 50mpg on a recent highway trip was even amazing. It may not be as quiet as a similarly sized petrol engine but its not as loud as the old diesels. And i dont fret over fuel scarcity. |
