For those of you wishing another person speedy death may I remind you that death can even visit you while typing this type of comment. |
Hello, One thing I have noticed is that new projects often come with lots of misinformation and grey areas. The issue of price remains a major one even though the reason for price differences is not usually easy to explain especially when the prospective client would tell you that he/she paid N30,000.00 to the designer that worked on the project before or that we have received proposals from other people and none of the prices quoted is anything close to what you are asking for. One thing that has worked like magic for me is this - Prepare two proposals for the client First proposal will be for a static website with the basic functions Second proposal will have all the features of the static website but will now include database, programming, other dynamic features that will require custom coding With these two proposals it becomes very easy for the client to understand why your price does not have to be the same with with another person is proposing even for the same project. NB: This applies when discussions about the project must have been finalized and price remains the only issue and certainly not before concluding on the understanding and workability of the project. |
holymike47:Dey dia, you think say na only ogbono be draw soup? Haven't you heard that the police need more training and more guns? With two guns he is more than armed to handle any situation. Just thinking, why not suggest to the Nigeria Police to produce something like the Police Academy series? It will sell like mad and the actors will make make money than they will ever make collecting N20.00 at check points. |
bug24:Make dem win me. Some of them have abandoned web development already because they don't understand web development and have refused to learn and do what works. About borrowing me your gun, no sir, I no need am. It seems you will be needing it more than I do since it could be you work tool as regards hostage taking, kidnapping and militancy. Abi you never surrender your own gun as others dey do or you no like the amnesty offer by the FG? |
yawa-ti-de:In fact, what the guy did with the thumbnail is wonderful. That must be pure magic! |
I have heard from a Nigerian that was deported from China that Nigerians in China belong to different cults as extension to the cults in the universities and engage in all manner of gang/cult wars. Now, the horrible part is that he said Nigerians who swallow drugs and unable to "release" them on time are simply killed/butchered and the wraps taken out before they burst inside their stomachs. He said the Chinese authorities now give suspected drug carriers some liquid to drink and this makes excretion difficult so that the drugs will simply burst and become useless. So, some Nigerians who swallow drugs here in Nigeria with the hope of making money once they get to China end up being killed in cold blood just to save the swallowed drugs. This is reality and this is a shame. Killing people to make money. As regards any form of enlightenment campaign I don't think it will work because Nigerians hate truth, they prefer lies and misinformation so regardless of how you present factual information they will still follow what their minds are telling them and in most cases you get to see them talking big, building castles in the air, boasting and hoping at the same time. |
The newspapers are disappointing in this regard as they are ready to accept adverts from satan if he pays the advert fees. Now to the victims? Were they drinking kaikai when they paid money into bank accounts without any verification or confirmation? I still maintain that most 419 victims are stupid, lazy and greedy always looking for easy or quick money without any serious effort on their part. So, someone expects to pay say N400,000.00 and then go into the place and choose any car of your choice even if it is a Hummer jeep. I guess the government should consider jail terms for some 419 victims maybe that will make one think twice before engaging in any business transaction. |
larez:Funny enough we fail to realize that the same police we criticize is simply a product of our environment and actually represents a mirror image. I don't offer bribes to policemen or NEPA officials and I don't give them even when they ask. Nigerians want others to fight their fights even if it means dying for them so that they can enjoy themselves. I really pity people who contribute to the mess and when challenged begin to attempt to justify their actions or inactions. |
GEW:I agree a lot of people are corrupt but certainly not everyone. It is all about integrity and credibility and in all honesty these things are not common with Nigerians. I try to maintain a sane environment around me regardless of what is happening around me by insisting on the right thing all the time regardless of the consequences. Not an easy way of life anyway but worth living if you must not become like the average Nigerian that does not see anything wrong with 419, murder, bribes, other vices etc. |
wablux:1. I am not corrupt and I am a Nigerian so it is not every Nigerian that is corrupt. You need to change such defeatist mindset. 2. That right man could be you. Don't run away from your rights and expect another person to fight your fight. 3. If you do your part and I do my part as regards offering or giving bribes to policemen trust me a day will come when policemen will resign and those on illegal road blocks will look for other jobs as no one is ready to give them bribes. Will change come easy? I don't think so. Is change possible? Yes Can Nigerians do this? Yes, if there is a will there will definitely be a way. |
biggjoe:Thanks. Yes, I use DW when the task is simpler and write custom code when it is not. remoranger:Thanks. ADDT unfortunately won't be getting future updates by Adobe. This is one bad thing about selling your business to another company as the passion and vision of the business may just disappear. |
