Personally, I'm not bothered with what name my wife answers (as long as its mine or hers!!). In fact she started out with her own name, then graduated to a compound name, now its just my surname. Society has its ways of pressuring certain things. grin

That doesnt stop it from being European. There are some Africans who don't watch tv and yet are called "Paul".

Politics › Re: The Cia In Nigeria: Coups Past, Present, And Future. (Updated) by Beaf: 9:30pm On Jul 07, 2009
Yes, the toothpaste attempt failed but the fact that an attempt was made at all by the CIA proves the point of this article.

Lumumba was later overthrown by the CIA backed coup that brought in "Field Marshal" Mobutu Sese Seko. The Belgians carried out his execution in Congo, during Mobutu's regime.

There's always been fiddling to our detriment, thats not saying we don't cause some of the problems.

@rookie. Sorry about that.

@bawomolo
I believe you're wrong. Do this google search; http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=CIA+lumumba&meta=
See what you come up with?

This is from the New York Times; "Perhaps no single episode cited in the Church committee's report provides a more graphic illustration than the lurid and botched C.I.A. intrigue to kill Patrice Lumumba"
http://www.nytimes.com/1987/09/02/opinion/l-cia-war-against-lumumba-illustrated-errors-of-covert-policy-855987.html

The wikepedia article on Lumumba has several references (including the CIA attempt to kill Lumumba by injecting poison into his toothpaste);

This is a terrible topic - please stop providing further proof that African Americans can be hard working, thats obvious

This is just a misunderstanding of the most horrible kind. It would seem that the derogatory use of the word rose among slaves in the US (one of the Urban Dictionary definitions suggests this).
Regardless, we need to stop using Akata, God! After reading a bit about this I feel drained. I'm quite sure only fools would use derogatory words to describe their kith and kin; whilst I'm sure is not derogatory, we must be sensitive and stop this thing.

The first line you happily cite is from the article's poster opinion, not from any news site. The wording easily gives it away.
Is this truly the best defence you can come up with?
Oya, show me any reputable news report stating that the US senate is probing the CIA for 'the murder of foreign presidents and has made a call to the US president to outlaw this practice'.

You still demonstrate a shocking lack of intelligence in your answers. The topic clearly seeks to imply that the CIA has has a direct role in the Nigeria coups of the past. Talking about issues in other countries still does not make a case for blaming the CIA.
For example, Russian forces overthrew the Afghan government and killed the president prior to the invasion of Afghanistan. Does that mean that the KGB is responsible for all coups in the world also?

When you're in a hole, stop digging grin
I'm sure the article poster's opinion sets the tone of debate? Am I missing something or are you suggesting that we we just manufacture something external to the topic to reply to? huh
What is your definition of reputable?
There is every reason to relate the CIA’s actions in other countries to our beloved Nigeria; you learn either by your experiences or the experiences of others. . . I repeat; So Lumumba, Nkruma, Martin Luther King ain't enough?

Beaf:

Curiousity and a little reading around would help to lever you out of ignorance. Take this as a start; Abacha phoned Collin Powell before his coup.
http://allafrica.com/stories/200906031093.html

Ask the question why Abacha who was not even head of state had Collin Powells number and why he could call at 2 a.m. You only call your closest buddies at 2 a.m.
Yeah, take that as a starting point for the research that will begin to educate you.

I didn't realise that there was a slightly older thread on more or less the same issue.
Culture › Re: Nigerian Children Ashamed Of Their Names ? by Beaf: 6:39pm On Jul 07, 2009
The parents are to blame.
A persons name is the first line of their identity. If a child reacts negatively to their name, it's just a projection of how they've been made to feel inside; more than anything, it is a reflection of their parents insecurities.

You would generally find that kids who do this come from a background were they constantly hear things like "the shame that Africa has become". If we can be positive, our kids will have the inner strength to stand up for their identities. We can address our issues without condemning everything African.

i'd like to believe Mugabe means well for his country but the manner in which he deals with issues is somewhat worrying.
Maybe, just maybe his people never believed in his actions cos i cant understand how he'd go from a hero to a down right tyrant

I share Mugabe's afrocentric views and actions. I believe other African heads of state share his opinions as well. they are just scared to say it out loud.
No, the man can positively identify the devil even at midnight.
And how is he meant to deal with whites being 7% of the population, but holding 90% of arable land. Are Zimbabweans slaves?
The truth is that Zimbabwe is being used as an example to other African countries if they "fall out of line".
All Zimbabwe's asserts have been seized and they are currently bearing the brunt of the most inhuman sanctions. These are sanctions so wicked and deep that Zimbabwe can't trade even though it wants to (you need access to Dollars to trade).

