Was it not Ironsi's job to stop the coup plotters or is not his duty to protect the nation from threats abroad and within?
Was Ironsi not under the authority of the president and prime minister?
Or do you want to classify Ironsi as a coupist, cos he cannot be both. While key figures were killed, there was still a civilian government in place until Ironsi took over.
Ironsi did his job by stopping the coup, and should have done the right thing and declined power. Do not try to legalize an illegality.
You have not yet answered my question.Where have you seen a coup whether succesful or not power is being handed over immediately to a civilian government that was about or was toppled? This is reality here not idealism.Do you know the level of tension and uncertainty immediately after a coup?

You think say na beans?A coup where a serving prime minister has just being assasinated?Power should just be left for the civilians?I laugh. My guy face reality and not ideal situation.

The Nzeogwu led coup failed to seize power, and it was Ironsi that took control from the senate president led Civilian regime.
Ironsi was not elected into office, he took over.
biina:
The Senate President and acting President of the republic, Dr. Abyssinia Nwafor Orizu, and it was him who handed over the reins of government to Ironsi. Ironsi could have declined.
The Nzeogwu coupists were stopped by someone.Who was that? Was that the senate? You think the senate has or had any mouth or clouth in a coup huh

Where in the world have you seen a coup where the coupist whether succesful or not that the power was immediately handed over to a civillian huh

Okay let us say Ironsi should not have taken over, who should have taken over?

If i may ask who should have taken power at that time after the coup?

The criticism was of his dethroning the civilian regime, and subsequent failure to execute the coup plotters.
If Ironsi had not seized power, and had he executed the failed coup plotters (like he should have under military justice), the civil war, and the antecedent pogrom, would likely have been adverted.
Subsequent governments have shown that you dont need more than a few days to execute coup plotters. Six months was too much time.
Was it Ironsi that that organised the january coup huhHow did he dethrone the then civilian regime huh huh

Oni, Afe Babalola, Ogunlade, others diagnose Ekiti
Politics Feb 13, 2010 By Wale AKinola

In the 1950s and 1960s, the main agenda of the Ekiti people was education.
So high was education on the priority list of  Ekiti, then in the Western  Region, that virtually every household had a professor.

But, with time, the situation changed. The Ekiti people no longer paid attention to education.
So bad was the situation in the immediate past that the people now in their own state (Ekiti) were ranked very low in public examinations. Not quite long ago, the state was said to be among the last eight in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The situation was frightening.

The state slogan, Fountain of Knowledge, was becoming an anathema.
But the man at the helm of affairs in the state, Governor Segun Oni, determined to reverse the situation, said the fortunes of education in the state were returning, thanks to the pragmatic policies of his administration.

Oni linked the downturn in education in the state to the peoples poor economic status.

Most of you were not born during the war but my regret is that there are very few objective elderly Igbo men and women who have cared to research for the truth instead of pushing a lot of lies which are mostly propaganda, was used by Ojukwu to arouse Biafran Nationalist feeling and anti-Nigerian passions which I must say was needed during the war.
During war the first culprit is always the truth.
Do you think Ukpabi Asika was the only Biafran traitor that lived ?
Did your parents bother to tell you that most Igbo political class were against the war includung Amb. Ralph Uwechue the present president of ohaneze.

There are two main culprits who have most blood on their hands but are never adequately mentioned.
Mass murderers who could sacrifice millions of lives for political expediency.
These two parties do not get enough mention in the whole Biafran episode.
They are Ojukwu and the British Government (Harold Wilson).
It had to do with a famous statement Ukpabi asika made after the war when he was given the mantle as the first leader of the then east central state.

Okunoba just some questions as i can see you want to blame ojukwu for the war.Why was the Aburi accord thrown to the trash can?

Why should the Northern Military Officers listen to the British On something that concerns their own future?Since you say it was good that they listened to the British why then do we pretend to be an independent country? Why then we complain that that African leaders cannot make any decision on their welfare without running to the west?

