Good morning house..

Can anyone give me an idea of how many bags of cement it would take to cast a 5 inch concrete deck 43 feet by 98 feet.

My engineer is quoting 250 bags and that is scary. I understand it would be not 100% accurate but I just want an idea.

Would appreciate all responses.
What's your expected concrete mixing ratio

dgitrader:
Reported Consumption naturally reduces as a result of ....
Halt of crossborder smuggling
Reduced buying power of Nigerians due to price hike
And finally...
Temporary End of subsidy claims/payments.
But government claimed cross border has been one of the main problem. I see 20% reduction in fuel consumption as insignificant, due to fact that , part of those who don't fuel their car are still part of this

PoliticsHow Come The Fuel Consumption Reduced Just By 20% by acorntree(op): 8:57am On Aug 19, 2023
what factors can explain the reduction in fuel consumption from 60 million to 48 million, despite most people reducing their fuel usage amidst the price hike? I see all claims by government as bullshit. Neighboring countries are benefiting from Nigeria smuggled fuel and still just 20% decrease despite many Nigerians now trekking up and down, car owners had parked their cars. I see an irresponsible government. Where are the non existent fuel subsidy cabals. In 2 years time , we shall see, where all the money saved from fuel subsidy will go to.

Good morning All

Please, how many blocks will one bag of cement set?

I am doing my fence now on an uncompleted building i just bought and the bricklayer is saying i need 34 bags of cement for 2430 blocks?

Is this too much?

34 bags is too small. You will need up to 70 bags. 35 blocks for 1 bag of cement

also, is there a method of calculating pay for bricklayers? he is charging me 150k for the entire fence - 2430 blocks.

I need advice please
You need 70 bags of cement. I bag of cement can produce 35, 9 inch blocks

HugeElephant:
Sincere Question, "how do prople get rich?".
I want to base the question on Nigeria alone.
How do Nigerians get rich ?

I look around and all i see is just salary earners, youth into poultry farming, fisheries,
POS stand, hairdressers, carpenters, Gambling and bet, modernized TAXI drivers making use of some apps, clothe sellers and many more?
Basically, many are not even living an average life. We are living below the average.

I have been wondering, how can i escape from this "below average life" or "average life"?
i look around me and watch the TV. On the media and in songs, you hear different adoration of some Nigerians who had achieved the wealth threshold. How did they do it? i am sorry if i sound crazy!

For some of these rich people, you wonder, how was the struggle?
How were they able to build their friendship base. How were they able to survive the government's myriad taxation.
may bodies under the state government will charge you, my bodies under the federal government will charge you too.
if taxation doesn't kill your business, you go dey pray make thieves no ruin your business.

i would have asked, How do people get rich around the world, but the world is too large and answers i might get may not be applicable to the society i currently live in.
big respect to everyone that has been able to achieve wealth...
by being rich have different level, is like the Dangote, Otedola , Mike Adenuga . Those one their wealthy are in Trillions of naira. Or you want be rich like some whose wealth are below billion of naira or those running in millions!

The size, quality , sophistication is the difference. Houses are not the same just like cars are not the same, someone using kabukabu will say he has a car whereas if you see expensive tear rubber car , you will surely see the difference. With substandard building material you can even build that house there with 2m, only that it won't last. Just use gutter sand to mold block. Use 1bag of cement with 10pan of sand and 2 pan gravel, house foundation have started.😁😁😁😁

PropertiesRe: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by acorntree(m):
temi4fash:
Please what can cause this kind crack in the building.
Answer
Cracking in building structures can be caused by various factors, including but not limited to these:

1. Settlement: Settlement occurs when the soil beneath a building compresses or shifts, causing the foundation to sink unevenly. This differential movement can result in cracks in walls, floors, and other structural elements.

2. Thermal expansion and contraction: Temperature fluctuations can cause building materials, such as concrete and masonry, to expand and contract. If there is insufficient allowance for this movement or if it occurs rapidly, it can lead to cracking.

3. Moisture-related issues: The presence of moisture can impact the stability of building materials. Excessive moisture, whether from leaks, water seepage, or high humidity, can weaken the structural integrity of materials and contribute to cracking.

