My problem is not that other races look down on us. After all all they see about us on TV is poverty, famine, wars and perpetual begging for their help. They looked down on the Japanese 100 years ago and the Chinese just 50 years ago.

My problem is that we keep sucking up to those who despise us. We keep believing that they will solve our problems. We have refused to look inwards for strength.

Advanced countries only want to associate with you when you have already pulled yourself out of the doldrums. To bask in your success and take credit as those who helped you. If you fall by the way side they kick you even deeper into the bush.

FamilyRe: I Am Beginning To Despise My Parents... Am I Overreacting? by AreaFada2:
twosquare:
It's kind of funny at the bolded in this 21st century. What is expected before? Stay with them till someone comes to pick you? Since you have a job, get yourself an apartment like others before me said. You are 30 years old. My fiancée is just minus 2, doing her own business, and she already got her own apartment living alone.

I couldn't agree more with Stallion93 and davep...I don't know what went wrong. Maybe you haven't noticed, if you look at our parents, they were given a free hand by our grand/great-grandparents. Most of them. They may not be literate, but they know that when a child has reached a certain age in their twenties, it is time to be independent, and it is no big deal. It is ironic that it is the supposed educated/literate ones who are messing up with parenting. I still don't understand. Desirae, you just have to free yourself o... No one would do that for you. Naija parents of their generation love to keep children under rather than set free like those before them did.
Look, most of the educated parents who left villages or semi-rural areas to bigger towns early in life got their freedom early. Just like you mentioned. Their time was a libertarian one. From the 1960s upwards. In that time many were up to no good and made mistakes while being students or young employees in the cities. Despite regaling you with stories of how decent they were, most actually weren't. grin cheesy

I have been shocked lately to find out just how many of the women got married because they got pregnant in the mid 1960s to 1980s! grin cheesy Those still alive are now about 55 to 75 years old. I thought pregnancy out of wedlock was VERY rare back then. It wasn't.

So many parents have secret regrets from own mistakes. They are trying to ensure their children do not do same.

It might seem hypocritical to expect you to keep very high standards they couldn't back then. But maybe they believe their own parents failed them through inadequate guidance. And they do not want to do same.

We are lately also in an era of conservative religious revival. The opinions of church members/clergy matter once again to parents.

They are basically trying to live the "perfect" life through their children. The result is parents becoming over-protective.

OP should make it clear that she wants to be close to her place of work if possible. Or any such half-way plausible excuse. They will be riled by it initially but will ultimately accept it.

hedonistic:
Nonsense. What makes you an authority in these matters?

There are no hard and fast rules to these things. A man may not discuss future plans with you because he didn't see you in his future, but later realises that you're not bad after all, and bam, he concludes that you're the one... And so on and so forth.

Never follow these 'listed' advice you see online. Life no be 1+1.
Tor!

At times you watch a lady to see if she'll change or to find out more about her to see if she can actually feature in your future.

Some women consistently fail your acid test woefully. You may then be seeking the best way to ease her out. So why give them hope by introducing them to your friends & family?

Often how you treat a lady is a result of your observation and impression of her. Not a show of the state of a guy's own seriousness/responsibility or otherwise.

While some girls want to railroad you to see your family, their attitude clearly points to a disastrous future. She has no future plans each time you ask her, thriftless, chop & quench, extravagant, lives above her means, ostentatious, etc.

A girl can consider her package as great. But a guy might beg to differ. Matter of choice.

I would blame that on the society and the closed mindedness it encourages.

There is also the religious angle which encourages women to be Conservative, ofcourse women like that would loathe having a male rummage around their lady parts.

Is it right? No.
Is it understandable? Yes.

Can it be mitigated? Somewhat. When it comes to issues around the pumpum, women can be given a choice(they do here) of male or female. And if it has to be someone of the opposite sex, they have a choice to have someone of the same sex present as a chaperone. This is to avoid stories that touch.

And I feel that is a good approach, some people can be unethical even in such trusted positions. When I was pregnant, the gp I saw was inappropriate with me. He was nigerian too. I could have reported him for sexual harassment but chose not to. Instead I made sure I always requested a different doctor when I needed an appointment.
Yep but in emergency there's often hardly any choice. It might just be male or female Health Care Professionals (HCPs) available.

As for a chaperone, it's very necessary in the interest of both the patient & HCP.

The vast majority of HCPs are decent, committed and caring.

I have seen cases where women have requested for a HCP not just based on gender but on race too! In one case it was even granted BUT caused an outrage later when other staff found out.
If an HCP was "intentionally" inappropriate, the least is to get him to apologise. If you did not rebuke him or get him to apologise yet you did not report, then other women might suffer same.

Well midwifery care is not just during delivery/labour. You typically see a midwife in the course of the pregnancy. Some even get to choose home birth with a midwife.

There are many women who even refuse to see a male gynaecologist. Many have voiced such here on Nairaland in the past.

Nigerians eat weird animals because of poverty. Vietnamese and Chinese eat weird animals because they believe the animals have some supernatural powers. lol
There is massive poverty in rural areas in those places too.

