See all those without any traceable or relevant culture spewing nonsense. Forming European. Those that sell their vote for 3 to 5k and know nothing about Western world in detail. If they see somebody put otumokpor on their doormouth now, they will run away. If you do any nonsense within the palace and palace staff see you, they will not wait for anybody to instruct them before they deal with you. The palace has had guilds that are responsible for every tiny detail for centuries, long before oyinbo came. The palace is still better organised than Aso Rock where staff cannot write correct English or date on important letters going to NASS. ![]() |
post=59762709:Do not mind him. Nigerians yearned so much for order & strong hand that they voted for Buhari last time. It seems we Africans lack the discipline to do things right, unless forced to do it. Although Buhari has disappointed but he only won because people wanted him to come and sanitise things. |
iyketex007:Confab happened under GEJ regime. Even touching it would indicate that Jonathan did something right. Not something APC and the North want to happen. They hope to use blaming Jonathan to secure 2nd term first. ![]() |
hyo6:What is your price per year? |
Osho has to save his loot. If not EFCC will hunt him down. |
oloriadebusola:So you have forgotten how much debt we paid off & how much was totally wiped off? The records are there o. |
Hypocrisy per excellence. |
konoplyanka:I now respect Igbo. Anyone with sense is now Osu? ![]() It shows they really make more sense. Something masters of bigotry & betrayal hate with a passion. ![]() You guys are already choking on Buhari induced poverty and hatred of Jonathan, a man who is now the unit of measuring political maturity, booming economy, rule of law, humility and fighting corruption without killing the economy. |
udejiga17:True. Said this many time. |
konoplyanka:Another from the tribe forming respectful, cultured, educated and sophisticated. Keep following your Fulani masters. Yes, Buhari is part of our problems, past & present. He has now been in the 5th govt government in Nigeria. Murtala Mohamed's, OBJ's, Abacha's and his own govt now. You kiddies hear stories, but do not learn from history. Buhari overthrew our nascent democracy in 1983. Now, let reasonable people imagine the evolution our democracy would have achieved over the past 34 years. As someone who lived through Shagari govt, it was 10 times better than Buhari's current one. The so called corruption was a child's play compared to current Buhari's one that cannot equip even Aso Rock clinic. Enjoy the recession, it will have no effect on me or my generations. I am far from it. |
dangotesmummy:Ah! Lots of men now fear the responsibility of having too many kids o. Many modern women are already "codedly" doing contraception. The injection/depot type & the man is none the wiser. After 4 or 5 kids he cannot drive the wife away on ground of infertility. Many kids come not really because they are desperately wanted but because nothing was done to prevent their conception. Empowering women is always key. Remember the percentage of educated men is still higher, so enlightening them is still a bit easier. Why can we not do that? Are you suggesting we should stand akimbo doing nothing about it? |
konoplyanka:Lol. GEJ caused all of Nigeria's problem since 1914. ![]() Shame on you guys. A bunch of bigots. All the dictators and looters since 1966 left Nigeria similar to Singapore before Jonathan came, bah? Heck, before GEJ, Nigeria could not even boast largest economy in Africa, each state could not boast a Fed university, railway had been dead since early 1990. You wanted power, now you have it but cannot use it. Was it not to fix the so called issue caused by GEJ that APC campaigned and was voted into power? See me see wahala o. Now APC have realised that to make outrageous promises & to deliver are too different things, they keep going back to blame game. Shame. Serious shame on zombies. Because you lot have evil mind, you only saw evil in all GEJ did or tried to do. What is wrong in telling Nigerians to meet to decide the way forward? GEJ had far less than a year to implement Confab result. Which we know would still be hindered by NASS. But at least he made a good effort. |
Hmmmm. Na wa o. |
RIP. |
0b100100111:Well at least GEJ took a step towards making the Nigerian entity work better. He convened a National Conference so that Nigerians can discuss the way forward. What has Buhari done so far? He has brought more poverty, joblessness, lopsided Federal appointments, presidential absenteeism and 97% & 5%. Hardly stuff that unify a country. |
Pidgin2:Call it what you like. Truth is bitter, especially in Nigeria. In like token I also have no respect for so called oil billionaires like Danjuma or whatever. But Nigerians like you worship wealth. However people got their money is irrelevant. Whether as a reward for shooting Ironsi or opening leg for some dirty generals. You are free to emulate your role model. Your life, your choices. |
Once you mention oil as part of their business, forget it. All na through military dictator, powerful politician/military boyfriend or connection. They are part of our oil curse. I respect those who did not grow through oil. Even if they later have big men sugar daddies. |
Na wa o. Nothing person nor go hear. |
Igbo & industry are like 5 & 6. Nice. |
Love really hurts these days o. |
Great |
dangotesmummy:Sure culture plays a big role. But culture is not static. It has been evolving steadily. Enlightenment should not be encountered first in hospital. It should begin with community field nurses & midwives, at school and well before childbearing age. At the moment, the govt hardly justifies the right to tell people what to do with their own reproductive rights. It has no social welfare system to assist the poor, needy or large families. For example, you are more likely to take the advice of your caring parents, uncle or aunt than those that care less or are aloof. Same with government. Only those who realise that such advice is in own interest irrespective of government attitude that will take it. And that would be better educated, enlightened and those who can weigh things properly. People need to be empowered. For example targeting uneducated young mothers to take up adult education. In a functioning federal system local councils can be empowered to handle such adult and social education. |
