1. It is the candidate who must submit the name of his running mate, not the party.
2. The running mate is chosen(not elected) by the candidate. It is only after being jointly elected at the general polls the VP's position becomes statutorily independent of the president.
3. Within the window grace of INEC, any candidate can choose to replace his CHOSEN running mate. No running mate has the power to refuse replacement. In the first place he/she never contested for any post.

Everyone understands the concept of the placeholder…

However, the candidate cannot simply replace the running-mate…
There are specific provisions required for the replacement of a running-mate.

The assumption is that there are already agreements in place…
But nonetheless it would be a very STICKY situation if a running-mate goes rogue.
