PoliticsNigeria Seals N4.5trn Trade Pact With UK by abagoro(op): 7:46pm On Jul 21, 2015
The Nigerian Exports Promotion Council (NEPC) and the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) have sealed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to increase the level of trade between Nigeria and the United Kingdom to about N4.5 trillion by 2020.

The pact, according to NEPC, would see both countries coming up with deliberate strategies to boost the level of non-oil exports owing to the decline in oil revenue as well as boosting the volume of bilateral trade from the £8 billion (N2.4 trillion) as of the end of 2014 to £15 billion (N4.57 trillion) by 2020. The Executive Secretary of NEPC, Olusegun Awolowo, signed the MoU on behalf of the council, while the President of NBCC, Mr. Dapo Adelegan, signed on behalf of the chamber.

Awolowo said the agency has been at the forefront for diversifying the Nigerian economy, noting that this had been further reinforced by the recent decline in the price of oil in the global market. While admitting that the drop in the price of oil has led to reductions in government revenue with pronounced negative effects on different sectors of the economy, he said the NEPC has identified 13 National Strategic Export Products to replace oil. He said the potentials of the products, which cut across key sectors of the economy would be maximised through investments, capacity development, innovation and formidable partnerships.

The need to promote the expiration of these products, according to him, was what inspired the pact between the NEPC and the Chamber.

The 13 products include palm oil, cocoa, cashew, sugar, rice, iron ore, metals, aluminium and auto parts.

Others are petroleum products, fertilizer/urea, petrochemicals and methanol.

NAHCO commences cargo operations
at Enugu Airport
July 21, 2015 |

Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (Nahco aviance) has
commenced full cargo operations at the Akanu Ibiam International
Airport, Enugu.
Chinwe Chiji-Nnorom, chief financial officer of the company, who
spoke for Norbert Bielderman, CEO, who is on vacation, said the
opening of the two warehouses, one within the airport, and the
other a few metres from the airport, would further enhance the
development of the air cargo business in the South East, and the
country as a whole.

Bielderman had only few weeks ago inspected the warehouses
where he directed that it must start full operations before he
embarked on his vacation.
He also used the visit to meet with the Customs hierarchy at the
Enugu Area Command where the modalities for effective cargo
operations were agreed upon.

But speaking in Lagos, Chiji-Nnorom said the opening of the
Enugu warehouses was a major milestone for the company in its
determination to ensure that the economy of Nigeria was further
developed through the development of other airports in the country
outside of Lagos Airport.

The same excellent services Nahco aviance is known for in Lagos
would be available for all users of the company’s services at the
Enugu Airport, she assured.
“Nahco aviance would not rest on its oars in its continued efforts
at providing excellent services to its clients whether in Lagos,
which is our West Africa hub, Port Harcourt, Abuja, Kano, Kaduna,
Owerri or Enugu,” she said.

Nahco aviance is a Nigerian diversified enterprise with interests in
aviation cargo, aircraft handling, passenger facilitation, crew
transportation and aviation training. The company currently
serves more than 35 airlines at seven airports across Nigeria, with
plans to expand operations to other African countries. It handles
about 70 percent of domestic and foreign airlines operating in
Nigeria.

It was incorporated on December 6, 1979, as an aviation servicing
company but started operations in April 1979, with the
commissioning of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport,
Lagos.

Jonathan did so much for Ijaw people but I think a few Ijaw people swallowed his effort and everything? It's time we hold them responsible because the next moment they will bring out our money and encourage our youth to go and fight for their benefits and they will stand out as group leaders to negotiate only for their benefits. Instead of asking for development of the oil communities during meetings with companies, they will settle for hughe contracts and the youths will still become their slaves working for them to pay them peaknuts waiting for another fight when it seems their contract is about to end. YOUTHS OF IJAW PLEASE WISE UP!!! This multinational companies present pays off more than a few people collecting contract. just check it out. STOP AND THINK.
Well written. Empower the people and not select croonies. Jonathan did not do a lot for Ijaws like you insinuated. Go back to my posts when he was new in 2010 and read my priority for him. The 1st was to invest a lot in seaport at Bayelsa with a link highway to East-West road and attendant bridges. That alone will enpower a lot of youths and open up remote communities to the world. A man who gives you raw cash does not like you but a man who creates avenue for you to earn a living is your true friend.

