Thank you, but wats your thought
I think home-based Nairaland family members would be in a better position to say.

But I know people in Lagos on a combined family income of 150 to 200k and doing well. Yet some singleton complain that 165k is too small.

Like anywhere in the world it is about how you manage your income and the number of extended family members needing your economic support.

Rejection is part of it.

Sometimes the pretty one you expect to reject you won't. She might not accept right away but persevere. Not pester.

The more you try, the better you get at it. Just don't be too sensitive to rejection. See it as the babe's prerogative to reject or accept.

Abi o.

Let us see it this way. If that man was your/my brother and his enlightened neighbour hears this frequent humiliation, would we be glad to see him get good advice from the neighbour?

Or would we prefer our brother to struggle to bring up another man's kids only for them to desert him in old age?

In Africa, blood is what matters. Once the kids grow up, and he's not their dad, they will go to their real dad. Simple.

The neighbour can do it "codedly" if needs be.

Abacha and others sent billions of dollars to USA, UK, Switzerland etc. Hundreds of millions still being fought in foreign courts to be returned.

And no drop of oil where they come from in Nigeria.

Armed robbery is death penalty. The idea is he could have killed the victim. Out of panic, if victim hesitates/unco-operative or whatever reason.

I think the law is too strict. Armed robbery could be 21 years. If injury caused, it could be 25 years to life depending on severity. If death caused in the act then death penalty.

Who said?

You forget many you see are kids of the elite. They have been to excellent primary & secondary schools too. Some even went to UK boarding schools. Many government officials in 9ja are returnees from abroad and their kids have remained abroad all along.

What is sure is schools have decent facilities, you graduate on time & those who get 1.1 are very focused aside being very smart. There are plenty of opportunities to flex. Quite easy to be distracted.

You have to have been through the system to know.

Having said that, most universities Nigerians come to attend are not among top 25 UK universities.

Getting 1.1 or 2.1 from Oxbridge, University of London Colleges, Edinburgh, Imperial, and other Russel Group (Ivy League) Universities remains tough.

CultureRe: FACTS About The Great Wall Of Benin by AreaFada2:
macof:
cheesy and you call bini an impressive empire? If Bini had no intention of expanding then what is imperial about Bini?
An imperial power seeks to expand,
not just its sphere of political domination but its homeland as well

Learn what an empire does from Oyo.
Oyo expanded its homeland ie. The kingdom of Oyo itself included towns like Ilorin to the north and Ijaye to the south. Dont get me started on the length of the empire(ie. Political domination)

As ive said, Enuwa is the only place under Bini 's official control...that was the camp Orhogbua founded. And its significance dwindled as the Bini people left under Ado were invited to settle in Aworiland...that was after Oba Orhogbua's death? Probably after that of his successor too.

But I maintain that Eko (the farmland that is now the main town of Lagos) was not vassal to Bini. Any Bini claim on the area was on Enuwa(the bini camp) at the edge of the lagoon.
I say this because growing up in Lagos island i never heard any reference to bini lording over the awori people. But Enuwa is known to have been a Bini camp
This is very similar to the case of the transition from Igodomigodo to Bini. How oranmiyan was invited by the uzama, how he set up camp at Usama and later founded a small community(Uselu) on lands belonging to the chiefs who invited him because Ogiemen wouldn't let him in.
How Eweka became the first true Oba of bini, like I've stated before..and so

To now say Lagos was a vassal of Bini, is shooting yourself in the foot, because same argument could be applied to say Bini was a vassal of Ife
You have comprehension problem o. If you do not have reading phobia please re-read my submission you just quoted about expansion.

Does expansion mean scattering majority of your core natives to far flung corners of the empire?

Not in the Benin concept. It was enough to use a handful of Benin elite to rule over conquered or acquired territories. Lagos as a case in point. Soldiers, the prince and a handful of Benin elite like Obanikoro were enough to control Lagos.

