LOL, just read this and it is totally true. If you can't take criticism, don't be in the music business. Some people will say crap to bring you down, but if the majority are feeling you, then you know you're on to something
The truth is, naija does Zombie a lot. Nobody wants to take the risk first. But if one person takes that risk and comes up with something creative that enters worldwide markets, people will spend even 10 million to copy or outdo that one.
In the meantime, we have to put up with crap music and payola blog comments.

Everything about this story is suspect. Unless there was an eye witness, where did the exact details of the story come from?
Even worse of course is that if it's true, armed robbers can mount a 3 hour operation with no resistance? I mean what's the point of even having a police force. It seems the the only thing there good for is mounting road blocks and killing civilians or becoming pawns for political power brokers.

Are Nigeria's problems actually fixable?
Music/Radio / Re: Please Rate My Beat by audio: 12:49pm On Jan 20, 2011
The programming is not bad, but it's not an original beat. You've ripped off the Young Jeezy track I LIKE IT. Stick to original stuff and you should be fine. You know what you're doing.

Oga, you too take time to read my post.

My point wasn't about Beef alone. I also stated that one may need to redraw their strategy if they are not shifting enough sales. I believe there is room for all to make sales without resulting to the attention-grabbing antics we see.

I think you missed that.

Okay. The problem as i see it, is that they get a bad product and then try and use hype to make you think that it's good. But because the market is so saturated now and they're is suddenly a lot of real talent on the scene, a lot of them are getting found out.

The core record buying audience in Nigeria is the man on the street. Timaya/bracket/jay martin crowd. Rap is normally for the more enlightened that come on Nairaland everyday asking for download links, but not buying anything. I think that is the reason why MI changed his strategy and used more pangolo beats and made his album more pop.

But in a country with a population of 160 million, there is definitely enough room. Even 1% of the population gives you a platinum album

Asides name, and quality of music, part of what Alaba looks at before the sign that cheque is the buzz aka HYPE around the artiste at the time.

It will help people understand some gimmicks artistes pull prior to dropping albums.

That's a good point. Hype is important. It makes people pay attention when your album comes out. But these days, you've already heard half the album before it is released, so most people have a rough idea what they'll be getting and have made up their minds. When 9ice dropped gongo Aso 1st and then Street credibility after that, most people were already dying to get the album. The music created the hype. Not the other way round.

eldee:

Eminem invented hype. . . don't even go there.

Eldee, you didn't even understand my point. Please re read earlier comment.

ElRazur:

Dr Dre made him. grin

NWA made Dr Dre

World Wrecking crew made

Me I don't know what the fuss is about. There is enough room for all to co-exist.

If your album is not selling then re-strategize, do shows or something and come out with what people perhaps want or what may sell?

There is really no room for this beefs and counter beefs, and who is better than who or who sells the most in my opinion.

Taylor swift and those unknown country singers (Unknown to us lovers of hiphop) barely beef but still shift. We may need to look into that.

Who is talking about Beef now? Music is a business, so it matters how many units are being shifted. Do you know how much money storm spent promoting SauceKids album or Choclate ciy on Jagz of all trades? It's not small money. Next Jesse Jagz album, Alaba will say, after all the hype, it didn't sell and they won't want to pay the big bucks.

Music/Radio / Re: Jesse Jags Album Didnt Move 100k Units, Saucekid Was A Flop! by audio: 12:18pm On Jan 07, 2011
As everyone knows, in the music business, there's a big difference between hype and actual sales. You don't listen to hype on your phone or ipod or in your car. It's the music. Even if a song has the best video (ie Dipp) if the songs are shit, their shit.
Take Eminem, never releases any club bangers, but still had the best selling album in the US last year. This is because he makes music that connects directly with the buyer
Don't get sucked into this Internet hype. People spreading rumour and 1000 retweets and all that crap. When the time comes to buy the music, people buy the one they really like.

I'm not surprised about saucekid. Half the time, i have no idea what he's saying and he's lyrics and songs have very little repeat value (Tosinaded, this is my own personal opinion before you start your normal insults and you're a hater gist), which is essential for album buying as you'll expect to play it more than once.