2ndly I expected him encouraging loose autonomy of States that would pave way for semi-fiscal federalism.

Since he is out and none of that was done, I expect wise Ijaw leaders to demand a Seaport from Buhari government as a precursor to economic freedom.

That is why I was one of those that fought hard for Buhari's emergence. Nigeria has always had good policies on paper but corruption and impunity destroys implementation. http://barasolutions.com/mainGuardian/sunday-magazine-sp-509870158/161099-ita-a-number-of-factors-didn-t-work-in-tinapa-s-favour

Mr. Christian Ita is the Chief Press Secretary/Special
Assistant to Governor Lyel Imoke of Cross River State. He
explains government’s dream, challenges and plans for
Tinapa in this interview with ANIETIE AKPAN.
What was government’s idea regarding Tinapa?
GOVERNMENT’S dream for Tinapa is to turn it into a
global shopping hub and tourism resort, as is the case with
Dubai.
The challenge we had was that the place was not
originally gazetted. It was supposed to be a free trade
zone, yet you still have customs operating there. The roads
from Calabar to Aba and Calabar to Makurdi are not good;
the Calabar River has not been dredged and ships that are
supposed to berth here first go to Onne and these are all
the factors militating against the success of Tinapa.
Cross River invested about N18 billion on Tinapa and you
are aware that because of the debt the present government
inherited from the last administration, Cross River has
already reached its threshold on borrowing; meaning that
we cannot even borrow. Now cross River spends at least
N100 million to maintain Tinapa every month and the
current administration has done everything to make Tinapa
work, which is why they bring in all sort of things into
Tinapa, like the Tinapa Knowledge City, Ebony Live
Television and the Water Park, which was not there before.
If you go there today, the small money they are making is
from the hotel or water park. So the state government has
done everything possible to make Tinapa to work.
Why is government developing another Summit Hill when
Tinapa is there?
Again, it is because of Tinapa that the new development
area is being developed and that is the Summit Hills, where
state government is building the International Convention
Centre (ICC). There is a new road government has
constructed because it realized that getting to Tinapa from
the city centre is about 14 kilometre drive, but this new
industrial development shortens the distance to Tinapa by
almost eight or nine kilometres and bring Tinapa closer to
the city centre.
Then of course, part of the money that was borrowed to
build Tinapa was from banks and AMCON is the agency
that buys over toxic bank assets. So, rather than allow
AMCON to take it over, we negotiated and AMCON is not
just taking over Tinapa, it is investing another N26 billion
in Tinapa to get it working. Tinapa is in Cross River and
nobody is taking it away from Cross River. If Tinapa works,
it is to the glory of Cross River because most of the people
that work there are Cross Riverians. So AMCON is
investing another N26 billion to build the entertainment
aspect within Tinapa aimed at increasing patronage.
The first problem in conceiving Tinapa was that all the
factors were not under the control of the state government.
All the factors that we needed to make Tinapa work, none
was under the control of the state government. There was
no policy and Tinapa was never gazetted. You call it free
trade zone, but customs are there, which is why we keep
having this back and forth argument. If you buy something
at Tinapa now, customs are waiting for you at the gate. Is
that the same thing in Dubai?
Again, Tinapa was also predicated on the assumption that
about 25 flights will come into Calabar every day and may
be 80 percent of those flying in are going to Tinapa, but
that is not the case now.
The Ibo businessmen who are supposed to make use of
Tinapa cannot because the road between Aba and Calabar
is bad.
Similarly, the northern states that are supposed to
use the road from North East/Central to Calabar cannot do
so because of the bad roads and the low canopy at Ikom
Bridge. The Calabar channel into Calabar port has not
been dredged and heavy ships cannot berth. So these are
the factors militating against Tinapa and its dream.