How can you judge Benin imperial ambitions and tatics using your own warped idea of empire?
Correction: Oranmiyan did not found Uselu. This is another Yoruba lie. Or those educated at Ibadan.

Usama was a temporary abode/palace even.
Egor, was where Oranmiyan lived. Eweka I grew up there too. His maternal granddad and ancestors had been the dukes (Ogiegor) of Egor since Ogiso times already. Eweka I's childhood neighborhood village at Useh, near Egor is near a relative's ducal palace till today. Same place each Oba goes to chooses his royal name since Eweka I.

Luckily I saw history of Lagos on Lagos State webpage during Fashola time in office. It was very categorical how Benin ruled Lagos.

Growing up in Lagos Island makes no difference since Benin Empire denial began under Awo regime already. We all remember how Yoruba people turned on Oba Oyekan of blessed memory when he admitted his Benin origin.

You certainly do not know Lagos history more than a son of a former Oba of Lagos who narrated pretty much same as I later found out years later.

We have nothing to learn from Oyo. Each empire has its own goals and priorities. For example while Oyo embraced transatlantic slave trade that spread Yoruba to the Americas, Benin prohibited slave trade. Only allowing some parts of non-Benin people of the empire who insisted on slave trade to sell and buy themselves ONLY. So Oyo should have learned about dignity of man and integrity from Benin people. Not making money by any means. grin cheesy cheesy grin

NOTE: There is nothing like "Bini". It is Benin. Oba Erediauwa and Benin Traditional Council clarified this several times over the years. But people (even some Benin people) feel the urge to vernacularise the name. The City is Benin (Edo/Oredo), people also Benin (Edo/Ivbiedo), language is Benin (Edo) too. I know the recent advent of Edo State is shifting Edo to include all natives of Edo State but that is not the tradition.

Well if historians worldwide (aside SW BEDC people) believe from historical facts that it was one of Africa's most impressive, and one international organisation voting three Benin emperors among Africa's most formidable/greatest 50 African leaders ever, well that pretty much sums it up. cheesy grin grin grin

You do not know what you have until you have lost it.

We became complacent about the steady economic growth from 1999-2015.

Even when oil prices declined in the later part of GEJ presidency, the economy held strong. Buhari used it to campaign that he would stabilise oil prices in international market.

Now they use low oil prices, that was already evident during last political campaign, as the sole reason for their sweeping failures.

Scale of what? Go to Lagos, the Lagos i grew up in... Enuwa is the only place that Bini founded...that is the edo camp
I wonder why its not called Eko if Bini truly gave the area the name grin grin

All evidence points to the fact that Awori word "eko" which means farm is the real origin of the name of the city

The Idejo invited Ado from Enuwa to Ido after the death of Olofin of Ido to come bring peace, the same way Oranmiyan was invited to bring peace at igodomigodo. It was then Ado's son gabaro who was the true first eleko..similarly Eweka I was the true first Omonoba...Gabaro led from his palace Igadungaran at the Awori farmland.
Years later Ologun kutere dynasty began and he secured more power for the eleko...prior to this time Eleko was on the same footing as The Idejo, they were the employers and hosts.. same way Ewedo secured more power for the omonoba by intimidating the Uzama
Lol. You are evolving very slowly..but there is hope.

Eleko was on same footing as local chiefs. Lol.

The difference is very clear. But you do not get it. Benin was not looking for "lebensraum". Benin land was and is fertile, more than enough to support the population for another 1000 years and more. Why take creekland full of snakes & crocodiles or even mainland that we did not need from ancestors of Idejo? shocked shocked shocked
Colonising Lagos was majorly for strategic reasons: Empire expansion towards dahomey & coastal trade route.
Even Lagos sort of lost much significance after Oba Ehengbuda anyway after around 1578, though it remain a vassal of Benin until 1853.

You speak down on a throne that supersedes the one in your home town. You speak down on a throne whose coronation process is complex, historical and very spiritual compared to the throne in your town whose coronation is simplistic in nature. You speak down on a throne that gave your town the relevance it has.

