Amarabae: Nonsense. So he should be allowed to continue criticising Catholics when they did not offend him, Why don't him mind his business Without condoning the stupidity of some of these Pentecostal pastors, i don't think he has committed any crime here. |

Ishilove: Finally finished watching Black Panther.
There is a saying in my place: Don't look too closely at the anus, otherwise you will see a lot of rubbish.
That said, I will not come down too hard at the movie for the simple reason that for once, Africa is not depicted as a starving, corruption ridden continent at war with itself. Like someone pointed out, it is movie that gives a middle finger to racists like that Professor Hugh Trevor-Roper, who infamously described African history as 'darkness'- the ..."unrewarding gyrations of barbarous tribes in picturesque but irrelevant corners of the globe..."
This is a Hollywood production, and the past years have seen producers doffing their hats to minorities in productions Coco that saw an all Latino cast for the first time ever, and Black Panther is one of these bold forays into uncharted Hollywood territory.
While it is flawed in many aspects (let's not even go there), the saving grace of the movie is the depiction of Africa and Africans, although it is even faulty in that aspect. Seriously, most African societies have a system of checks and balances that can prevent even the most autocratic leaders from completely destroying age old traditions. Even if he succeeds, it can't be done overnight. A stranger cannot ascend the throne and in a blink of an eye destroy a kingmaking practice that has been on ground for centuries. The movie producers got it wrong there.
Be that as it may, I love the music and some of the action sequences. The acting is average and the gaddem fake accents distracted me from the dialogue, but I simply enjoyed feasting my eyes on that eye candy, Chad Bosewick. Chocolate! Meooooow
My favourite line in the movie is..."don't scare me so much, colonizer!"
7/10 is my verdict, and I'm sticking to it Let me go and watch it first but i have a feeling that no matter how good it is, i will be underwhelmed because of the hype that the movie gas garnered. I've not met a single person who has had anything bad to say about the movie and that's why i'm scared because i tend not to really like what most people like. I hope i'm wrong. |

TSOM: You are on this thread 'reprimanding' folks who think Nigerian tribes are basically Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba yet, still on the same thread, you are stubbornly insisting Ibibios and Efiks should be lumped into one tribe regardless of their differences?
You are supposedly 'enlightening' ignorant folks but you insist on staying ignorant even in the face of the enlightening facts I laid bare? The ironic hypocrisy of it all!
I'm Ibibio and you wouldn't override my history with your ignorance. That ignorant folks use Efik and Ibibio interchangeably doesn't negate the truth - it is wrong. What you think you know is inconsequential when matched with facts.
I never said Efiks are Ibibios or vice-visa. I only lumped them together the same way Hausa-Fulani is lumped together even though Hausa and Fulani are no where as close as Efik-Ibibio. Before you make accusations, you may do yourself a lot of favour by putting things in perspective. |
Culture › Re: Southsouth- Southeast, Are They Related? by Afam4eva(m): 4:57pm On Apr 30, 2018 |
TSOM: There's no such thing as Efik/Ibibio (Efik or Ibibio). They aren't interchangeable words one group.
Efiks and Ibibios have similar (almost too similar even) cultures, languages, names and the likes but they are different tribes.
Efiks are traditionally found in Calabar , Cross River State and its surroundings while Ibibios are indigenous to Akwa Ibom State. Ibibios are a larger tribe than the Efiks, Annangs and Orons put together, with the latter two being ethnic groups in Akwa Ibom State. I think you're teaching the wrong person. I'm aware of the differences between Efik, Ibibio, Annang and Oron but to me, they're the same people no matter how much they choose to balkanize themselves. Besides, i won't be the first person to use the Efik-ibibio nomenclature. |

There's no 5 star hotel in Nigeria let alone 7 star. Even the Burj Al Arab that is reputed as the only 7 star hotel in the world is actually not seven star as there's no such thing yet. |
