Politics › Re: Can Nigerians Pay Their Electricity Bill by agitator: 2:49pm On Apr 17, 2010
@Op

I don't know why some of you privileged to be abroad think like this. May be you don't know that prepaid meters are all over the place. For you information any new town being connected to the national grid is on prepaid meter.

Someone pointed out the case of Nitel, you cleverly skipped it and talk only about the recharge card issue. Are you inferring that people also tap MTel the mobile subsidiary of Nitel that got its license for free, with masts and microwave connections spread all over the place. yet cant compete with the newcomers who have to start installing all equipments from scratch. acquiring generators, masts, land to build/erect, creating their own microwave and even bringing in the latest in communication (fiber optic networking)

be real, Nigerians are ever ready to pay for services provided it is what they want.

People are clamoring for a regulated all comers market not a few being licensed to monopolize. you allow anybody to set up business by following the rules. Not the system where 1 or 2 licenses are presented for bidding or issued to cronies.

Seems some people are desperate to dodge the facts of the matter.

- Jonathan appears to have a weak command of English.

- So therefore he's likely to have poor reading skills.

- If he has deficiencies in reading and writing, is he the best person to be representing Nigeria?

- For example, if he's asked to sign a Nuclear treaty, would he understand the document?

- Therefore we must ask - Does Jonathan's deficiencies pose any risk to Nigerians?

- What if for example Jonathan is taken advantage of by a smarter, sharper individual (e.g Obama?)

- Its me and you that would suffer - Not Jonathan.

- People who have strong reading and writing skills also tend to be good speakers. The have larger vocabularies!
Mr orator, presidents are not lawyers they just don't sign treaties. For your information treaties are not documents that are just presented and signed. At least as and educated man i believe you should know this fact. remember we are not in a dictatorship, the country must agree even though we are used to thinking that the president has dictatorial powers you as a well educated master should know it is not so

@Iceblue, this is a life lesson for all.

Rather than focus on what the next man thinks of you and painting a FALSE picture, focus more on IMPROVING Yourself and the people will see it. Singapore did it, China has done it and is still working hard at it. Iraq is doing it, even Mexico is working on it. Nigeria ought be doing that rather than worrying about which side of the field foreign media chooses to focus on. We cannot continue to make excuses every time someone decides to focus on a particular area and not the one we would prepare they do. You cannot go around controlling what people choose to focus on, but you can work on improving the country so that they have nothing of what you do dnot like, to focus on.
Thank you very much for this post.  Nigerians cry foul and whenever they see bad image of the country on news.  the so called western media you think is only showing the bad side are international media houses, their local media houses takes care of the shi.ts in their countries, so they don't have time to compete with them since they are playing on the international stage.  If you don't like what they are doing why not tell your government to apply the Iran system where they have Press TV also airing every negative news from the west to the whole world and the Iranians.

Once upon a time everything wrong about Yar'adua as a leader was once what made him one of us Nigerians.

We celebrate mediocre leaders when they rise or are rising to power but turn around to make noise when they eventually fail.

You need to criticise your leaders to keep them honest, they need criticism to strive for something better than what they met.

But folks will not tolerate any criticism of their darling Goodluck Jonathan. With an attitude like this our leaders will continue to fail.
Please kindly tell us, how perfect grammar and speech translates to the development and well-being of Nigerians?

Truth be told is that there is not enough focus on the costs to society of having a bloated civil service. We could have funds that should be set aside for public works being gulped by recurrent expenditure.
On the other hand a lot of these workers could be more productively employed in the private sector.
i hate when people go round in circles avoiding the obvious.  most of the posters,  including you have stated the necessary things - good road network, well funded schools etc - for job creation. but you have just continued to beat around the bush.  Ask workers in the civil service and see the number that will prefer the private sector to the civil service.  It is an established fact all over the world that the private sector pays higher salaries than the civil service. and you see people moving from government employment to private sector not the other way round.

the poster does not know what he's saying.the way things are done in nigeria is diferent how they are done in other counries. when we are saying enabling environment, we are talking about government policies that focus on creating and maintaining an overall macroeconomic environment.it focuses on regulatory frameworks and actions of the government to improving the economy as a whole.
just like others have said that since the central government controls the resources, then it must provide the infrastructure, utilities and facilities for the masses.
1. no country can ever develop without energy especially electricity. the power sector lies under the legislation of the central goverment. PHCN has been unbundled but nothing is happening because the conditions for operation are not favourable. the issue of petrol, diesel also lies in the hands of NNPC, nothing can be done concerning this issue because individuals cannot own oil blocks except you a crony of the goverment.
2.loans could be accessible abroad with little interest, but here you will never get a loan and even if u get, it will be at 30%interest.
3.communication;even though this has been privatised, still cost of making calls are still expensive due to the issue of energy, no electricity and diesel is very expensive and sometimes very scarce to get.
4.sometimes to allow investors come in on, there should be tax incentives but here every tier of government will collect different types of tax from signage to cars with company logos, tax for having a diesel tank in your company etc. infact the tax especially in lagos is too much.
tensor777:
You appear to miss completely the main points we have been arguing here. What we are saying is that the private sector has to be at the forefront of investment and job creation. Certainly the government has its responsibilities like providing security, funding public education and maintaining roads.