Anyway, until the business is regulated and there is an official chart show, i won't pay too much attention. Alaba buys the album and pays upfront, so the artist has already made his money. Alaba are the ones who really lose or gain in the end financially

Politics / Re: Govt Begins Closure Of Phcn, Transfers Workers . by audio: 2:29pm On Jan 05, 2011
The privatization of energy supply should have been done decades ago. A private supplier will be operating purely for profit and you can't make any profit, if there is no supply, so they have to ensure that there is constant billable electricity being generated.

However, that is only half of the problem. Vandalization of equipment should be made an offense with a harsh custodial sentence to act as a deterrent + all new buildings should obtain planning permission, to ensure that they can actually adequately obtain power off the current network and not just pay someone to illegally draw power.

This is however, an important 1st step. That's if they don't screw it up and chop all the money like they normally do.

A Nairaland mixtape sounds like a good idea.

tosinaded@:

Rapjunkie good effort anyways, shoulda commended the effort b4 making known tuts about the list. . .
My bad aite. . .

Back to the list,

every1 who listend to B.A.N.S wld agree that oti yawere is like the worst on the album! No love should av been there or mayb boyz dan hammer!

In 2010, i rocked badman, rhymtite and is this wut u want by modenine. .dunno where u found urs o!

Proto ft eldee, U sure that aint 2009? Opposite of adults should av replaced that, since u wanted proto on the mix!

And again guy,do u av a prob wiv mr abaga? Number1 ft flavour is good enuf IMO. . .

And as 4 k16, trust me no be say i hate the guy. .buh av tried listening to him, he just dsnt do it for me!
I know say u be fan, just like am a saucekid fan. . .buh we av to agree that k16 didnt av a hit track in 2010 dat rocked the airwaves!
So avn two songs out of 24 is ridiculous to be honest. . . .

U fit talk say me just dey vex cos saucekid no dey,buh no be so. . Edandeymadt was a 2010 slang thnk to saucekid. . Its stil a common sayn on twitter til 2mao. Most peeps rememba african american cos of that song. . . . .

All in all, nice effort and kudos 4  taking the charge second year running!

The only part wey concern me pass na the bonus cuts. . .atleast peeps can start listening to nl talents, outside of nl. .

That's a valid point. Not ridiculous, but valid.Although i like the tracks, i'll have to agree that 1 was a fairer representation of where he is in the game. But then POPE shouldn't be there and neither should PRYSE, but there still great tracks.  Last year was the same. Who really knew skales then the way they do now since he signed with E.M.E, but he still made the tape.
What i will probably suggest is a tightening of the rules. So each artist gets maybe one main track and feature only, to cover more artists and records.
There's no point listing the same artists everybody else is listing. Nairaland has to have the inner track.
If K16 blows big in 2011, then the fact he was on this mixtape will mean a lot more.

Music/Radio / Re: What Are Your Top 10 Naija Hip Hop Tracks Of 2010? by audio: 3:46pm On Dec 29, 2010
Okay. My Top 10. But 1st, a disclaimer.
I don't think 2010 was that good a year for Nigerian Hiphop. Very few stand out moments. Even the great Messiah's MI, Mode 9 and RuggedMan didn't save it for me.
These tracks are the ones i liked the most, that i actually listened to. I'm sure they're some great tracks hidden in albums somewhere, but since i didn't hear them, i can't comment.
Two tracks also just missed out. I like their hooks, but as soon as the rap starts, i fast forward, which is not a good sign.
Anyway, in no particular order, here goes:

1. Olamide - E Ni Duro (Love this track. Can listen to it all day and not get tired, even though i can't understand everything he's saying. Great video too)
2. JahBless feat Lord of Ajasa - Jor ( Saw this on Soundcity and instantly liked it. downloaded it the next day. Still on my Ipod)
3. K16 - Oya (A K16 track that i really liked. Saw him perform it live as well at CARGO. Has strong crossover appeal)
4. RuggedMan feat Chinaydu - Here comes Chinaydu (Banging hiphop track. I'm a bit hot and cold on rugged, but the combo was too much. Great track)
5. K16 feat Unseen - School Daze ( Still on my IPod 8 months later. K16's best track to date for me. Enuff said)
6. Ice Prince feat Brymo - Oleku (No point saying anything. On every playlist everywhere)
7. Pherowshuz - Correct (It's been a while, but over the year, this song has to make my list. Really liked it)
8. Pryse - Kolo (Saw this girl at the Bang Mode 9 show. I think she's Nigeria's best female rapper at the moment. You can quote me)
9. DJ Neptune ft MI, Naeto C and DaGrin - 123 remix (To be honest, not to crazy about this song, but i want it to make the list, cause DaGrin shines on it)
10. Mr Raw Nwanne feat Ransome, Minista Busta and Phyno - Turu Ugo ( One of the best ibo rap collaborations i've heard. Ransome kills it)

