BusinessRe: Ideas Or Capital: Which Is More Important? by Afam(m): 1:40pm On Oct 13, 2006
@Walelead,

Thanks. Do not really have a choice now than to develop this.

@Seun,

You are begiining to sound like an Abuja politician, which one is Since they are both absolutely necessary, one can't honestly say that one is more important than the other.?

I will take it that you now believe that money is not more important and at the same time you don't want to agree that ideas are more important. Take a stand, there is no middle ground. The topic didn't ask for a 3rd option, just 2.
BusinessRe: Ideas Or Capital: Which Is More Important? by Afam(m): 1:45pm On Oct 12, 2006
@My2cents,

Let me share this as you already know the plan.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

As the world is going digital with more and more time spent on pcs than on tvs for business and entertainment, it seems that the future belongs to the web application that people like.

As youtube earned $1.6B from google in less than 1 year it seems that all one needs is a good idea and proper marketing.

I took a good look at youtube and was able to replicate (code a similar program) the site in less than 72 hrs.

Now, it is not the coding that is the problem, it is the ability to make the application useful and used by the intended users.

Here is what I intend to do and any comments (constructive and/or destructive) are welcome.

A web application with a single sign on that will enable Nigerians use either for business or for pleasure.

This application will cover

events - users can add event announcements, edit or delete same, will be searchable

schools - users can add their schools, search for friends on the schools section

blogs - users can set up personal blogs and share their diaries with whoever cares to read

jobs - users can post cvs, search for jobs, employers can add job openings

forum - a categoried forum covering so many topics

album - users can create albums and share pictures online

video - users can post videos (size will be limited) afterall a lot of people now use video enabled handsets without really sharing the videos they take

classifieds - a simple business classifieds section

directory - business directory, fully categorised

online payment solution - to tidy up the issue of online business, the programming time needed to do (just like paypal) is really not too difficult when compared to some of the tasks above.

Remember, all that one needs is a single login to add, edit, delete or conduct searches for people while visitors can view pictures, videos, forum, events etc.

Any comments on this plan? The programming side isn't a problem, the marketing and usefulness is.

Are there tasks that Nigerians would readily want to accomplish online effortlessly?

Funding will be sourced internally while revenue will depend heavily on adverts (afterall companies will advertise anywhere that prospective customers are).

Cost implications will include hardware (servers, lots of disk space), reliable internet connection, backup and marketing/advertisi ng,

I am not really interested in replicating any model as something unique yet simple and easy to use will sell well over just copying a model somewhere.

It is not difficult to figure out why Microsoft is making so much money, write software once and use over and over again while smiling to the bank.

NB: Still on the issue of stealing ideas, I believe that without the necessary skills any stolen idea is a complete waste of time. This why I can broadcast the idea, only those with the necessary skills to put these things together in a cost effective manner can really benefit from the idea.

PoliticsRe: EFCC & The Proposed Church Probing! by Afam(m): 12:07pm On Oct 12, 2006
I think money laundering is wrong and an offence so it's ok for the EFCC to check that out.

If we leave church matters to God then pastors can as well kill people and expect us to wait for God to handle them.

The issue here is money laundering not the mode of preaching.
PoliticsRe: Is Babangida Innocent Of All Allegations? by Afam(m): 3:21pm On Oct 10, 2006
Hmmm, BibB1 seems to know a lot about IBB and sometimes gets emotional when making a case for IBB or making a case against OBJ.

Add the professional angle about respect for Vatsa and others and the statement that IBB has asked for forgiveness from God maintaining that that was all that mattered, it won't be hard to find a direct link between the screen name and the Minna general himself.

Interesting posts sha.

How can you expect detailed cost estimate when you have failed to give a detailed requirement.

A website could be as cheap as free or as expensive as what google is doing. Where do you belong?

Without a clear list of requirements, you are bound to have problems with anyone that elects to design the sites for you because you will either under pay or over pay the person

Alexis has given you a perfect answer, so go to town with detailed information on what you want done first, otherwise you may end up running into problems.
PoliticsRe: Efcc Vs Enugu State - Who Is Justified? by Afam(m): 9:34am On Oct 10, 2006
Dan,

Thanks for your post.

Have you forgotten that most Nigerians prefer to sensationalize issues than tackle them as they should.

A country where gossips, rumours, dangerous conjectures and misinformation are common will hardly make any progress.

If only we can learn to remove sentiments from serious discussions.

As we complain about the leadership in Nigeria, what examples are we showing here when we discard anything someone has done because he failed to do another in another setting?

We are our own worst enemies.
PoliticsRe: Efcc Vs Enugu State - Who Is Justified? by Afam(m): 6:50pm On Oct 09, 2006
One of the major reasons why we keep having problems in Nigeria is that we always find a way to either completely condemn or commend a person regardless of the specific actions of the person involved.

