If the pix posted by the OP is evidence of being beaten black and blue then I would say 90% of the children who grew up during my time were beaten black and blue. What I see in the picture is a child who was assaulted but not beaten black and blue.....case closed!

Another shady case of journalism. I see no evidence the child was beaten black and blue. Did the grandma go overboard in disciplining the child? Yes but the same could be said of 90% of grandparents or parents in Nigeria when I was growing up. I still have a scar on my arm from stealing meat from a pot when I was 9 yrs old.

you don't comprehend easily is my first assumption otherwise you wouldn't mention his being head of state and petroleum minister as factors to credit him because if you could comprehend the term "merit" then you'll shut up and shove your gibberish back up your lipsrsealed if Jonathan's phd doesn't connote leadership and did you say heroic tendencies? even after conceding victory to buhari in the presidential elections? then i would like your definition of what does, since the last administration is still fresh in memory and we can compare it with the present situation of things vis-a-vis the economy, security e.t.c, then my opinion is with Jonathan and the PDP we were obviously in heaven we just didn't know, now with the real clueless buffonry of buhari and the APC we're now in hell and our eyes don open! of course you are welcome to disagree in which case i must ask you if you are related to Lai muhammed or infected with his virulent pathology? undecided
Don't make me laugh, we were in heaven during Jonathan's administration? What rock have you been living under? I guess you could call it heaven when corruption is not stealing, where billions of Naira are embezzled and EFCC is rendered powerless. I guess it is heaven when our foreign reserve is depleted to the point that we are having to borrow money from the international community. Oh wait there's more, Okonjo-Iweala predicted the dramatic reduction in global oil price and the need for Nigeria to save money for rainy days but tell me what did your PH.D president do? In the last 6 months of the presidency alone he spent a whooping sum of over 200 Billion Naira on election financing and bribery, I guess heavenly is the new word for extravagance grin grin grin . Now to your other rhetorical point, perhaps you need to learn the meaning of merit. Merit means deserving of or qualified, it could be educational or achieved by experience. I think being a head of state, petroleum minister and having several years of experience in governance gives Buhari merit. Unless your idea of merit is solely educational and you disregard his years of experience!

simple, in a sane merit driven society, buhari would never had reached officer cadre, captaincy much less become a general in the Nigerian army since his foundation is suspect (illiteracy) but thanks to the quota system, nepotism and tribalism, he rose to heights he had no right reaching, well that's enough diversion for now, concerning the topic, give specific instances (not vague generalisations) of sabotage let's know who the culprits are and how they relate to PDP, only then would you be making a case, not your numerous conjectures or should i say excuses you're wallowing in and unless you can concede that buhari is guilty for the state of our economy, the gynormous differential in naira/dollar exchange rate and the continuous onslaught of boko haram then it would be safe to say your conjectural saboteurs are responsible for these crisis too and as such you can't say it isn't related to the topic!
The real shame here is that you can't buttress your points without insults and degradation! The mere fact that Buhari has been head of state, petroleum minister and so on gives him more experience than the previous president. We can all see that a PH.D does not automatically denote leadership and heroic tendencies. It's a shame that the ethnic biasness in your argument makes you look more like the illiterate and I would suggest learning the art of argumentative analysis!

Bro I agree with you.

In the short term, there needs to be less reliance on oil

We have to get the fundamentals right. Inadequate electricity provision is a great problem. This is an area that continues to stifle economic growth and investment.

Interesting that you mention transportation. I went through Nigeria's commitment to reduce GHGs by 40% in the next 15 years which they submitted before the COP summit at Paris. The document suggests that they will create multi modal transport systems focusing on rail for both freight and passenger transport and also heavy investment in public transportation. All good on paper but as we all know, the problem is implementation.
Correct....Implementation & maintenance, the international community shouldn't even allow us to give speeches anymore based on so many empty promises.... grin grin grin

Topeakintola:
Ok I get you now.