Tech Pros:Ok, now I understand. I thought you had issues with the post proper. I was simply disappointed that the contact page of a TV station could come up like that. I guess they may have used a page with database information to create the contact page. |
Tech Pros:Need what for? The contact information or the post? The only reason this error is showing is that both the developer and the client have not clicked on the contact us link since the site was developed or that either (or both) of them did but felt it wasn't important to correct. This is the contact page of a popular TV station that we are talking about here. |
Clicked on the contact us page on Channels TV website and got the following contact information. Warning: mysql_select_db(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL-Link resource in /home/channels/public_html/contact_us.php on line 75The problem now is that I don't have any program to decrypt the message. http://www.channelstv.com/contact_us.php |
Jarus:Gbam! Unfortunately, some of us respect some journalists and believe them even when they are misleading us or talking about things they don't have any idea about. Jarus:Exactly! You can criticize someone from morning till night without manufacturing lies or spreading misinformation. |
bilms:The laughter is understandable because in your opinion all we all need to do to stop corruption in the police force is to dress in suits all the time instead of defending your rights. About people who have been forgotten in prison because they failed to pay N2,000.00 may I also remind you that some have even lost their lives without having anything to do with the police. Offer bribes or put on suits even when the sun is shining like mad if you want to but do not attempt to justify any bribes offered because it will be like an armed robber trying to justify his robberies. |
Many Nigerians don't know their rights and majority of those that even know their rights are not ready to enforce them. Nigerians all over the world are celebrating late Gani Fawehinmi. Do you think they are doing so because he kept negotiating for his freedom? I drive myself, I use okada and sometimes with my laptop and I see these same policemen on the road. People should stop this nonsense excuse about arguing with them and the risk of being shot or locked up. Don't you know that the police will naturally take advantage of your fears. Tell them you are not afraid of being locked up and that you know your rights and that you are ready to defend that right even if it means dying for it and more importantly make it known to them that you will not be giving them any money for anything because you have not done anything wrong. Personally the reason why Nigeria is the way it is right now is because people are not bold enough to insist on doing the right things at all times regardless of the inconveniences or problems they may face in the process. Each time I read or hear any of these excuses I pity Nigeria and Nigerians the more. |
Thanks for all the comments. I only hope that we can use our skills, knowledge and experience to better the society or provide services that will be useful to all. |
Nice pictures. You may upload them here on a dedicated website to celebrate Late Chief Gani Fawehinmi. I just uploaded one of them right now from this thread. www.ganiliveson.org/photos.php |
Cactus:Thanks. Noted. Done. |

An online website has been setup to allow Nigerians and indeed anyone to sign a condolence register for this rare gem with unquestionable integrity. As quite a lot of important news and events fade away after the initial reporting I believe that Late Chief Gani Fawehinmi indeed fought for the defenseless Nigerians, risked his life and remained consistent in the struggle for justice and as such deserves more. Whether or not the government will choose to immortalize this man is what I do not know but I think I may have spent the most fulfilling 5 hours in developing a website project by putting up one for Late Chief Gani Fawehinmi. Visitors can sign the register, post pictures of Late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, post news and articles that have anything to do with Late Chief Gani Fawehinmi. In fact, I hope that this will have a comprehensive information about this man and will remain a reference site even for Nigerians yet unborn. I hope that he did not die in vain. Website: www.ganiliveson.org NB: This is not a commercial web project and as such will remain free for users/visitors and will not entertain any paid advertisement on the website. |
Hello people, Just a quick one. While commenting on a thread about Gani's death someone wondered if there was a way to sign a condolence register and I thought of an online condolence register and decided to setup one. After 5 hours or work I came up with the following website that will be dedicated to Late Gani. Considering what the man stood for in life somehow I have this feeling that the 5 hours spent on developing this site from registering the domain name to database and programming involved was well worth it. Who says you cannot use your skills to provide services without being paid for it. This is not a commercial project and I hope people get to use the website to celebrate him. Any comments on adding or updating any features are welcome. www.ganiliveson.org |
Someone asked if there was a place she could sign a condolence register earlier and I thought of setting up a website to celebrate this great Nigerian with an online condolence register, user contributed articles, news and photo album for the defender of the Nigerian masses (www.ganiliveson.org). I pray his struggle will not be in vain. Rest in peace! |
Rest In Peace the peoples' FIELD MARSHALL. You were indeed a shining star. Your honesty, courage and unquestionable integrity will never be forgotten by all well meaning Nigerians. |