In Nigeria it is also about culture. Most animals were traditionally hunted or trapped for food. The typical poor Nigerian cannot afford antelope or porcupine meat these days. But you see people in swanky SUVs stopping by the roadside to buy bush meat, so they are not poor.

In some parts of 9ja people do not kill or eat certain animals no matter how hungry. Some Urhobo groups will never eat monitor lizard, some parts of Ebonyi will allow certain snakes slither about, etc. Yet in other parts these are sumptuous delicacies.

Every one claims not to have it. Is it ghosts who have it? grin cheesy

But the really big issue is hardly anybody will tell you directly. Same with BO.

The people you perceive theirs may also be perceiving "yours" without telling you. Just like you did not tell them.

The "flavour" may become normal to long term partner/spouse. For example it baffles you how a lady will not know she has a very bad VJ smell that fills the room during/after sex. They do not because they have become used to that pungent smell.

There are many people who are pretty clean & normal but have a certain body flavour related to a certain spice/cooking ingredient that I just cannot stand. Especially among ethnic groups & others that use that spice in majority of their cuisine.

Fact is 200 years ago most people didn't use ogbonge perfumes & dentifrice. We have all become VERY sensitive to odour.

The more chemical compounds we use in hygiene products the more we disrupt our normal commensal flora.

People keep mentioning Listerine. It not only kills odour causing bacteria but also good bacterial in the buccal cavity.

Finding a balance is key.

Pataricatering:
If you had asked this one now before he was caught he too would be shouting “ jail them 14 years “ “ homosexuals deserve death “ blah blah blah !
Yep! Fact is there are many gays out there. Very many. We forget that. Some resort to abusing kids believing they can intimidate a kid to keep quiet about it. Whereas approaching the wrong adult for gay stuff might land him in prison. NOT making excuses for child rape o.

Some say an.us has becteria, well take a swab of vagina and see under a microscope first. Bacteria dey repete like anus. Yet men are crazy for VJ.

We just do not know why people like what they like. I have dealt with many openly gay people and nothing make them look different. From menial workers to professionals like lawyers, medics, professors, etc.

They are some of the most educated and best informed about sexual health. They typically seek medical care more promptly than the average heterosexual. In the West I mean.

In Nigeria there is just too much hypocrisy made worse by criminalising it. Such that even when they seek medical help they won't tell doctors their sexuality. Therefore doctors may not give them the best medical care or advise. That puts everyone else in society at greater risk. Because the very many undeclared gays go on to date women and marry just too look normal to society.

The girls they sleep with may multiple date other men, potentially spreading diseases.

We may not like certain things but once they exist we must look for the best way forward. Pretending that it should not exist just drives it underground.
So ignorance and hypocrisy puts us all at risk.

When we said it at the time Zombies were huffing and puffing.

Our currency is no use to the Chinese. They want to shore-up their currency, make it go global and get more countries to hold their foreign reserves in Renmibi. They see renmibi competing largely with dollars and Euro.

We get our foreign exchange (95%/oil) in dollars and the Naira is weak against all major international currencies. Our economy is not growing at a fast rate and no other major goods and services that China would need from us worth billions of dollars. Why would China think they'd benefit from a "swap" deal? It still baffles me why women have to change their names because of marriage, who introduced this tradition? huh,for instance my name is Isabella Peters and I want to get married to Mr Phillips, so after marriage I'm going to change my name to Isabella Phillips or Isabella Peters Phillips??.
This has to stop, I keep wondering why feminists don't include this in their agenda angry
First of all ask why you need a surname at all. surname did not even exist in England until 1066 When the Normans/French introduced it. We in English speaking countries follow English pattern.

Traditionally in most parts of Nigeria, a bride marries into a NEW FAMILY. That is why a lady is given to both her husband & parents-in-law to look after. She gets a new family and the names goes with it. Previously you will go live in a big family house with several unmarried sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and their wives, etc.

Your new family had the duty to look after you as a new daughter. And kids you will bear. So taking a new surname (that your kids will bear anyway) seems a small price to pay. Women your own blood brothers will marry will bear your maiden surname too.

Now we all have the right to challenge tradition, after all everything evolves.

But you cannot continue to accept the roles of the man such as "main provider" for the family while doing away with the traditional things women have to do. Bride Price & marriage list should also be ditched.

Heck, we might as well forget about marriage. Since tradition is now irritating to some. Just have kids with a guy and retain your precious surname.

Davido, Whizkid and others are already pioneering that approach. cheesy grin

Very sad. Those cars deserve to be repaired. Most are vintage cars now.

Hardly any car will ever get as popular as 504. Not even Camry or Corolla. 504 was bae.

Later we got 504 station wagon PAN tear rubber. Official car with driver. Mum did school run with "tortis car" mostly. cheesy grin

Later as family got bigger we got "kiakia bus" aka danfo for school run. Later on Mercedes 230 became like Sunday/Church car. It wasn't bought new though. It was a couple of years old. Bought off a family friend relocating abroad on official job.

Those days there was hope of gradual progress in life. It reflected in your car, house and increasing comfort over time.
