CultureRe: Niger Delta Attire. by AndreUweh(m): 12:45pm On May 30, 2011
Ibibio might have been in the South South geo political zone but not in the Niger Delta. Niger delta means where the River Niger emptied into the atlantic ocean. This includes lower Rivers, Bayelsa and lower Delta states. Soon another dullard will come and claim that Obudu that is very close middle belt is in the Niger delta. Its a pity.

You're a northerner, Obiagu. You ought to know better than most that 'Igbo' featured in northern and western cultural areas as both a proper name and the name of a variety of northern/western settlements, as opposed to the south. Its not difficult to imagine how Europeans came across the name.
Yet Rumuigbo and AmaIgbo are in southern Igbo cultural areas.
CultureRe: Delta Igbo, Bendel Igbo: What Does That Even Mean. by AndreUweh(m): 3:15pm On May 29, 2011
There is also a place called Igbo-Etiti in Anambra or Enugu state.
Even before the Europeans, there were names such as Igbokwe-One of the slaves that Ezeagu posted here is called Igbokwe.
I believe Igbo is much older than what some posters here think. Whatever the case, Igbo should unite more rather than divide.

^^^Kwe in Igbo means to agree or consent.
HAVE YOU NOT HEARD ABOUT IGBO KWE NU before.
There are so many names for God in Igboland just as in other languages.
For example--Chukwu
Chineke.
Olisa, Olise, Olize.
Obasi.
Chiokike.
Olisabuluwa.
Chukwuabiami
ETC.
Please reread Ogbuefi's post once again as he did explain this. Goodluck.

@Ogbuefi1, thanks a lot for your post. The current Obi of Owa might have played the devil's advocate in the past, but at the present, he is a repentant man and pro Igbo. Last year's summer, the Obi was in the U.K and he spoke to Igbo Youths in the U.K. He praised the effort of Ndigbo since the end of the war and canvassed for strong Igbo unity irrespective of what side of the geo-political zones we come from.
This was in London 2010, but I do not know if he is different while in Nigeria.

BusinessRe: London Retailer Shop Adopts Hausa Language To Woo Customers by AndreUweh(m): 2:31pm On May 28, 2011
Lazy calculation by the superstore. Hausa men in the U.K are very scanty, less than 5,000. Even the ones that come from Nigeria do not go about on suits. In a country where the Yorubas are about 60,000 and Ndigbo 50,000, it is abnormal not to include Yoruba and Igbo inscription that Hausa. Wrong move.

Also know that Port Harcourt became Igbo when the Igbo became so powerful and popular after the first military coup that produce Aguiyi Ironsi.

Port Harcourt that was a complete Ikwere land, but started claiming Igbos to stay alive as people were massacred on their down south should they claim not to be Igbo by some Nigeria Soldiers of Eastern Nigeria.
What a brainless crap above. Why not just read through what intelligent people posts rather than displaying stupidity in this thread. Since when was Port Harcourt completely Ikwerreland?.
Mind you, Ndigbo have been living in Port Harcourt from day one because Ikwerre people are Igbo people. Ndigbo from hinterland moved into Port Harcourt from 1914 when it was made a sea port to evacuate coal from Enugu to Great Britain. Ndigbo did not come to P.H during Ironsi's regime. I don't know why some brains are so think to learn new ideas. What a shame.

The family is a very important aspect of love in Igbo culture. As a consequence, when you love an Igbo man or woman, the family automatically is considered. It is not surprising that when one pays a dowry, the dowry is for the family, extended family and kindred of the bride.

Thanks for the info. I guess the internet is far from reality. No wonder Agbotean was so adamant.
Don't mind Agbontaen, Ogbuefi is an Ika and a proud Igbo. Thank God, Ogbuefi, Omonuan etc are here to rewrite the crap Agbontaen has been preaching in the W.W.W.

Those who said sort of were---20%.

2sleek2NV:
18th century Afonja (Are-Onakakanfo) Sheik Alimi, ILORIN

These heroes of Ilorin arrived Ilorin at different times and in different circumstances.

Sheik Alimi was an Islamic Missionary propagating Islam and its teachings across the land. He sojourned for many years through villages and towns across Yoruba land. He had followers with whom he moved around to establish the tenets and principles of Islam. He was temporarily settled at Kuwo village very close to Ilorin where he built mosques and houses. From Kuwo, Sheik Alimi continued to explore other territories where he could spread and establish his beliefs and settle down permanently.

During the course of his exploration, Sheik Alimi discovered a river that flows through villages, which he sought to know its origin. That river is river Asabuh known today as river Asa. He traced the origin of the river to the present day Ilorin. He thus began to visit the area with the aim of propagating Islam. He later settled at a hamlet within the vicinity of the river. The hamlet was occupied by the Fulani, his kinsmen. The hamlet was known as Gaa Fulani and headed by Olufadi. Around this location were other hamlets like Idiape, Okesuna, and Gambari which also had their traditional heads. Within these hamlets was a major spot where there was a big stone that was used by the locals to sharpen their metal objects such as farm implements. That spot where the stone is located was referred to as Ilo-Irin. It served as a meeting point for the locals to interact. Unfortunately, Sheik Alimi could not interact with the people due to language barrier so he relied on Olufadi, his host, to interpret for him As Sheik Alimi began to interact with the people with the aid of Olufadi, he warmed his way into the heart of the people.

