This, I believe, globacom does not understand: the kind of people who have all these skills (that they are looking for) won't use them for someone else.
Exactly. Anyone that understands so much will rather work as a consultant or on specific time based projects and certainly not as an employee of a company because the person may make several times what the employer is willing to pay working on his/her own.

WebmastersRe: Beware Of Foreign Hosting by Afam(m): 9:17am On Oct 03, 2009
Seems your last post was flagged as spam.

Based on the above information found at Just Web Services it will cost me N90000 to host a film company's site with tens of movies available on PPV to my audience. In five years I'd have to look for another hosting plan as my uploaded movies would have exceeded the 20GB Quota! That would be another 90000. In effect I'd be paying N180000 to host a single website.

Compare this service to Inmotion which allows me to have Unlimited Space, bandwidth, 2500 emails, etc, all at $108 (Less than N20000!) and I am yet to experience some form of downtime on my sites.

You want me to be specific? Here is being specific. I said in an earlier post that I did not want to review any host or post any negative comment about someone's business but since you asked me to be specific, then I will start with you. And why is it that you do not offer phone support to your Starter and Medium clients. Honestly, how much extra would it cost you to offer phone support to them? Its not as if you have to call them everyday to chat about the weather.
The best way to address the point you just raised is to take a look at the same website you claim is one of the best 10 in the world.

The cheapest hosting plan on that website does not have support for

streaming audio, streaming video, mysql database, flash, shockwave and the funniest of all is that you must pay for 2 good years for you to signup for this plan.

Based on this it does not make any sense to educate you on things you don't understand concerning web hosting.

Why don't you start uploading unlimited movies to the account you signed up for and see how it goes?

Hosting companies take advantage of the gullibility of customers like you to make offers that are too sweet to refuse.

If you even do a search on google on web hosting I am sure you will come across my article which is even being used by some web hosting companies in the US and UK on their websites to educate customers on the facts about web hosting.

So, for the simple fact that your host which you claim is one of the best does not support video or audio and requires that you pay in advance for 2 years goes to show that you are still far from reality as regards what works and what doesn't work.

To conclude, I can offer unlimited everything on all the features even when the actual setting will place limits on every single feature. All web hosting management tools I have come across come with such flexibility to set a displayed quota and an actual quota.

Inmotion Hosting. Check all available hosting reviews. They are even partners of CPanel Inc. See, as a web developer I make proper research before before selecting a host. And forgive me for saying this, I cannot trust any host who gives me 500MB of monthly bandwith for a high price. I'm currently working on a website that will have a pay per view TV. What do you think would happen if I were to pay a host in Nigeria here for the site?

I'd have to pay up to 20000 NAIRA a month to get adequate bandwidth!!

And still that would not be enough. Imagine what would happen when hundreds of visitors watch movies of about 300MB each!

My brother and my sister, I'm not saying Naija hosts are not good. I'm saying for the kind of money they charge, they have to provide better services.
I respond to issues when you generalize. Who is talking about giving you 500MB as bandwidth? The cheapest hosting plan I offer comes with 5GB monthly bandwidth because I understand the business of web hosting very well.

Make no mistake about it this is not about proving whether my services are better but to demonstrate that your generalization does not hold water as your comments are wrong.

You must learn to be specific when you make statements about issues.

Inmotion Hosting? Thanks for the information. Sleep dey catch me now, later on this.

To change the mindset of the poster, there are numerous web hosting scammers out there whether Nigerian or Foreign based. After the scammers, then comes the web hosts that put you on a paralysed server, so you get downtimes always. After that, you have hosts that will never give you customer support anytime there is a problem.

It is the responsibility of the person who needs the web hosting account to carry out proper research before making a purchase.

We created our own company after sampling Nigerian hosting companies and discovering that customer support is generally poor.

Olawunmi,
Hostmot Sales Rep. (www.hostmot.com)
After reading this post I checked the website of the poster and saw that her comment does not marry what the company does at their own end.

With 50MB disk space and 500MB monthly bandwidth what is the maximum email account quota one could have out of the 3 accounts allowed?

If I can give you 50MB on a simple 80GB hard disk then I can carter for at least 1600 websites on a single server with their respective visitors accessing the same processor.

Compare this to a web host that provides a minimum of 500M for the cheapest hosting plan on the same hard disk and judge for yourself the reliability of the web hosting.

The bottom line is that we don't have to make unsubstantiated statements just to sell our services as we may end up exposing ourselves unnecessarily.