So there you have it. These are the ones i want to enter.
Listen for yourself and see if you agree with me.
Music/Radio / Re: Nigerian Parents Paid Rick Ross $100,000 To Attend Son's Birthday by audio: 4:24pm On Dec 17, 2010
eldee:

Hehehe . . . let's throw personal attacks at people and ignore the matter at hand, you learn to drop that B.S in Uni don't you??
It's simple if you're older than I am, your mentality brought Nigeria to the state it is now. . . and you sir, are a  disgrace to Nigeria.

No one who legitimately earn their money will spend it on Ricky?? You obviously don't know what you're talking about.
People have different opinions on things?? How is this any different from the guys that spend £5mil on a painting?? Or Elton John that spent £250,000 on one day of Gucci shopping on clothes he'll prolly only wear once??
Is it safe to say that Elton John hasn't earned his money??

Is it looted?? I don't know, I don't even know the guys . . . now should they have spent that much money on Rosay?? Ionno, I'd have preferred Kanye. grin grin
But it's simple, it's not my job to make decisions on how people spend their money. . . it's not my business, and even if they stole the money, the theft is the problem not Ricky.
So you can sit there and cry behind your screen about other people's problems, you are not my problem.

LOL, forum politics. I don't have poverty mentality, but if i had 100,000 dollars to spare, i know what i'll be doing with it. If he earned the money legitimately, and decided to spend it bringing Rick Ross (not Justin Beiber or Willow Smith or anyone remotely even more suitable), then he's an idiot. But hey, that's his choice. It's his money.

But my problem is, i'm sure it's looted money. Money that can be used to help the life of ordinary Nigerians, who don't have a pot to piss in.
But i'll bow out of this discussion now. Nigerians only think about Money. It's their God. Nothing else seems to matter.

I'm sure in a couple of years, Wikileaks will drop the story on who it was and you'll see for yourself.

It's not your money . . . and you saying you want to hire Osama to blow up a village is extreme and unreasonable.
They have the right to do whatever they want with their money as long as it is legal.

If you think they stole money, go call EFCC.

Eldee's way of thinking is a pointer to everything that is wrong with Nigeria. Nobody who legitimately earned 100,000 dollars will blow it on bringing Rick Ross to a 10years olds birthday party. The money is obviously looted.

I don't know how old Eldee is, but i'm assuming he's a young guy. The next generation. Nigeria truly has no future. Very sad

Typical Nigerian "the government knows best" attitude that's killing the country. If I don't know means I'm not meant to know? Are you for real? They steal our money, go to war, commit atrocities and because I'm not in that "level", I should close my eyes and shut my ears? It's my country too. I voted them in. If I don't have info, how will all that happen?

Reference:

I have no doubt it can be done. Its been done in the UAE and just next door in Lekki. The question remains for how long will it last. Everyone knows ALL island nations face the challenge of ocean level rises between 15 to 30 metres over the next 50 to 100 years. JUST HOW HIGH IS EKO ATLANTIC. No doubt most parts of Lekki have no long term future. In Eko Atlantic have these challenges been addressed. This is pertinent because heavy engineering is very, very difficult and improbably expensive to rectify once established.

My second question is access. Eko Atlantic will be expensive. And except we expect all Lagosians to move into a certain income bracket by the time this island is completed you will still have people pushing in the opposite direction - Ogun state while commuting across longer distances through more gridlock to work and serve the elite on this new island. I know some will say - fourth mainland bridge but consider that the Lekki corridor is growing, this may offer only temporary reprieve when completed. What plan does EKO ATLANTIC have for independent access from the mainland. I would not even speak of internal/city transportation, ecology, power and so on. Someone mentioned taxi drivers. I laugh. Why not add area boys to the mix. I hope it can do better after-all its a private initiative. Why not lay the foundations right away for real mass transit and legislate vehicular traffic to no more than 20% of the populated area.