Mugabe saw evil and called it 'an idiot'.

That was a gem Tpiah!

This is his earliest "British" ancestor; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_Cholmondeley_(soldier). He was indeed a Norman!

So they kept their original French name through about 500 years in England and are doing the same now in Kenya.

Coups didn't wreck Nigeria. Many millitary regimes worldwide have recorded better improveme ts than civillian rule. Nigerian greed and stupidity killed this country. Not from the leaders only, but from the generalpopulace.
I could ask you the same sort of stupid question you asked earlier, if these were Nigerian. But I'll leave that game to you; I'm sure you can run rings around yourself.

the topic concerns NIGERIA. Even a retarded 10 year old should know that Nkrumah, Lumumba and MLK aren't nigerians. Do you bother to preview your posts to see if they pass the common sense test?
I do a lot of reading. I'm just not stupid enough to swallow conspiracy theories with no concrete proof.
Being selective? How did you miss this?
THE U.S. CONGRESS INVESTIGATES THE MURDER OF FOREIGN LEADERS BY THE C.I.A. AND CALLS FOR A PRESIDENTIAL DECREE TO END THE PRACTICE.
And you acuse me of not reading the article? That the very first line.  Doh!! grin grin grin grin grin grin

So I can say this legitimately:
So Lumumba, Nkruma, Martin Luther King ain't enough?
Now continue dancing on your own toes and tripping yourself. . .

If you are African and have an English name will you change it to something from your culture?
If you can't change your own name, will you nevertheless give your child an English name?

This guy's family has been in Kenya for donkey years. His name is Thomas Cholmondeley. . . Not a Kenyan name.
I bet his kids don't have Kenyan names as well.

Yeah? Each time some of us try to do things, we can't even get off the groud because every 9ja is either so cynical or doesn't have the self esteem to believe that 9ja or other blacks can attain heights.

Long and short is, we bring the good ones down before they even take off. And God knows you need serious traction to take off in 9ja with new ideas.

Let's all look in the mirror for things to improve.

I currently live in the UK. So to those back home, I am Akata as well. Why would we want to offend you?
As for Akata meaning feral cat, there is a term for those back home as well; it is Ologbo (means cat too).
The "Akata" issue that seems to stem from immigrant Africans not liking the unserious attitude of the rougher AA's.

This thing seems so serious that there are counter definitions on the web. . . Jesu!
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=akata
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akata

I'm beginning to think we should consider dumping use of the word in the US.

RajalAadi:
Yeah, I hear all of you guys talking. And just see denial of the true meaning of the word. If it really meant nothing then you could just call black American's 'cousins' or something like that. It's not hard to come up with a word. And if you guys can't even narrow down a definition, then it must not be an important word in your language. I mean, I if chose a word for you guys like, Ferels. As in Ferel Cats. Meaning something that was captive or tame and now is living freely, then How would feel about that? I could twist it and turn it and say "look guys, we call you guys ferels because you escaped bondage of the white man and now are free, but ferel is not a negative word man, it just means African people now. We don't mean anything by it." How would feel about that?
Akata has always meant overseas. This is bordering on the ridiculous. Are you trying to force a new meaning for the word?
There really is nothing offensive about the word, Why would we use derogatory words on our blood?
We could call black American's 'cousins', but that is an English word. . . We aren't English, we only use the language out of neccesity.

This is not called politics for nothing. Unlike auto, health, or even job threads, this is the only thread where facts/fiction/reasons/opinions/biases/economy/finance/ethnicity/jobs/etc get mixed up, blended if you will, and served up hot --delicious for some, stinking for others, but in reality it's politics.

While I don't subscribe to personal insults and innuendos, there is no way to practice or participate in this political thread without some form of lively and heated debate. Sometimes, one may not always be on the winning or even reasonable side, but that politics. Censorship will not help.

With over 3.5 million members, N/L is not doing badly. Personally, I think that Igbo related issues get lots of traffic because Igbos make up the most number in Nigeria and on this Nairaland---- Seun probably knows it too.

Because nothing is done about such obnoxious and offensive types, we are forced to take "counter-action" and then everything sinks to a new low.

I really think we need to raise standards. I'd rather have something done than have to take "counter-action".