And they hide name of the church. So that more can lose their money. Na dem sabi. |
See frustration. ![]() |
ObalufonIII:Ok. I take moving with the times as the key message. I also think the "universality" of the word Oba has increased its attractiveness in Yorubaland. Oba became a stand alone superior title after Ogiso era in Benin. Pre-Eweka I it was Oba-Godo as Ogiso, from Eweka it became Oba. I believe the other matter is that there was no other ruler called Oba as a title within core Benin territory or areas that originally came under Benin rule. The lesser title Enogie (mostly princely dukes, Oba's younger brothers/younger sons made provincial rulers) & chiefs (Ogie) were devolved to those people. For example, in Esanland, Onoje are the normal titles of traditional rulers there. Orodje, Ovie & other titles in Urhobo land. The first Olu of Warri (Prince Ginuwa of Benin) only got the title "Ogiame" or Lord/ruler of the Seas from his father Oba Olua when leaving Benin. That set the title Oba apart long ago already among Edoid people. Whereas Oba title seems ubiquitous in Yorubaland. The Yoruba who sees many Baales turned Obas everywhere in Yorubaland may not readily realise the singular significance of it in Benin. |
ObalufonIII:What period in history are we talking of? How many centuries before? Benin & Yoruba are Niger-Congo/Kwa languages. Couldn't they have developed independently, perhaps with some similarity or closeness in original root word now lost? I think the problem with finding the truth is "my mannliness is bigger than yours" tribal positions people take. If that is the case, why is virtually every prominent Yoruba King now using the title "Oba" from Alafin to Ooni? In the Conference of Western Region Kings held in Benin in the 1940s, only Oba of Benin used the title Oba, while others were Awujale, Ooni, Alafin, etc. Why are they all now officially using Oba title if it is meant to be lower traditionally? ![]() |
dangotesmummy:Good. That is reality. Hence I said not much any of us can do to impose our ideals on others. No matter how reasonable or well-meaning they are. People have different beliefs. It is govt job to enlighten the citizens. Or give social welfare incentives in a stick & carrot manner to check population growth. |
Eziokwu1:I was still writing when you replied. In official use, the proto word had reduced in importance by the 12th century. Though still used. For example, by around 12th century, during the interregnum, a local chieftain, Evian & his heir had declared that "Ogie era mien vb'Edo, ai mien Oba". Meaning, only a chief now obtains in Benin, no king. This was in opposing senior Benin Traditional chiefs' mission to seek Ekaladerhan's/Izoduwa's return from Ife. Of course, the great grandson of Oba Eweka I who was Oba Ewedo later granted the descendant of the opposing local chieftain/usurper the chieftaincy title "Ogiamien". Ogiamiens's palace today is today a Federal Government national monument, said to be the longest inhabited palace/home in West Africa till today. By 12th century some ducal titles like Ogiegor (who was Oranmiyan's father-in-law) at Egor village near Benin were pretty established. At least over a century before the Uneme scenario here. |
ademijuwonlo:In theory if the Benins (not Binis as wrongly written widely, and corrected by the palace & BTC often) were to describe a foreign king, what title would they use? Oba or ogie. The King of Portugal was described as Oba Ebo (King of white people) back in the 14th century already. I see no controversy there. Besides Oba means "shining" to describe the elegance & magnificence of early ogisos also then called Oba-Godo. By 1480 AD, King John II of Portugal (called Oba Ebo in Benin) was not called Oba John II by his Portuguese subjects in Portugal. ![]() Is there any oral evidence of use of the word Oba in Yoruba language dating back to around 1800 to over 2000 years ago? Let us know if there is. |
Bagehot:Yep! cases of "married woman died during marathon sex with married lover in a hotel" happen mostly in those places. 25k can be enough to turn the head of some married women whose hubby has very little income. |
dangotesmummy:Until your parents get tired of you when you have more grey hair than them. ![]() People do not have to do as he wrote. But at least he's proffering something practical, not idealistic or theoretical. Each person can decide that's the standard he wants for himself. To begin with, anyone in such a situation is already down. But it does not mean he's out. His zeal, focus & determination will be crucial in years to come. |
Gerrard59:It is not about coming from anybody. Simple reality is many are having kids without any income at all. Hardly anything you or I can do to stop it. Many cannot even afford condom. Because free WHO condoms end up in chemists for sale. I saw that as a kid in the chemist decades ago already. Some have no information (that you may have) on how to get free ones. Nor be today. While I'd not dare start a family earning below 250K monthly if I was in 9ja environment, millions of people are not going to use yours or my ideal standard as theirs. If they did, there would we far less poverty today. Now, how many people have you been able to dissuade from having kids in poverty? In 9ja, we like to sit on the high horse postulating what is ideal & lofty. Meanwhile the opposite is happening all around us. That becomes sheer hypocrisy. The man is here giving a practical solution on how to manage, not theory. |
