It used to surprise me but no anymore. In the West there are just so many gays and lesbians that it cannot just be an aberration. It is suppressed in most potentially gay & lesbian people due to cultural & religious stuff. Lol. Tell us about his body language when calling you pet names na. Any sheepish smiles and winks?  You both will be cousins-in-law soon so he needs to sweeten your heart into the family na. Or maybe he saw your sweetening endowment in the bathroom. Joke aside, in some climes such names among friends, relatives & in-laws are not really big deal. 9ja may be different. It all depends on when & how he does it. If he calls you say "Doris" for example when your fiance is around but uses his most sexy voice to call you "darling and sweetheart" when both of you're are alone, then there might be an ulterior motive. The motive is the most important. Better to address it with him if it continues and makes you uncomfortable. Making him understand that it's not proper, makes you uncomfortable and you will not want to cause bad blood between him and his cousin/your fiance. Darkie with copy copy mentality. When we go invent our own for others to copy? That's why oyinbo nor dey take us serious. We often only manage to do the naff and inferior version of what dey do. All the successful 9ja musicians largely sang or still sing in local languages, 9ja English or pidgin. KOPT33:I completely agree with your position. One has to have principles. Rest assured if your sister's hubby had become state governor and they had all prospered more than you, you'd remain nothing to them. I commend your fulfilling your economic responsibilities towards them. That is what a man should do. Going on with the marriage without your consent is akin to doing it without your dad's consent. Because traditionally your dad left your siblings in your care. The elders who did such messed up big time. If they had contacted you and you refused repeatedly, the elders could have gone ahead. A lot of people saying forgive and just mediate, most would never spend a dime on such relatives. Many also have no respect for African tradition. They'd give it up at the slightest opportunity given half a chance. Whereas they will not consider a church wedding as valid if their "daddy G O" in their church was not informed or the church tradition was not followed in concluding church marriage. If you were not there, who then collected the articles meant for the bride's dad? In my view the traditional marriage is null and void. Sure forgive their behaviour towards you and the general disregard. But marriage is very specific. If your sister had come to harm in her marriage, it would have meant you couldn't protect one of your "children". Even though you had no hand in the marriage. Love your siblings as your father would, but you have to be accorded similar respect. However, consider how the matter affects your sister. How will she and her children suffer if all breaks down? If she will suffer badly, mediate for your dad's sake. But also be sure that both your sister & her hubby want you to mediate. After that they have to atone/apologise for their previous behaviour. Becoming basis of English law, that came to shape laws in commonwealth countries. Before 1066 in England wealth to be inherited was shared among all surviving children. Later only the senior son kept the wealth & any hereditary titles. The new system ensured conservation/preservation of wealth in one family that lasted for generations. Previously the wealth was so thinly spread among children that it vanished quickly. While the old system might seem fair & just, most kids frittered away their share, ending in poverty. Because some kids just wanted for father to die and get a share. Refusing to work hard. You can say that the senior son can also just wait for their dad to die and inherit all the wealth. Possible. But the senior son was made to understand his huge responsibilities and obligations to his siblings growing up. He was trained. Training one person was much easier than training 10. In the days when only very few people were literate. So younger kids were if possible settled early through occupational training or public service jobs like becoming a carpenter, farmer, smith, clergyman, reeve, military officer, sheriff, haberdasher, iron-monger, dyer, clothier, etc. So they were sorted early on to be self-sufficient. |