Ojukwu also made statement when he refused to recognize gowon that if he did it was going to set a bad precedence it the military. Now with events that happened after the war in the military will you say he he did not know what he was saying?

Also for christsakes Ojukwu did not declare war on Nigeria it was the other way round.

China overtakes Germany as world top exporter

February 13, 2010 07:47AM
print email

Germany's multi-year reign as the world's No 1 exporter is officially over, with the crown formally passing to rising China after new figures showed that German exports slid by nearly a fifth in 2009, the biggest decline in 60 years.

Tuesday's German government figures only confirmed an open secret: China's runaway growth and resilience amid the financial crisis put its exports ahead of Germany, which suffered a severe recession before returning to growth in last year's second quarter.

Last month, China's customs reported that total 2009 exports were more than $1.2 trillion, well ahead of the 803.2 billion euro ($1.1 trillion) that Germany reported Tuesday.

For Germany, the figure was a drop of 18.4 percent from 2008, although exports returned to year-on-year growth in December.

"The crisis has accelerated the shift in power in world trade toward the emerging countries," said Anton Boerner, the head of Germany's BGA exporters' association.

However, "the fact that we are passing on the title of world export champion to China doesn't cause us any worries," he added. "The growth of the Chinese economy will also secure our growth and jobs in Germany for long years."

Boerner noted that in December demand for German products from all parts of the world was up on the year.

Declining imports indicate that "large parts of the economy are still in neutral," Boerner said. "Everything must be done to encourage and stabilize the upturn in exports."

Germany took over the top spot in terms of exports in 2003, surpassing the US.

China's newfound status is mostly symbolic but highlights its growing presence as an industrial power, major buyer of oil, iron ore and other commodities and, increasingly, as an investor and key voice in managing the global economy.

Its ability to unseat longtime export leader Germany reflected the ability of agile, low-cost Chinese manufacturers to keep selling abroad even as other exporters have been hammered by a slump in global demand.

The change is the second time in three years Germany has been overtaken by China.

In 2007, China surpassed Germany to become the world's third-largest economy, just behind No. 2 Japan and the United States, which holds the top spot.

China's growth also benefits other companies and countries, particularly those in Germany, because of its voracious demand for raw materials, consumer goods and more.

Germany's leading luxury car makers, Mercedes-Benz, BMW AG and Audi AG, all have reported that their sales in China more than doubled on the year last month, helping them to improve their global performance.

Germany, and Europe, is also noted for quality and craftsmanship.

Nick Reilly, the new chief executive of General Motors Co's German-based European unit, Opel, said Tuesday he believes that "manufacturing must have and will have a bright future in Europe."

"Yes, wage rates are higher here than in other countries, but productivity, production excellence, logistics costs, quality and the work force's outstanding skill base largely offset that cost disadvantage," said Reilly, who was previously the US automaker's Shanghai-based executive vice president of international operations.

He pointed to "Opel's German engineering" as an asset to GM.

Nobody is looking down on okigwe zone after all it is this zone that produced the best governor ever from the former east central zone in Dee Sam.

Then representatives from the zone should make a case for equal LGAs but this issue of governor should not be part of it.

It is not a nonsensical formula but formula of mutual understanding. There is no zone that is not capable of producing a good governor.
If Ohakim has any case to answer, it should be between him and other contestants from Okigwe such as:
Emeka Nwajiuba
Ike Ibe
Charles Ugwu
Iheanyi Ararume.
As for Agbaso, he should stop dancing, the music is long over.
Sorry i but i feel this mutual understanding should stop because it breeds mediocrity.I am also from Okigwe zone(Obowo to be precise) and i do not see the advantage of having deceiver and former 419 man in ohakim with his clean and green nonsense in power.