Anyway good job. Hope for many more such projects. At least someone is thinking and acting. When you see Abuja gradually degenerating into a slum you come to understand that great development ideas and moves are best made by the private sector if and only if the Government creates the enabling environment. How I wish this can be replicated in the Niger-Delta where REAL investors seek to put their money in rather than exploit the land and people and take everything out.

What an excellent comment. Thoughtful and progressive. You be correct guy. If only people like you were in Government running the country, i guarantee things will be better.

But Abacha, an undilute brute of wickedness, was Satan's merciless massenger visited on Nigeria from the Abbyss of darkness, controlled by the Supreme Ruler of the powers of darkness himself. No wonder, as a massenger from a strange land, and truly an allien to Nigeria, he mindlessly looted, despoiled, ransacked and made robbots out of Nigerians, kai! Marriage is based on mutual respect. Nobody should hit the other under any circumstances. If you feel you need to start getting physical, it's time for a divorce. A man should not hit a woman under any circumstances. It's a cowardly and shameful act and should be frowned upon in the strongest possible terms.

it is ok to use another beat and rap on it if it is a mixtape.
but stealing lines and not modifying it well, thats bad, but truth be told everyone gets inspiration from others, me personally i get inspiration from listening to notorious big.! so free the poor boy.!! people make mistakes, i remember notjustok.com crucifying ''smiley'' for making an ordinary cover, sampling and gettin inspiration from others are very common in global music these days.
i guess the wizkid boy has many enemies in the music circuit. if not i dont know why this should be a big deal. haters are everywhere.nigerians sha

Please stop all this hating and enemies talk now. It's too much. This forum is actually helping the guy. So if anyone doesn't talk like a Zombie, he is now a hater? This is quite bad.
It is a big deal because to make real money in the music business, you have to go international. It's a well established fact. You have to look at the big picture.
He can't even perform this song abroad, because if the se7en guys record company hear of it, they can shut the show down.
Please encourage originality. Inspiration and plagirism are not the same thing. Look at 9ice for example. The real deal. An artist i truely respect. |No photocopy.

This is just the typical Naija PHD (PULL HIM DOWN) Syndrome dat worries most Nigerians in the world. once dey see a fellow Nigerian making waves, dey tend to seek and destroy. What is new in someone sampling another artist beat/ song? (not that its right as well) many artist in the US do it day in day out including the big names in hip hop. dey sample old songs and make it theirs. For your information, Whizkid's version is way better than the original despite having lil kim rap in the original. NIGERIANS LEARN TO APPRECIATE your OWN PEOPLE. if this was Drake who did what Wizkid kid did you haters will be all over the dance floor at parties or clubs requesting his crappy song. Inferiority complex will kill una finish.

Any small thing, they start calling hater this hater that. Sampling is nothing new, it's allowed, no one is disputing that. BUT YOU MUST OBTAIN CLEARANCE FROM THE ARTIST YOU'RE SAMPLING if you plan to sell you record legally abroad and avoid lawsuits.

Please talk intelligently. Now that this situation has been exposed. EME should work towards obtaining clearance from se7en for the portions of the song sampled/copied. The song is a good song, that can go far. It will be a shame for it to fall because of something like this.

Please, please, this is what's killing the industry in Nigeria. Small mindedness and people like you guys who talk without thinking. What you are basically saying, is that Wizkid can only blow in Nigeria. Have you stopped to think what will happen if Holla at your Boy becomes popular outside of Africa?
He will be sued to high heaven and his international career will be over before it starts. There's a big difference between stealing a harmony or something that sounds similar, to stealing the Harmony and LYRICS AS WELL.
If you're an artist, write your own song. Don't steal someone else's song that they worked hard for and shot video and featured Lil Kim on and then pass it off as your own original work. Or at least acknowledge the Se7en guy for his efforts.

Na wah for una.