But those who accuse us of making undemonstrated assertions, researchwise and even call us charlatans based on what they have read here and there, are not fair to us, or to themslves. WE SAY WE DID 18 YEARS OF RESEARCH AND HAVE PUBLISHED TWO BOOKS OF OVER 500 PAGES EACH on this same topic. Our recent book which came out this year 2009, has already won two international awards in USA, and C-Span gave us 30 minutes free broadcast. If we were talkng nonsense none of that would have happened. So those interested in whether or not we proved our points should read the book. It is meaningless to make any serious judgement of our work or to accuse us of charlatanism without reading the book.
I have not read the book but I have a few questions.

1. Are you saying that man evolved from other animals as against being created by God?

2. Can you say for sure that the equipment, technique or formula used in determining the time some of the things you found out took place is reliable to make such categorical statement concerning the human race?

3. Considering the fact that your new book used Igbo land as case study would it then fair to state that if you had used Yoruba land as case study that you would have come to the conclusion that the first man was a Yoruba man or that Adam and Eve were Yoruba people?

Can some of you that obviously agree with the research provide answers to my questions above if she is too busy to answer them?

Personally, I think it is an insult for the researcher to expect everyone to believe what she has come out with without questions or scrutiny.

Its very clear now that you have nothing to offer. You can't defend OBJ ,Egwu, and Ribadu while you nail Ibori and Others. Am nothing defending anybody rather am saying all of them are criminals which is very very clear to every right thinking Nigerian.

Why we will remain stagnant is cuz of the action of few who defends/celebrate those criminals that give them some change. Call a spade a spade and we will get rid of all of them. If we keep on singing praises to those that are dragging backward we won't make any head way.

Ibori, Obj, Egwu, Udenwa, Bode, Ribadu, Elrufai, Ibb, and many others are in the same category(Looters) take it or not. Am done with this.
And now you have turned the issue to Afam defending OBJ, Egwu and Ribadu?

Don't you have any shame?

Anytime your ignorance is exposed you jump into another matter entirely.

I have stated facts concerning the power issue which obviously you knew very little about as you effortlessly swallowed every nonsense you read online.

If asked to comment on OBJ trust me I will have a lot to put down from good things he did to bad things he did while in office. I will not manufacture a lie to prove that OBJ did anything bad. That is where I have issues with Nigerians who do not mind twisting and lying about things just to blame someone.

You can continue to embarrass yourself by jumping from one issue to another but one thing I will tell you is this - I try to find out facts from all the information and misinformation going around instead of believing everything coming out of the media.

Think. Think. Use your head. Don't allow politicians or media houses to think for you.

PoliticsRe: What Will Happen If IBB Is Arrested? by Afam(m): 1:40pm On Sep 30, 2009
maxsiollun:
Epiphany - thanks for the great lateral thinking. You have analysed a lot of the issues I had in mind and foreseen some of the obstacles to arresting IBB. Any attempt to prosecute him would open a giant can of worms that would consume much of the ruling class in Nigeria who did shady deals with him.

1) There is a detailed, comprehensive and damning written indictment of corruption and financial mismanagement in the IBB regime which has been in public and govt circulation for over a decade. Yet no one has dared use this incriminating evidence called the "Oputa Report" to prosecute him - even though others with less clear cut cases have been prosecuted for corruption by the govt.

2) When Abacha died in 1999, who was the first person summoned to Aso Rock? The Chief of Defence staff? No. The A-G? No. The Chief of Army Staff? No. IBB was the first person summoned and it was he who gave instructions on what should happen next. He teleguided the transition programme of Abubabakar and bankrolled OBJ into power. To understand how instrumental IBB was and how much he pulled the strings, after Abacha died in 1998 IBB publicly said that the next civilian president would have to be someone who had:

"an excellent understanding of our political history……he would have to have an understanding of the military – so we could do business with him”

Does that sound like someone we know?,

3) IBB is stupendously wealthy. He may be the richest Nigerian alive. In Nigeria we know that money talks.

4) He has the entire army and security establishment in his pocket and they are all his "boys". Remember those army officers once tagged "IBB Boys"?  Most of them are now in the inner recesses of govt/political office:

*The Senate President David Mark (you know - the guy who is third in line to the presidency) is one of IBB's closest confidants. During the June 12 crisis, insiders have testified that IBB saw him as his chosen successor.