What message do you have for the Federal Government?

The message is simple. The Federal Government should
help Tinapa to work by doing what they need to do. For
Tinapa to work the Calabar River must be dredged for ships
to berth; the highways linking the South-East, South-South,
North-East and North Central states have to be fixed and
there should be proper regulatory policy for Tinapa. Then
the issue of customs has to be addressed. These are the
issues working against Tinapa and none of them are in the
hands of the state government.
Notwithstanding, the state government has come to the
rescue by retailing some of the facilities. For instance, the
state government has given out one of those emporiums to
General Electric (GE) to commence their training school
which will commence in the next one or two months. All of
that is to just get Tinapa working. We also have the Tinapa
Knowledge City, the Ebony Live, which has employed over
100 people. Even the Summit Hills is to make Tinapa work.
Apart from Abuja and Lagos, Calabar is the next destination
for conferences in Nigeria. We are building a multi-purpose
conference centre and this thing is being marketed all over
the world. It will be ready in December and opened for
business next February. So right now, Summit Hills is being
marketed as a world travel event all over the world and
bookings are coming from all over the world. When people
are coming, they will naturally go to Tinapa because the
monorail is being constructed to link the Summit Hills and
Tinapa. Already piling work on the monorail has started
and will be completed in about 10 to 12 months. So all
these are the additions to make Tinapa and Calabar work
generally.

Where is the place of the local investors in all these?

The biggest problem we have is actually that our people’s
approach to opportunities being developed here is poor.
These things are throwing up opportunities, direct and
indirect jobs and lots of money is coming in because lots of
events are holding in Calabar that are not government
related and our people need to key in. Even the hoteliers
are making a kill and our people need to seize these
opportunities and tap into them and not waiting for
government to share money. The government is creating an
enabling environment for them to take advantage.
Whilmer company alone is currently employing about 2,
000 workers and it is estimated that in the next five years,
Whilmer alone will provide employment to at least 30,000
people. The population of Cross River is about three million
and one company alone is providing jobs to about 30,000,
while the state government’s entire civil service is about
19,000. So these investments are throwing up job
opportunities. It is just for our people to wake up and take
advantage because it is going to be competitive. That is
one of the reasons why the state government has built the
Institute of Technology (ITM) and management in Ugep to
provide skilled manpower for the state and the nation. All
these will complement Tinapa and make Tinapa work. On
its part, the state has done all it can to make Tinapa work
but the Federal Government should also do its part and that
is why the idea of AMCON coming in makes sense.

Fayose rides okada to Ekiti Assembly inauguration
JUNE 6, 2015 : BAYO AKINLOYE

The Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, on Friday rode on a motorcycle to inaugurate the state’s newly elected members of the state House of Assembly. Fayose was pictured on his Twitter handle, @ GovAyoFayose, seated on a bike popularly referred to as okada and casually dressed in a white-and-red T-shirt and white trousers. At the inauguration with his deputy, Dr. Olusola Eleka, the governor proclaimed the state’s 5th House of Assembly opened. Meanwhile, the governor said he had forgiven the 19 All Progressives Congress ex-lawmakers in the state who attempted to impeach him. Fayose, in a broadcast on Thursday, said that though it was a traumatic period, the Ekiti people stood by him and protected their mandate. According to a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, the governor noted that the period of the crisis could have been used for the development of the state, saying that with the victory against the attempted impeachment, he would now squarely face the business of governance. Fayose promised to embark on fulfilling his campaign promises despite the current financial situation, adding that the enhancement of the people’s welfare would continue to be his priority.

nobody is saying we depend on oil...This thread is aimed to debunk the notion that why we tag SS in our quest is because of oil...it's never because of oil but because of similar political, economic and cultural ideology and also to form a stronger force against potential enemy angry
Hope you know I am against the tagging of SS alongside a proposed Igbo country. If Igbos are serious our discussion should be about Igbo interest and we should not drag uninterested people along by force. It only makes us even worse than those we criticise.