That the governor illegally uses LG funds to run projects and that he has serious questions to answer as regards allegations of political intimidation and even killing (according to some quarters) do not take away the fact that he indeed embarked on a lot of projects that have direct impact in the lives of people of the state.

These projects need not be read on pages of newspapers or the internet, anyone that has been to Enugu state of will attest to this fact because you see them with your eyes even though the roads were getting bad the last time I visited Enugu.

We shall be honest enough to condemn or commend people based on their actions.

This idea of trying to water down or outrightly deny any achievements (no matter how small) of anyone is counter productive and infact only people with questionable characters or people that have things to hide will engage in such, real shame.
Tech JobsRe: Hysys (process Simulation) In Nigeria by Afam(m): 3:21pm On Oct 09, 2006
The industry where you use this isn't like the IT industry where a lot of players are readily available to train/teach for a fee.

I did use HYSYS for some time but that was in the Oil and gas and they even had to keep a tight control on the number of users, licencing issues I guess.

Not sure you will find companies that know about HYSYS let alone teach others unless they are involved in the oil and gas and if that is the case the oil money they make won't give them time to consider training.
PoliticsRe: Efcc Vs Enugu State - Who Is Justified? by Afam(m): 12:42pm On Oct 09, 2006
It's called politics.

The governor has questions to answer as regards political opponents but when it comes to developmental projects he has done extremely very well.

Even his ardent haters find it difficult to question if he did anything tangible or not, hence complaints like "he is building everything in his LGA".

EFCC should investigate everyone, including every state because no matter the good things we see, the players are still corrupt.
ProgrammingRe: Basics Of PHP Programming? by Afam(m): 10:56am On Oct 09, 2006
I did state earlier that this is not about defending any programming language, it is about providing answers to questions asked by someone that needed someone to teach him PHP, not C language.

I use PHP a lot, raw coding, real projects and yet I never learnt a line of C language. What this means it that one does not need to learn C language to be able to understand PHP. The fact that C language is believed to be more difficult when compared to PHP makes the issue pretty straightforward.

Your advice/time may be paid for but that applies to people that seek them. Someone wanted to learn PHP and you are advicing the person to learn C language first, this is flat wrong and no justifications can change that.

Open source has shown that things could be better when everyone is given the opportunity to use software or service for free.

WebmastersWhat Do We Really Want In An Online Payment Solution? by Afam(op): 2:42pm On Oct 07, 2006
Hello,

Can Nigerians list what they expect to see or use in an online payment solution where businesses in Nigeria will be the primary target?

I am asking this question because often times we are bombarded with advertising for one online payment solution or another but in terms of performance or affordability problems sometimes or most times (depends on who is evaluating) come up.

Could it be as simple as being able to fund an account, use same account to pay for good/services from mr A's website, have a completely transparent transaction details?

Are there specific features or functionailities that Nigerians really need to be able to transact business online cost effectively?

Just Web Services will develop from scratch an online payment gateway for use in Nigeria in the interim and proceed to develop an online market place similar in concept to ebay so that the average Nigerian can indeed sell his/her products or services on the web without necessarily owning a website.

Comments are welcome.

ProgrammingRe: Basics Of PHP Programming? by Afam(m): 10:23am On Oct 02, 2006
qleyo:
Right and far from misleading. PHP and C syntax are exactly the same (arrays, conditional statements, data types, standard IO functions) rules might be different (PHP is weaker and less strict, e.g you don't have to declare variables before using them) but if you know C you can pick up PHP in less than a week (provided you know all the other bits). Infact every line of PHP translates to lines of C its based on C and Perl.
If the rules are different then PHP and C cannot be the same.

About not declaring variables before using them, what version of PHP are you refering to? Such open ended statements do not make sense. Why would you rather prefer that one learnt a different programming language before learning what he/she really wants? It does not make sense.

qleyo:
Dude I've covered everything PHP has to offer, really, from sockets and network programming to image manipulation and graphics. I work as an interactive developer. My final BEng project (a GPS tracking system) was programmed in C and PHP. Syntax is exactly the same apart from the dollar signs and other bits and bobs. But if you learn the harder stricter one (C) then PHP is a piss of piss (I don't advise anyone to learn a scripting language first). I was a C fanatic before I picked up PHP it took me less than a week.
If you have covered everything PHP has to offer then you cannot make the statement that PHP is just a copy of C.
Again, it is a complete waste of time to ask someone to learn C before learning PHP, it is not about which language is hardest to learn, it is about the learner going the best route that makes the most sense - learning PHP.

qleyo:
But as always no programming discussion/argument ever ends with either party agreeing with the other - ever. So lets not brew anything shall we. I still say if you learn C or any other C like language (preferably procedural) everything else will be down hill.
This is not about programming language arguement, it is about advicing someone properly as regards learning a programming language.