*Brigadiers Tunde Ogbeha, Raji Rasaki, Tanko Ayuba and John Shagaya are Senators.

*Throughout IBB's tenure, only 5 officers survived his purges throught his regime. One of them is Admiral Murtala Nyako. He is now the Gov of Adamawa State and his wife is a senior judge.

*Colonel Oyinlola was one his Mil Govs. He is now the Gov of Osun State.

*The current boss of the Nigerian armed forces used to be IBB's pilot.

*The current and prior National Security Adviser are his "boys".

I could go on forever with such examples. Do you think these people were positioned in such high offices coincidentally?  Do you think that people who owe their wealth, power, status, position and influence entirely to IBB's patronage will sit by and let him be disgraced w/o an almighty fight?
Did you ask this question with the hope to get answers from people or did you do so just to tell us what you think about IBB?

If you even take time to understand your question you will see the need to accommodate views and opinions you do not expressly agree with?

In my opinion, nothing will happen. While he will be in jail some of the people you mentioned may even be kicked out of their positions or offices by the president and as you acknowledged in your response money talks and it will be strange for you to claim that IBB is probably the richest Nigerian alive.

Based on what?

We are tired of assumptions, conjectures and theories. Let us for once leave sensationalism at the door step and base our debates on facts, verifiable facts, logic and common sense.

Unless of course you have access to information none of us here can boast of. If you are talking as an insider I will perhaps see reason with your position.

But as to the question proper - NOTHING.

All it takes to make a powerful person leave or vacate an office is a presidential order. From EFCC to IGP to CBN to even the 5 bank CEOs it is the same process. Some powerful governors cannot even freely visit their states today because the incumbent governors are having problems with them.
WebmastersRe: Beware Of Foreign Hosting by Afam(m): 12:01pm On Sep 30, 2009
ugojamali:
The very problem with Nigerian hosts is that they offer minimal services for large amounts of money. For example, a typical Nigerian host offers you 1 domain registration, 5 email accounts (some don't even offer that), host only 1 domain in one account, 10 subdomains, very limited bandwidth and 1GB space for an exorbitant price of =N=3000 per month. But a foreign host (for example Inmotion which hosts my websites) offers me 2 domain registrations, 2500 email accounts, host 2 domains in one account, Unlimited subdomains, Unlimited space, and unlimited bandwidth at the awesome price of $8 (=N=1200). Which one do you think is better?

Now imagine that I decided to pay a Nigerian registrar for a new domain registration two months ago. First I filled out the online form. Next I had to go to a bank to pay the fee because they could not accept credit or interswitch cards! Next I was told to scan and email the teller. After that I waited a whole day and my domain was still not registered!! i called and called and emailed and then threatened before I got their attention. They registered my domain 3 days after I paid them!!! They never even called me.

But when I hosted my first domain with Inmotion, I simply filled out the form and put in my credit card information. Inmotion called me about 7 to 10 minutes after I submitted my form to verify! My domain was registered within 30 minutes of my payment. Now guys, which one should I trust more? Our dear Naija or the foreigners?

But before anyone decides to go with the foreigners check out the reviews, go with the good companies, ignore the $1 hosts (they're criminals), and extensively read what services they offer.
Interesting.

The cheapest hosting plan I have is N15,000.00 per year for personal websites and up to N90,000.00 per year for corporate websites and people still pay. Most of them are people that are moving from other hosting arrangements. Some have been paying for hosting for over 5 years now with email accounts for over 200 people in some cases.

When it comes to companies depending on the web trust me they will look for reliability and not all the marketing and advertising stuff you see every where.

Domain name registration takes less than a full minute to register so your assumption or conclusion on Nigerians providing such services is just plain wrong. Try to be specific and stop generalizing.

which law makers? Do we have law makers? Dude stop fooling yourself pls.
Just like you have been doing all along.
In a decent country any project has a time frame and if the contractor fails to deliver it attaract heavy fine from the contractors. Even if they procurement is coming from the sun.

The design is still on after 10 years. Did the two yrs increase in our population effect the design?. Nothing i won't hear in this NL. Its only Nigeria that is increasing in population.
Desperate measures.

If you don't understand the percentages quoted say so and I will still break it down for you.

I never contradicted myself as regards 50% or 70%.

Stating that you can spend 70% of both time and money without anything to show on ground on a typical EPC project does not mean that stating that Engineering (which is just 1 out of the 3 components that make up the project) may take up to 50% is wrong.