I agree that diversification is crucial. However, diversification to what? Commodities? It will lead to the same problem in future if there is fall in price. With the world economy gradually embracing sustainability and reduction in fossil fuels, a focus in solid minerals will have consequences in the long term. You mentioned agric products, this is a good point but we still import some of our food commodities so an increase in domestic production will at best reduce imports and fill the domestic demand gap.

I will opine that Nigeria focuses on technology, manufacturing and gradually graduate to a smart economy. I was reading an article earlier, the author explained that if Mark Zuckerberg was Nigerian, his facebook project would have failed because of the export oriented syndrome of Nigerians. Nigerians are not patient and do not allow local businesses to improve the value of their products over time.

They may be Islamists and trouble makers but The Saudis are already thinking ahead. In the last 10 years, they have invested billions of dollars in IT and their Universities, especially STEM courses to increase their competitiveness. A lot of R&grin activities are going on in the country. I'm not too sure what the outcome will be but they are making an effort.

Nigeria is blessed with talents, locally and internationally. I dont see any reason why we cannot engage in innovation which incidentally might not require as much capital as investments in oil exploration or solid minerals.
Good points but all these things work hand in hand. Diversification is a starting point in order to reduce our over dependence on oil which ultimately contributes to our importation syndrome. Infrastructure comes next with the stabilization of electricity and a more reliable transportation system, this will attract local and international companies to invest more in talents capable of delivering the technologies of tomorrow. For what's the use of training our university students in the latest technology when electricity, hunger, poverty and so on limits their potential sad sad

On imports you mean?

I do understand your skepticism. Japan embarked on a series of devaluation of the Yen in other to make its exports cheaper, while that policy worked, it created another problem. It led to stagnation in the domestic economy and they have not recovered after so many years. Right now, the Japanese economy is bleeding heavily and its market suffering losses in value

On the other hand, in theory, devaluation can help to stimulate the export economy, my problem is how it is managed in Nigeria.
When I say restriction on exports I meant our dependence on oil. We need to restrict this and force diversification. Imports I'm not worried about because when compared to other countries Nigeria still ranks average on imports and our imports are mainly for things we could grow locally such as tomato paste, rice and so on. When we diversify and look into other natural resources our economy automatically becomes stronger like it was in the 1960s and 70s. For example, what ever happened to the export of palm oil, cocoa and tomatoes? Now that Oil is inching closer to $20 per barrel, it makes sense to look into alternatives before it is too late. Devaluation would only give us a false sense of hope and security, it would only prolong the inevitable doomsday!
Business › Re: Myths About Naira Devaluation - Nonso Obikili by abbey621(m): 7:58pm On Feb 16, 2016
Devaluation has and will always be a scam. Even in countries like China and South Africa it never works out as these countries are having to devalue their currencies over and over again, in the end sound economic policies and a restriction on exports while diversifying the economy is the way to go. If the price of Oil increased all the way to $60 or $80 per barrel nobody would be talking about devaluation, this is the biggest evidence that the whole thing is a scam!

At 25 in a normal and sane society, a man should no longer be living with his parents but when we talk about Nigeria, we are far from normalcy. At 25 most guys will be fortunate to be through with their undergraduate degree not to talk of having a job capable of sustaining oneself. Even here in the U.S, guys move out at 19 to 22 years of age only to return to their parents' house a couple of years later due to the harsh realities of the real world. The global economy is bad, even the wealthy families are making adjustments, a man should not live by the standards of the world but by his own unique situation. Life is not a sprint but a marathon, only the fittest survives!

I had the help of parents who worked from the bottom all the way up, I still wonder how my mother and father got up all those years to work from 6A.M to 5PM MONDAY to FRIDAY and sometimes on SATURDAYS. The greatest way to be financially independent is to spend less than you earn. This way you can have savings monthly, with those savings you can now pour it into quick but safe investments. Another way to become financially independent is to scan your environment, realize something that is lacking and come up with a plan to introduce the product or service that is lacking. With proper marketing and distribution, you will create another source of income completely different from your primary source of income. Try to get yourself a copy of Rich Dad, Poor Dad! Career › Re: Can Your Salary Ever Make You Wealthy? by abbey621(m): 7:33pm On Feb 15, 2016
There are two critical flaws with your analysis.

