(Reuters) - Nigeria has resumed flights to Saudi Arabia for the annual haj pilgrimage, ending a diplomatic row over the detention of hundreds of female pilgrims for arriving unaccompanied by men, the country's haj commission said on Tuesday. Saudi authorities have deported more than 600 female Nigerian pilgrims and detained hundreds for trying to visit the Islamic holy city of Mecca without male relatives. Nigeria suspended flights to Saudi last week. "Since the resumption of flights ... on Sunday a total of 8 flights have been operated conveying 3,786 pilgrims to the holy land," the Hajj Commission of Nigeria said in a statement. "This success was recorded largely as a result of the directive given to state pilgrims' welfare boards, agencies, to ensure that only female pilgrims that have the appropriate Muharram (male companion) are boarded." Women in Saudi Arabia are regarded as minors and require the permission of their guardian - father, brother, or husband - to leave the country, receive some kinds of medical treatment or work. They are not allowed to drive and are often expected to be accompanied in public by a male chaperone. In Nigeria, where there are 80 million Muslims, many practice a less restrictive form of Islam in which women are more or less free to move around as they like. All Muslims who are able are required to perform the haj pilgrimage at least once, as one of the five pillars of Islam. Numbers taking part have risen sharply over the last 80 years from around 20,000 in 1932 to nearly three million in 2011. http://www.elombah.com/index.php/latest-news/12767-nigeria-resumes-pilgrimages-to-mecca-ending-row-over-women |

Siena: I'm not into telling porkies. My Best man didn't turn up, there was no time to get anyone else, so a female friend of my wife's stepped into the role. And that's all it is, a role. The difference between Siena's female best man and the one OP is trying to use is definitely clear. |
Henryneo: Is it ok to have a female as your "Best Man" for your wedding? And what would the title then become? Why don't you just go ahead and marry your female bestman and leave the other innocent lady alone. Come to think of it, if she says she wants to use one of her male friends as her chief brides maid/chief brides man, HOW WOULD YOU FEEL? WILL YOU APPROVE OF IT? |

PRESIDENT of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, has denied claims in some quarters that poverty was responsible for the emergence of Boko Haram, noting that on the contrary, it was the aggrieved persons who lost in their electoral bid that created the monster. CAN President, yesterday, at the opening of a six-day meeting of the Niger Delta Christian Leaders Forum in Calabar, Cross River State, said sponsors of the Islamist sect want to divide Nigeria along religious line. He maintained that Boko Haram was a fundamentalist Islamic religious group created and sponsored by selfish politicians, who want to create political space for themselves and in the vent of failure to achieve that, resort to dividing Nigeria along religious line. He said: “Boko Haram is fueled by extreme religious ideology and not poverty because they have not come out to tell us that they are killing people because they are poor or hungry.” Oritsejafor said the claim that Boko Haram was a creation of poverty was a blatant lie by those sponsoring the organisation or its apologists just to mislead Nigerians and the world. “The leader of Boko Harm is from a very wealthy family background and even that young man who wanted to blow up an American airline, his father was a retired Permanent Secretary and one of the richest men in Nigeria. The claim that the fundamentalist group was created by poverty is a false claim by its sponsors and apologists,” he said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/09/boko-haram-sponsored-by-election-losers-oritsejafor/ |
Calabar — President Goodluck Jonathan said Nigeria will remain committed to all rulings of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in resolving international disputes. Addressing the first-ever High-Level Plenary Session of the United Nations on the Rule of Law yesterday in New York, President Jonathan said Nigeria will continue to obey ICJ rulings while calling on nations not to pick and select rulings to observe.
What if the ruling doesn't favour the people of the country? U swallow it hook, line and sinker? Pls the president's advisers should advise him to try the appeal, even if we loose, we would be happy that we tried. And the people of Bakassi will feel better because an effort was made on their behalf |

Wife of Nigeria’s Kwara State Governor, Omolewa Ahmed on Monday said that she would take full responsibility for the education of some 30 indigent primary school pupils in the state. The First Lady disclosed this in Malete while flagging off the “Adopt a Child to School” programme promoted by her organisation, LEAH Charity Foundation. While the pupils would remain with their parents, the foundation would take responsibility for their primary school education. The First Lady also added that the gesture was aimed at complementing the free and compulsory primary education policy of the state government. “We are concerned about the future of our children because we believe that grooming them today will ensure a better society that we all crave for tomorrow”, she said. Omolewa Ahmed said that the beneficiaries of the scholarship were orphans and children of the less privileged in different public primary schools in the area. She assured that a similar gesture would be extended to other communities in the state and urged wealthy individuals in the society to support the needy in their communities to complement the efforts of the government. http://www.informationnigeria.org/2012/09/kwara-state-first-lady-gives-scholarship-to-thirty.html |