Are you really educated at all because the level of comprehension here is really abysmal to say the least.

One last thing, are you really sure you know what you are saying by claiming that OBJ promised light for all by the year 2000 in his manifesto? Are you aware that the power projects were initiated at least 4 years after OBJ was sworn in and that the expected completion date was after 2007 which makes the issue of failed project a non issue since the project time frame has not been exceeded?

The level of reasoning you are displaying here is rather shocking and very unfortunate.

Enjoy the rest of the day.

presido1:
Contradicted the second quoted above. But how can some law makers tour a site in 2007/8 when we were promised light for all by 2000. Am missing something here.
70% for design shocked shocked shocked 30% for to excute 70% design worth of contract. ana m anu. Only in Nigeria.
Intelligent discussion like 70% design and 30% execution.
I guess it makes sense to clear a few misunderstandings here.

1. Who promised you light for all by the year 2000? OBJ that you focused on came to power in May 1999. Was he the person that promised light for all by 2000? If yes, did he do so while in prison or after he became president?

2. Your comment on 70% for design and 30% for execution goes again to show how ignorant you are on the issue you are dabbling into.

A little education for you.

These contracts are called EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) contracts .

Engineering may even take up to 50% or more of the project duration because every other thing depends on it.

Procurement is the next stage and the actual units or components are usually fabricated in yards outside Nigeria based on specifications from the Engineering stage. Issues as little as type of soil have a lot of impact in the fabrication of these units.

This also covers the shipping of these units to Nigeria.

The last stage is construction which does not take time when compared to the other stages because the bulk of the work will be to build concrete slabs, bolt the assembled units or components to the slabs, do the relevant tests on process lines for integrity, confirm instrumentation and control, fire off the turbine with whatever you want to use as fuel - in this case gas which must be delivered to the site.

Now, if you are intelligent enough to comprehend the above you will then understand why 70% of both time and money may be spent and you will not see anything on site as our law makers stated.

The good thing about a discussion forum like this is that it will give you ample time to embarrass yourself if you choose to.

In any case, this is not limited to Nigeria. This is common practice all over the world for contracts like these. The only variable that may speed up the whole process is procurement if the fabrication of the units or components is done in the same country thereby reducing or elimination the associated time frame in shipping, clearing and other administrative overheads.

If the government cannot prevent armed robbers, assassins and political thugs from having guns then it should allow innocent Nigerians to own guns so as to protect themselves since the police cannot even protect them.

How many defenseless Nigerians will have to die for some of us to begin to look at this issue with all the seriousness that it deserves?

May be until we lose relatives and close friends before we begin to sing new songs as is normal with Nigerians where apathy to an issue turns into empathy or sympathy kpakpa when the issue gets close to them.

There is punishment for murder and no sane person will harass anyone with gun when you know that the person you are harassing may even kill you in self defense or that onlookers may even kill you the moment you shoot a defenseless person.

Learn about websites. HTML remains the basic thing. When you are comfortable with the basics move to CSS. When you are done with the basic structure and the role of CSS play around with existing websites. See if you can replicate them.

Once you get a handle on these then if you want to go a step further you can read up what a programming language does and where database comes in.

Now, I know I have not given you a web development cook book or A-Z of web development but if you take things easy and learn what you don't know you will understand so much that you can do anything.

I am not even a computer engineer so if I can develop websites even with extreme programming then anyone can do so. Knowledge is out there, it is even free. All you need is the willingness to learn and the patience to follow through.

Web development is not complex but things must be organized, rules must be obeyed. You must like it, have the passion for it and must begin to look at issues from a logical perspective otherwise you will just dump programming because it is all about logic.

I may be wrong but the best route is to understand the individual components and how they relate or depend on each other.

It is just impossible to compare Ibori and Sanusi. Where does one start? One has ill-gotten billions, the other has recovered (and is still recovering) ill-gotten billions. One is an ex-con, the other is an ex EFCC Chairman. One has previously been convicted on a couple of ocassions in the UK, the other is in exile in the UK for fear of his life. . .