To enlighten you the Bini's primogeniture system wasn't always the case, one of your kings, recent one, put the system in place. I think the one who fought with his brother. Prior to this, the Bini throne was open to contest amongst all males of royal blood.

Also, the fact that Ooni-ship is thrown open to every male line tells you the monarchy in Ife has very much evolved for them to have been able to manage such a complex system. There is just one ruling house with sub-houses who all get along and see themselves as one. Money is not used to contest the throne but it is a requisite, every Ooni since Oduduwa to Obalufon Alayemore who is arguable the wealthiest Ooni ever to the present Ooni has to embody 'aje' (goddess of wealth), there's a reason why everyone who must become an Ooni must be birthed by Odu Ifa of Eji Ogbe during Ifa initiation (this Odu not only stamps the person as a head but talks about the aje flowing from every part of this person's body). The problem is, you sit in the comfort of Bini fantasy to speak on things you have limited knowledge of and even attempt to impose your falsehood upon without studying what makes Ife/Yoruba very huge in research areas despite never witnessing European presence till 19th century, 400 years after Bini had been exposed to Europeans.
Abeg stop the nonsense. Ogiso dynasty produced Izoduwa/Your Oduduwa. Ogiso dynasty had about 35 Obagodo/Ogiso before producing Oduduwa.
Ooni position forever remains inferior to Benin throne. The political plot to unify all Yoruba under Oduduwa is clever but not enough to fool us. grin

[[s]quote author=SaffronSpice post=58573877]It is very necessary that we begin to do the right thing henceforth. When Oba Okunade Sijuade joined his ancestors, so many papers carried it then, that the proper procedure in announcing his passage was not followed. They made it clear, that it was the Oore that was supposed to announce the death officially. So, that is the situation. It is a known history, whether it is followed or not, it is another thing entirely.Let me give you a similar example, prior to 1914, when any Oba died in Benin, they must bury such an Oba in Ile-Ife, since the time of Eweka. It was even Oba Sijuade, who said it, in one of the interviews he granted. He said the last one that happened was around 1914 and since that time, it never happened again. The Benin Obas are never brought again to Ile-Ife for burial. Up till now, the Benin people have a grotto in Ile-Ife. Oba Ado Bini where they were usually buried. So people may not now say you must carry the corpse of an Oba of Benin to Ile-Ife to bury. These are the type of things that are fast changing the way and manner things were done in the past.

CultureRe: FACTS About The Great Wall Of Benin by AreaFada2: 11:34am On Jul 18, 2017
SaffronSpice:
During the Kiriji war Oore's recognition as the leader of Ekiti obas was affirmed by Reverend Charles Philip, the messenger to C. A. Moloney, the governor of Lagos by what he wrote in a note on 4th May 1886 about his visit to Okemesi during the war. He said "we first call on Oray (Oore), king of Otun who is regarded as the senior of Ekiti kings. I read the Governor's letter to him".In 1899, Major Reeve Tucker was appointed by the Colonial Secretary to take charge of the administration of Ekitiland inclusive of Ijesha. After his extensive tour of this unit between October 1899 and February 1900, he established the Ekiti council of Obas and Oore was made the president. It is on record that he presided over the first two meetings of the council held at Ilesha in June 1900. Subsequently, Otun was made the administrative headquarters of Ekitiland and the third and only meeting of the council which took place in Ekitiland was held at Otun in August 1900
.

The governor of Lagos, who was in control of Benin former colony of Lagos, just wrestled from Oba Kosoko in 1853. Basically, The chief of Otun was one of most important in Ekiti Land, hundreds of years after it was a Benin outpost on the fringes of the empire.
Clutching at straws explains it perfectly. cheesy grin

Leader of minor chiefs/kings would amount to at most third class category then. Still no gazette stating exact class relative to Alaafin or Awujale for example.grin cheesy
By the way, 1899 is good two years after Oba Ovonramwen got to Calabar exile.

Very recent manoeuvrings by Colonial people to position themselves just before 1914 all the same.