Read the title of this thread again and you will notice that the poster obviously wants to learn PHP, infact some basics, so why direct him/her to a more difficult language other than PHP?

@Topic,

PHP is fun and easy to learn, throw in a huge followership, good online tutorials and large database of common scripts and you are good to go.

@Omofineboy,

What exactly do you disagree with me on?

I have not stated or even implied that OBJ should remove him so whether OBJ has the powers to do so is not my concern.

Considering the level of mistrust between the 2, it is my opinion that the VP resigns which is his own right. If the 2 cannot have a smooth relationship then one of them should leave the scene and I doubt if the president will leave the scene for the deputy.

We have seen similar scenarios in some states and the states are usually better off with one of the 2 leaving office and the 2nd in command usually leaves not the other way round.

PHP, a copy of C? Wrong and misleading.
PoliticsRe: Phantom Coup Alert By Atiku! by Afam(m): 11:02am On Sep 30, 2006
The VP should resign his post because it does not make sense to the the No 2 man in a setup that he constantly disagrees with.

Even though the presidency is doing all it can to get rid of him politcally (my personal opinion), it smacks of absolute greed and lust for power for the VP to continue to retain his position and still "fight" the institution that does not want him any longer.

While many do not approve of the tactics of the presidency, this do or die attitude of the VP will certainly make some people support the call for his removal.

Maybe when it is time to right the wrongs of these men, he will explain how he tried to sell Nigeria to his companies and that of his friends via the Privatization program.

Jacob Zulu of SA faced the same problem last year, was relieved of his position in a bid to destroy him politically, today he is free from all allegations as the supreme court dismissed the charges and acquitted him.

Desparation is dangerous and it seems the VP is ready to do anything to cling to power and "anything" may be at the detriment of Nigerians.

I only hope that one day all the public offices in Nigeria will be made unattractive to that only those that are willing and ready to serve will venture into the offices not what we have today where governance seems to be the business with the highest return on investments in Nigeria.

Last word from you? You are not a consistent person for me to take that serious.

Take your time to develop the logical part of your brain so you could discuss with people.

Now, I have gone personal with TayoD and no regrests about it because of the way he attempts to twist everything and divert attention from the issues at hand.

As for you or any other person , in terms of going personal I have only replied in kind and your lying mind will hardly agree that you started the insults. I advocate for peace but when people like you throw insults at others simply because you do not agree to contrary opinions it makes perfect sense to you a dose of your own medicine and that is what I have given to you and I am happy it has humbled you to the extent that the only time I get to read your posts now is when you are responding to one personal post or another.

I challenge to go and bare your mind on a lot of pressing issues on this forum.

Be careful when dealing with people that promote peace because they could as well wage war if necessary.

I am not bothered about your swine being the plural of pigs, it was necessary to point that out because it was contained in a particular post where you were educating me about english language and you went ahead to ask me to learn "grammer" even when grammar was the write word.

I don't mind arrogant and intelligent people but arrogance and unintelligence? Never.

Suddenly, Nigerians want an independent and saintlike EFCC that is flawless when they have endured brazen looting of public treasury without anyone challenging the looters all their lives in Nigeria.

Anybody looking for the most difficult people to satisfy in the world? Come down to Nigeria!

Even if OBJ goes to jail tomorrow his place in the history of the country cannot be debated even if it is just for the courage to fight corruption.

It is on record that others chose to do otherwise.

Maybe those that are affected by the current fight that is making it difficult for fraudulent people to make quick more are the most disturbed.

Even in the developed world, you do not have flawless and impartial law enforcement agencies but here we are looking for one just because someone took the bold step to challenge corruption even if he is corrupt himself.

Someone must start it and that is what OBJ has done. Do we have any clean person in the corridors of power today?

If yes, name the person.

If no, then why should we be sad that someone has decided to begin a fight that will mean well for Nigeria on the long run?

As they say, the enemies of this great country lie within.

WebmastersRe: Please Advise Me On A Web Hosting Company by Afam(m): 3:37pm On Sep 29, 2006
Lawo,

Often times, experience is the best teacher as there is usually a disconnect between what providers promise and what they deliver. Unfortunately, it is only when money must have changed hands that you will realize this.

Ask providers to show you websites they have hosted and if possible try to contact the real owners of the site and ask them if they have problems with the hosting.

Trust customer reviews on providers website at your own risk.

The cost again may have nothing to do with the reliability as one provider may charge very high and deliver very little whereas another will charge very low and deliver much.