4. Overloading or excessive loads: Applying loads beyond the design capacity of a structure can lead to stress concentrations and the formation of cracks. This can occur due to poor construction practices, incorrect usage of the building, or modifications made without proper engineering considerations.

5. Age and deterioration: Over time, buildings and their components may deteriorate due to environmental factors such as exposure to harsh weather conditions, chemical exposure, or lack of maintenance. This deterioration weakens the materials, making them more susceptible to cracking.

6. Shrinkage: Certain construction materials, such as concrete, have a natural tendency to shrink as they cure or dry out. If appropriate measures are not taken to control shrinkage, such as joint placement or use of shrinkage-compensating materials, it can lead to cracking.

7. Structural movement: Buildings are designed to accommodate certain movements, such as wind loads or seismic activity. However, if the structure experiences excessive movement beyond its design limits, it can result in cracks.

8. Poor construction practices: Inadequate construction techniques, including improper reinforcement placement, insufficient curing of concrete, or inadequate compaction of soil, can compromise the structural integrity of a building and contribute to cracking.

It is crucial to identify and address the underlying causes of cracking in buildings to prevent further damage and ensure the safety and longevity of the structure. Consulting a qualified structural engineer or building professional is recommended to accurately diagnose the cause of cracking and recommend appropriate remedial measures.

Also, to avoid problem like cracking do German floor next time and use beam all round the lintel level

Do You know the amount of women in the developed world that want children for personal selfish social benefits ( from.the government and from the father; Child support) because of the enabling Laws there

https://www.nairaland.com/7737436/actor-kevin-costners-estranged-wife

These are whites ooo not Africans. Having a child is now perceived by many women in the developed world as a scheme to collect a huge more than needed portion of a man's resources especially when the man is well to do

It is not for the child's welfare. The child is a means for them to get money and benefits from the government and the father.
If child support is reduced to basic minimum, all this getting pregnant for a man to access his assets while the child gets a tiny fraction would reduce. PregnancyPreneurs would reduce
Laws are known to be replete with loopholes. So, most of their woman capitalise on that . I supported your second point

It's not just feminism. The more educated or informed about something, the more You know about the cost of having and maintaining it like a car or a house or a child.
An accountant or a doctor or a music Star, If the 3 of them have a Million dollars given to them. Who is least likely to buy a Bentley or Benz or a mansion for personal use
Of course the accountant is least likely
to buy the car or house for personal use because he is aware that the car is a liability.
N The Music star might buy the car to attract his fans and promoters to bwlw perceived socially market value and social status . The doctor might maybe buy the car or house to show book smarts can drive Bentley too or live in a mansion . The accountant is more informed about the car or house being a financial Liability and can only buy them if they help to reduce tax payments ( another discussion on its own).
Please note all this are examples
In Developed countries, people have access to information and are well Informed that children are responsibilities and duties with school daily drop offs and pickups, child carers fees being expensive assignments, feeding,. medical care, cable subscription, school fees, rents , energy bills and medical bills and teen-agers and kids would also expect the parents to support them until they can stand on their own of which 21sr century capitalism does not assure each child being born of a well paid job or a prosperous career in the child's field.of study or training
That's a whole lot of responsibility as not everyone in developed countries have a lot of cash and so some people try to manage their expenses and costs including child care
Private secondary school in USA is 50 thousand dollars per year. How many citizens can afford it for their children.
So because people in developed countries are aware that more children equals more bills and responsibilities and less personal time
without the guarantee of more income. They tend to have less children as most people in developed countries are average income earners but not rich or wealthy
whether individuals are well informed or educated is not the real reason. In those advanced societies it is a crime not to be responsible. Here any useless man can impregnate a woman and still not responsible, even if married to the woman it is laws and implementation of laws that make those system to be working. There are many Nigerians who are totally irresponsible. Many Nigerians don't want to pay bill unless they are forced to do so.

Some Nigerians are lying to themselves when they think they are going to foreign countries with expertise. It is really not true. Let us not be too delusional or mentally setting up shop in an aloof territory.

Going to other African countries can translate to necessary brain drain, it can be argued to have skills transfer in benefit for that country.

But going to a current advanced country like USA, Canada, Australia, , many parts of Europe, Japan, china, Malay, even dubai or Kuwait, it is chances that you will be going to absorb knowledge at first, for the first few years, and not really give it, especially in the technical fields, medical field, educational field (some of it are subjective -- going to teach local language is not really brain drain), and stuffs like that.

