We had Chief Akin Omoboriowo of Old Ondo State who upstaged his principal then Gov, chief Adekunle Ajasin and rigged him out but was removed by court. That is the ideal . But it is never like that in real life. Not everyone does the right thing all the time. Even you . Even in the US or EVEN China with death penalty people in government are still corrupt . There is always someone in Government that will be corrupt .
But this should not be about the government . The law is the law regardless of the people in government . That is why there are different levels of government to checkmate issues like this . You cannot absolve the crimes of the citizen who bribed the government official . If the punishment is to demolish the property , then it should be done . If the punishment for the official is death by firing squad, so be it .

to be clearer, are you saying because a corrupt government official gives go ahead despite the law , the citizen should be pardoned?

Government is the people . People are good and bad . There is no misleading here . It was either lack of due diligence or bribery and corruption . Either way , it is against the law.

Eg . If you get to a traffic light at red . You know you are not to move , but you give the traffic warden 50 Naira and drive through then you have an accident or road safety catches you , will you sue or blame the government ?

Government officials or enforcers accepting bribe doesn’t change the law. You only have rogue officials . And they are also breaking the law by accepting or soliciting bribes . Only the officials will be held accountable. Not the government . That is why a corrupt governor will go to jail and not the whole state government .

But it takes two to tango . If they bribe an official to carry out an illegality , they should be prosecuted as well as the building demolished . They should bring evidence of bribery against the officials so they can all go down . Bribe doesn’t change the law , it only postpones the inevitable .

Oga, even those prople that built those houses, knew it had kleg, but decided to go ahead. Did you not read in the post that red paint was placed on the fences telling them to stop work, but most will settle some so called government officials and then continue construction.
The fact you buy "stolen" land and then build on it does not confer ownership on you. Assuming your Toyota corolla is stolen and sold to a person, you then run into your car 2 years later, who then owns the car, you or the buyer of stolen property? Will the buyer now start blaming vehicle licensing office, roadsafety (number plate) etc for licensing and registering the vehicle?

I believe and could be wrong that the Nigerian factor came into play. You go to one office, pay some bribe and a go ahead is given even when it is not genuine.

Most of the people whose properties were demilished know that their building is illegal and not approved. The FHA told them, marked their houses but they ignored warnings and painted over the markings.

They felt they are above the law and NOBODY APPROVED THEIR CONSTRUCTIONS. The feeble attempt to turn this into a tribal fight is a waste of time