The list could fill a page.
@Beaf,

E be like say wetin Sanusi dey do as CBN governor don vex you to the extent say you even write hin name instead of Ribadu for ya post above.
PoliticsRe: Should Private Guns Be Allowed In Nigeria? by Afam(m): 4:27pm On Sep 29, 2009

i'm of the opinion that they should start allowing we citizens to carry licensed firearms.
with the rising spate of kidnappings and armed robberies in the country and with the cops nowhere in sight.
we should be allowed to defend our selves.
the only thing that makes a robber or assassin boldly walk into a citizens house is because he knows you are not
f@%$#g armed. if he knows you have a pump action or 12 gauge shotgun in the house, punk would think twice b4 stepping up to you.
our law makers should pass it into law. a friend in kubwa (Abuja) had to run out of his home after robbers robbed him the fifth time. the last time they came, he called a police patrol and they cut the line on him severally when he was trying to describe his location.
please anybody who knows how i can get a licensed firearm should tell me. i'm a responsible citizen and i wont allow myself to be terrorized by a nincompoop just because he carries a gun and i don't. WORD!!
I agree with you completely.

If the relevant authorities cannot keep prevent armed robbers from having guns then they should allow Nigerians to have access to them as that will put a stop to a 4 - 10 man gang robbing luxurious buses on the expressways or house to house on a complete street with impunity.

Afam if you see good thing say it in spite of anything, i have examine the site, its true he was not the programmer but designing is totally different from programing. i went to joomla community forum i asked them about copyright removal, they said i am free to remove if but they will appreciate my credit. i even asked so many questions regarding to removing and re-branding their script which they answered my willing.

so coming to georgen post. he did well. what visitors need i a web site is not to know the type of script it was made from but how simply and appealing the site looks not forgeting the information they were looking for.

Naija guyz imbibe the spirit of creativity.

So my last comment is that he did a great job, its not easy man!
Is there anything wrong with any portion of my posts? If any, please put it down.

I chose to focus on something concerning the post. The website owner did not start this thread but a friend of his that made comments that may seem like a Nigerian did this from scratch. Go and read the very first post and you will see why I responded the way I did.

I started using (but stopped) Joomla when the name was still Mambo over 6 years ago so I am clear about what it can do and what it cannot do as a content management software.

I'm not asking whether he CAN be arrested. I'm asking what will happen if he is arrested.
Did you miss the reproduced post below. I answered that question the first time I responded to this thread.

Afam:
Nothing will happen if he is arrested today just as nothing happened when OBJ and the late Yar'adua were arrested and jailed by Abacha.

Ok let me believe you $5Billion, is that not enuf to send somebody to prison? For where they are still your heros till today. You guys make me laugh.
The money was not wasted. OBJ showed his sincerity in solving the power problem by setting up the power project and if President Yar'adua had not allowed the clueless law makers to waste over 1 year in the power probe while turbines that were already built and imported were at different ports waiting to be cleared we would have come close to improved power supply.

However, some contracts were awarded to incompetent people no doubt.

Some law makers repeated told Nigerians that they toured some sites and in some cases they saw nothing implying that the contractors simply collected money and disappeared which does not make sense considering the type of contract the power projects were.

It is perfectly normal to spend over 70% of the whole money without seeing anything on ground unless you want them to photocopy the engineering designs and calculations, laminate them and spread them all over the project site.

Let us challenge the corrupt in the society with facts and logic. Let us expose their hypocrisy with intelligent discussions and questions.

I live and work in Nigeria and so I face the same problems Nigerians complain about everyday but I believe the easiest way for the corrupt people to get away with what they do is for us to hold on to misinformation and lies being initiated, sustained and spread by some of the corrupt people claiming to be journalists in different media houses.

Bottom line is this, OBJ made mistakes during his 8 years in power but when it comes to power supply and electricity there is no head of state or president that has come close to what he did as regards improving the state of power supply. This is a fact and while we oppose him for his mistakes we must not deny him any positive contribution he made while in office.

Afam: When are you going to finally realize that it doesn't require muscle to mostly get things done correctly?
What was that? What has muscle got to do with the issue on ground?

In any case, I am not a muscle person. I prefer logic, fact, truth and common sense.

A girl stopped me today and asked me if am a Nigeria, i said yes, she said ok that they are signing a petition on light up Nigeria or watever, how can we be signing a petition in 2009 when somebody spent $16billion to give us electricity by the 2000. That same person is today our "elder states man" whom Ribadu wanted us to accept for a third term. Are we this stupid?
Who spent $16 billion for electricity?

This is why some of our leaders even the corrupt ones laugh when Nigerians discuss politics and corruption in Nigeria.

So, even when a lot of people including the same law makers that were screaming $16 billion have come to state what a lot of people have known all these while about the lie that no more than $5 billion was released for the power project.

If you still believe this lie then there is a huge problem in your position.