Meanwhile, Afonja, the Are-Onakakanfo of Oyo Ile, a war commander of the then Alaafin Aole of Yorubas was in a nearby hamlet, close to Gaa Fulani seeking refuge having lost a war, the Iwere war. In the then Yoruba tradition, a warlord must win any war failing which he must commit suicide.

Having lost a war and not ready to die, Afonja fled his native land, Oyo Ile, to escape the wrath of the Alaafin. He therefore sought refuge at Idiape. While in the community, Afonja with his status as a veteran warrior became very influential and powerful. He soon began to threaten peoples of nearby hamlets which hitherto have their leaders such as Gambari that had Hausa people with their leader known as Sarkin Gambari, Okesuna headed by Solagberu and even Gaa Fulani where Olufadi was.

However, as at the time of Sheik Alimi's arrival at Gaa Fulani, there was palpable tension in the hamlet and its environs occasioned by the threat of Alaafin to invade the hamlets and effect the arrest of the fugitive Are-Onakakanfo, Afonja. Afonja had sought the support of the people around him to protect him by not allowing Alaafin's soldiers to penetrate the hamlets, let alone, effect his arrest.

It is in the light of the forgoing, that news filtered to Afonja that a spiritualist with awesome power was in their midst i.e. Sheik Alimi. Afonja contacted Sheik Alimi and an agreement was reached that they will work together to defeat the Alaafin 's army. When the Alaafin army came calling, they were utterly defeated and this deepened the relationship between Afonja and Sheik Alimi. Afonja encouraged Sheik Alimi to take up permanent residence in that area with a promise of sharing war bounties together. From time to time, during the course of wars, any captured prisoners of war will be divided and Sheik Alimi will have his share. While Afonja used his as slaves, Sheik Alimi converted his own P.O.W to Muslims and subsequently set them free to normal lives devoid acrimony or animosity. This kind gesture of Sheik Alimi endeared him to many people of diverse cultures with in the hamlets who saw him as a compassionate person.

However after so many internal and external wars which further polarized the camps of both men and made them suspicious of each other, an eventual confrontation ensued and Alimi defeated Afonja. Having defeated Afonja, Sheik Alimi extended a hand of friendship to other hamlets nearby and formed a larger community with a common belief and destiny, which he headed. That community is now known as Ilorin . The city was named after that major meeting point of the people as a testimony of the unity of the people.
Did Alimi actually kill Afonja?. Various stories states that it was Alimi's childeren that killed Afonja. I will not really blame Afonja for not comitting suicide because life is too sweet. The tradition was a very harsh one then.

SHEHU AL-HAJJ MUHAMMAD AL-AMIN IBN MUHAMMAMAD AL-KANEMI (1776-1837).
Shehu al-Hajj Muhammad al-Amîn ibn Muhammad al-Kânemî (Arabic: محمد لرشيد ابن محمد الكامانی‎) (1776–1837) was an Islamic scholar, teacher, religious and political leader who advised and eventually supplanted the Sayfawa dynasty of the Kanem-Bornu Empire. In 1846, Al-Kanemi's son Umar I ibn Muhammad al-Amin became the sole ruler of Borno, an event which marked the end of the Sayfawa dynasty's eight hundred year rule. The current Shehu of Bornu, a traditional ruler whose seat remains in modern Borno State, Nigeria, is descended from Al-Kanemi.
Al Kanemi waged his war against Sokoto not only with weapons but also with letters as he desired to thwart dan Fodio’s jihad with the same ideological weapons.[2] He carried on a series of theological, legal and political debates by letter with the Sultan of Sokoto Usman dan Fodio, and later with his son, Muhammed Bello.[3] As the expansion of Sokoto was predicated upon a struggle against paganism, apostasy, and misrule, Al-Kanemi challenged the right of his neighbours to strike at a state which had been Muslim for at least 800 years.[4] These debates, often on the nature of Jihad and Muslim rule, remain points of contention in modern Nigeria

If you said Oyo empire not just Oyo, then yes. Why because even the Anagos that are from Dahomey can more or less be classified as Yorubas since they were conquered.
Now about Igbo land. How do we know who is Igbohuh Why can't, let's say, Uhrobo be Igbohuh Ndigbo is a convenient name for loose clans or ethnic groups in the Eastern region. The "Igbo" identity became strong recently because of Nigeria. There was never an "Igbo" in history. The past "Ndigbo" history was with reference to individual clans not as a collective group. Same with the Yorubas after the "inter-civil war".
The Hausa City states of Kano, Zaria, Rano, Daura, Katsina, Kebbi etc fought against one another and never accepted one another as one prior to the establishment of the caliphate.
But in Today's Nigeria, Hardly do you see A Rano man disclaiming Hausa. So why does a group who were hitherto Igbo now tend to disclaim Igbo. Even since the Formation of the modern Yoruba nation, hardly do you see any of the groups opting out. It is only in Igbo that you you will find some morons who feel different.
