Banditry: Two suspected informants arrested in Katsina

Two suspected informants of bandits terrorising Dutsinma local government area of Katsina State, Bilyaminu Ma’aruf and Sani Umaru, have been arrested by operatives of the police.

Spokesperson of the Katsina State Police Command, SP Gambo Isah while parading the suspects at the police headquarters on Friday said they were arrested following a tip-off.

SP Isah said the suspects upon investigation have confessed to have masterminded the kidnappings of so many residents of the area.

According to him, “On 12/11/2020 at about 14:00hrs, based on a tip off, the Command succeeded in arresting one Bilyaminu Ma’aruf, 35-year-old of Kadangaru Quarters, and Sani Umaru, 40-year-old of Gammo village, of Dutsinma LGA of Katsina state, notorious informers to bandits in the forest.

“In the course of the investigation, suspects confessed to have masterminded the kidnappings of so many residents of Dutsinma area including that of one Amina Usman, ‘F’, aged 20yrs of Dutsinma in which the sum of Nine Hundred Thousand Naira was paid to the kidnappers as a ransom and the sum of twenty thousand naira was given to them as their share of the crime.

“Furthermore, they also confessed to have provided information to bandits that led to the kidnapping of one Amina Shu’aibu, ‘F’, aged 22yrs of the same address, who later escaped from the hands of the bandits and several other similar kidnappings incidents in the area. Investigation is ongoing,” SP Isah stated.

In a related development, the Image-maker said the command after a gun duel also recovered 112 livestock from some bandits and rustlers.

“On 4/12/2020 at about 01:10hrs, Area Commander, Dutsinma, led a team of Policemen and blocked Tsaskiya cattle route, Safana LGA of Katsina state, based on the report that bandits in their numbers, armed with AK 47 rifles have attacked Tamo village, Kurfi LGA and rustled domestic animals.

“Fortunately, the hoodlums followed through the route and the police team engaged them into a serious gun duel. The team succeeded in dislodging the bandits and recovered one hundred and two (102) goats, eight ( sheep and two (2) cows stolen from the village by the bandits.

“Search parties are still combing the area with a view to arresting the bandits and/or recover their dead bodies. Investigation is ongoing,” SP Isah however said.

Armed Robbers Kill POS Operator In Edo After Collecting Her Money, Phones, Other Valuables (Photos)

Suspected armed robbers on Friday, shot dead a young Point of Sales operator in Benin City, Edo state, IgbereTV reports.

The incident happened at Godwin Abbey Way, off Sapele road in Benin city on Friday afternoon, December 4.

It was gathered that the armed men stormed the centre at exactly 12:50pm and went straight to the young girl said to be in her early twenties, who was operating the POS shop.

According to reports, the robbers collected her mobile phones, undisclosed amount of money and other personal items and still shot her dead though she did all they asked her to do.

The dare devil armed men later zoomed off towards the Sapele road end of Benin city.

Some sympathisers at the scene described the deceased as a young promising girl who was into POS business to make ends meet.

"On Monday, I investigated a case of extortion involving a lady whose vehicle was arrested wrongfully when the police squad attached to the LASTMA Enforcement Unit went to enforce the law on one-way driving without LASTMA personnel.

While making arrests, this innocent motorist was also picked up and her vehicle brought to the headquarters. The vehicle was not booked for any offence. They negotiated from N150,000 and ended up fining her N52,000 using a POS for payment.

She then called the LASTMA contact number and the incident was brought to my notice. I insisted on investigating the issue, identified the officer involved and the money was retrieved. We called the lady to return to LASTMA Headquarters to collect her money

She came with her mum and they were extremely grateful. We will be sending a report to the Police formation for them to start the process of reprimanding the officer involved.

We will not tolerate any negative attitude from our officers or those attached to any of our enforcement units. We continue to encourage road users to send reports of any errant officer via any of our complaint channels."