Mandatory 40k monthly fee for mobile phones blacklisting service wrong The agreement reached between a service provider Netvisa and the NCC to charge every single mobile phone line in Nigeria 40k every month for a mobile phone blacklisting service is wrong and should be made optional for subscribers who want to benefit from the service. Forcing people to pay for services they never subscribed to, services they are not even interested in subscribing to or services they don't need is wrong and considering the fact that money is involved here may be looked at as a scheme to rob Nigerians of their money without having the opportunity to say no or yes to the plan. The issue of a mobile phone blocking service has been on for many years even though it was clear that the GSM Operators did not want to implement this as it would affect sales of lines which they were not ready to gamble with otherwise why would any credible operator oppose or refuse to implement solutions that would discourage the stealing of phones? Now that we have a plan to implement this phone blacklisting service in Nigeria we must not allow either the NCC, the service provider Netvisa or the GSM Operators to make the 40k monthly charge mandatory for Nigerians because in reality there will be Nigerians who will not need the service at all and I doubt if such Nigerians would want to pay for something they don't need. As a Nigerian using a GSM phone I dare state that I do not want to be charged 40k per month for this service and see no reason why my money should be taken and given to a company for a service I do not need. Some of us may reason that since the amount is small that it doesn't matter but while this reasoning may make sense in some scenarios I still believe that it does not make sense in this one simply because taking money from someone against his/her will surely amounts to stealing or robbing. 40k x 65 million lines = N26,000,000.00 (N26M) per month Or N312,000,000.00 = (N312M) per year While I would not begrudge any Nigerian business entity for making money from any services rendered (as long as it is legitimate) I will oppose any attempt to charge Nigerians for services they may not want to benefit from. Put differently, the decision to take a subscriber's money every month should be made by the subscriber and not the NCC, GSM Operators or the service provider. If nothing else, the subscriber should respected and not treated as a pawn in a chess board where the subscriber is used as a tool to win a financial war. By not allowing the Nigerian subscriber to decide whether or not to take part in this blacklisting service the bodies responsible for the agreement thus far reached may be accused of doing so strictly based on financial returns. As for the service provider's statement that the mandatory 40k monthly fee is backed by NCC I must state that such backing doesn't make the decision a right one just as we have seen a recent frequency auction plan cancelled by the FG. Let us learn to do what is right, it is not impossible to do so. There is plenty money to be made in all sectors of the Nigerian economy if only Nigerians will begin to see the huge problems here and there as opportunities to make money and provide reliable service at the same time. Bottomline is this - the initiative is good, makes a lot of business sense but charging every subscriber (even against the subscriber's will) is wrong. The service should be based on subscription with the flexibility to opt in and opt out of the service whenever the subscriber wants to. http://afamnnaji.com/articles/article_detail.php?id=60 |
Majority (if not all) 419 victims are plain stupid, lazy and greedy. When greed takes over the thinking faculty of a human being he/she begins to reason with the left leg. The victims usually hope for easy or quick money and when they realize the money isn't coming they begin to complain. People should use their brains to analyse business proposals or ask others when in doubt. Personally, I don't have any sympathy for these so called victims and have wondered why they are not also treated as partners in crime instead of calling them victims. |
Interesting post. These days I often use the following lines to justify cost of web development especially when it requires programming - A programmer can make things happen on your website, like search for documents or content, send a document somewhere, allow people with specific credentials to access a portion of your website, choose what they want to see, update content on the website regardless of location as long as you have access to the website etc. On the other hand a web designer will deliver a finished product like a beautiful signpost that will remain the same no matter what the visitor does on the website. In other words, programmers make things happen on the web. Agreed, programmers are less visible because programming takes time to learn unlike web design where almost all operating systems come with or have easy to use web authoring tools that you can use right away. But that is where the money is, a good programmer will discuss and insist on hundreds of thousands or millions of naira on a project and the client will still be pleading whereas when it comes to design the client will tell you that he/she can name many people he can give the job to and in most cases the client does just that whether the project is well implemented or not. Every aspect of web development is important but it is easier for a web programmer to handle the design part than it is for a web designer to handle the programming part. Just this morning an idea came to my head while adding a new article on my personal website about allowing any registered member to be able to post articles, photos and comments as against those that must have contributor status. It took less than 5 minutes to change all the relevant codes to make this possible and upload all the affected files to the server. Without a programming knowledge I would have looked for a programmer to pay to do this less than 5 minutes job and I am sure that whatever I pay for it would be more than the naira value of the time it took me to make the change happen. |