Agbaso should go and sit in the gutter. There is a zoning formula in Imo state. The formula rotates power between the 3 senatorial zones of the state. For example Owerri zone produced Evans Enwerem; Orlu zone produced Achike Udenwa and now Okigwe zone has produced Ikedichi Ohakim. Case closed.
So you think Agbaso should sit down due to this nonsesical zoning formula? What happened to eelecting someone that ACTUALLY won the election?Where is the paper or law backing this formula? If you agree with this 'formula' then why are we complaining of rotational presidency in the country/

Kidnappers release commissioner’s daughter
National News Feb 12, 2010 By Dayo Johnson
AKURE—AFTER spending barely five days in captivity, the daughter of the Ondo State Works Commissioner, Miss Yemi Omogunwa has been released by her abductors.
This was made possible after the father, Pastor Yele Omogunwa reportedly paid N10million to the kidnappers
.
This was coming as the state government read a riot act to perpetrators of the criminal act in the state, vowing not to take kindly to their activities.

It declared through the Information Commissioner, Ranti Akerele yesterday that government would also not enter into any negotiation with kidnappers.

Akerele described act of kidnapping as an unusual phenomenon in the state, saying that Ondo State people were not kidnappers as the act was strange to the state.

The Commissioner declined comment when approached for interview just as Yemi was equally shielded from granting interview by her parents when Vanguard visited their residence yesterday.

The residence of the Commissioner was turned into a Church as family members rejoiced and sang praises after the abductors released her.

The Commissioner’s daughter was abducted last Sunday by six gunmen who stormed their resident in Oke Ijebu area, Akure.

Police authorities who secured the release of Yemi were silent on the ransom reportedly paid by the Commissioner, Pastor Yele Omogunwa before his daughter was let off the hook on Wednesday.

Yemi was reportedly released after her father agreed to pay the ransom and was returned to residence by policemen.
Ondo State Police PRO, Adeniran Aremu confirmed the release of Yemi on Wednesday but declined further comments on where she was taken to by her captives and where she was picked up by the police after her release.

Aremu said the important thing now was that the Police have been able to secure the release of the Commissioner’s daughter.

The Commissioner said government “warned strangers that were involved in the act to stop such as the long arm of the law would soon catch up with them”.

Akerele also advised the people to be vigilant and pay attention to every strange face they noticed in their communities.

The ongoing battle to save his seat took another turn yesterday as Imo State Governor, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, got the leave of the Court of Appeal in Abuja to move his case to the Supreme Court.

The latest move is aimed at stopping the suit filed by the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Chief Martins Agbaso, in the April 2007 election, seeking to remove the governor from office.

Presiding judge of the Abuja division of the Appellate Court, Justice Rabiu Danlami Muhammed, granted Ohakim’s request since his challenger did not object to the move.

THISDAY learnt that the governor yesterday appointed another batch of four Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) to join his legal team.
The newly appointed SANs who appeared for him are Chief Boniface Nwakama, Chief Chris Uche, Chief Levy Uzokwu and Chief Eze Duruiheoma.

Agbaso is claiming that he won the April 14, 2007, governorship election in the state which was cancelled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after the compilation of results from 24 out of 26 local government areas.
He also claimed that he won the election convincingly. He went on to argue that INEC had no power to cancel the poll the way it did and conducted another one on April 28, 2007.

He applied for a court order to compel INEC to announce the result of the April 14 poll cancelled by the electoral body.
The Federal High Court in Abuja had declined jurisdiction to judicially review the action of INEC when Agbaso approached it on grounds that events had overtaken the suit.

The Court of Appeal however upturned the judgment of the Federal High Court and ordered it to adjudicate on the case on its own merit.

Ohakim was however dissatisfied with the Appeal Court decision and had filed an appeal at the Supreme Court asking that the decision of the appellate court be set aside.
The governor hinged his appeal case on alleged mix-up of facts by the Court of Appeal before arriving at its decision delivered on December 16, 2009.