Put differently, there is no clear cut answer that will solve your wahala right now.

A client in UK just found out this morning that his host in the UK was playing games with him, claiming to provide services that never existed on the hosting platform until I finished a web project that required just PHP and mysql to run and the host started speaking in tongues as there was no way for them to get out of this one. The files have been on the server for over one week but make the site show now, na wahala. Needless to say it was end of discussion between my client and the web hosting company in the UK.

Good luck.

Nigeria needs a completely deaf president.

Nothing pleases us.

Maybe until OBJ takes a stroll from Aso Rock to Kirikiri, Nigerians won't be happy.

I am in full support of the EFCC even though its fight is selective. Selective fight against corruption is 100% better than no fight at all.

If we have been seeing this type of selective fight against corruption for the past 20 years, Nigeria would have been a whole lot better.

For those that never see anything good about the EFCC, may we know what you want the government to do now? Scrap EFCC or let them be?

Maybe answers to such a question will help us know where these guys are coming from.

I find it hard to believe that a Nigerian that knows what corruption has done to the very fabric of this country will be rubbishing the EFCC's fight against corruption even if selective.

Corruption kills more people than any known weapons because while the number of deaths can be counted even in a war situation, the voiceless victims of corruption die in millions and nobody is counting.

The able bodied and intelligent young men selling sweets or pure water on the road may have been doing something better.

That child that rushes to clean the big man's wind shield for N10.00 when he or she should have been in school is a victim of the atrocities of these men being exposed by EFCC.

That our roads are not working, power supply epilieptic, health system near decay are as a direct consequence of corruption.

We need completely deaf leaders because Nigerians are highly inconsistent, insatiable and difficult.

@Davidylan,

See you when you learn enough to make meaningful contributions on issues.

You do not have the powers nor the right to ask me not to reply any posts you make because that will amount to giving room for an uninformed person to post all sorts of rubbish on a public forum like Nairaland.

@TayoD,

Empty barrels they say make the most noise. The best in economics in your secondary school, 2.1 in the university, so what?

Do not even mention the schools because that will be negative publicity as you have not displayed any native or even acquired intelligence in your discussions here.

You make wrong statements and when they are pointed out, rather than acknowledge them, correct them and move on you spend all your time trying to wriggle out of the corner you boxed yourself into.

As pointed out by someone, you are simply not communicating. If people tend to misunderstand you almost all the time then you should know that it means there is something very wrong with your style of communication (same reason why I asked Davidylan to use simple and understandable words when posting).

Ineffective communication is a huge problem and you better work on it.

As regards reducing your level of communication to that of your 5yr old, honestly I praise that child for understanding you at all unless you are the one coming down to the child's level to be able to make sense.

Others make their points, you understand them, agree or disagree with them based on very clear statements from them.

But when you post a line, you will take 4 or 5 posts to clarify what you meant on a post that ought to have been simple and clear enough in the first place.

And again, never bother to boast about your achievements because there are people on this forum that have achievements you may never be able to come close to in your lifetime.

Enjoy!

Esut has always been using infrastructure owned by IMT. Esut has never had a permanent site or infrastructure of its own.

Esut had the permanent site moved to its present location in Nkanu.

There is a private university that is said to be in the offing by the governor.

If all his crimes are limited to citing projects in his LG then the governor has no case to answer.

This is democracy, let another person win and develop his area if that is what things have boiled down to.

There is no place that will not complain about marginalization because all the projects can never go round all the LGs even if one wanted to do so.

The law school is in Agbani but again the law school is a federal project, not a state one and there is a huge difference between the 2.

Buchy & Saintchux,

No one is defending the governor, maybe you guys don't like it when people say things the way they really are.

On corruption, no doubt the governor is corrupt even for not allowing the LG funds to reach the intended LGs or awarding contracts to his own companies.

I am sure the world will be a better place to live in when proper and correct information is made available to everyone.

When we have skewed or biased information only the sender gains because the sender will want the receiver to see only a particular side to the story which is wrong. Same problem with the government at all levels telling us what they want us to know and not what we should know.

Someone started this thread by talking about dubious achievements. Are his achievements dubious?

Another stated that Aso Rock saved him from EFCC even when Aso Rock wanted to deal with him based on opposing a major project of Aso Rock.

Valid concerns like "why is he citing a lot of projects in is LG" and the forfeiture of his shares in those companies he owns and uses to execute jobs will help everyone in moving forward or in addressing issues that affect the people of Enugu state, not wrong information or sometimes flat wrong ones like "the governor is causing the instability in Anambra state because Chris Uba lives in Enugu".

We must try to discuss real issues and not focus too much on rumours or gossips.