1. You assume most entrepreneurs make close to that a year when in fact more than 80% of all entrepreneurs in Nigeria make less than 4m Naira a year.

2. You assume that a person earning 500k Naira per month won't invest some of his or her salary. All it takes is an investment of 200k Naira per month into a profitable venture or investment with recurring profit added on by compound interest and you are left with a steady cash flow.

I always like to use myself as an example because I started from the very bottom. Nowadays I make over 1m Naira per month as salary, an additional 700k per month from my investments, this might sound like a lot but my expenses are about 1.2m Naira per month when I add all the bills, taking care of family and so on, if I decided to keep the remaining 500k Naira per month in a savings account, I wouldn't be sound financially but what I've done for the past 18 months is invest the remaining amount in a peer funding site which pays anywhere from 16 to 26% per investment period. The result is this, 5.4m invested and 1.1m in profits after tax. The lesson here is this, wealthy people are constantly investing, they don't see themselves as wealthy and are eager to pursue every opportunity!

What you've done clearly shows that you are still in love with the guy and all it takes is a few sweet words and he's got you wrapped around his arms again. Let me tell you something, see that village girl that he married, there's nothing you can do to break her, she's happy to take all the bullsh*t that you couldn't and that automatically makes her more ready for marriage than you. I've probably been to more churches than I can count and watch many on TV and I've never witnessed a pastor placing a curse on those celebrating Valentine's day which makes me think it's that particular church and that particular pastor with that said I believe most Nigerian Christians are not living a Christ-like life and even the pastor's sermon does not reflect Christ's teachings. Condemn is a strong word, the right word here is less informed. If you can't see beyond your horizon then more often than not you tend to believe what you see is the only reality. It's not about traveling alone but seeking enlightenment. I know people in Nigeria that are very knowledgeable because they chose to enlighten themselves by using the tools at their disposal such as internet and books and once they became enlightened they are no longer enslaved by their religion or pastor's point of view!

Unless you want to say God is not real.
We've seen cases where parents have led their children astray, that is why children must learn to separate facts from opinions. Parents, pastors and other societal leaders are meant for guidance not your sole source of enlightenment, it is only in Nigeria that a pastor would turn something meant to celebrate love into a curse, are you trying to say Nigerian pastors are wiser than other pastors around the world?

tunde4top:
Devaluation is the natural solution to our problem now. I expect the CBN to devalue the naira, place import ban on many frivolous goods we should manage to produce here, and tell the FG to urgently fix electricity. By doing the above things, we will naturally become an export dependent country in no time. Lack of devaluation is an advantage to the FG and banks in revenues, and a big disadvantage to the masses (common man) in revenues. The fg knows these things, and that is why they are refusing to do the right thing. Disadvantages of devaluation 1. The landing price of petro etc will rise and that will affect the 5naira gain the FG makes in per litre of fuel. If the landing price increases, the masses will political opponents will even force the FG to subsidize, and the FG dont want that because they just want to make money. 2. Banks will loose money. advantages of devaluation to common man .. The masses that do legitimate import business will now get dollar at a fixed price like 260-265 at parallel market instead of the current 330.
Aren't you forgetting something? Nigeria is already an export dependent country. If the price of oil was really high we wouldn't even be discussing devaluation or a forex crisis, this goes to show that devaluation is a farce which would not help the current state of our economy but actually make it worse. Remember the Naira was devalued in 2014 and this sparked the beginning of the collapse. Your theory would only work if three things happen simultaneously, investors are encouraged by stable electricity and security, the price of oil maintains its current level and the CBN reverses all of its forex policies made within the last 12 months. You and I know this is not going to happen angry angry