That is how it operates in the West which you claim to have lived in for many years. I am not aware that the central or the various local governments in  England  do run commercial ventures. On the contrary local governments here concentrate on things like roads and public parks maintenance, primary school education, management of local libraries and refuse collection. All these activties are funded by council tax.

The state, local and federal governments in Nigeria certainly do not need to run transport companies or manage utilities  like water electricity or telecommunications.
What I find laughable is that some people here expect the government to be the referee and a star player at the same time. Well that approach has never worked so it is time to try something different.
and you are sure they have done all these and people are still complaining? have you experienced the nightmare on the east - west road which is a major link road.

No body is crying for government to provide all these things as you people are imagining. move to bayelsa state and see what is happening. People applied for land since 1999 till date none has been allocated. yet you see people building houses without a good town plan in this modern age.

sometimes when privileged people like you discuss, people just imagine if you are real humans. Like the house of assembly members claiming ignorance of police collecting money at the check points as if it is hidden. The same people who have used public transport at one time or the other, even if they have not used it, must have seen them collecting as it is done in the open.

Ikengawo:
people are flooding into nigeria to do business and almost half of the FDI sent to africa goes to nigeria annually, so i dont believe that the government has made the environment bad for business, nigeria is great for business but can be better, if we as the people pull together and do our part instead of pointing fingers.
foreigners are flooding in and yet the nigerians are crying no jobs! Haven't you heard of Coca cola that moved it's concentrate plant to Ghana?

I don't know how publicly condemning the actions/killings will stop this bloodshed.   how many times has how leaders condemned corruption in public?  Africans say one thing in public while their hearts are on something different.  I have not seen where condemning has stopped anything.  Suicide bombing is condemned by all the middle east and north african countries, yet it happens daily.

Well you need to look at the substance of the guy's post and not the form. His argument is very legitimate and perhaps novel to some Nigerian ears who have been indoctrinated from an early age to believe the government should be the major player in the economy.

This very American view, if I may say, on the role of government may sound radical to some dyed in the wool socialists here  but it is certainly what is in vogue among financial experts and economists in the corridors of power in Abuja.
you people that are so versed in the american system, do you know that oil exploration is in the hands of private individuals? that if you acquire a piece of land any mineral found belongs to you, the owner? and you pay taxes to the Counties, which in turn pays to the States and States pay to the Federal Government. The Rockefellers started out by buying up lands and prospecting on those lands whereas in nigeria you need a license which is not easy to get as the lands are sold in blocks. remember your land can be sold of to any oil company without your consent. so when making your comparisons include this in the equation. "There is no law like land use decree there."

have your also asked them, If nigeria was so good why are they schooling abroad?

I understand your concerns, but the points i was raising is completely different.

I was saying, if the money collected is used for its original purpose, that might be a good thing(well maintained roads).

Sometimes, we just need to be a little positive and we may get good things. But if the only thought you have about everything is bad, then you'll only get the bad.

There is power in your thought and speech.
We have been positive for a long time without any results. Nobody is against paying levies or taxes. Do you know that people contribute money to buy cables, poles and transformers just to have light? That in some areas residents contribute to work on the roads leading to their accommodation? etc. I want you to be aware that nobody is against levies and taxes but promises not kept after collecting. angry

We pay to GSM operators to use our phones on their network, PayTV operators (DSTV, HiTV, etc) to watch TV and countless other things, why won't we pay to have better roads, pipe borne water, etc. Nigerians are not fools.

Spot on bruv.

In addition, to the above

Depends on the chosen career,

1. A PhD is required for most jobs in Research and Development even at entry level. A good example is Schlumberger, A Mphil/MRes or PhD is required for entry level jobs in their REMS department.
Somebody already pointed this out. It is required in mostly research and development with past work experiences, not just the PhD

2. Some engineering career require highly specialized MSc degree, a good example is Civil Engineering. Most Structural engineering firm would prefer a candidate with MSc in Structural Engineering than a candidate with BSc in Civil Engineering. In the UK, MSc in Traffic and Transport Engineering is highly preferred for entry level job in transport consultancy than BSc degree in Civil engineering. I know of someone with a first degree in Law and MSc in Transport/traffic that was chosen for an entry level job in Transport/traffic Engineering consultancy above candidates with BSc Civil engineering just because of his specialist MSc.
For most consultancy jobs, specialist knowledge is required, and that is acquired after some work experience.  You don’t require a civil engineering degree to become a transport consultant.  Just like you don’t need an IT first degree to become a Data Security Consultant.

For once, why can't look for the good thing in some initiatives.

The ministry of works is trying to generate money for road maintenance - great

They intend to do this by rebuilding toll plazas - also good, only thing i notice, just like a lot of other people is we shouldn't be going back and forth. First, we destroyed, and now we are rebuilding. On the other hand, since the fuel tax was cancelled by the court of appeal, this is acceptable.

What we need to do, rather than condemn is to look for ways this can work for us.

What use is condemning if you can't suggest something better.

My contribution is, for this to work, it has to be 100% transparent, no corrupt practices.

Also, i believe we can make the card system work for us. It will help with accountability.

No electricity, but GSM operators are working!!! When there is a will, there is always a way.
