Press Releases Lagos Presents Three Bedroom Flat Keys To Widow Of Late Naval Officer Recognises 16 gallant Police Officers Nov 16, 2009 - The Lagos State Government on Monday restated its commitment to recognize gallant and patriotic law enforcement agents by presenting the keys of a three bedroom flat to Mrs Olubunmi Oluseyi Awe, widow of a military officer who was slain during an attack on the Atlas Cove Jetty and Certificates of Commendation to 16 Police Officers and men who have distinguished themselves on duties. Speaking at Lagos House, Ikeja while handing over the keys of the flat located at Igbogbo II in Ikorodu, Deputy Governor Sarah Adebisi Sosan who stood in for Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) said the State Government would always stand by officers in times of need. According to her, the death of late Commander A.K Joshua Awe during the attack by unknown men on the Atlas Cove Jetty some months ago showed the commitment and gallantry of the officer in the course of duty. He added that the widow, Mrs Olubunmi Awe who was accompanied by her three children, one of whom (Adun) was marking her seventh year birthday, should take solace in the fact that her husband died in the course of national duty and would forever be remembered in the annals of the history of the nation. While asking her to be of good courage, Governor Fashola said Mrs Awe should be steadfast and ensure that the future remains bright by training the children left behind by the deceased and giving them sound education. He added that like all mortals, the late officer has transited to the great beyond, promising that the State Government would not abandon her and the children in the years ahead, adding that the provision of the accommodation is one of the little ways by which the State wanted to appreciate his gesture. To the gallant Police Officers who have distinguished themselves, Governor Fashola commended their gallantry, assuring that Lagos will continue to recognize hard work amongst them. He said it is very appreciable that despite the many challenges of a very large population that is daily increasing, the State Government is succeeding in effectively combating crime and making Lagos safer for everyone. Governor Fashola said this is being attested to by recognitions which the State Police Command and the State Governor got in Accra Ghana recently as the most Pro active Police formation in the West African sub region and Star Award for laying the foundation for peace in Lagos respectively. Speaking earlier, the State Police Commissioner, Mr Marvel Akpoyibo said the occasion is another demonstration of the commitment of the Lagos State Government to make the job of policing the State easier and reassuring for the law enforcement agencies. He reiterated that it was part of the mandate of the present Police leadership in Lagos to be pro active and wait until criminals strike, saying the recognised Police officers have distinguished themselves in that regard. Also speaking, the Commissioner for Establishment and Training, Mr Jide Sanwo Olu told the audience that the programme is another demonstration of the genuine demonstration of care by Governor Fashola for all those who are saddled with the task of ensuring a safer Lagos. He said the recognized gallant Policemen served as undercover security men who have assisted in nipping several criminal intents in the bud. The Deputy Governor presented Certificates of Commendation to the 16 Police Officers and men as well as Mrs Olubunmi Awe who got the keys and documents of the three bedroom flat while those present sang a birthday song for little Miss Adun Awe who was marking her seventh birthday. The recognized Police officers who have contributed to the prevention of crime in Lagos include Chief Superintendent of Police, Richard Ejeh (O/C SCIB), Inspector Christian Ibeh, Inspector Ojewole Olubunmi, Sergeant Bright Igbinoba, Sergeant Nwakama Friday, Sergeant Uloko Obiabo, Sergeant Victor Omoregie, Sergeant Ahmed Salisu, Sergeant Regina Onyemiazu. Others are Sergeant Patience Biokoro, Sergeant Victor Okeewu, Corporal Osagide Efosa, Cpl Sofoni Gbisama, Police Constable Onome Umukoro, Constable Noah John and Constable Joseph Semon. Present at the brief but very touching ceremony were the father of the late naval officer, his sister, members of the State Executive Council and Adviser to the Governor on Security, Major Tunde Panox. |
Unfortunately, it's the nature of the beasts called Nigerians. We yell, scream and yab when they don't perform. We yell, scream and yab when they do perform. |
And you xpect the man to wave the majic wand and fix decades of neglect in less than 2 years? It's OK to criticize, but being shortsighted, unrealistic and imprudent with your expectations betrays your criticism. |

tosh_acer:Well said, |
Aloy~Emeka:What's with all the Ekiti diversions? I don't think Ekiti has anything to do with what's going on in Anambra. Btw, don't even worry. Y'all carry on with your bickering. It gets tiring messing with overly tribalisitc and defensive folks. You guys keep talking about the federal government as if it's some kind of strange entity from mars. Are your elected leaders from Igbo land not part of every inch of the same federal government? |
Onlytruth:Utter Juvenile talk, I'll pass, |
Onlytruth:This blame federal government for everything syndrome is very annoying for real. People don't want to accept responsibility for anything. What else is the federal government responsible for? Your dirty pata or or your homework? Abeg stop. |
from: nuzo on Today at 03:05:37 AMWhat's PDP got to do with anything? What's their primary identification? Igbo or PDP? This is just an excuse. You fight for your own soul and destiny regardless of political affiliation and differences. Lagos did it and refused to buckle under pressure and financial starvation for 8 horrible years and the PDP blinked first. The fact is, PDP will do to you what you let them do to you and the problem here obviously sounds like the same greed, Ego, demagoguery the rest of the country is paining under. |
Some Igbo folks always bury their heads in the sand? I know you guys don't want to here if from Bankole of all people, but he stated what a lot of notable Nigerians have been saying. Of what use are our elders if they're incapable of settling and straitening out differences withing their respective communities? And what he did or didn't o in Ekiti doesn't take a word away from what he said. You guys are freeking too tribally defensive. |
mekusxxx:Every idiot wey no sabi the meaning of allegedly of course. Abeg stop talking like an illiterate and start acting like you go school. |
Get a freeking life, allegedly mean anything to you? |
Usual standard Igbo rage and pow wow session. |
I have better things to do with my time today. |
