Tension in Ogun as Muslims, traditionalists clash

By Daud Olatunji, Abeokuta

There was palpable tension in Ikenne,Ogun State, yesterday, when the Oro cult imposed a 24-hour restriction of movement in the town in defiance of an order by Ogun State government.

The flagrant defiance occurred few hours after some Islamic leaders in the town were attacked by Oro cultists for reporting them to government over the planned restriction of movement.

Muslims in the area had petitioned the state government and other stakeholders in the state which led to a peace meeting held on Wednesday at the instance of the state governent.

At the end of the meeting, government ordered the Oro cult group in Ikenne to restrict their activities of their on-going annual festival to their own section of the town.

It further ordered the deployment of policemen in the town to enforce the order, but, when Sunday Vanguard visited the town yesterday, neither policemen nor any other security operatives were seen.

The whole town was deserted as doors and windows of houses in the town were firmly shut.
There was also no human and vehicular movement in the town except the adherents of the Oro cult group that were seen in some parts of the town dressed like females.

By tradition,it is forbiden for women to behold the Oro cult members while on procession.

It was gathered that several residents of the town who did not want to be caught up in the no-movement order imposed by the Oro cult group left the town on Friday for neighbouring communities.

In his reaction, the Chairman of Ikenne local government, Mr Tajudeen Salako, said the action of the group should not be seen as a defiance of the state government order.

He however appealed to the people of Ikenne to endure the restriction imposed by the Oro cult in the town.

When asked to comment on the attack on Muslims, Salako said he was aware that Oro cultists threatened Muslims, adding that it had been reported to the police.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun State, Muyiwa Adejobi, however, said that the police were monitoring the situation in the town.

Ifeanyi Uba

Dear Editor

Many Anambra people have been wondering why a semi- illiterate kerosene seller wants to be governor of Anambra. The first reason is that he is broke and his company will soon go bankrupt. He is known to owe tens of billions of Naira to banks. One of his creditors a Yoruba woman is threatening to close his company for failure to pay the N4 billion he is owing her. The share price of all oil companies have been rising but Capital Oil has remained only 50k since four years ago. The total value of his company is worthless and in big debt. He told some friends that he will need Anambra state money in order to recapitalize his company and pay his huge debt. That is why he is very desperate because he needs Anambra treasury. The second reason is that some of his 4*9 colleagues now want to go after him. Many of those people are angry that after he defrauded Kabila, the late president of Congo and used the money to come to Nigeria to start selling kerosene, he needs government office to clean up his very dirty history. Recently he has started some emergency philanthropy even making donations to churches, priests and bishops, and even building churches. All of these are to let people forget his shady past as a drop out from class two in secondary school and a 4*9 kingpin. People are waiting for him to bring the money he stole so they will help him spend it. Idle politicians are all running around him and they describe him as their own Container but in private they make a mockery of him that he cannot even speak a simple correct English. It is reported that the embattled chairman of APGA has sold the gubernatorial nomination to him, and that is one of the reasons APGA is in big crisis in Anambra. His attempt to be governor reminds Anambra people of one Chief Odunze. Ojukwu’s party in Anambra is to be led by an illiterate kerosene seller. People are waiting for him to borrow more money from banks and come to spend it on politics in Anambra.

I have heard of Igbos who became muslim just to get by and gain advantage in places like the north and Arab countries. Are those stories realy true or they are just nominal Muslims who in practise are non-existent. . Abeg talk another thing nwa nna.
By the way, did you say Ndu-chucks is a northerner for real? Chineke ekwe la ihe ojo. . Hmmmm, why the need to use an Igbo sounding moniker, is he that insecure?

rhymz: Seriously, I feel personally offended that you will resort to insult a fellow Igbo brother in the mould of Onlytruth just to make a point that makes you look detribalize in the eyes of the people you are trying so hard to please. Which perception are you talking about? Between Igbos and Hausas who have shown more restraint in the light of the shenanigans going on in the north, are you a man at all let alone an Igbo person. Is the mosque the only structure that was demolished in that area? Why do you always try so hard to show the need that you are more upright and than every Igbo person on NL. I have noticed you are in the habit of arguing even against fellow Igbos who have done nothing but defend their rights and heritage without having to explain their existence to anyone like you are quick to do. You always feel the strong need to be fair to others even to the dentriment of your fellow Igbo coleagues. If you have any personal grudges against onlytruth, abeg no use am dey paint your comments in a way that you treat igbo interest on issues as inferior to others. In this case Peter Obi has done nothing wrong, his reasons are very valid, if their brothers in the North will use that as an excuse to commit act of voilence against Igbo people, it shows they do not deserve any of their mosque or religious element in any part of the east in the first place. If it was done in Lagos and heaven did not fall, no be our own go com different unless there is more to it for them than meet the eyes.
ndu chucks is a northerner.he has said before and he is not hiding it.forget the igbo sounding id.

ACM10: That mosque should be demolished as fast as possible. It's contributing to filthy outlook of the place. You guys need to be there to understand why it should be demolished. Remember that bridge head is the point of entry to Anambra from the west. How can Moslems inside Igboland give us order on how to beautify a major Igbo city? Mbanu!
i wish you post a pic of that place people who are ignorant of that place will appreciate the eyesore there.i know say u get some pics of osha.

Emperoh: I feel Onitsha, for all the revenue it generates for Anambra govt, has not been given priority development.
This is the same for Awka and Nnewi which are, to my reckoning, glorified villages.
Nothing has gone into planning these cities, decongesting the central areas and pushing development to virgin locations
Anambra deserves more than it's getting. Our trader governor has only done what he understands governance to be.
It doesn't end with building roads and equipping schools.

Exposure and experience is not a thing to be taken lightly.
We boast of the skills and resources to make the best cities in the world.
I bet you, Onitsha is even better off now. Imagine as it were in past administrations.

All things being equal, i think we will get it right.
The good thing is that this administration has set standards. No one can go lower and have it cool with ndi Anambra.

I also think that poor development of critical cities are synonymous with states created in and after 1991; in no particular order
Abia, Anambra, Kogi, Ebonyi, Bayelsa, Osun, Ekiti to mention a few.
I don't think, as things stand in these cities, some of which i have passed through, they are any better than glorified villages.

Spyder, please post the pictures as it.
What Anambrarians like me will now have to do is to post pictures of other parts of Awka and Anambra in general
With this, we can then make a better, holistic assessment and judgement because for all i know, Onitsha is not the true picture of Anambra state.
But that's about the first city a first time visitor to Anambra by road, will see.
from what i heard the present administration has made a masterplan for awka, nnewi and onitsha but it has not yet been implemented.

Pukkah: I simply expressed my surprise that anyone would try to justify the wasteful spending in spite of the suffering of the Oyo people. I had no time to take up one by one the specific posters who justified it. I also praised the London-based Oyo indigenes who protested.

I thought I was clear enough. huh
you are getting worked up over nothing.i simply gave an idea of people that are likely to defend the action and nothing else.i am not sure what the seeming ambiguity is all about.