10 pregnant girl and some kids have been rescued by the Ogun state police command from a baby factory at Ofada, Mowe, Obafemi-Owode LGA, IgbereTV reports.

While the operator of the factory, Mrs Florence Ogbonna reportedly fled during the raid on Tuesday December 1, her daughter and a physically challenged man were arrested.

The physically challenged man is allegedly responsible for impregnating the young girls and after delivery, their babies were sold by Mrs Ogbonna who was arrested for similar offence and is standing trial for human trafficking.

Ogun police spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi said the young expectant mothers aged 18 to 24 years, were transported from Imo, Abia and Ebonyi states with a promise of securing employment for them but later lured into the illicit trade.

The raid was conducted at the baby factory owned by the woman who is under court bail, after one of the victims resisted the plan to put her baby for sale, escaped and reported the illicit trade to the police.

The lady identified as Chidera Onuoha, revealed that she reported to the police after the fleeing woman wanted to sell her baby. On how much the babies cost, she said;

“If the baby is a boy, they sell it for N250,000. If it’s a girl, it is N200,000.”

Joint Police, Army, DSS Team Arrest Suspected Kidnappers With Military Uniforms In Plateau State (Photos)

A joint operation conducted by the Special Military Task Force, Operation Safe Haven, Department of State Service, the Nigerian Police Force and Vigilante Group of Nigeria, have susccessfully smashed and arrested three members of a notorious kidnap syndicate in Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau state, IgbereTV reports.

Commander of the task force, Maj. Gen. Chukwuemeka Okonkwo, who confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday, December 1, said the kidnap syndicate is also responsible for the rising banditry in the area.

He gave the names of the arrested suspects as 37-year-old Abdullahi Abubakar, Rabiu Ahmadu, 35, and Akilu Zubairu, 32.

Items recovered from the suspects include one AK 47 Rifle, one Magazine, 3 Rounds 1.62mm Special, 1XBarreta Pistol & Magazine, Camouflage Uniform and 9 SIM cards.

He then went on to tell him that the reason he chose to support his people was to apologize in his own little way for what the govt did to them.

‘It’s rubbish’ — Gowon reacts to accusation of looting half of central bank

Yakubu Gowon, a former military head of state, has described allegations that he looted half of the Central Bank of Nigeria as “rubbish”.

Tom Tugendhat, a member of the United Kingdom parliament, had accused Gowon of looting Nigeria’s treasury when he left office.

Speaking at the UK parliament committee debate on a petition on the #EndSARS crisis, Tugendhat had urged the UK to call out corruption and use its powers to stop who profit from Nigeria’s wealth and hide it in foreign countries.

“Some people will remember when General Gowon left Nigeria with half of the Central Bank, so it is said, and moved to London,” he said.

However, Tugendhat did not provide any evidence to support his claim.

In reaction to the remark, Gowon told BBC: “I don’t know where he got that rubbish from, I served Nigeria diligently and my records are there for all to see”.

“What the MP said was just mere ridicule and I don’t know as to where he cooked up such statement. I served Nigeria as much as I could and my achievements during those years are available to everyone.

“I don’t want to talk over the matter since those who know me very well say that the MP’s statement is nothing but a mere fallacy”.

Gowon was Nigeria’s military head of state from 1966 to 1975, including during the time of the oil boom.

After leaving power in 1975, Gowon went to the UK to study political science and international relations as an undergraduate at Warwick University.

Several people including Akinwumi Adesina, president of the African Development Bank (AfDB), have reacted to the claim vouching for Gowon’s integrity.

The death of his sister came as a shock yesterday to everyone and he was set to leave Abuja for Mokwa this morning. He asked for his bags to be taken to the car as he was feeling a little dizzy and would want to relax a little only for them to return to a lifeless body.

I saw him on the 6th of September this year at his house in Minna and spoke with him last week over the phone not knowing that those would be my last moments with this man that has a lot for one to emulate most especially when it comes to giving back to our society.