E get as e be with your undying fascination with Yoruba people. Sounds like you eat, drink and go to bed dreaming about Yoruba people. You guys spend so much time worrying about other people as if your people don't exist. I'm sure your people need attention, support and help. There are tons of positives going on around your people that we don't know about. Why not spend your time highlighting these positives, show some pride and uplift your people instead of opening all these meaningless threads designed to show/display your shallowness and lack of communal depth. |
ikeyman00:Actually love your comedy routine, |
Funny how the elected people responsible for the whole mess are still flying under the radar and don't get talked about. It's like they don't exist. A sad case of terrorists and extortionists killing and corning their way to riches while state officials are left alone to loot and continue to neglect and abdicate their duties "ala" business as usual. All at the expense of the still suffering average delta folks. Dude in the video took his own settlement and jet off to go worry about his own skin while the ones left behind jostles desperately for their own slice of the action. What a mess, |

The on-going FIFA Under-17 World Cup is one of such glaring opportunity which the football-loving Senior Advocate of Nigeria didn’t allow to slip through his fingers, so says Mr. Israel Opayemi, the Country Executive Director of Wisdom Keys Nigeria. Opayemi sure knows what he’s talking about. His firm is handling the marketing communications services for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup for the Lagos State government through the Lagos sub-seat of the Local Organising Committee (LOC). In truth, since the competition started, the streets of Lagos have been agog with thousands trooping to the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere to catch a glimpse of the young lads playing in the Lagos centre. More importantly, the match venue has been devoid of criminal practices. Even the ubiquitous street urchins, otherwise known as area boys, have avoided the area around the stadium like a plague even as adequate, round-the-clock security has been mounted throughout the metropolis. In the words of the Country Executive Director of Wisdom Keys Nigeria, Governor Fashola has been largely responsible for the success recorded so far at the Lagos venue of the FIFA competition. And for those not willing to drive or take a taxi to Surulere to watch the matches live, the Lagos sub seat of the LOC has set up what it tagged Fan Parks in two strategic areas of the Lagos metropolis where football fans can watch matches free of charge. One of such is the Ikeja Fan Park erected at the popular Tarmac in Ogba. The Tarmac has for long remained a popular address for fun seekers around Ogba, Agege, Ikeja, Ojodu and other suburbs in the area. Pepper soup, asun, suya and other delicacies are those things that lure fun seekers to Tarmac each evening. A second park has also been erected at the Marina Park on Lagos Island. All the FIFA-designated routes are also wearing a new look. There has been a massive deployment of lamp posts along the routes just as 48 sheet billboards now stand tall at various parts of the state. LAGBUS buses have also been branded by the LOC. Opayemi informs that Governor Fashola had, in June this year, despatched a team from the Lagos sub-seat to South Africa to take a look at that country’s preparations for the Confederations Cup. The governor wanted the team to understudy how the South Africans were making preparations to host the world during the 2010 World Cup slated for that country since the Confederations Cup was being hosted as a dress rehearsal for the World Cup. The team from Nigeria was also mandated to visit the headquarters of the Wisdom Keys Group in South Africa. The team, after being shown the various projects Wisdom Keys had undertaken before, reportedly requested that the organisation be retained by the government to assist the sub seat in marketing the world cup in Lagos. Wisdom Keys soon came up with the campaign theme: Lagos. Own The Game. “This theme has both the outward and the inward messaging dimensions,” Opayemi says. “On the outward, it is declarative in intent to the extent to which it tells both domestic and foreign visitors that this is indeed the destination of a people on top of the game of life. On the inward part, the motif is an admonition and a call to action for Lagosians to own the game of life and take social ownership of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup.” Indeed, the awareness campaign for the competition in Lagos will not be forgotten in a hurry by many Lagosians. It was a three-day road show that exhibited how the state governor has been rebranding Lagos positively since he assumed office in May 2007. Heavily built men were positioned at strategic areas in Lagos in the last three days of September. Startled by the appearance of these ‘strange beings’ tagged City Champions, many Lagos residents who had seen them couldn’t but call in during some radio programmes to relive their experiences after coming in contact with the giants. There was also a three-day promo in the media meant to sensitise Lagosians about the football competition. “We plotted the arrival of the City Champions as strange beings who typify the towering height and the vibrant spirit of Lagos. Our shoot showed them arriving the city by emerging from the belly of the Atlantic Ocean from the La Campagne Tropicana Beach in Lagos. These are like spiritual beings who represent the spirit of Lagos and who came just to stir the city in readiness for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup,” Opayemi explains. Lagos residents haven’t seen the end of such innovative campaigns, though, says Opayemi. “We have not drawn the curtain on the acts of the City Champions yet,” he assures. “The Champions are still very much in town and they will remain with us till the end of the tournament.” The state has also continued to run campaigns on television drawing the attention of the public to the on-going event. The Wisdom Keys boss explains that the commercial was shot in Lagos, noting that the good work being done by Fashola in the state needs to be showcased to the whole world. The state government also commissioned a theme song entitled Welcome to Lagos, The Home of Football and performed by Sammie Okposo, Segun Arinze, Ego and other artistes. “There is no doubt that the state government and the LOC in Lagos have done a very good job to market this competition,” Mike Adeola, a banker and passionate football enthusiast, affirms. “You could see that the Governor Fashola is a very good football lover. He has done a lot and every soccer-loving Lagosian must applaud the governor.” |