Skills like plumbing, electrical, mechanic, nursing, etc are not really that immediately transferable because you have to pass a test and/or multiple test that might take years to certify, depending on how far you want to grow. They are not letting a plumber go and burst a house just because he/she was one in their home country; things are different. Even a European does not have a seamless transition of skills in these kinds of fields.

The willingness to work is what is enticing Nigerians to them, and their willingness to pay is what is enticing them to Nigerians. Their people work the kinds of jobs they seek from Nigeria, but their people might not be more diligent than a Nigerian that don't want to loose the opportunity to grow financially and mentally. Even a Nigerian 1st generation descent, mostly don't have that level of work drive.

jobs like banking are not really transferable, but it's close, to terminology, with instincts.

An oil worker in Nigeria depends on experience, for it to be transferrable over there. Even though the terminology are similar. You still need intense training and yearly or every two year knowledge updated training.

Marketing, commerce, and trading jobs, might be transferrable, but it can be a remote long term or short term job, that is why stock people, small item marketers, govt bond investors, etc even yahoo, are mostly marketing, could be real or fake marketing.

Is more that could be said on this subject, but I think overall, many Nigerian jobs are not transferable, is just that the limited skilled people with potential are picked up, but most times, their Nigerian knowledge was mediocre to begin with, before japa. The striving spirit is what we mostly have. The education system is flawed on many level, we think of how we can eat more often, how to transport ourselves or properties, security, scamming, and then people interaction. Most countries are past that, but still have problems, because their younger ones, don't really want to work hard, so they use our eagerness to work and learn, to keep their workforce moving.
Fellow, I disagree with your submission. Many skills are transferable only that standards set by regulating bodies of different professions are different. A good bricklayer in Nigeria will equally be able to cope and work perfectly in any other countries if only he is ready to learn and relearn proper working techniques adopted by the new abode. Though, environment maybe different, standard are different, building codes, wiring codes etc can easily be learnt once the person is intelligent and have a minimum educational qualification like, school leaving certificate if obtained genuinely. Major problem Nigerians has is not working under strict ethical environment. Nigeria is a place where anything goes, no proper certifications for many trades. Anyone can claim to be anything. A good mechanic, artisan, plumber, and any skilled personnel will equal be able to work and adapt with new system if it is retrain and certified. Though Nigerians see themselves as mediocre but outside Nigeria, Nigerians adapt and keep improving themselves in many fields. Even our so called lecturers do perform when working outside the countries. Churning out qualities papers, which are rated high in their field. it is the country that is killing everyone, so don't assume that Nigerians dont change when outside.

FamilyRe: My Personal Observation About Nigerian "Adults" by acorntree(m): 4:57pm On May 27, 2023
CuriousCart:
I have noticed that most Nigerians are adults by age only and not thought. 80% of adults lack a clue about their next move and direction.

They usually copy what other successful people around them are doing on the surface.

If a colleague buys a car, they start getting worked up until they also buy a car. If a neighbour opens a shop for his wife they rush to open a shop too. If their friend is into tech, they abandon their budding career and start taking tech courses upandan.

I think the copiers do this because they believe mimicking will make them reach the same goals as the person but they fail to realize that life doesn't work that way because there are many unseen events and efforts that may have led to the copyee's success.

The colleague who bought a car may have been gifted by a sugar daddy or recently lost a parent and inherited the car while you are planning to use your entire savings plus loan.
The neighbour opening a shop may have had 15 years experience in that biz line while you just want to dive into it blindly.
The tech guy may just have the brains for it while you are more likely to succeed at sales.

Finally, when they are done copying and don't achieve the same successful result as the copyee, the next thing is to accuse him/her of using juju and using people's destiny to succeed.

Just do you.
Op, you made a valid point but it's not people fault because no enabling environment to try new things. We copied everything from classwork to final year project thesis, and copying is not only done at lower level of education, even at higher level. The country economy situation is not helping any ambitious individual. I believe copies of Dangote refinery will soon be and everyone will benefit from it. Copying is a cultural thing in Nigeria, if you don't copy you may be left behind, so copy anything copable. There was a time a student was copying in an exam but mistakenly copy the other person names. grin
